Being carried for sure exist. You really think punk would win a "cpt major event" with other insanely high level "sponsored players" with just kage? No one is just that good. Your character matters its goes hand in hand at the highest level. I think it just effects both peoples ego's the one not playing the good character and the one playing the good character. Instead of just being objective and admitting picking a good character increases your chances of winning nothing more. People just read too much into it.
