I put the slash pickups into the epiphone slash les paul and they are a night and day difference. It's a shame they didn't come with them stock.
That’s lame they didn’t. I mean, is the signature guitar after all…!
I’m thinking about doing the same thing also, I have $1500 to spend on a guitar.
@@willman43Why on earth would you throw away $1500 on a Epiphone and a set of $300 pickups when you could either buy a used Gipson or save up a bit more and buy a new one? I do not care what you throw on that Epiphone, the fact is and always will be that it’s a cheap Chinese mass produced slave labor guitar and nothing you throw on it will change this! So if you go this route I sure hope you love it because you’re certainly never going to get anything close $1500 for it after you’ve bought it! The Gipson on the other hand even in a broken state will always be worth something and chances are it’d be more Valuable than that tricked out Epiphone you’re considering.
@@werewolflover8636 Good advice. I certainly don’t have thousands to spend on a Gibson and the lower end ones don’t have the greatest reviews from what I’ve been reading. I appreciate your response.
@@willman43don’t listen to that Gibson snob. I bought a used epiphone LP with the slash anaconda burst. I swapped the strings and bought the Slash 2.0 pickups from Seymour Duncan and I am absolutely loving this thing.
I say save your money and get the epi
New pickups are a lot better! Really enjoyed this video, Pat! 🤘🖤🔥
Hearing it back again I notice they are way more define. But the question remains, is it worth the time, money and effort ?
@@PatPosse I honestly have to agree that it's better to invest in an entirely new guitar. But, there are some circumstances where people don't like doing so. For those type of people, hell yeah it is!
That’s right ! That was my verdict too 😉
It's one thing to do a pickup upgrade an Epi Studio or Epi 100 Les Paul, but the Standard already comes loaded with Probuckers that are closely comparable to DD Pearly Gates.
The Epi Les Paul Standard is already excellent.
I would have to agree. Bigger upgrade on a studio or lp100. You’ll notice more of a difference for sure!
I'm curious how much brighter the sound was attributed to the pots vs the pickups. What pots did you take out and what did you put in. I know the pickups will sound different, but the pots make a pretty big difference too. Generally speaking, 500k pots will sound brighter than 250k.
They definitely make a bit of a difference…
On this particular case, Both old and new pots were 500k. Old ones were stock Epiphone ones and the new ones were DiMarzios.
Nice job. The new pickups sounded great.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video!! Thanks for watching and commenting 🤘🏻
Good idea for a shootout! I wonder how much difference in tone the replaced electronics have. But it's definitely not night and day and not worth the money IMO either. Would be interesting to hear a high end LP with AP2s against it...
That would definitely be a great video! Too bad I don’t know anyone with a guitar like that 😅
Changing the electronics makes a massive difference. I found this out when I bought a new harness/controls for a tele that had CTS/switchcraft jack. The new harness from Toneman guitar has Bourns pots and premium wire/everything else…it difference was as dramatic as changing 💩 pups to nice ones.
New pickups and parts definitely sound better!
Tighter for sure!
i just ordered a set of Slash 2.0 to put in my Gibson Les Paul Custom. The 498 bridge pickup in the LP Custom is just a little too hot, thin, and fizzy for my liking. I have unpotted Gibson PAFs in my Custom Shop R9 LP and my Custom shop 64 SG. I love them. I didn't want a 3rd guitar with the same pickups, so I could have some diversity in tone. Hoping these Slash 2.0 do the trick.
Awesome! Hope you love them!
dont those newer epiphones come with full sized CTS pots stock?
I don’t know how “new” this one was. It’s been 4 years since I recorded that video and it wasn’t brand new then (I don’t think…)
Yes. From 2020 they come with CTS pots and vastly improved pickups. Prior to that Epiphone pickups and pots were average at best.
@@Jason.King.at.your.service So that answers that... I assumed they had changed pots but I wasn't sure when. Thanks for clarifying that!
