- Looking back through all the years of Genshin Impact so far, I found it really fascinating how long Hu Tao has stayed relevant for and all the different ways she kept herself in the meta's top tiers. Today we'll be going through the history of Hu Tao, and how she still manages to survive even amidst Genshin's increasing power ceiling.

Speaking of HP... I wonder how certain weapons/characters would perform if they were HP based.
Like, Vortex Vanquisher having HP% substat, or Charlotte scaling on HP 🤔
Also, weapons that have ATK% substat and then have a passive ability that gives even more ATK%...instead of DMG%

She is pyro, so presumably a really good pyro support? The problem is we are verging on stronger pyro characters and it’s not out of the realm of possibility for the pyro archon to be the first true main DPS archon on the level of someone like Neuvillette in terms of gameplay strength and if that happens, whatever is good for Hu Tao will be better for them. She’ll always be strong, but she may finally be overshadowed. Which is fine, Yoimiya has been overshadowed since the moment she released and people still love and play her today. Hu Tao will be the same

Btw I notice this wasn't mention in the video. But during Ver 3.0, the Hydro Resonance got rework from giving party members Healing Bonus to instead + 20% Max HP. Allow Hu Tao to focus more of EM

i was obsessed w her from the beta leaks back in december 2020, and she was the first limited 5 star i ever pulled on her first banner in 1.3. i still use her to this day, her scaling is just too good and she benefits so much from current supports with her hp mechanics

Same here man, at the start of genshin I stopped playing for 3 months and seeing Hu Tao made me come back. And then I finally got her on her 1st rerun. After that I still continue to play her daily to this day and for the foreseeable future

Hu Tao can use an artifact set from the same domain as the archon’s set. Maiden’s from 1.0, Shime from 2.0, Guilded from 3.0, Marechusse from 4.0, and probably Murata’s set in 5.0. (Probably can do wicked Melts from the Tsarista’s set.)
No matter what new characters Genshin Impact introduces, Hu Tao will always be my favorite!
I remember seeing rumors about her being a four-star character and some fan art of Hu Tao back in late December 2020. It's unfathomable how fast time flies.
another important change that contributed to Hu Tao maintaining her status that wasn’t straightforwardly mentioned was the change to hydro resonance in 3.0 that increased your characters’ HP! that’s what really solidified the double hydro core as Hu Tao’s strongest team option bc not only was she able to vape more consistently and benefit from Yelan’s ramping dmg buffs but she also could utilize the HP buff to further boost her damage!
I may sound like a simp but hu tao was actually the reason i started playing this game when i saw an ad of her i was like hey she looks like that one girl for konosuba and ever since then i started playing 😂

