If you want the ideal wheelset talk to a custom wheel builder. A custom set using off the shelf hubs, rims, and spokes can often be had for very reasonable money and will last you a lifetime

The whole "Rotating weight having more effect" thing is a myth in most situations. It might _feel_ faster and more responsive because the bike will surge forward more when you stand up on the pedals, but there's little to no actual difference, because it also slows down more quickly. (It just moves around under you more, but your actual speed won't be much different) Climbing a hill, yes it takes more energy to accelerate the wheel, but the wheel also stores more energy, so it takes longer to loose that speed. over the whole ride, the disadvantage of spinning up the heavy wheel is almost entirely cancelled out by the flywheel effect, and in the end there's not really any more effect than carrying the same weight non-rotating elsewhere on the bike. The only actual wasted energy due the the rotational inertia is the extra little bit of force needed when you're braking (with brakes or feet), but that's
my rear rim was delivered today via (slow af) FedEx for my fixed gear build...Weinmann Wheelmaster double wall DP18 700c with 36 spokes and an Origin8 high flange sealed-bearing flip-flop hub... kinda wish the spokes were double-butted but hey, it is what it is. Built up proper though!!

Did he really say wabi hubs are as good quality as Phil wood hubs? The rear hub alone of a phil almost cost as much as the wabi rimset. There are axles that are hollow and have the treading on the outside so "bolt on hub". Also "bolt on to hollow axle" (or better know as female axle hubs) is when the threading for the bolt is on the inside of the axle. Also just because the hub is a "bolt on to hollow axle, does not mean it's a good quality. There are various companies that make those for cheap prices.
@@Aubreykun phil wood is a component manufacture that is specialized in hubs. Phil make everything in house with precision quality that's why the price is high. To compare it to something equivalent would be Paul components, MACK hubs, white industry, etc. Small companies that make components basically. Those are just some examples I can speak on.
@@downfix White Industries, Cane Creek, and a few other higher-ticket brainds as far as I know actually are worth the money. I can't cite it but I remember Phil Wood components not being anything special beyond the name. They may possibly have been superior decades ago but nobody seems to race with Phil stuff anymore, it's just vanity at this point (ironic vanity = remove all the logos from the frame and not the parts...)

And I get what you mean by vanity, they became popular in the fixed gear scene. But there there has to be something more then just vanity keeping there company going for this long don't you think? Vanity dies out sooner or later but the company remains strong so there has to be something there. Have you ever ridden a pair of phil wood hubs? I've ridden many brands of hubs and it is one that I always return to.

The axle nuts on a rear wheel sometimes wear out at the serrations causing the lock nuts to loosen when installing the wheel. The axle turns in the dropouts instead of tightening. This happened to me with Formula hubs. While the wheel is off, check the locknut tightness and get the problem corrected before using. Too tight and the cartridge bearings will soon be toast.

Ive been looking at rims recently as was wondering where would i find out about different rim and wheel manufacturers. I look it up online and usually get the big ones like mavic, miche, and dt swiss but i never get any unheard of brands. For example i would have never even knew h plus son existed unless i heard zach talk about them.
is $250 a legit price for a hardly used 2016 fuji track bike? Looking to get started and have a side bike from my main road bike.? Also should I look for anything when inspecting a used single gear bike?
If your looking for light steel go for it there aren't many steel track frames that light, but you can get lighter stiffer aluminum track frames for less if you looking for speed
just a question on fitting track wheels on a road bike: I have a road frame that has 130mm rear spacing that I would like to get track/fixed wheels on. Can I just get any wheelset that has 120mm OLD rear spacing with a threaded axle and just add spacers? Do I need to look at the length of the axle to double check that this is possible or will that usually be fine?
Yes you can just add spacers to get a proper fit and it will just work. That said it won't hurt to check the axle length before buying, the info should be available or ask the shop you'll buy from.

Modern bikes comes with wide rims, technology, bro. I use 22.5mm rim (internal) with 23mm no issue at all. Rides smoother, less snake bite risk (even at much lower pressures like 50psi).
A bit more risk of sidewall damage, but yeah, it's definitely doable. I generally wouldn't go _quite_ that close, and I would never run a 23mm tire at 50psi, but I agree that the old ETRTO recommendations, or various rules of thumb, are definitely overly conservative. I've run fat baloon tires >2.5x the rim width, and ones barely wider than the rim, and never had a problem with either end of the spectrum.

My hubs have hollow axles with on-axle nuts, that should be third type of axles, cross of both Zach mentions.

Put a little smear of grease on the axle thread before putting the nut on. Will stop this from happening 👍

Its simple, you don't stop pedaling. As long as the rear wheel is spinning the pedals are spinning too.