My 2020 Epiphone Heritage Les Paul Classic had Made in Korea pots and Probuckers. I copper shielded and grounded the cavities, put in CTS 500k pots (even though DiMarzio recommended 250k for their pickup), two 0.047uF Soviet missile paper in oil caps, a Pure Tone jack, used grounded shield jacketed conductors, installed an upgraded switch, put a DiMarzio D Activator in the bridge, and a Duncan SH-2N Jazz in the neck. Big difference. Huge tone improvement. Guitar was not built bad. It had a good maple top and mahogany neck and bottom which are comparable to the Gibson Les Paul for tone. They just weren't as pretty, which has virtually no effect on tone (see engineering dynamics free air vibration for explanation of critical parameters that affect tone). The new parts cost of the just upgrade is about $220. The total cost of purchasing my used guitar and used pickups, new switch and new jack for the mods (I'm a certified tech so I did my own work without charge), including a premium soft case, with some individualizing cosmetic upgrades came to the $550 ballpark. Tech time for the hour and a half work should be about $200. So the whole thing should be gotten for about $750. Several pro musicians played it and found it a very acceptable option. Compared to Gibson, I've played worse and better sounding Les Paul's. So, IMHO, this $750 Epiphone compares favorably to an off the shelf Gibson Les Paul that averages about 3 times the price. There isn't much to hot rod on a Gibson Les Paul; they come stock in good shape. So, IMHO, someone can select a well made Epiphone and with a little elbow grease to change the electronics, they can have a sleeper that sounds comparable to a much more valuable Gibson.
Are the stock pickups Probuckers? If so, the Probuckers Classics are made to the same specs as Gibson 57 Classics while the Probucker + are made to the same specs as Gibson Burstbuckers.
No idea, it’s been a while and I never checked. If that was the case, that further proves the point that the pickups are definitely not the problem and changing them on an Epiphone is just a waste of money
I played Epiphone Les Paul Standard for years and now I own a Gibson Les Paul classic. it's like day and night. The Gibson sounds so much better. I love the burstbuckers. Now I don't know what to do with my Epiphone... Sell it or keep it and replace the probuckers with my Seymour Duncan Mayhem sh 6 humbuckers which I got in my squier mustang
I know right? They are SO different… I guess it would work as a backup but I wouldn’t invest more money into it. Honestly I’d probably sell it and get another Gibby 😁.
@@PatPosse I gotta agree with Pat on this one
😁😁 +1!
On the basis of this video I have just bought slash's pick ups. I love playing to myself and practice a lot of blues jams. I can't justify spending $3.5k on a les paul as I've got a epiphone les paul which I bought years ago and just got out of the loft. Looking forward to getting mine upgraded from my guitar shop. Also buying an orange crush amp.
Nice! Your Epiphone will sound better for sure! The point of this video is basically “don’t expect these pickups to make your Epiphone be as good as a Gibson” but if you manage your expectations, it’s worth upgrading. I would still prefer a 799 Gibson Les Paul over an Epiphone standard. That’s what I mean by “save your money and get a Gibson instead”. A 3.5k les Paul (talking custom here) is definitely on a different league! The orange is also going to make you very happy! Thanks for watching and commenting. Let me know how it turns out! Best of luck !
@@PatPosse Oh man this is interesting. In which aspects the 799 Gibson is better than the upgraded Epiphone? Thank you. Cheers!
@@PatPosse Oh, would it be a good idea to upgrade a 799 Gibson?
@@preciseaudioblog I would upgrade a 799 Gibson for sure. I have before and they always turn out better. The main difference between the Epiphones and Gibsons are the wood qualities and materials used, binding, electronics, finish.... but mainly the Wood. Although on day one an Epi might sound and/or play better than a Gibson the Gibson will get better over time and age way better than the Epiphany whilst an Episode will stay the same or get worse over the years. This is not ALWAYS the case but it is for the most part. A vast majority of the time. I'll make a video about the differences between Epiphones and Gibsons, Mex and American Fenders and Taylors and what I have learnt first hand at their factories. Hope to help!
@@PatPosse Absolutely. And how about the Sire L7? Have you tried that one? Cheer!
I just installed these in my '97 Epiphone Snakepit and, holy shit, I thought I loved it before but these absolutely brought it to life!
Nice!! On some axes it just works! What pickups did it have before? Stock? Where they any good?
@Pat Posse Stock epiphone. Checking with a meter the stock pups are about twice the output as the SDs and much muddier. I should have done this a long time ago :)
Oh yeah I noticed that right away!! Awesome bro, happy you love them!
Slashes main guitar is not a 50s les paul . It's a 59 replica built by a boutique buider named. Chris Derrig . It's the famous Aopetite les Paul . Slash has vintage 58 and 59 les Paul's but they are not used on tour and they don't have ducnan pickups . All of his vintage les Paul's have vintage Gibson PAF pickups . The Apetite les paul which again is a copy has the original Duncan Alnkco 2 Pro.