As a launch player, I can add in some extra perspective as a Hu Tao lover who has pulled every possible upgrade to her (except Xianyun but she’s on the way).
There were several other micro-buffs to her teams along the way. She was always one of the strongest, but her growth through indirect buffs is astounding.
In 1.3 when she released, her best teams were Geo Core (Xq, albedo, Zhongli) or Xingqiu+Sucrose+Diona (all c6). 1.3 also immediately introduced the first “buff” to her kit with new Geo resonance and Zhongli’s buff. I know she wasn’t released yet when this happened, but it’s still worth noting that her best teams would’ve looked different if not for these changes.
In 1.6, she got new team options with a vv shred kazuha with yanfei c4, which was the first time she reasonably could have vv shred in her kit.
In 2.0, Hu Tao speedruns were buffed by the release of Ayaka’s extremely fast cryo application and res shred at c4.
In 2.2, Thoma released, who was a huge new prospect for her budget teams. Geo Core still ruled, but with some tricky specific button mashing, you could get double swirl vv shred and instructors proc with Sucrose n3, instructor Thoma, and Xingqiu. Thoma’s c6 gave extra damage to Hu Tao and survivability to budget teams looking to push her limits without Albedo.
At this point, in 2.3, the release of Cinnabar Spindle and Husk of Opulent Dreams (cheers to the wanderer lore in this artifact set) were a massive buff to Hu Tao’s best team, almost doubling Albedo’s damage.
In 2.4, it looked like opponents may catch up with the release of Yun Jin buffing Yoimiya, who was Hu Tao’s most direct competition, and Shenhe, who buffed Ayaka and Ganyu, who also were neck-and-neck with Hu Tao at the time (how times change!). This was one of her weakest points in history, with rift wolves running wild and hitting her through her shield in the abyss.
But in 2.7, we received the gift of Yelan, who finally switched up Hu Tao’s best team after years of Geo Core reigning supreme and topping abyss usages. The weird rift wolf anti-shield healing meta was coming to a close, and Hu Tao rose further than ever before, once again topping abyss charts.
In 3.0, Hydro resonance was changed to benefit her double hydro team even more with an HP increase rather than healing bonus. Another win!
In 3.1, Staff of Scarlet Sands was released, finally giving Hu Tao an option of a viable Homa replacement. It is still considered an “alternate pick” for her, but it is yet another buff to our funeral queen.
Throughout version 3 and all of Sumeru, Hu Tao’s double hydro team with Yelan, Xingqiu, and Zhongli managed to hold top placements in the abyss even despite the dendro meta. It was clear in 3.4 when the famous Hu Tao and Yelan double banner dropped that Hu Tao was far from retired as it soared to become what is still the top-selling banner of all time by almost TEN MILLION USD.
At the arrival of Fontaine, we received another buff in 4.0 with the addition of Marechausse Hunter becoming a new option for her.
However, in 4.2 with the highly-anticipated release of Furina, we could barely have predicted how incredibly Furina would buff Hu Tao. Yes, she slotted in nicely to Hu Tao teams as mentioned by the video, but not mentioned was the now fully-fledged potential of Marechausse Hunter at Hu Tao’s fingertips. Staff of Scarlet Sands also became fully viable with the release of Furina, and VV shred was added to a permanent team of Hu Tao’s with Jean’s addition to this roster.
In 4.4, as stated in the video, Xianyun finalizes Hu Tao’s endless winning streak with the addition of a new plunging playstyle, which allows players to budget away from c1 and go for Homa/SoSS and Xianyun instead.
And of course, in 4.6, we got the biggest buff to her kit in history: A friend to share the top of the charts with who will bring infinite business to her funeral parlor!! Hu Tao may be considered “dethroned” to many as the top pyro dps, but she is still fully playable alongside Arlecchino with no overlap of their best teams. (Arlecchino Bennett Kazuha Zhongli/Xiangling and Hu Tao Xingqiu Furina Jean/Xianyun) I consider this to be an absolute win for the pyro community as a whole as we get to cherish more pyros carrying us through abyss. The more red numbers, the better!

lol this got long but hi, I’m a pyro impact enjoyer. I have pulled every pyro in the game since 1.0 (even pulled on Dehya’s banner) and I’ve been on a journey to perfect my Hu Tao ever since 1.0 when I fell in love with her unreleased design back when her lower bangs weren’t straight-cut.
I always loved Hu Tao’s HP draining mechanics and her beefy health pool even when the 1.3 crowd cried that she was “squishy.” Plus, I love Xingqiu too so I always throw him in teams with her over Yelan just for my personal happiness. I remember the first time I hit 100k with her charged attack in 2.2 with the help of Thoma’s c6 and some crazy swirl shenanigans with Sucrose. It was also the first time I fully cleared Abyss, and I couldn’t have been happier. I’ve stocked up on every pyro character, a bunch of miscellaneous dps of other elements, an Arlecchino, and even a c6 wanderer, but Hu Tao is always in abyss with me. No matter the content, she always fits somewhere, and I’m excited to see how she can shine in Imaginarium Theater coming up!

