I wonder if just regular 8ml plastic would also off gas the same smell? I put some down in a crawl space and a year later the cat pee smell is noticeable randomly but not continuously.
Michael- I have a fully encapsulated crawlspace that smells intensely like cat urine. An exterminator told me there was no evidence of vermin in there. The encapsulation was done by the former homeowner so I don’t have records on what was used. It absolutely wreaks! I was offered by another company to have a radon mitigation fan system installed to draw out gasses. But, here you are saying that’s ineffective and it’s likely due to the actual plastic material used. IDK what to do now. Remove what’s in there and put new stuff in? Keep what’s there and put in a fan? Are you by chance in the Atlanta area? Thank you!
We would recommend removing the plastic. We have an Alpharetta, Columbus, Augusta and Athens location: crawlspaceninja.com/service-area/ We tried everything over the years and remove/replace is most effective.
Does this odor ever go away? We had our entire crawl space 'fixed' and are unable to get to this area now. Its been 3 months and it was fine but since the humidity has risen the odor has become extremely pungent. We do not have the option of having it replaced now....
It would be best to have the company come out and diagnosis what the odor is coming from. Is it mold they only sprayed and didn't remove? Is it standing water under the vapor barrier? Looked at an old renovated house, the crawl space has a very strong odor of cat urine, there is no vapor barrier to speak of. It seems to me that the prior owner had lots of cats that urinated freely in the house and through the subfloor. The renovator put down LVP and there were plug-ins putting out a nice scent for the inside house viewing. So, soil or cat urine?
In a predicament and can't find any solid answers. So my wife and I randomly started to smell a strong cat pee smell. We originally joked that a cat was in the crawlspace. A few days pass and a cat WAS trapped in the crawlspace and presumably peed down there. I crawled down there and sprayed every square inch with enzyme killer and then generalized cleaner with a pump sprayer and the smell went away for a few days. Now it's back strong but only in certain areas of the house seemingly random! What do you think we should do next?
You may need to try to locate the areas and soak the ground with the cleaners and move the dirt around some to make sure you've covered all of the affected areas. I am not sure, you may want to have a local contractor take a look.

What thickness plastic do you use Michael?