Yup, you are right.
the guitars that gibson sells from his firm come with gibson pickups but slash's personal guitars all have SD alnico pro except some come with a slash gibson bucker which is more or less an alnico pro and SD alnico 3 and SD slash burstbucker
Chris Derrig worked at a shop in Lawndale CA off of Redondo Beach BLVD. I did not know this till years later when I walked into the shop and was told by the owner. Shop is called Music Works I believe.
With Jessica-as he calls it-he does have seymour duncan pickups. His own signature pickups, no less. I can’t say if that guitar was a gibson, epiphone or a replica
@Jaqoum_The_Wizard_King you got that right, and Jessica is a factory stock B Gibson 87. It isn't the same Guitar as the Gerrig 59 copy. Slash does use his signature pickups on his Jessica live, but he doesn't play the Gerrig live and that one still has the original Gerrig pickups in it.
I bought some chineese slash copies. I should install them. Im so busy these days though I would love to put some in my epiphone LP. You got me excited now.
It’d be nice to know how good (or bad) they are !
@@PatPosse Suppose to be same spec. I would like to know too. Reviews on @li &xpr*$$ were very positive.
I Love Slash's Gear 👍🤘Good Video Dude Killed It !!!
Nice! Thanks man! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Great video and good suggestion about selling it and putting that money for a new one. But when you were comparing, old pick up was put in mono and SD was put in stereo so obviously, SD would sound better. Overall good video.
Hey man! It's been a while... I don't recall that but it would have been a pretty dumb mistake if true lol. As far as I remember it was both recorded stereo, fully panned. I might have messed something up in video editing.. on the solos though they are definitely both mono tracks dead center if there's any doubts. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Idk, I bought a lower end made in China Gretsch recently and did a few mods including some pickup upgrades, it's now worth as much as a Japanese higher end one and I didn't put in even half the amount. I have done this with other guitars as well.. kinda depends on who's asking I guess
Thanks for the video. Way more detail with the new hardware. I got a Grote 335 copy off Amazon for $129 bucks, delivered. I spent about $300 on hard ware, pick ups, locking tuners etc and it plays as good as my original Gibson 335...and I can drive like I stole it. Well worth getting a cheaper guitar, as long as the neck feels good, and upgrading the pickups. The tone is all in the pickups.
Hey man! Glad you enjoyed it! Feel is definitely the most important part to me as well! Pair some good pickups with a good amp and you are good to go!
@@PatPosse Yes, feel is so important. Did you see Rick Beato's vid on string gauge? Very little difference in tone between light and heavy gauge, but they "feel" different and so they influenced the player.
@@charliemcgrain I saw it! I've always favored 9's so that was reassuring hahaha. I play completely different whenever i'm in someone else's studio or playing someone else's guitar and it's got 10s on it... Feel is super important to me and my bends and vibratos!
@@PatPosse I use Ernie Ball Super Slinky 8's. I put those on my acoustic too and love them.
8s on acoustic??? do they stay in tune??
Please replace those Probuckers. That's all I have to say. I have an Epihone LP 50s Standard and I put in Seymour Duncan Seth Lovers. It is a huge improvement!
I also have an Epiphone SG 60s Standard which now has Gibson Burstbuckers 2 and 3 in it. What a difference. You won't be disappointed! Thx for the video 🙂
Nice ! I’ll keep that in mind if I ever come across someone who wants to upgrade an Epi!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have this _exact_ guitar. It kinda sounds muddy and wooly to me, even after adjusting the pickups to ensure they're at the right height. So when researching what new pickups could do imagine my delight at stumbling across your video. I wish the video had AB tests of the clean output. Also I'm curious how much impact you think changing the pots had on it, and why you didn't consider the bridge.
Hi there! It honestly wasn't something I planned and I guess it could have been better. Changing the pots was something I told the guy cause, if you are going through all the trouble, you might as well go all in and change all the electronics so they are all up to par. It probably makes a difference in sound but not a HUGE one. I can tell you they do feel better! Changing the bridge and nut was discussed but we both felt it was too much of an investment for what he was trying to do.
Thanks you for watching and commenting! Hope it helps!!
I recently bought a 2nd hand Epiphone Les Paul Standard fitted with Seymour Duncan Blackouts. This gives me some idea of the difference from stock.
