That cut of just listening to a diesel engine bumping along, water moving, crickets and a frog? I fell asleep to it, and in this interesting time, I am thankful for it.
Really lovely videos, you make. The sounds & sights in the "real time" video are like therapy. Peaceful. The narrated sections are relaxing and interesting. Thank you for your hard work.
I like the extended shot with out voice over. I can just imagine you standing there cap pulled down to keep the sun out of your eyes, meerschaum pipe in the corner of your mouth as you skillfully navigate your way down the channel, ready for any challenge. Charlie from America
Thank you for the real-time, two minute interludes. Those were wonderful. Your videos are providing welcome respite from the covid19 news. I can't do anything about that, except escape to your paradise. You're lowering my anxiety level a bunch!
Your vlogs bring back a lot of memories. Back in the seventies we had a 3 week cruise around the Midlands in my Dad's Buckingham 25 . I spent a lot of time recording an audio log on my little Phillips cassette recorder. I used to love the change in sound as we went through bridges. It must have been mind numbingly boring to listen to, but I had fun. We also took turns to make entries in the boat's log, ranging from Dad's mainly factual but occasionally drily witty account to Mum's frequently funny entries, my sisters infrequent contributions and my attempts at teenage humour. It always made for an entertaining reminder of the fun we had, even if we couldn't always see it at the time! Thanks for the fond memories.
When you do real time i get the feeling I'm sitting at the bow of the boat enjoying the beautiful country side and all the fresh air, it is truly relaxing. Thank you.!
An absolutely delightful video David. When cruising, I hope you will consider to include at least one minute of uninterrupted footage of the countryside. That would be smashing! Please include rainy days to. Cheers.
Thank you. this has by far been my favorite part of your journey. Ahhh the bliss of the countryside. I would for one love to see more raw footage of the view. Not, mind you, that I don't just love your commentary. yes, I think I will join you in a nice cup of tea. cheers!
Another great Vlog, that must have been one big circle you did. I remember passing you, my Canal hero, back in May at around the same spot you are moored at here. I can't wait to get back on the water, alas my other half hated it so she needs some work to get her around. But watching your adventures means I'm sort of keeping a toe in the water. Keep it up.
Hello David, thank you for the great views of the approach to, and the departure from Wigrams Turn and Bridge 17. It brought back very pleasant memories of my visit to the area last year and my two-night-stay at Wigrams Guesthouse. Happy cruising! Mike
I know that this is an older video, but I wanted to note that my mom's maiden name was Calcutt. I don't think that they're related, because the Calcutt Marina was named after a place, but I thought that it would be fun to do a narrowboat holiday out of there this year. Thanks for the video! Looks like a beautiful area!
Wow! Compare and contrast that mooring at the end with the mooring in the center of Manchester. Also, what a peaceful journey you shared with us with those unedited minutes of bliss. Sincere thanks. Simply lovely.
I don't know if you ever peep inside the cabin while you are going along or working the locks, but if you did you would see us all imagining ourselves grouped around your cozy stove looking, out the window as we go along. We all try to disappear when you stop. For sure that's how I picture myself when watching the vlog, its just like having our own window on your boat, thank you.
Enjoying these vlogs, have been working my way through then in sequence. You have a great British sense of humour. Wonderful stuff keep up the good work.
Wonderful journey - superb film especially the "real time" bit. Thank you for all the information you gave during the film. Linking it to my online map, it's great to see exactly where you are - just past New Bridge No.103
It looks to be so serene just slowly cruising down the canal. There's nothing quite like that here in the U.S. For me, the closest thing is taking the RV / caravan to campgrounds and off the beaten path out in the mountains, forests, national parks, etc. But, a big difference, the driving part can be monotonous, boring, hectic, tiresome, etc., etc. but just about never enjoyable. With the narrowboat, it looks like the process of getting to the destination is every bit as enjoyable as the destination itself... in fact maybe even more so.
Remember that these are edited for our maximum viewing pleasure. There are many roads in the US that have beautiful stretches. I'm always amazed when I hear people say that they find, for example, the interstate through the Everglades, to be a boring drive. It's gorgeous. You can see for miles, there are waterways and reflections alongside - the only problem is that you can't slow down to take it all in.
