How to DETHATCH A LAWN AND WHEN TO DO it.

- In the spring time you'll see an awful lot of videos about dethatching or power raking the lawn. This is something that can have major health benefits to a lawn that has a thatch problem. It can also cause damage of the lawn doesn’t need a mechanical intervention.
In many cases the machines that you see being used are not actually making a huge benefit on the actual thatch layer. They are very effective at removing dead debris from grass clippings or from winter time shed, but not necessarily in breaking down the thatch underneath. Frequent trips will make an impact over time.
Aeration and topdressing, managing fertilizer applications, mowing properly, reducing insecticides when not needed and watering correctly will reduce thatch in your lawn.

I have seen many videos on this subject over the last few years. Your explanation, demonstration, along with graphics and how to keep it under control is the best I have ever seen. I can tell much time was put into the making of this video. Well done sir.

Yeah man, all roads lead to rome. I know that using Dthatch as part of program makes the lawn healthier and prevents buildup. This year I will show the difference in the turf with a side by side comparison running a dethatcher on treated and untreated

I’m excited this year to be using N-Ext D-Thatch 0-0-2 my soil has a high organic load presumably from the 2 sycamore trees, and maple tree in my yard and with all the leafs, twigs, and bark that they drop it has built up over the years. I’m hopeful as I continue to feed the soil and microbes 🦠 that the lawn will continue to grow and thrive! Look forward to all the content and new products!

Holy moly! Excellent video John. So much information in such a short amount of time! The consumer dethatchers are just power rakes. Sure the blade attachment helps a bit, but if you really need to clear up that, you'll need on of the big boys to get deep enough.

It's almost time to make my GCF order and especially D-Thatch. I have a few lawn renos coming up and the old lawns will need to be digested into humus for the new lawns.

I love running my sunjoe but it’s a lot of work. May skip my dethatch and seed this fall and work harder on raising pH and pushing soil environment to improve overall health. Enjoyed the informative video. 👍

@@Lawncology don't get me wrong, seeing all the dead grass and debris piling up is soothing but I'm willing to bet most of what people pull up isn't thatch at all.

Just scalped and didnt really have enough thatch (only 2 year old lawn), so on my last final scalp pass i didnt catch the clippings. (1/8") I also use the N-ext products to help with aeration and thatch control. Great video!

Very informative video.
I see some white things on the yard which I suspect is thatch. I have not de-thatched my yard for over 20 years. Can I use a "tow behind" tractor de-thatcher that has several springs on it? Should the thatch be picked up by a bagger or can it be mulched by a tractor? Thanks.
Thanks for the information. My lawn thatch is super thick. Lawn was flush with driveway and curb about 20 years ago. Now it’s a four inch drop the concrete. Feels like walking on a marshmallow bed. South Texas St. Augustine. Bought a dethatcher but won’t run six ft. Too many surface runners. Is there hope. Can I spray something like molasses to aid in microbes activity or should I till it up and start fresh? Guess I waited too long.
I like the hipster professor cartoon version of yourself. And what if your someone that finds dethatching fun? I pulled up a bunch of dead debris last fall and remulched it back into the soil. I feel like I might need to do this a few times.

I have the sun Joe and plan to remove some thatch, but first going to liquid aerate because the ground is so compact, would that be the correct order ?
Every time I pull up a weed it includes a big clump of yellow dead grass. The whole lawn has a yellow undertone and crabgrass and weeds are proliferating. Would dethatching help?
You never said when to do it. It's the middle of June and I'm wondering if I have to wait till the end of the year
My fertility company just put down an application of fast/slow release fert and a pre emergent crabgrass/weed control. I wanted to give the lawn a cleanup with a power rake set shallow to lift up pine needles and other winter lawn debris, and to "fluff" the matted down turf from the snow. Did I miss my opportunity to lightly power rake? Can I still power rake at a shallow depth?

Yes! But it depends on the amount of that determines what type you use. Heavy that you use a power rake, medium that a verticutter is great and light thatch a scarifier is the way to go.
Also consider the depth you set the machine at as well. I use my scarifier once a month all spring summer and fall and my lawn is happy.

I have Centipede, When is the best time for running a power rake? Also, there are areas where I have what looks like matting issues that keeps the lawn from filling in. I was going to power rake and put down blackcow. Any input is welcome

How effective is using molasses to stimulate microbe activity in reducing thatch?
There are a number of publications showing reduced thatch with molasses. A colleague of mine did his phD study on this topic. There is a product called I-Mol that had some great measurable thatch studies done as well as mentions in the golf course trades magazines. Dthatch was formulated around these types of parameters, cultures, sugar, nitrogen and other substances known to be beneficial to organisms.