Glad to help! That’s a cool upgrade! You can always sell them if you don’t like them and make some better coin than with stock pickups!
You made the comment in the video, and in one of your responses in the comments, "manage your expectations". Good thing to do in all endeavors.
Oh yeah!! I’m all about that… 😁
The LP he used on "Appetite" (and other albums) was a copy anyway, so basically an Epiphone with Duncan pickups that these replicate.
From what I’ve heard and read, that guitar was way better than an epiphone. Not Gibson branded but still pretty good
Ive done all this upgrades to an epi and let me tell you the most important thing before any upgrade is to level the frets. Its night and day. They dont do that at the epiphone factory. Thats the first thing to do, and then change the bridge or at least remove the metal string on the bridge cause all the noise between notes comes from that string. Only after upgrade the electronics and pick ups. Cause its enough to have 1 high fret to make your guitar sound terrible
That’s so true! Frets are criminally overlooked! What do you replace the metal string on the bridge with?
@PatPosse with nothing. Just took it off. Just carefull when you change the strings dont flip the guitar cause the saddles will fall. Thats what this metal string does. Noise and holding the saddles
@@דורון-צ2ג Cool, I thought maybe it held the saddles in place and added some needed tension to it...
Now this is some comparison.. kudos.. loved the video
Thank you! Happy you liked it! 💪🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Gibson les Paul’s are a waste of money. The epiphone sounds just as good. I have both and it’s not worth the $2000 difference at all
Sell one and invest in hearing aids 😉. 🤣🤣 I kid, to each their own
Haha of course the gibson is better but to me it’s not $2000 better
I hear ya. It’s like cars… should a Ferrari be 10 times as much as a Corolla? Is there really that much of a difference? Nah. But it’s all in the materials used and labor. Usually the more money they cost, the smaller the impact it makes…
The A2 Pro Slash is a good pup set. Just a good, balanced rock pickup
Definitely not a bad set. I just don't think it was worth the time and investment in this particular instance.
I thought about changing pick ups, changing amp, guitar, strings and even picks.
But what actually changed my sound for good in a dramatic way was swapping my amps pick ups. Now that’s a serious change tone change.
And it’s way cheaper than buying a more expensive amp or a Gibson guitar. It really blew my mind how radical the sound changed. I swapped my origin cabinet amps for greenbacks and it feels like I had bought a new amp and a new guitar.
I’d say that choosing your speakers is even more important than choosing your guitar or amp.
I’m with you 100% on that. Guitars for me are more of a connection to the instrument and the feel of it. Of course, tone plays a role but the amp and the speakers make waaaaay more of a difference in overall sound than the guitar or pedals 👍🏻👍🏻
I have 4 or 5 sets of Gibson takeoffs which I got locally for 80-100 bucks. One guy threw in the Gibson pots and wiring. Upgrading doesn't have to be expensive. I have a Slash Gibson and 4 others. I still like Epiphones, and have bought them cheap to upgrade.
That is 100% true! Sometimes you can get a deal and soup them up
Nice video. I would have preferred a direct comparison though. The new ones are clearly mixed more split than the old ones. Sounds like going from stereo to mono so of course the new ones sounds better. Just my 2¢
Hey man thanks! I was still pretty new to TH-cam then and there’s a ton of things I could have done better. It wasn’t my guitar either so I didn’t have time to reshoot things either and of course, Murphy’s law… two of my oldest and worst videos are the biggest ones in my channel haha.
I picked up an epiphone lesson Paul studio with stock humbucker in the bridge, a Seymore Duncan in the neck and the volume knob moved to where the switch originally was. I haven't dug into it yet, but any ideas on why someone would do those mods?
No idea. I mean, the neck pickup is usually the worse of the two so that I get. The volume being there is just odd lol.
Im doing a complete restoration (new picks, bridge, lock tuners etc.) of my epi les paul that i have own for about 20yrs
I have sentimental value to that guitar, would i do it in a brand new one? Hell no!
Exactly! Hope she turns out amazing though! Let me know when it’s done! Love stories like these!
Tbh, I prefer the Epiphone pups for rhythm but the slash ones are fantastic for lead!
I can see that… 👍🏻👍🏻
well ... that was a noticeable boost in the upper mids and it sounded like the old plated pickups had compression like you were clipping the input. how much did the upgrade cost?
