I remember playing the map for "Wolverines" in Spec Ops fending off waves of enemies. I'd be camped out in the Taco restaurant with my M240 and AT4 on Veteran difficulty. Here's me wishing MW2 Remastered was a full game so I could get all stars in Spec Ops again.

thinking about Wolverines! as a mission. the way that IW set it up and really drove it home as the russian invasion of the US was to have you defend those most American institutions: the suburban hellscape and its gas stations and fast food joints. quintessential defense of American culture.

I think they might have just been after a name for the gas and some devs still had "BE ADVISED HUNTER 2-1, 15 PLUS FOOT MOBILES AT THE NOVA GAS STATION, OVER" ingrained in their mind, so "nova gas" was just a natural term. Keeping in mind that typically game development bleeds over such that the end of one games development is basically simultaneous with the start of the next (like WAW zombies map development bleeding over into mw2, such that they delayed kino so long they just released it as a black ops map), there might even have been people working on early black ops while finalizing MW2, making it the easiest link ever.
