Excellent reaction. In case you don't remember the story behind this song Emma, it was wrote by the keyboardist Toumas when they sacked the first female singer Tarja. The band, and Toumas personally, got a lot of backlash by the fans and it drove Toumas into a depression and this song and others from the album were wrote in response to the sacking and the backlash. So parts in it like Marko and Emmpu going up to Toumas to make sure that he is ok (as he always found this one hard to perform) and the fact that Toumas kills himself in the song (he said so he didn't in real life) are clues. The last part is based on what Toumas' mother said to him when he told her. I am sure others will expend on the meaning more but just wanted to jog your memory a little. :).

The boy soprano at the start was Guy Elliott from St Mary's Choir School, Reigate, UK. Something for everyone in this musically and lyrically. Nightwish has performed Phantom of the Opera many times! Live from 2004 with the first singer (and Marko as a beastly Phantom) was amazing - and then more recently with Floor and Henk Poort! (THE Dutch Phantom for many years!) Maybe this song means so much to me because I have the same birthday as Tuomas - keyboard player, composer, arranger, co-conductor - THE Metal Mozart! So glad he chose this way instead of leaving life in reality! (that's why the others in the band gathered around him at the end) WE NEED HIS MUSIC!

Hello Emma! Long time has passed since I've last seen you react to Nightwish. I do like your reactions. Hopefully everyone here is doing good, I mean Emma and comment section as well. I'm doing okay. Finally the depression about my Mother and Father passing away 1,5 yrs ago and my Grandma dying last January. Took lot of time but feeling better. Anyways, lot's of love and hugs from Finland.
You improved. I find it hard to believe that you almost forgot this song. But I believe you. I am not really a Nightwish fan and certainly not a metal fan. But this is their masterpiece. I would almost put it on the same level as a classical music piece performed by a top orchestra. And I am also not a classical music fan.
For the longest time Tuomas had the sound engineers delete the vocals from the mix he was hearing because he just couldn't handle it. It was still too raw.
If you listen to the studio version of this song, sung by Anette Olzon (their second singer) you will hear a huge difference. Anette sings it like it is a pop song. It's flat, and misses the emotion that Floor puts in it. This song consists of 5 parts. Floor gives all of those parts the different emotions that fit to those parts. That is the difference between Anette - which is an ok vocalist in my opinion - and Floor, a vocal Godess. I don't have any musical background so I don't say this from a professional background. I say this after simply listening to both versions of this masterpiece.
Oh come on. I love Floor but the studio version is one of the few songs that is actually perfect for Annette imo. She had a fairy tale / whimsical sound that I think suits the song perfectly. The Annette hate is so wild to me. Again I love Floor but people act like she’s the second coming of Christ.

The Poet and the Pendulum is the song about there 1st singer Tarja Turnunen getting fired in 2005 , HERE IS MY INTERPRETATION OF THIS - The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas (Keyboards) wrote this and considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying show but the band did it for the love of music and there fans . According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearsals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song at the 10:00 time stamp , as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band at the time of this show )were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era

All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying show but the band did it for the love of music and there fans . According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearsals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song at the 10:00 time stamp , as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band at the time of this show )were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era

Nightwish has some different singers by the times. Saying "Nightwish" many people means the only one - and very old composition: Phantom of the Opera with Tarja yellow dressed with the yellow microphone on the picture. Please find and review it