It's been years.. I have no recollection of it... might have been about 150 dollars for the pickup pair and about 75 more for parts... that's not including labor... definitely not worth it
ya agreed
A for me all the way... lower the gain and play with the Mids on the EQ and the original pickups were the same or even better
I’m with you. It does not justify the trouble or expense to replace them
solid video. thanks
Glad to help! Happy you enjoyed it! 😁thanks for watching and commenting 💪🏻
Not even a fair A/B test. We dont know what signal chain, and nothing was played clean then gained up. There also was no clean up test to demonstrate the benefit of good pots/electronics. You should A/B clean, dirty, in the mix, solo and clean up back to back with the old set up bs the new. That would demonstrate the true benefits, and show the people what their investment would bring.
This was done for men with hair on their balls who want to play metal like MEN. Next time do your own video and have us complain about random bullshit for a change 😉
Do you recommend these pickups for high gain? (More than Slash used to use) I usually play metal and I have a cheap guitar, so I’m not sure to spend more money for pickups than I did for my guitar. Thanks! 🤘🤘
I would not. but help me steer you in the right direction... What's your current setup (gtr, amp, pedals) and how heavy are we talking? You might be better off putting those bucks into a pedal or amp... 🤘
Guitar: Eko Les Paul VL-480
Amp: Marshall MG50GFX
Pedals: I don't remember the name of my distortion pedal, but usually I just plug my guitar in the amp without pedals.
I usually play songs from Metallica, Slayer and Chidren Of Bodom. My optimal tone would be something like Sodom-In War And Pieces (I love that tone and thrash metal in general)
@@begoz5223 Cool! The Marshall MG50GFX does not have particularly great distortion tones.. something about the pre amp and the speaker... You might benefit from a pedal like the TS9 tubescreamer to get a little bit more grit and boost that preamp to get more compression and saturation (plus the Tone knob which is always good to have) I'll send you links to all of these www.zzounds.com/a--3981266/item--IBATS9 ... maybe try that distortion pedal of yours through the send and return... might be cool! I don't know what pickups come in the Eko LP but the Slash are NOT high gain at all... if you want to go that route (while i don't think it'll made a huge difference) maybe try the DiMarzio Super distortions www.zzounds.com/a--3981266/item--DIMSUPRDST or the Seymour Duncan JB www.zzounds.com/a--3981266/item--SEMSH4 ... or try the Seymour Duncan Invaders www.zzounds.com/a--3981266/item--SEMSH8B if your dare lol. Again, I would invest in a pedal to push the front end of that amp first. (also easier to try out and send back if not entirely happy with the results)...
Hope this helps! Get back to me if you try any of this out!
@@PatPosse It seems that SD JB is really a legendary pickup… I find it everywhere. Anyways my Marshall amp has a very good clean and crunch tone imo, I love them but as I said my main genres are heavier. I thought I found a very good distortion eq but there’s something wrong in it, I need to find a way. Before buying it I had a Mooer Hornet, little and cheap but with a more metal tone.
My pedal is Digitech Tonedriver Overdrive, I found out, I could try it like you said but I don’t know exactly what is “Send and Return”, I mean, it’s not the same of Guitar-Pedal-Amp, right?
@@begoz5223 JB is a killer pickup! The Send/Return is a different way of hooking up your pedal, you'll find those connections in the back of your amp (I checked). What you want to do is connect your guitar straight into the input of the amp and then take a cable from the send jack of the back of your amp into the input on your pedal and then another cable from the output of your pedal into the return of the amp. That will have a completely different effect on your sound when engaging the pedal. It might get a little "hummy" some loops do unfortunately. But nothing that a Noise Gate pedal won't fix. If you like the sound your money should go towards that instead!
There's more clarity and definition in SD ApH-III Slash model ...This SD have a low output and need a little boosting to play at the best. I've got a bridge and neck model on my Vintage V100 (a Les Paul model) and they sounding amazing! 🎸
I agree. These are very low output. They do sound good though.
The output is not that low . They are actually considered to be vintage hot or vintage over wound. The neck is 8k and the Bridge falls between 8.5k and 8.8k which is considered a hotter vintage output. Most vintage Gibson pickups like PAFs were usually between 7 5 k and 8k. Gibson patent numbers were usually 7.8k to 8k and 70s gibson patent number pups were usually 7.3 k to 7.6k.