I love Hu Tao so much, she's my comfort character, and I use her in the abyss all the time. It's so amazing how my Hu Tao, who I got in 1.3, still equip the same 4p CW artifacts I gave her in 1.3 and then easily clears floor 12 in under a minute. New characters and artifact sets were released, but my Hu Tao's artifacts never changed and her team is still with XQ, Kazuha, and Zhongli, but these outdated teams/artis never hindered Hu Tao. She's still super strong 🥳

No. That’s like saying since One Punch Man goes around punching people, he must be a tank support right? Nothing in her trailer screamed “tank support” and she’s always been a brawler type character in the story, always fighting
Holy shit the amount of brain dead replies.. yeah no shit her kit and the special program revealed she wasn’t a DPS, my point is her role in the story was a ruthless aggressive mercenary turned bodyguard. She absolutely should’ve been a DPS and the developers absolutely screwed the pooch on her kit. She is not viable anywhere besides the overworld and even then she still sucks at exploring along with providing quite literally nothing to the team. Everyone saying she was marketed as a tank has the hindsight after they literally told us she was going to be a tank, leading up to Dehya’s information leak, everyone expected her to be a DPS.

And it's not like she's that good at being a semi shielder for the party.
The problem is that she fails even at that. She only takes 50% of the active unit's damage, so that makes her worse than a shielder, her interrupt resist only lasts 9 seconds of the skill's 12 second duration, so also worse than a shielder, and you have to remain inside her field for the damage mitigation to actually function, so even further worse than a shielder. Her A1 that gives the resist has an 18 second cooldown so if you use sac claymore on her for permanent field uptime, you don't get permanent resist interrupt unlike every shielder ever. There is nothing in her kit whatsoever that makes her better at tanking than a basic C0 Diona with HP artifacts and a sac bow. The only thing you could remotely say is that she gets to shield all characters in her field at once, and that's not even that great because again, Diona does the same at C2! She's supposed to be a 5 star tank. They could've easily given her 100% mitigation for the active character and made the interrupt last the full 12 seconds of the skill without any cooldown, and she would STILL be worse than Diona because you have to remain in the field. I'm not even having to compare her to Zhong or Baizhu because that would just be unfair to compare her to other 5 star shielders. She can't match up
Look, truthfully I still use her in some meme teams that I enjoy exploring and bossfighting with, but she'll never make it onto an abyss lineup for me. She's just a failure of a character. She's a 5 star Xinyan and that's sad because her design is absolutely SS+ tier in my opinion. She deserved to be an absolute beast of a tank that is only outdone by the tank archon himself.
In my opinion, her skill should've give you a mobile aura that shields the active character and allies in the aura. It should've had 100% mitigation because you still have to deal with Dehya's health if you're not careful. The interrupt should last the full duration. Then lastly I think she should've seen substantial health regeneration (Like 10% per punch) tied into her burst so that there's a reason for her to be on field for more than the time it takes to tap her skill.
Dehya may work in a game with hours long epic guild boss battles like WOW for example, but with genshin having dps and reaction enabling as a core of the gameplay, a tank isnt that useful. Compared to other shilders/interruption resistance havers, the rest got a 2nd part of their kit which is usually essential for their teams. Like zhongli elemental wide res sherd +ability to buff hypercarries with petra set and xingqiu with offield hydro application. I tend to use her for enabling protecting + vapes/melts in my ganyu/nevuillete teams respectively but I feel if they made her dish out the dmg she absorbs back, it would have been a much better synergy with genshin core mechanics

the thing is unlike a lot of characters Hu Tao like every stat in the game except def, may be er as well. So anything that benefits atk scalers, hp scaler and em scalars benefits her too.

high production value for sure. vars videos have been terrible as of late. just recently he said lyney's bad because he's "locked to mono pyro" (extremely outdated, his 2 best teams aren't even mono pyro lol)
I think hu tao are pretty easy no? Just slap zhong li or other shielder so she doesn’t die easily.

