Pretty sure Oedipus is a D&D player character:
    - Beats random travelers to death over some insults
    - Turns out one of them is an important main quest NPC
    - DM pulls out a riddle to keep Oedipus busy while figuring out what to do next
    - Player figures out a loophole; Exploits it to stall to the end of the session then Googles the answer
    - Actually succeeds, becomes the king
    - Uses his influence to persuade the local Divination Wizard to waste all his spell slots on revealing the main plot
    - DM gives up, blurts out "You're a motherfucker"
    - This accidentally resolves the entire storyline in one perfect move, players ask if that was on purpose
    - "Oh uh yeah, of course"
    - Players treat it as the best campaign ever
    - Thread ends up on forums for the next 2000 years

You laugh but my best campaign was when I dropped the BBEG I had planned and went with an NPC that the players basically invented out of whole cloth. I did because they were way more invested in their imagery bad guy than in my imagery bad guy (I admit I tried waving the original under their noses a few times but they all loudly declared he must be a decoy).

I'm still not convinced The Oracle isn't actually just an introverted witch that placed curses upon people for talking to her.
"Oracle, tell me how to make the greatest sandwich of all time."
"You wanna talk about sandwiches? Let's talk about sandwiches and how you're gonna *choke to DEATH on a SANDWICH!* "

Oracle: You're going to marry your mother
    Oedipus: What? That's crazy.
*proceeds to marry a woman roughly the age his mother would be*
Jocasta: *Turns out to be his mother*
    Oedipus: *Surprised Pikachu face*

I recently started rewatching campaign 1 of Critical Role. I full on squeed when I someone in the chat named Dailydael asked what was going on, and that they would have to look into this D&D thing. Wonder if they ever got into it?
Just thought I'd share something I found awesome.

My favourite subversion of the Sphinx story is a one-off scene in Terry Pratchett's Pyramid, where not only does the protagonist get the Sphinx to give him the riddle's answer, he then goes onto to deconstruct the absurdity of the whole thing and how it's not even internally consistent in its metaphor.

I particularly loved the production and editing on this. Play all the parts, sister! It's all you. Of course, now I have to go watch the parody video, Oh For Tuna (MIsheard Lyrics), yet another time.

This is one of my favourite stories off Greek Myth, in fact I studied Oedipus Rex as one of my three plays in Classical Civilisations A-Level and it is such a brilliant story. Plus it's followed by the tale of Antigone and it has so many fantastic characters and lessons within it.
Thank you for telling this one, I was wondering about your take on this particular story.