Most PAf replica sets have a 7.5k neck and 8k to 8.2k bridge. The Duncan seth lovers have an 7.5k neck and 8 3 bridge Gibson custombuckers which is their most accurate PAf copy is usually 8k in both postions . So while the slash set are certainly not high output by any stretch I would hesitate to put them in the low output category. I have had 2 sets of these pickups and the had a little extra boost and pushed the amp a little harder then my seth lovers and custombuckers . They were also identical in output as my Burstbucker 2 and 3 sets which have more kick then my other pickups.
Awesome video. Overall, I preferred the new pups, but the old ones had a little something extra on occasion. BTW, she cleaned up beautifully.
Thanks man! Yeah I agree, the old ones had a little warmth to them that was pretty cool. Looks way better now doesn’t it? 😁
@@PatPosse blown away at the mirror like finish
That’s MusicNomad Care products for ya. Love that stuff
I enjoyed this video
Awesome! Thank you!!! Glad you did
Moding an epiphone with better pickups and electronics is not a waste of money. I fact a moded epi is a better guitar then any of the lower end gibsons . Even the lower end gibsons have crap electronics. They have PCB boards instead of hand wired harnesses . They have crappy low grade pots and caps and low end gibson pickups are not much better than epiphone pickups. The 490s the 498t which gibosn puts in most of their low end guitars are awful. With an epiphone if you swap out all the electronics you will still spend less then you would on a low end gibson and it will sound better. The newer high end epiphones with gibosm electronics like the 59 les paul the 61 les paul/SG and the Bonamassa Lazarus have all more than held their own agianst their Gibson custom shop counterparts and if the epiphones all had custombuckers like the gibsons have or if the gibsons all had Bursrbuckers like the epis I bet the sound quality would have been even closer .
I disagree 100%. Here's the facts, An Epiphone might sound close or even better at first but the woods won't age the same as the cheaper (real) Gibsons. Faded's, tributes, jr's etc don't count.
Also, I own 2 Custom Shop Les Pauls (both KILLER guitars) and they both have the 490-498 combo, they sound amazing. Again, it's all about the wood and guitar they are amplifying... I realize most people can't or won't buy a Gibson and that's fine, but saying an Epi is equal or better is just ignorant.

With all the gain and distortion... does it really matter?
Yes.
“nO kLiN toNeS = uSeLEes” 😂😂🤡🤡
Would it be worth it if I put that pickups to a Gibson les paul tribute goldtop?
Only if you are really unhappy with the original pickups. These have less gain for sure but they are very similar in specs.
Les Paul tribute comes with very good pickups anyway. It all comes down to taste.
Dang. I came to this video because I was thinking of upgrading my Epiphone Classic PRO pickups to a set of Gibson 490R and 498T. Different pickups from this video but now not sure it would be worth the money 🤔 In this vid i preferred the Epi Bridge but the Slash neck... But not overly either way...

@@PatPosse 🤣 i don't even what's Epiphone , in this video u show something like pickus Or i don't know, I just google Epiphone and it show me some black guitar,
Black guitar = black metal
@@rockandrollchildren6662 hahaha Epiphone is a second tier guitar, it’s owned by Gibson and they hold the licensing so they can make “copies” of Gibsons at a lower price (and lower quality obviously). You can always read up on the brands by googling “epiphone brand history” for instance.
ummm...i think that's a VERY Slash sound and.... KILLER
Glad you enjoy it!
Even the background track got clearer.
Yeah I didn’t realize when I exported it that one was panned and the other one was not 🤦🏻♂️
Nice playing.
Thanks a lot!
Sounds a lot better!!!
More definition and More quality than the original ones
I agree ! I just don’t think it’s worth the investment. Maybe if it were cheaper. Also if you sell the old electronics and pickups you might make some of that money back…
Cool video man 👊😃👌
Thank you! Which pickup configuration did you like better?
