This is genuinely the most enjoyable podcast i’ve ever watched - they both match my humour so perfectly but also have such interesting and engaging conversations to go along with it, honestly perfect.

Things with accents get tricky when it's accents from English as a second language. The line between parody and mockery is not well defined, too easy to cross.
language change is something i look at a loooot for my a-levels and its actually super fascinating! there's loads of studies/theories/concepts that argue for both an increase and a decrease in language variation in england, so loved hearing your thoughts and would love to see more chat about language, it's such a complex and interesting topic!!

Bach and Arthur, I’m intrigued your guys opinions on nociception and the idea that pain is not a real as we have no recpetors for it and ‘it’s all in your head’ due to noxious stimuli being relayed to the brain? As a student physio we get taught this theory but I just have a hard time believing it considering I’ve injured myself badly and experienced quite severe pain myself.

Topic suggestion: synaesthesia, or more specifically time-space synaesthesia. I find it interesting that we can think very differently from each other in terms of what, for example, months, years and numbers "look like" in our minds and how it can help our memory.
My take on acts of selflessness is that once you begin to question or you become aware of what you may gain from the event, that is when it no longer exists.
The thing is, a lot of places outside of london don't really pay attention to the living wage. I'm 20 and the living wage for me is around £8/9, but I've been paying rent since I was 17 and for council house people with good and fair parents it's normally even younger. It seems unfair but my single mum working minimum wage herself physically cannot support it, so I'm happy to pay my dues. My job luckily pays around 11.50, but that's rare in rural and coastal areas. I live in an extremely tourist heavy place so you'd expect more, but you don't get more.

you’re correct, if they spelt it “samseong” people would pronounce the eo in samseong like ee ong and not ung and that’s probably why they chose to spell it samsung instead of samseong
Hearing you guys read that egg story was actually really fascinating. I guess it can be interpreted many ways and even tho i dont believe in reincarnation i took from that story the idea that mankind is all one entity and the fact that we are all beings is something that unities us and that we should treat each other with kindness on the basis that we are all living the same type of existence. I dont know, it was very beautiful listening to yous read that.
I'd love to hear you both speak more on the topic of euthanasia, with regards to not just terminally ill people but people that are mentally ill having it as an accessible option to end their suffering. There was a case this year a woman by the name of Zoraya ter Beek who died by assisted suicide due to suffering from poor mental health which stirred up a lot of controversy and it would be interesting to hear your thoughts. It's something I am very passionate about and strongly believe should be openly discussed more!
Samsung isn’t actually quite samsong it’s more like samseong, as it is spelt with the ㅓ vowel which has a kind of eo sound whereas the ㅗ vowel has an o sound.
You should look at how Hyundai is pronounced in Korean. Instead of hi-un-die like I hear many people here say it is more hyun-day (where the y acts as a consonant and not a vowel)

in terms of the euthanasia discussion i think for me the issue is if you wouldn't allow a fully able-bodied person to go through with a decision to end their life but would allow it for someone who is disabled or terminally ill, the inherent message there is that the disabled/terminally ill person's life is not worth as much as the other persons, so for that reason I don't think I could ever fully support legalisation of euthanasia as it forces humanity to decide who is worth supporting to live happily or who we should allow to die
In the US if your party of over a certain amount of people some places put a mandatory percentage on the bill and you can add to it if willing.

The debate about altruism is actually really interesting because there have been psychological studies that show how altruism is different in individualistic cultures (US/UK/The West) compared to collectivist cultures (the East).
With individualistic cultures since the need of the self is placed above the needs of the collective, it’s believed that in individualistic cultures altruism is mainly based on the self and how helping others can increase one’s happiness. Whereas in collectivist cultures the needs of the collective are prioritised so their altruism has been found to be based on the recipient and how your actions can solely benefit the recipient.
There’s one study in particular (Weiss-Sidi & Riemer., 2023) that tested happiness after different types of altruistic actions/tasks, and they found that with individualistic cultures there was a positive effect of altruistic behaviour on happiness, supporting the whole ‘impure’ altruism/no actions could ever be selfless notion (because they do to feel better about themselves).
But for collectivist cultures altruistic behaviour did not have a positive effect on happiness, leading to a ‘purer’ version of altruism, which could be evidence that pure altruism does exists and is showcased by certain populations. But then again you could argue that strengthening ties with the community for their own benefit is the reason for their actions, and therefore not selfless.
That doesn’t mean their actions are selfish or self-serving though because usually actions are done with the other person’s benefit in mind, but I guess there’d always be the unconscious rationale of how it can be beneficial to the self.
I think true altruism does exist purely because the intentions for the actions are to help someone else. The way it can benefit you is secondary/unconscious if that makes sense, like a by-product. Like a mother giving up her child for adoption, knowing they won’t be able to take care of them properly, would be an example of pure altruism in my opinion. They know they can’t provide for the child, so they give the child away, and they’ll always be wondering if it was the right choice or not because the child isn’t guaranteed a good family.
Anyways this is long enough, and I’ve waffled so much but I just thought it was interesting. I am by no means an expert though, just a psychology student that's heavily interested in social psychology :)) Love the podcast

Some states or cities in the US thought about getting rid of tips but waiting staff fought against it. Even though without tips their salary is terrible the tips are so good they can actually make decent money serving tables, they found if they removed tips and switched just to a higher base salary their income would decrease so they threw out the proposed changes. It feels like a good idea to get rid of tipping but at least sometimes its much better for the staff waiting the tables
