The original version didn't show Santa delivering the Misfit Toys, the first time it aired. There were so many complaints from people asking what happened to them, that the closing credits were completely redone for the 1965 airing. Billie Mae Richards' name was misspelled in them.

I believe the original broadcast ended immediately after the Peppermint mine scene. On current home media releases the two endings are spliced together. It's so extremely well done, that you can't even tell that they were originally two separate conclusions. I want the original full color credits on gift boxes restored, and THEN we will have the "true" version of the special.

Three of the original "Rudolph" voices lived at the Performing Arts Lodge in my neighbourhood: Billie Mae Richards, Paul Soles, and Alfie Scopp.
Billie died several years ago. We lost Paul and Alfie in the past year. They were the last two surviving cast members.
None of the cast got a penny in residuals since 1969, because standard contracts in the 1960s only lasted for 5 years. Nobody imagined "Ruudolph" would still be commercially viable (and extremely lucrative) for 57 years...and counting.

What I love about the original stop-motion animation specials & movies... they are flawed, they can be corny, they can be jerky, you can see the artificial "otherness" of the scene and movement. What I love about "perfect", smoothed out and too many frames per second new stop-motion animation... that people are so awe-struck by the old animation that they are still tinkering with it half a lifetime later. Other than that, I applaud that they are paying tribute to a classic from true geniuses of our time, but I'll stick with the originals. Thanks!

I was born five years after Rudolph first aired, and have watched it every year of my life since. It's the reason I got a super 8mm camera, projector, and editing machine when I was 11 years old. It's also the main reason I got into the animation industry. It's a classic that can never be touched. It is perfection. It is magical, and its charm is a direct result of its flaws. While I can appreciate the technology that went into this project, I think it would have been better suited putting those efforts into something fresh and new. You simply don't mess with classics. It looks nice, but it will never look or sound like Rudolph. It's just a slick imposter that no one asked for. Kids today deserve the same Rudolph we grew up on. The same one that inspired these great artists in the first place. That is the magic of Rudolph.

I grew up with these being on in holiday rotation in the 80s. I've always thought they were fun, even as a kid I didn't feel these were "sacrosanct" specials.. to me they were just "what was on" during the holidays... and personally I preferred the Peanuts xmas special over these. I get the nostalgia we have over them.. the designs.. the quirky wonkiness of the animation... etc.. but times have changed. The imperfections that we grew up with and find endearing probably won't play to the kids you want to impress today, and modern airings probably wouldn't respect the 4X3 aspect ratio of old tv shows.. so youd get a badly cropped widescreen hack job if it. Look at it this way... the old versions will still be there... but if noting else.. this is keeping the tradition and spirit of it going, just in widescreen 4K.

They're not SUPPOSED to be high-tech - it's part of their charm, and part of the sense they come from a past when technology wasn't so overwhelmingly important. It strips them of the sense of tradition because they look just like everything else kids see at the movies. This reminds me of that awful trend of colorizing classic black-and-white movies, believing that it automatically made them "better".

It’s not just that but what bothers me are the puppets themselves… they feel more like a parody than the original puppets… ESPECIALLY You’d think they could of LITERALLY studied the actual film and got the puppet characters down perfect… But no… they feel more like bootlegged versions of the original puppets…
You’ve seen some Rudolph stop motion commercials like LITERALLY the Aflac commercial (ESPECIALLY), and that SNL parody of Rudolph from 2001 captured the original character puppets better than this, but I think the Aflac one so far was the closest we ever got to the original puppet characters than this, which is sad how a 15 year old commercial captures these characters than a 15 year later project like this where the characters feel like bootleg versions of themselves… but honestly if they really wanted to they could capture the original characters dead on to the originals… They just never tried yet…

@@princesspeachfan100 There is a reason for this. Most of the original puppets were destroyed in a fire. Rudolph was lost, but later found in an attic years later. I believe that he and one other puppet are the last remaining props from the original film. He’s actually in a museum somewhere, now.
I think that the original film artifacting adds a lot to the original as well. There’s just texture there that just can’t be replicated anymore.

The last time I saw Rudolph, I wondered if they kept the audio and re-animated the visuals, how cool would that be? But now that I saw a glimpse of it, I have mixed feelings. Being an animation buff, I sense the reasons for the remake were about a challenging technical exercise, and for a very personal labor-of-love project with an homage to their heroes at Rankin Bass. It was not about replacing a classic. But which version of Rudolph do you want your five-year-old daughter to see for the first time --- the classic, or the new one --- and do you show her the other one next year? In defense of the original, I noticed tiny flaws that I always enjoyed, like how dirty Santa's fingers were (because of the animators' dirty fingers handling the characters), how Hermie's mouth is gone while standing under the Bumble, and how the reindeer shadows disappeared off the cave wall they moment the characters exited out of the camera's view. I'm just glad you kept the sky green!

The original is definitely the definitive classic (haha), but this 4-D one was pretty neat to see at my local aquarium, seeing it in 3D plus all of the gusts of cold wind, splashes of water and falling snow, etc. And it was great to see it so clear, but I will always re-watch the original at holiday time.

I haven't watched this 4D version yet but I'm going to here in a few. I just wanted to say, and this is just my opinion, that the little mistakes or maybe I should say odd things you see in the original version like the fur on the puppets moving around between frames and little things like that are what make stop motion animation that much more interesting. I didn't really understand what stop motion animation was back in the early 70s when I first started watching Rudolph but I could tell that I saw strange fur and clothing manipulation movements from frame to frame which made me think, hmmmmmmmm, I wonder what that is 🤔? To me it makes it more interesting. When it's done too perfectly without any of those imperfect details I think it makes it much more sterile and boring in a way. It's kinda like noticing little things in say for instance the original Star Trek series. You'd see imperfections in several costumes or maybe the way makeup and the like were applied and how they used what looked exactly like Redhots candy in a medicine bottle or jar and that's probably what they were, Redhot candy. Another interesting thing I noticed, among others, was when Captain Kirk would get his cup of coffee and sit in his Captain's chair, the cup looked just like a regular Styrofoam Dixie cup spray painted silver.
These are the little details that I think makes certain shows and/or movies 🎥 more interesting and we all know it's make believe but we want to believe it's real even for just a little while and the small flaws among other things that we recognize from home gives it a down to earth feeling at the same time.

That's a good point about digital recording, and isn't that incredible to realize? It was all originally shot on film. The cinematographers and animators had no idea what they had captured until after it was developed. It was snap a shot and hope for the best.

I would love to know where I can buy the full DVD of this to add to my collection because I think it would be a wonderful addition.

I watched a different video where they discussed the nose. The original was incandescent (it was the 60s after all) and made so much heat it slowly damaged the puppet over time. So they had to install an LED.

Something they might not have thought of - the old version has characters facing the audience a bit when they're speaking to each other, and the new version has them facing them straight on. At least in that one scene on here when Santa is speaking to Rudolf.

I watched Rudolph today and felt my 4K TV couldn't bring out the colors well because of the vintage look. Even after tinkering with the contrast of the TV itself it felt washed out and didn't look right on a modern TV. So I think this might bring it back to life for those with the modern TV screens that don't bring out the full beauty of the film.