Thank you SO much for posting this. Just beautiful! Your mention of the kettle at the end reminds me- I've never understood how people manage to cook in those tiny galley kitchens. Any chance of an episode on this?
We used to keep our shared narrowboat at Stockton Top Marina, so we know this part of the system very well. Happy memories, and thank you for reminding us of past times.
Seeing those 2-minute unedited segments, it is so peaceful that at times I would think one could drift off to sleep at the helm. Well, that is until you fell over into the canal or slammed into another narrowboat. Lol
Does one shout "Ahoy!" to get the attention of a boat's skipper the way one does at sea? And approaching on land to a moored boat: "Hello the boat?" (My god, those real-time segments were hypnotic.)
Eagle eyed spot on this video from me... Tugboat Ruislip... 3m20s in ...I had the pleasure of operating her a few times and also having my Conver work boat rescued and towed by her on the Lea Navigation back around 2002-2003.. she was moored between Old Ford Locks (opposite the old Big Breakfast House and up as far as Tottenham in that time and belonged to British Waterways who were partners assisting our charity work. Glad she still exists.
Hi, I've recently discovered your channel and have been working my way through in order. I must congratulate you on such wonderful film work, it's stunning and very enjoyable. I'm not going to jump to the latest posts but am intrigued to know if you are still living aboard. You are very lucky to be living such a lovely life and I am very envious. Keep up the great work and I'll keep enjoying your adventure. All the best
Yes the engine and lapping water. 10 min. Or so would be so relaxing. Lead in to your nap. At the end whisper good night. I would watch it before bed , after my cinnamon and honey. I think it would be a hit ! What do you say other viewers ?
I don't understand what you're asking? If you want videos of canal scenery only, then see my later "not a vlog" series, which are encapsulated in this playlist: th-cam.com/video/-S2kKQaDnV8/w-d-xo.html
Nice to see some Bull Rushes growing near the derelict house @ 7.00 I don't know about the canals but their very rare on the Norfolk Broads, where they were once very common apparently, I only ever saw a handful on the wonderful boating holidays there. The real time boating clips are a nice addition to your Vlog. B-)
I love your Videos. I am a strong believer in solving many potential problems through technology. So here are my thoughts: Have you ever thought about installing a little waterproof camera on the front end of the boat and a monitor on the back? So you can see what is going on in front of the boat when you are turning around corners. You can also record the signal of the camera for using it for the VLOG as well.
Here's a crazy idea, bound to make your life more complicated while adding only a questionable amount of value to it: perhaps consider acquiring a drone. This would allow you to effectively "see around corners" for oncoming boats, and also would be good for when you have to back out into a waterway as I've seen you do recently in a vlog. A drone might also provide additional, beautiful footage of you, traveling through the countryside by canal. I have seen footage taken with drones that somehow "tether" electronically to their base (located in a moving vehicle) so they can be flown hands-free, leaving you free to steer. Hope that is worth considering! Thank you again for the great videos!
;) That's awesome though! I mean the videos are great and I love watching them, but you're obviously having fun with it all too. Very envious ;) I wonder how many people these videos have converted to cruising ;) Have a good day sir!
A wonderful journey and a fabulous destination at the end. Lovely way to start my Sunday morning, watching your vlog while sipping on my favourite Darjeeling cuppa. Cheers!
Terrific video. Mooring spot noted. And when our new boat finally sets sail would love to meet up for Gin & Tonics. Bitter aside, Linda and my most favourite of drinks. I better start getting the sloe gin ready. And the blackberry. Both flavoured with the the last of the 2016 autumn fruit picking extravaganza. And the plumbs and custard (though sadly I only uncorked a bottle just over a week ago and it disappeared from the cupboard on the first day when friends came round for a visit. They strongly deny it but I've had to install a guard tower, trip wires, cctv, landmines, and Arthur Cyril Sedgwick Croke (our Jack Russell) just in case the gin decides to go all Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough and Charles Bronson and do a runner from Stalag Luft III. However, now that you've donned those very sinister looking Mr Smith from The Matrix style shades I'm having my doubts..... 🇮🇪🐸 Alan
You mentioned the constant attention needed to steer the boat. I'm thinking that our view of the bucolic fields, in the 2-minute segments, was possibly better than your own, because we viewers could just gaze at the countryside while you took care of the steering. :-) I really like those bits.
