  • After waiting more than three years in a jail cell, Jimmy Lai stood trial for treason in a Hong Kong courtroom this week. If found guilty, the 76-year-old could spend the rest of his life in prison. But who is this media tycoon and pro-democracy activist? And why does the Chinese government want him behind bars?

Rebuke certainly came quickly for him, too! It's not even five years since he forced the pro-democracy protesters to stupidly wave the US flag (hurting their cause in the process) and boasted about supporting Trump on camera. Now look what happened to his city. As if the violence, vandalism, and right wing grift weren't already discrediting enough, here are some more nails in their coffin. And it all completely backfired.

CBC apparently needs another anti-China issue, thus here it is standing up for a Chinese citizen, with no connections to Canada who refuses to abide by Chinese law, much like Palestinians refuse to accept Israeli rules.
One minor difference is that I'm allowed to comment on this Hong Kong issue, very much unlike how CBC will never allow it's audience to discuss or debate Israel's efforts to erase the entire Palestinian nation.

Gosh, that was more than 25 years ago. The society changes and people change over time. Space for democracy progressed over time back in the colonial time, the UK gov had been increasing numbers of legislators to be elected, they set up a different culture, gives people freedom of speech, press freedom and freedom of association, and anti-corruption education became deeply rooted in HK, unlike China. Corruption culture in China is still very common, media is under all sorts of control. The basic law promised Hong Kong people to be able to elect their governors, but Beijing didn't keep their promises and is taking those freedom away. Your statement is therefore saying, as French people were ruled by Kings and Queen since the 5th century, while on earth they did a French revolution in 1789. Weren't they happy enough living under monarchism previously in all those years?

No mention of how: 1) Jimmy Lai's #2 at Apple Daily is a former U.S. Navy intelligence official? 2) That the Hong Kong Basic Law always required the Hong Kong government to enact its own National Security Legislation, and China waited 23 years for Hong Kong to fulfill its own constitutional obligations before enacting it at a time when the U.S. government was funding, organizing, and leading rioters in the city? 3) That Hong Kong was the only territory in the world without National Security legislation before it was imposed by China? 4) How the Hong Kong National Security Law is actually mild compared with, for example, U.S. National Security legislation, which, among other things, allows the U.S. government to assassinate its own citizens?

Let’s face it, if Hk was still part of the Uk or a protectorate of the US, none of this riot would have happened. Not that their rules were good, on the contrary, the rioters p/traitors would have been crushed and I can assure you that the West would never have allowed such anarchy and lawlessness to continue for more than a few days before they called in the National Guards or the military.
