I salvit, I use glycerin to make the needles more flexible. These were some old needles that had become very dry and brittle. Not wanting to waste them, I decided to give them the glycerin treatment so they were usable again. Glycerin also darkens the needles and acts a bit as a preservative.
I use glycerin also I have a throw away foil pan that is just long enough for my long leaf needles. Glycerin leaves such a nice gleam to the needles. Love all your videos, you talk slow and plain, kudos to you,
Hello, please can you help me with the glycerin amounts, I don t know if it is mixed with water o just glycerin? for how long you keep the needles in this liquid? Greetings from Chile
For anyone wishing to learn more about coiling with pine needles, I suggest joining the Facebook group, The Art of Coiling Pine Needle Baskets. Unfortunately, I do not often see the comments left on these videos until long after they have been posted. You will get feedback much quicker by joining this group. Thanks....and happy coiling.
Carol, could you please create and post a video on wrapping rows? I am just not sure the best way to accomplish this... Thanx! BTW, after watching your video on the faggoting stick, I did it for the first time in a special basket I am making using my great grandmother from Denmark's coat button. I did it fine. I was not able to to wrap the rows because I just don't seem to be doing it right. ~ Pam J. Oregon
Pam, just wrap the thread or sinew around the coil between each stitch. i.e. take a stitch as normal....then simply wrap the thread around the loose coil until you get to the place where you would take the next stitch and then make that stitch. keep repeating until you've wrapped as much as you want to wrap. if you look at all my other videos, I believe there is one video somewhere that i wrap a small portion. i'm not absolutely sure of that, but i think theres a segment somewhere.
Well, I have tried it and it darkens the colors to a nice deep reddish tint plus makes them more supple so you don't have to soak them for coiling. I love using the glycerine.

How much glycerin to water do you use to make a desirable solution for making pine needles more flexible?

Thank you!!
Ive just started to research pine needle basketry, can you tell me why you are using glycerin please. Thanx
+l salvit Yes, what is the benefit of using glycerin. Does this clean them, sterilize them, give them a shine , or help keep them moist?
+l salvit ...I would think that the glycerin is not only natural but also has moisturizing affects..as well as cleaning properties