Hello sorry I confused you. I meant to say some sustained shots down the length of the boat in a manner like the ones you did in this video. You know if you put out a video of just cursing with a fixed camera I would watch. That would have the same esthetic value to me as something like a video of a fireplace or of a wildlife park. Thanks for your fast response too.
Ah, understood. Well as you know I'm moored up for winter at the moment but will be going out on another Big Cruise at the end of March, probably through to end of June. I will try to get all kinds of shots as I go! Cheers
Glorious views! Have you thought about putting the camera at the front of the boat for one of those un-edited segments? I imagine that would be a very peaceful ride.
The rusty shed at 7:09 reminds me I've been quite lax with my photographic hobby of getting shots of distinctively decrepit sheds: currently around 170 pics on Flickr.
I have cruised this section before...took a boat from Grand Union to Warwick and back with my family for a lovely bank holiday stop over at Warwick. We did not fancy going further into that long flight of locks. Moored up for weekend opposite Kate Boats in Warwick.
getting quite used to your chimney bowl. It makes your narrow boat look kind of unique, and i think that perhaps you actually deliberately lost that boring new metal cowl for that very reason!. Thanks for sharing your vlogs, am enjoying them immensely
I've just recently found your channel and am watching from the beginning, and am addicted! We have nothing like this where I live. Could you possibly install a wireless camera made for a car? Put the camera on the bow to help you with blind turns? I guess that takes away from the nostalgia though...
I'm almost halfway through your great collection of vlogs! feel kind of like you, trying to get to the other side of a collection of locks! Enjoyable along the way but will be glad to be up to date and waiting for the new and fresh update! Just a note or idea on your," not able to see around the corners". Would it not help to get a simple camera and small screen to be able to see whats happening up ahead from the bow while still being at the stern! Kind of what these modern cars use these days to help reversing.
Hi. Many people have suggested this ;-) I don't know anyone who has one and I think I'd be better off looking where I'm going than squinting at a screen. Also, the camera and screen would likely get nicked. But cheers anyway! Just take it slow and all's well.
It looks so tranquil when you're out in the rolling countryside. Do you ever fight to stay awake at the tiller? I would have to drink copious amounts of caffeine to combat the urge to nod off. I don't mean that in a bad way. Not that it seem boring, only that it seems so peaceful and relaxing, I would fear drifting off.
It's never been a problem. Yes it's tranquil but you're always aware that if you stop concentrating for a second the boat's going to point at the bank and you'll thump into something. Plenty of other boats coming along too to keep an eye out for and lots of twists and turns. It's actually quite mentally taxing!!
Really enjoy your vlogs. I am unable to travel so it is great to see some sights with you. What is the fastest speed you can go with your boat. And what is the longest distance travelled in a day? Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. There is a 4mph speed limit on the canal but really, if you're going that fast you're missing the point of narrowboating! I tend to travel at a much more serene 2.5mph. No idea what the furthest I've been in a day is but I tend only to chug along for 3-4 hours a day unless I really need to get somewhere, so I probably go about 10 miles. If there are locks in the way, that distance is reduced because it takes 10-20 minutes to go through a lock depending on how it's set, whether I get any help, whether it's narrow or wide etc.
You could do a backwards Reverse Camera type idea? Have a small fisheye camera in the front of the boat, with a small screen in the back? Might help with those tricky ones.
Another well edited vlog, thank you yet again, so upset to see on the news about a narrow-bout sinking in the lock killing its owner, do you know what happened as the news only told us the basics?
They did state on the news that the boat may have filled up from water that was spilling out of the lock gate on to the boat? my heart go out to the relatives. and i am sure deaths on narrow-boats are not common.
Not quite. As I understand it they went into the lock, going up. Rear gates were shut., front paddles then opened. Water came in and the flow pushed the boat backwards (as it always does). Because lock gates don't actually always shut 100% until there's enough pressure on them, there was a slight gap between them which enabled the boat's rudder to slip between it. Then the water had risen enough to hold the gates firmly on the rudder which prevented the back of the boat rising, so it took water on front the back as the level went up. The chap pulled his mum and pet dog off then went back for a large bag of cash which they had because they were en route to buy another boat (!) but somehow got trapped amongst the floating debris (or maybe chilled by the cold??) and died.
