      I teach Hindi to foreigners for a living, and through my job I realised that Hindi is extremely complicated! Consider this example:
      Merā beṭa roz ek kitāb paṛhtā hai = My son reads a book everyday
      vs.
      Mere beṭe ne kal ek kitāb paṛhī = My son read a book yesterday
      In the first sentence: The subject is "merā beṭā" (singular masculine) and the verb is singular masculine.
      In the second sentence:
      1. Why is it "mere beṭe"? Doesn't that mean "my sons"? Yes, but here because of the presence of the particle/postposition "ne", the "merā beṭa" becomes oblique (-ā changes to e). To say "my sons" followed by a "ne", we would say "mere beṭoṇ ne" (the plural oblique).
      2. Why is it "paṛhī"? Doesn't the verb take the gender of the subject? And the subject here is masculine (my son)? In Hindi, there is a rule that if a word is followed by a postposition, the qualities (gender and number) of the word becomes irrelevant to the verb. The verb then takes the gender of any word in the sentence that does not have a postposition. In this sentence, since the word "kitāb" is feminine and there's no postposition, the verb is feminine too. This is visible if we add the postposition "ko" in front of "kitāb":
      Mere beṭe ne kal ek kitāb ko PAṚHĀ = My son read a book yesterday
      The verb is now singular masculine because the verb can't take the gender of anything in the sentence. So it becomes masculine singular (the default gender/number in Hindi).
      Now imagine learning all of this as a Hindi learner.

    The point is, larger proportion of Hindi speaking population in India do not actually talk completely in pure Hindi. It is a weird mixture of Hindi+English which we call 'Hinglish'. There are a lot of terms which we use in our daily lives, which we don't even know the real Hindi words (either they are too complex or there are none for example- noone knows what smartphone/computer and many other things are called in Hindi).
    This is why the guy in the video himself had to think for some of the Hindi sentences.
    {Just a small fact- India has the largest English speaking population (second language) in the world & that's why people use English words in between their sentences}.
    Btw brilliant effort Bernardo❤️😁. As it is very difficult to learn an entire new Language Script🙌

    • @shivampatnaik2000
      @shivampatnaik2000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      There are things called 'loanwords' you know? Computer and smartphone might have their origins in English but today, they are as much Hindi (or any other Indian language) as they are English. And it isn't as if loanwords are a new thing. Hindi is full of Perso-Arabic loanwords (ex- bazaar, intezaar, mulaaqaat, manzil, kam, zor, hazaar, gareeb, amir, insaan, shuru, hamesha, etc.) that have been used for centuries. They're Hindi too, don't you think? There is no such thing called 'pure Hindi' (or pure any language). All our languages are full of loanwords. Even the Sanskrit words that are used in formal Hindi (for example, avashya, pashchaat, vishay, aagrah, namaste, prayatna, etc.) are loanwords too. So chill and keep using loanwords. They enrich our languages. ;)

    • @umangd
      @umangd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      loanwords and phrases are hard to keep track of when learning a new language. Take for example, how Bernardo said Shubhkaamnayein at the end. Not a lot of Indian people would use that word in spoken Hindi anymore. Same for Dhanyawaad. It's kinda sad evolution for our language, losing its roots and becoming more westernised if you think about it.

      About 10-20% of Indians know English, I believe (the last data was from 2001 when some 10% of Indians supposedly knew English). The percentage of people who are fluent is much lower (2% in 2001). But English is ubiquitous in India and most people (even the ones who don't know English) understand and use at least a few English words and phrases (which may not be enough to hold a meaningful conversation though).

    • @akarshshrivastava6764
      @akarshshrivastava6764 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@shivampatnaik2000 Ya I agree with you. You explained what I was trying to say in a much better way. And yes with 'pure hindi', I meant no use of any English words (ofc a language is made by adopting several words from other languages) & even though we may have Hindi terms for things, the masses still understand the English words. For example - Police, Traffic, etc (we write their hindi letters according to their pronunciations but don't necessarily have a dedicated Hindi word for them or most people including myself, don't know them). Correct me if I am wrong :)

    Hindi doesn't use Alphabets, Hindi uses
    Devnagari script which is an Alphasyllabary more commonly known as Abugida. All the languages of India as well as those of Burma, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc use Abugida.
    Abugida is different from Alphabet in the sense that unlike Alphabets the letters in the word are not placed according to the history of those letters, but according to their sound. Similar sounding letters are placed together and vowels and consonants are placed separately. Also in Abugida you can smash two letters to make a new letter.

    Interesting thing about Hindi is it's exactly pronounced as it's written and vice-versa. It means there's only a unique way to write something or say something. Very few exceptions.
    A very high grapheme to phoneme correspondence.

    • @theguy5898
      @theguy5898 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      There are just three exceptions!
      1. The -ãv (-आँव) ending is actually pronounced like -āõ (-आओं). For example: नाँव (nãv) = nāõ (boat), गाँव (gãv) = gāõ (village), पाँव (pãv) = pāõ (a type of bun)
      2. An unmodified "h" (ह without any vowel mātrā) in the middle of a word converts all "a" (अ) sounds around it into an "ai" (ऐ) sound. For example: शहर (shahar) = shaihair (city), कहना (kahnā) = kaihnā (to say), बहन (bahan) = baihain (sister). If the "h" (ह) is modified, then this doesn't happen. "kahūṇgā" (कहूँगा) is pronounced exactly how it's spelt.
      3. "Bahut" (बहुत) is actually pronounced "bauhaut"