Pat Posse I’ve got to be honest, I didn’t think they sounded bad in the first place.. obviously the Duncan’s are the better pickups, but then it seems a bit weird throwing a set of pickups that are essentially 70% of the cost of the guitar in. I think the upgrade for a guitar like this is Iron Gear or something like that. But to answer the question, clearly the winner was the Duncan’s 👌👍🏼
@@StompSlaps I’m with you 100%. I tried to convince him not to waste his money on the epiphone and pickups from the get go but whatever. It made for an interesting video. The Duncan’s are better for sure but I don’t think it was worth the investment…
Pat Posse So by that logic would it be worth the investment putting them in a £2000 Gibson? Are they really that special? I feel like pickups have at this point become a mythological creature in terms of price. They are small magnets, bobbins, copper wire and wax… the sum of these parts being perhaps, at retail pricing, £30… 🤷♂️😂
@@StompSlaps I don’t know, the way I feel about guitars and pickups is that I would buy a guitar if I like it as it is, I don’t buy a guitar thinking about changing pickups in the future… that being said, I’m sure the same pickups would sound way better on a Gibson. 🤘🏻
It sounds very close to slash's velvet revolver...
Nice !
New pickups sound way better! Especially on higher notes, the Epiphone stock pickups seem to perform weak - I have the same problem with my old Epiphone LP 100. Maybe I'll have to think about some pickup exchange too.
Great job and nice comparison, thanks! :)
It makes more or less of a difference depending on whether you are listening to it on headphones, speakers, or studio monitors, i've found... glad to help my bro! LP100 is a hell of a guitar for the money! I had one for the longest time and loved her dearly! Played Many shows with it!
Much much brighter
And tighter!
This is why I don’t bother. I considered it until 6 months into owning it I started having serious issues with the neck and frets. Now it’s for sale 😂
Good for you! It’s really not worth it tbh UNLESS you happen to have an exceptional one (they do show up every now and then) where the wood, frets and craftsmanship is excellent. Then, maybe 🤔…
That's pretty interesting!!
😁 thanks! Which set did you like better A or B?
@@PatPosse Definitely B
Nice! That further clears my point! Out of curiosity, did you watch it with speakers, headphones or cell phone speakers? Cheers !
@@PatPosse Headphones
Excellent ! Thanks 🤘🏻
That makes sense! Good for him ! 🤘🏻
They were recorded differently...
No they weren’t. The only part were I messed up was on one rhythm part were I bounced stereo as tracks as supposed to mono. Everything else is 100% the same
@@PatPosse Yes exactly, but it's still not fair
Ignore that part and listen to everything else… if anything listen out of one speaker on that stereo part and you’ll get the same result. Bottom line, definitely not worth doing.
@@PatPosse I agree it's probably not worth
The guy who owned that guitar sold it not long after that and regretted doing it lol. I told him not to do it! 🤦🏻♂️
A sounded better for single notes(soloing).
B sounded better for Rhythm guitar.
Ain't that just typical.
Hahaha 😂 yup!
Exatamente a minha classica
Nice!
The new pickups definitely make it sound a lot more clear.
They sound brighter but can be a bit harsh
well, I watch the rest and you're the best at the show! 7-5-2024
😱😱. You are too kind!!!
Cool riff 🤘🏼
Haha thanks ! Some random crap I came up with on the spot 😅
Slash pick up sound clear than stock
Yes! Way clearer
"A" is night and day "better" to these ears
It been a while…I forgot which one that is but the Duncan’s sounded a bit better to me. That being said though, I don’t think they sounded so much better that it was worth the investment
Not a huge improvement after all that work time and money 🤦🏻♂️ I think I actually prefer the factory pickups more 😎
I am with you. I don’t know if I prefer the stock pickups but it’s definitely NOT worth the investment.
A for the win.
They do sound better, specially on phone speakers!
The new epiphones have better quality control than most gibsons. Uprgrading one isn’t a waste of money
Although I don’t entirely agree I can say 100% for a fact that newer Epiphones are way better!
I would have went with Gibson Burstbuckers. The slash line is cool but nothing more than a marketing gimmick. Aside from stuff Gibson has given slash from his signature line . None of his well known touring or studio strap fiddles have the "slash" pickups. If you wanna sound like slash this is not how to go about it
I totally agree… I tried to talk him out of it but sometimes they need to learn the hard way lol
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
🤘🏻🤘🏻
That was good take a look at video $4,500 chibson thanks
Will do!
700th like!
Wow! Thats wild!! Thank you guys!!! 😁🤘🏻🤘🏻
Epiphone stock sounds better
I would probably disagree but the Duncans were not better enough to justify the investment...