People take the locks in their stride in vlogs, however it is obvious that they can be very dangerous, when i buy my boat, i will be very alert to using locks correctly, and certainly check how to use the locks properly and carefully. Thank you for the information and happy boating, maybe you could do a guide to using locks correctly, and warnings to watch out for?
Don't know if it was suggested already.. but what about a security web cam installed on the prow that you can monitor from your smartphone using your wifi to connect? Most also have IR so you would be able to see in tunnels.
I can feel myself relaxing as the lovely scenery passes by. Thank you for those long stretches of unedited cruising!
Glad you enjoy them, cheers
I like the extended shot with out voice over. I can just imagine you standing there cap pulled down to keep the sun out of your eyes, meerschaum pipe in the corner of your mouth as you skillfully navigate your way down the channel, ready for any challenge.
Charlie from America
That's *exactly* how I navigate, how did you know?! ;-)
I have a good imagination, plus a lot of reading of sea stories!
Charlie from America
Great real-time boating plus a teaser and a nice cup of tea to finish things off -- I admire your craft (in both senses of the word ;-)
A fine way for me to relax,as always your videos are superb, thanks! )))
Cheers Kieran
Thank you for the real-time, two minute interludes. Those were wonderful. Your videos are providing welcome respite from the covid19 news. I can't do anything about that, except escape to your paradise. You're lowering my anxiety level a bunch!
It amazes me how much countryside there still is on that small island! 👏🏻👍🏻✌🏻🇦🇺😃
Loads!!
Love your videos. The scenery is beautiful. Your handling of the boat has much improved since the beginning. Thanks
I don't notice of course but it's interesting that you say that. I suppose it ought to have improved really!! Cheers
Your vlogs bring back a lot of memories.
Back in the seventies we had a 3 week cruise around the Midlands in my Dad's Buckingham 25 . I spent a lot of time recording an audio log on my little Phillips cassette recorder. Thanks for the fond memories.
Sounds like great fun :-)
When you do real time i get the feeling I'm sitting at the bow of the boat enjoying the beautiful country side and all the fresh air, it is truly relaxing. Thank you.!
As a non-Brit, I've only heard about the English country side in books. This is the first time I get to see it in a video. Very nice.
heavenly views..thank you so much for sharing your world!
Thank you for watching!
Awesome videos. Something I will probably never get to see from the US. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
:-)
Very cool to hear all the sounds as you heard them, especially the birds and the sound of water.
An absolutely delightful video David. When cruising, I hope you will consider to include at least one minute of uninterrupted footage of the countryside. That would be smashing! Please include rainy days to. Cheers.
No rainy footage because they camcorder will get wet. Later videos include some uninterrupted footage.
Awesome vid as usual! Please keep them coming! I am still vicariously living my canal life here from the US via your videos. :)
Cheers Daman!
I tend to rewind that 4.5 minutes of cruising a few times. Your a lucky guy, one day I'll be there and can't wait.
love the views, very scenic. I love the countryside :)
Glorious, isn't it?
+CruisingTheCut indeed it is :)
Best vlog ever, so relaxing
Enjoyable video as usual, thank you.
Thank you. this has by far been my favorite part of your journey. Ahhh the bliss of the countryside. I would for one love to see more raw footage of the view. Not, mind you, that I don't just love your commentary. yes, I think I will join you in a nice cup of tea. cheers!
Tea is good! Cheers
Watched a few vids and added a couple of cents to the beer money, haha! Looks like I nice lifestyle. I never knew this existed till today! I like it!
Thank you (for watching and for the beer money!!)
Arrgh... the suspense... now all we need is the Eastenders closing theme.
Keep it up.
Another great video
Still love the vlogs. Would love to see more of what it's like inside the boat living day-to-day on board whilst cruising. :)
Hmm, not sure what you mean. The boat's the same inside whether cruising or stationary!
I think he means something as a "day in the life" type of Vlog.
Thanks for another great video. I really enjoyed it.
Wishing you well on your journey.
Thank you for the extended great views.