I’m a Hutao main since her first rerun in v2.3, I’ve spent so long investing in her she’s in the top 3% on that ranking site, I doubt anything would sway my dedication at this point

Also, with 3.0 came a change in Hydro Resonance (from healing boost to Max HP boost), cementing the viability of double Hydro teams for Director Hu.
It took a literal Harbinger to contest Hu Tao’s place, and even then Hu Tao is still often the first, and arguably best, option for a Pyro DPS.
That also rank 4 who is on the cusp of bieng god level powerful
True that, only at extremes of investment is arlecchino beating her and thats mainly just because for some reason most of hu tao's cons are supportive and tbh when comparing characters at c6 lvl its an almost different game entirely (like how klee goes from a meh dps into a oip tier support for melt/vape teams at c6 for example)
Finally an actual human being with rational thinking. Arle is only barely better by like an incredibly small amount. The only time arle really becomes stronger then her is with her cons

Atleast for me personally my hu tao c0r0 plunge team with furina c2 does faster abyss clears in AOE than my c1r1 arle hypercarry and only a bit slower in ST. How ppl r saying otherwise idk

She's so good arle kit is basically 90% based on her but with bod and slightly more advanced. Which is a compliment since hu tao is a 1.x dps

Hu Tao is great, I've come to appreciate her even more now that Arlecchino came out, as someone who refuses to use Bennett most of the time, Hu Tao is miles better in my eyes than Arlecchino because the latter needs Bennett's circle to perform at her peak.

No one "needs" bennett, there’s plenty of different, more interesting options

I don't know what team you're playing but Arlecchino double Hydro (Yelan Xingqiu) with Zhongli works for me. I refuse to use Bennett too

She was my first 5 stars and is the best dps I have. Although I only have nahida and scara both of whom aren't very well built

I rolled C1R1 Hu Tao on the first day of her first banner, and I've only used her once in abyss in all that time since then. I always just found Klee more fun to play, compared to all pyro on-fielders really, and since abyss is easy I don't need anyone stronger 😅
Tbh most high damage dealers are generally not fun to play with. I was a Hu Tao main as well during early days of genshin, never felt lack of dps with her. But never had fun with her as well. I do have a top 5% hu tao with 2 pc gilded, 2 pc wanderer but most of the times she is benched.

@Chestyfriend I personally think neuv is very fun to play, but that could just be me being a very big fan of Dragon Ball, and seeing neuv essentially doing a kamehameha is very fun to me.

I think the core reason of why Hu Tao is unkillable is that her ability is extremely simple, its just tied to normal attacking.
Like you have other characters with more detailed mechanics that make them suitable for more specific occasions and less effective in others. Hu Tao kit is like - yeah so you have stick right, push button, number big - good. That's it, like what changes can fail her, as long as there is an enemy and he is not immune to her damage, she's on top.
I think it's actually the reason why so many characters that were early introduced in the game and are not even 5 stars rule the meta - they are just so easy conceptually that they mix with anything and always find a use.
Well, and also it's just her design,its just a golddigger.
I mean her cancels offer a lot of diversity in combat so I'm not sure about simplicity, neuvillete is just e q setup then back to neuvi and hold m1, raiden is e setup then q and n1c or mash
@@Zythroxes yeah, well, i didnt mean she is like the only character like that in the game, raiden and neuvilette are also top tier characters. Its not actually even a big deal, considering you can do anything with any character in genshin, but well then there is even no point in this video.
I think that there are just more "problematic" characters, that work in specific teams, like faruzan that you need c6 or something like that

Maybe Hutao is simple, maybe she's not. Regardless, it's not the reason why she still stands till this day.
Childe's gameplay is not simple. It's arguably the hardest-to-learn character in the game, yet he's still very strong, and remember he's one of the first limited characters.
Why are these OG characters still strong? No, it's not because they're simple. It's because Mihoyo didn't know how insane elemental application could be. Xiangling, Xingqiu, Hutao, Childe all are broken because they apply elements on every single hit, they'll never die and only get stronger... unless Mihoyo decide to release more broken ones in the same role with them (like Neuvi and Arlec, these dang characters are boring-asses who are strong just because they have very high scaling).
I genuinely don't think the pyro archon is gonna significantly powercreep Arlechinno and Hutao. Knowing Genshin and how they design character kits they'll probably go the furina route and make her viability situational/with a caveat.
Archons are made as supports or sub DPS characters.