@PatPosse maybe it's the way you recorded. They sound fuller. I'm more of an enthusiast so I'm definitely getting an Epiphone but the Slash model with the custom pickups etc. They should sound better than the stock
Im with you. They should be a lot better… they weren’t. The Epi’s were actually pretty good in comparison. And they DO sound fuller, thicker… they just lack the definition and edge the Duncan’s had.
i liked A the best ,
I agree! It does sound better. To be honest, there’s more of a noticeable difference when listening to it recorded than live. But yeah, it sounds clearer
The epiphone pickups sound better in the mix. The slash pups are harsh on the top end to my ears. Not what I expected. Not upgrading my epi if that harsh tone is what I get.
Definitely a matter of preference. I do believe the Epi pickups sounded better on this particular mix, I did EQ for then and then used the same exact EQ for the other pickups to compare them fairly. Maybe I should have set everything at 12 o clock (or zero). The fact is, the slash sound brighter and have more top end, more attack, but less gain… you can definitely tame the treble if needed but I don’t think upgrading them it’s worth the money… I stand by what I said on the video (and over time the guitar’s owner ended up agreeing with me). Save up that money, sell your epi and try to get a Gibson. Play around, take your time and find that one that just feels and sounds right. Even if you get a studio or a faded, if you look around you’ll find a killer one! Glad to save you some money and hopefully steer you right 😁. Thanks for watching and commenting! Anything else I can help with, you can find me here or on Instagram. Always down to talk shop 🤘🏻
Definitely possible to make an epiphone sounds as good as a Gibson, but sometimes it’s also just the visuals and knowing that you are holding an actual Gibson 👀🤘🏼
I disagree. It’s not the norm, even though it CAN happen (sometimes even better) it’s not usually the case. It’s not just the aesthetic or the Gibson logo that makes a Gibson better than an Epiphone… I will say though, entry level guitars are better than ever! 🤘🏻
Meh. I love playing cheap guitars in front of young musicians because they are like oh shit I can actually have that too. If you make an Epiphone smoke those kids are going to go oh shit and go buy one cuz well they can.
There is a huge difference... I played that Epiphone Les Paul Standard for years and now I got myself a Gibson classic...it sounds so much better
👍
😁🤘🏻
slash freak has black guitar....ok
Hahaha he has 4 Gibsons this is the only black one
@@PatPosse still though....
He’s a fan but it’s not the only band he listens to…
@@PatPosse the way you introduced him though...
Anyone who can stand slash for more than a minute is a freak to me 🤣
I got to agree, this is a huge waste of money! Unless you got a Epiphone used and dirt cheap (they’re certainly available as these things are worthless the moment you buy one) you’re seriously throwing your money away by spending hundreds to “upgrade” a cheap guitar! No matter what you put on these things or how much you say it’s better than a Gipson fact is and always will be it’s a mass production slave labor Chinese guitar and nothing will change this!
Totally… I don’t know what they are smoking. New Epi’s are a LOT better but still…
@@PatPosseTotally agree. And I’ve got to admit, the new Epiphone models have definitely come a long way from what they were a few years ago and now with the Standard 50’s and 60’s you get real CTS posts rather than Chinese knockoffs, a graph tech nut rather than the cheap plastic thing, real Grover tuning machines and they’re gotten a whole lot better with the overall quality. The only downside is the pickups are still kinda crappy. Yes it’s not a Gipson and only a zealot would claim it to be “better” but for a beginner or even for someone who’s willing to change out the pickups to a good American set like what you did here can get you a lot closer to a real Les Paul than what you could just a few years ago. The new Epiphone line seems to hold their value a whole lot better now too.
@@werewolflover8636 100% they are definitely a better investment now! I'm yet to really sit here and try one out extensively but I was pleasantly surprised when I last checked one out!
Epiphones were better imo
I can see that. Definitely a more rounded and warmer tone.
Slash didnt play a 50s gibson.... he didnt play a gibson at all....
What are you talking about??
@@PatPosse When Slash got his first Gibson Les Paul, the Appetite For Destruction one; it actually was a Gibson Les Paul replica copy.
Of course, after Guns N Roses & Slash got super popular, Gibson welcomed him as a Gibson player & endorser. But the very original guitar that exploded in popularity with Slash & GNR during the band’s AFD run was not really an actual Gibson Les Paul after all.
@@PatPosse 2 add he continues to play the fake one in all of his studio sessions and plays the ones gibson gives him on stage and tour... there is a great documentary about it... I will see if I cN find the link
@@TheEternalSorrow1 Hahaha That's awesome!