Hello David, thank you for the great views of the approach to, and the departure from Wigrams Turn and Bridge 17. It brought back very pleasant memories of my visit to the area last year and my two-night-stay at Wigrams Guesthouse. Happy cruising! Mike
Glad to be of service :-)
That was a nice boat with some things on the topside. Reminds me of a yard sale I saw yesterday.
That extended shot of the countryside was rather relaxing...it must be therapeutic.
Hope so!
Great videos very soothing.
Wow! Compare and contrast that mooring at the end with the mooring in the center of Manchester. Also, what a peaceful journey you shared with us with those unedited minutes of bliss. Sincere thanks. Simply lovely.
Another nice vlog entry. The boat I have a share in is based at Wigrams Turn. Only 4 more weeks until we're out on her again :)
Counting down the hours!
Lucky with the weather!
Wasn't it glorious?! That was back in mid-May.
Linking it to my online map, it's great to see exactly where you are - just past New Bridge No.103
Lovely vídeo this one! GRACIAS.
I love the view on my little mooring, fields on one side and fields and a few lovely hills on the other. Oh and cows! Very many cows :)
Haha, then you will enjoy a shot in my next video which includes a field of cows! Do they ever come and eat your ropes?
+CruisingTheCut Moooooo! and no they're the other side of the cut :D
Brilliant! A stunning video.
So serene. Oh, and don't change the closing music.
:-)
It looks to be so serene just slowly cruising down the canal. There's nothing quite like that here in the U.S. For me, the closest thing is taking the RV / caravan to campgrounds and off the beaten path out in the mountains, forests, national parks, etc. But, a big difference, the driving part can be monotonous, boring, hectic, tiresome, etc., etc. but just about never enjoyable. With the narrowboat, it looks like the process of getting to the destination is every bit as enjoyable as the destination itself... in fact maybe even more so.
Yes, absolutely, it’s the journey!
I get some of the same feeling when riding Amtrak cross-country.
Remember that these are edited for our maximum viewing pleasure. There are many roads in the US that have beautiful stretches. I'm always amazed when I hear people say that they find, for example, the interstate through the Everglades, to be a boring drive. It's gorgeous. Thank you SO much for posting this. Just beautiful!
Your mention of the kettle at the end reminds me- I've never understood how people manage to cook in those tiny galley kitchens. Any chance of an episode on this?
As my "cooking" consists solely of heating things up in the oven or microwave, I doubt I'd answer your question so probably not!
Really liked the real time videos
I like editing. Commentary. But the scenery is gorgeous
We used to keep our shared narrowboat at Stockton Top Marina, so we know this part of the system very well. Happy memories, and thank you for reminding us of past times.
:-)
The roar of the greasepaint.
The smell of the crowd.
Seeing those 2-minute unedited segments, it is so peaceful that at times I would think one could drift off to sleep at the helm. Well, that is until you fell over into the canal or slammed into another narrowboat. Lol
You don't drift off, it's surprising how much you concentrate to keep the boat on course!
It's amazing! I enjoy watching the country side go by.
The long shots were balm for the eyes and soul. I'm in Western Australia and we don't get a lot of that sort of greenness and wateriness.
Does one shout "Ahoy!" to get the attention of a boat's skipper the way one does at sea? And approaching on land to a moored boat: "Hello the boat?" (My god, those real-time segments were hypnotic.)
Just hello really!
Love your videos
Thank you!
I could listen to to rumble of that engine and the whop whop of the prop all day...
It's very pleasant, isn't it?!
well that was relaxing
Good
So glad you didn’t put daft background music on the real-time cruising sections.
thanks for the unedited video... very nice!
great show as always , hey your look at the end , dark glasses and tee shirt , that look is you !
Haha, such a shame it's often not sunny enough for the shades :-)
+CruisingTheCut not sucking up , but your narrow boat show the best one going . so please keep making them . ttyl.
Blatant sucking up. Luckily, I'm shallow and like it. I shall keep on until I get bored or until the (occasional) moaners send me over the edge.
That is very eagle-eyed indeed. Good info too, cheers

I am still aboard!
Real time great . Very therapeutic , just like being on board .
Good update thanks for sharing
i enjoy following you on my Google maps as it is interesting to see where you are as well as see the satellite version of the cannel
Same!