I really want the pyro archon to be a support, eather a buffer or a sub-dps. pyro has so many dps characters its not even funny, we want a Bennett or Xl replacement.
I would love if the pyro archon was a good offield pyro applier so the meta of reverse melt/vape gets revived again. Especially with the only options for now are kazhua swiveling pyro, dehya slow skill procs, dendro burn with nahdia, pyrornado..etc which all come with their own problems so they are usually only found in whale teams that can afford to kill stuff in one hit (think ayaka c6 melt for example)

@@jeremyasinas2773 She now has a place were she can work, but she is far from relevant. I hope she actually gets good seeing as I like her and have gotten C2 off the standard banner, but she is still struggling to take the place of 3rd rate 4 stars. In some burgeon teams, she is stronger than Toma.

My first 5-star when I started playing in 2021. I think her rerun was around Halloween too. Still use her to this day.
I saw Brave Frontier RPG at the beginning, I was so happy about it
Seeing my number 1 favorite character still sticking around from her debut is impressive. It reminds me of something that I grew up with, which is the Grave Digger monster truck. The two would have somewhat of a rough start, but with advancements throughout, it got better in the long term and became a household name. Because of how similar these two are, especially the idea and style behind it, I even made a drawing of the paint scheme from the truck and made it with Hu Tao's color scheme, style, and the tombstones having the names of various characters from the game.
A main that died. My Aloy. Will never give her up as my 1st main.

I love her so much, she has been my main for a long long while, it kinda swaps with neuvilette and arlecchino teams but even I still greatly love her 🖤🖤🖤
SHe is also one of the my 3 (non standard banner) characters that has a constellation (at c1) while my others are c2 Ayaka and c2 Nahida. that shows how i much i appeciate our eccentric Pyro Funeral director.
You forgot mentioning the change to hydro resonance from healing bonus to bonus HP, which basically buffed her whole double hydro team.
Hu Tao is still my number one favorite character in the game. Furina is super close though.
I would like to point out that VV vape teams have been her highest dps teams, arguably to this day.
Hu Tao - Yelan - Bennett - Kazuha is the DPS ceiling, though maybe Furina topped it.
Hu Tao - Xingqiu - Bennett - Kazuha makes you almost invulnerable and you never have to worry about hydro application.
Double hydro was all the rage as a new shiny team after Yelan release, but VV vape was still used all this time. I think you should have at least mentioned it.
Here is to hoping that I can keep using my favorite coffin salesman for years to come. Maybe we get such overpowered cryo supports in the future that double cryo becomes viable :)

I'm glas she is able to stay good for so long. Hu tao has been in my team since the day she released, and has been my favorite character in the game. Her personality, story, looks, everything I enjoy. Even if she wont be super good later on, im glad to have been able to have her on my team for a good 3 Years.
(Regardless what the "meta" is, I might still have her in, I just play to have fun, dont care much about Meta stuff nowadays. Especially with all my breaks from Genshin I take)

i think it's going to depend on what new mechanics natlan introduces for pyro. fontaine brought us the sheer raw power of hydro even separate from dendro, and also gave us bond of life. i have this sneaking suspicion that, given natlan is the nation of resurrection, we might get some kind of mechanic that involves low HP or even character death/revival, in which case hu tao might either explode in relevance or completely fall off.
there'll probably be some new supports that enable hu tao to get even stronger
neck and neck with cappuccino probably but it's kind of fun to have choices if you prefer one to the other
they're both insanely strong though i think hu tao teams are easier to put together
as a Hu Tao stan/main it’s crazy how far she’s gotten despite Arlecchino coming out and actually now having someone to compete with. also her being in a plunge team is fun imo