Yes the engine and lapping water. 10 min. Or so would be so relaxing. Lead in to your nap. At the end whisper good night. I would watch it before bed , after my cinnamon and honey. I think it would be a hit ! What do you say other viewers ?

The last vista is so idyllic, so tempting.... But then reality descends.

Yes I have but it costs money which I'm a bit short on!
Here's a crazy idea, bound to make your life more complicated while adding only a questionable amount of value to it: perhaps consider acquiring a drone. I have since aqcuired a drone. It wouldn't work for seeing ahead, see cruisingthecut.co.uk/f-a-q/
Glad to see you're still cruising sir =D Your life is an adventure for sure!
All the best, and thanks for the great vids.
Just between you and me this was shot mid-May, I still haven't caught up in video with where I am in life!
;) That's awesome though! I mean the videos are great and I love watching them, but you're obviously having fun with it all too. Very envious ;) I wonder how many people these videos have converted to cruising ;) Have a good day sir!
People keep commenting that they're going to have a holiday / buy a boat so I think it's doing something!!
That's amazing! You trend-setter you! ;)
Such awesome power!
A wonderful journey and a fabulous destination at the end. Lovely way to start my Sunday morning, watching your vlog while sipping on my favourite Darjeeling cuppa. Cheers!
How pretty, how green and how quiet. Your motor seems to be just humming along😊
Thanks for another entertaining episode, David 😃👍👏👏
Positively meditative! Lovely!
How peaceful and civilized.
Terrific video. Mooring spot noted.

Ha! With a comment like that, I think it's entirely clear who's been sipping the gin!!
You mentioned the constant attention needed to steer the boat. I'm thinking that our view of the bucolic fields, in the 2-minute segments, was possibly better than your own, because we viewers could just gaze at the countryside while you took care of the steering. :-) I really like those bits.
:-)
Hi David, I hope you are doing well. I’m Enjoying your past travels immensely. Take care!
Cheers Jeff!
Well done with the scenery shots it does let us cruse vicariously through you. How about some shot down your great boat too. Thanks
Thanks. I genuinely don't understand though; lots of the shots in my cruising videos are pointing down the boat...?
Hello sorry I confused you. I meant to say some sustained shots down the length of the boat in a manner like the ones you did in this video. You know if you put out a video of just cursing with a fixed camera I would watch. That would have the same esthetic value to me as something like a video of a fireplace or of a wildlife park. Subscribed last week and at this milestone. Thanks' for sharing your videos really top class!
Cheers Terry!
Beautiful day and area.
Glorious views! Have you thought about putting the camera at the front of the boat for one of those un-edited segments? I imagine that would be a very peaceful ride.
Yes but I don't have a secure way to mount it and I'm not having it fall in the canal!
lovely scenery
The rusty shed at 7:09 reminds me I've been quite lax with my photographic hobby of getting shots of distinctively decrepit sheds: currently around 170 pics on Flickr.
I have cruised this section before...took a boat from Grand Union to Warwick and back with my family for a lovely bank holiday stop over at Warwick. We did not fancy going further into that long flight of locks. Moored up for weekend opposite Kate Boats in Warwick.
Hatton Flight if I remember.... you went through them I see....
That's the one!
Great episode...Thanks
getting quite used to your chimney bowl.
Very few boats have them but I know of a few.
I see you still have your soccer ball cereal bowl taped to the smoke stack. :-)
Oh, that stays with me for a while as I didn't pass any more chandleries!
"The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd"
Lovely.. heading that way next week 😉 from Warick..
7:11 Waterfront property with gorgeous views and an open plan living space, slight renovation needed... :-)
Y'all need a drone for looking round those corners! Great vids,,,, binging them all.
Ha! No, it would be too tricky to maintain control of the boat whilst simultaneously piloting a drone. Cheers!
I know no more than what's been reported in the papers. Yes, awful story.
I already did a video about how I do locks.
Don't know if it was suggested already.. but what about a security web cam installed on the prow that you can monitor from your smartphone using your wifi to connect? Most also have IR so you would be able to see in tunnels.
Nice silent bits, but was that your boat gently Humming along or my #Tinnitus??
And what was that #Ostrich doing alongside the sheep? ;-)