Unless they release a pyro charcter with no ICD, Hu Tao will always have her place in top dps.
In natlan, if pyro archon is a off field support then Hu Tao and Arlecchino are safe.
In Snezhaya, if they release top tier cryo supports, I am seeing double cryo melt Hu Tao team.
More buffs she can receive in future might be -
1. Dedicated artifact set
2. Hp buffer support
3. Charged atk buffer support (very less chance)
I don't play Genshin anymore, but this is why Hu Tao is, and will always be, my favorite character in GI.
I bet they'll add a cryo xingqiu but the trigger being charged attacks rather than normals so only she can benefit from it
I dont know how they kept buffing her, but i know for sure that i will play her until the game ends and especially that I will love and appreciate her for the rest of my life

This girl has cleared so many abyss cycles for me and I have her fully invested. The double Hydro with zhonghli has excellent and perfect synergy.. I don’t care what new pyro unit comes out in the future. I am not betraying my girl.
I absolutely love Hu Tao, her playstyle, personality and design. I have been playing with her comfortably almost since the very beginning, and she is still one on my most favorites. She's absolutely capable to clear the Abyss, and fun in the overworld. I have high hopes for future Cryo characters, off field Cryo supports and applicators, and possibly we will see Melt Hu Tao breaking new ground.
Also, proud Arlecchino owner, and I love them both. They go hand in hand, clearing their respective halves of the Abyss, and I could not be happier)
I started building my Hu Tao during Arlecchino's banner couldn't spend primos when I had an unbuilt Hu Tao sitting unused. But since I got it done I'm in love with her she's so strong even with my goofy build I have now. Since I got her I now have 2 abyss teams and got her to hit 200k was so happy considering she's not built the best and I'm not great at using her

It's so nostalgic looking back on those original leaks. I was drawn to her design instantly, thinking she was gonna be some vampire grim reaper kinda girl (not too far off!) and she's been one of my mains ever since alongside Xiao, even through my multiple breaks from the game. Glad to see my original two still maintain meta relevance in the modern day.
Imagine that the Pyro archon's kit is made in a way that it boosts hu tao's Pryo damage a lot it could make her in a chevreuse overload team the new best team or at worst an equal option to her current team
Why I play Hu Tao :
1. Dash, become invisible before using disappearing skill in Windtrace, making enemy player think I disappear longer than usual

Also, in spite of not having a dedicated signature artifact set, she's been able to use several sets effectively through the years. The OG CWoF, the sweaty Shime, GD for Scarlet Sands setups and the folks who couldn't roll EM subs and finally MH for Furina teams.
She is like Incineroar. The one who forced everything to be ashes just by existing.

Since Yelan came out, I have used the exact same team in every abyss. Hu Tao, yelan, xingqui, and thoma and I never struggle. She will stay relevant forever XD. Yes even in this abyss, she really is the brute force character. You can even put her against Pyro resistant enemies and you’re still fine because yelan and xingqui do so much dmg. Truly a character of the ages.👻🫡
I still don’t have Hu Tao saddly but she is still one of my favorite characters. She has just a fun personality and her gameplay looks really fun. I have arlecchino so I probably don’t really need her but I’ll be pulling her the next time she comes around.
I really hope that she someone still manages to remain relevant for as long as she can cause it would be so funny that the funeral director refuses to die off.

Also at 2:31, I gotta disagree with the attention. No one kew she was a character until her teaser dropped, probably because shes so intertwined with death and thats just bad taste with the 1.3 latern rite and Chinese New Year and all that, so she wasnt included in the live. So really, Hu Tao was out of the blue, completely unexpected, therefore no one really knew what she was like, which is why she only grossed around 12.5 million dollars (may sound like alot but trust me, its not) and also why her rerun was so highly anticipated
Xianyun and Furina severely buffed her and gave her a completely different team comp from her main rival, Arlechinno. It's almost hilarious how unpowercrept she remains, and I say this as a C1 Arle haver whose favorite way to clear abyss is Arle and Hu Tao on opposite sides.
Yeah, I guess you could say Fontaine was a blessing and a curse, with so many more opportunities and challenges for her.@@bumibomber
