    Forgive me or not .....
I just purchased a 1996, one owner, 9,833 original mile Dyna Super Glide Convertible that is pristine and unmolested but has a few add ons like axle cap chrome covers front and rear plus chrome inserts on the brake calipers. Original paint, saddle bags, windshield, air cleaner, rims, buckhorns etc. Rare and unmolested.
I'm proud to have it, not cocky about it and I'm not accusing anyone in this video of being cocky either. These older machines are impressive. I'm a former Marine and attention to detail was integral as an Anti- Tank Assaultman. I was very aware of minor details of every known tank and armored vehicle in use at that time as well as vintage machines probable use. There was no room for errors mistakenly obliterating the wrong vehicle.
I'm disappointed someone replaced the original license plate bracket on this Fatboy with that all chrome lay down bracket. Also noticeable is the rear turn signal lenses, they're red but originally amber.

That bike is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! I own a 2002 Fat Boy. I ABSOLUTELY love that bike. I wanted a Harley since I was 6 years old. When I saw Terminator 2, I wanted a Fat Boy. In 2017 I finally made my dream come true. I had my bike custom painted to make it more mine , but kept the original look of the Fat Boy , with solid wheels, original style looking handlebars, a 2 up seat ( but a more sleeker style ) . I put LED lights on her and an Arlen Ness Monster Sucker, because the previous owner had a Kuryakyn and I did not like it. I have Vance&Hines big shots , to give it that sound like it should have lol. If you'd like to see it, you can take a look at my page. ...I visited the museum a couple of years ago and I was in AWE!! What a GREAT looking motorcycle!!! I remember in 1991 that Lake Shore Harley Davidson in Waukegan, IL had (2) of these 1990 FATBOYS left over for sale. The "leaning" license plate bracket on your museum model is not original equipment, it was manufactured by CCI and looked much better than the HD original "stand up straight" license plate bracket, also this bike looked very cool when the pillion pad was removed from the rear of the saddle for riding solo. 🇺🇸 J.R. My Comment #2 continued from #1 :
I noticed other people's EVO engines often had rusty head bolts. This is because the bolt heads were recessed down underflush into a large counterbore. This counterbore fills up with water and corrodes the head and the bolts. I cured this by drilling a 1/8" drain hole in the bottom edge of the counterbore & out into the gap between the fins, so to be at the lowest point when the bike is on its side stand. It worked like a dream.
The engine builder got the now mainly smooth castings back. He then vapour blasted them (round glass beads in a high pressure water jet). This process disguises all the fettling scratch marks and closes over (peans) any casting pores, giving a beautiful uniform colour and finish, resistant to corrosion. The castings now looked more like a sophisticated lost wax investment casting than the former crude sand castings. The engine builder said we had created the prettiest EVO engine he had ever seen.
It won Best Bike (members choice) at a rally back in 1992 when nearly brand new, because everyone loved the new Fatboy. Its visual impact was that great back then.
A police motorcyclist pulled me over just to look at it and a large US styled Diner (Calendars) in Garston near Watford allowed me to ride it in for the day to attract customers. Elf and Safety would never allow that these days.
At a Fenlanders HOG rally circa 2015, I chucked it into the usual rally bike show. By then many new HOG members had no idea what the bike was or its rarety, just thinking it another clean silver coloured Fatboy but of no custom significance. However, unknown to me, one gentleman took a major interest in it and all the subtle changes I'd made to make it better but still look original. That evening it suddenly dawned who this mystery gentleman was, an HD UK supremo and knew exactly what my bike was all about. He surprisingly awarded it Best Antique - hmm, its not that old but definitely worthy of a cup.
Come June 2016 the lovely engine went decidedly pear shaped. One of the industry standard parts HD use, a cam follower's (valve lifter) roller bearing decided to commit suicide and deposit hardened steel needle rollers all through the engine's internals 😢 I thought the initial warning noises were a broken valve spring, but no, far worse. Upon an initial strip down at Full Bore custom motorcycles in Watford, we also discovered one of the shrink fit main cam or crankshaft bearing races was slowly walking itself out of the crankcase by about 1/4", so yet another very major catastrophe was imminent. The custom bike builder was not an engine builder, not in the engineering sense which my engine now urgently required. So off it went to the same engine builder from 1996 and we agreed on ALL new internal parts, to include an S&S flywheel crankshaft assembly which cured the creeping bearing race. As a skim of the piston bores would also be required, we decided on a mild stroking to raise the capacity to 14xx cc at no real price increase. As Fatboys only use the rather weedy Sportster battery, starting it when cold was never good. It was decided to add some semi-automatic decompressors next to the sparkplugs. Anyway, nearly six years later and my engine is still with him awaiting work to be done 🤷.
Baring the engine, this Fatboy must rank as one of the best examples in the World which is (was) used. Its been on many International HOG rallies in Europe and in 1993 it and my mate's Electroglide were both shipped to Baltimore USA so we could attend the HD 90th anniversary celebration for three weeks, also touring the some of the US eastern states and Canada, so about 4000+ miles. My honeymoon with my ex on her pink Sportster was a tour of rainy Ireland, wet wet wet. Currently I think its done about 68k miles but should have been way more. I've had the lovely looking but not that comfortable main seat restuffed twice now !
I've done many things to this bike and designed many improved parts. To cover them all I have my own Drawing number and Tool number register system and each part has its own engineering drawing, either pen & paper or 3D CAD. I have my own designs for elegant double articulating highway pegs and an oil cooler, but a factory move made getting these quite complicated parts difficult to get made, so alas they are still just dreams. Where once workers were always willing to do homers for a tin of sweets or a girly calendar, now a small engineering company would want hundreds for these one-offs.
My custom one-off bike lift originally made by a farm machinery engineer mate even has titanium trolley wheels (as an update) made on a whim by a another mate at work, just because he could. How posh is that 😄
So a bike more customised than most home done custom bikes, trying its hardest to look totally stock. I'm reasonably sure no other proper custom bike shop nor HD themselves could match the engineering and processes this example has had done to it.
All removed original parts are neatly boxed and labelled as I regard it as a future museum piece.

My Comment here is really the story of my bike up to Feb 2022. TH-cam have a 10,000 character limit, so is spread over two individual comment entries. This is Comment #1 :
I've got an original silver 1990 Fatboy (and an old HOG mate once had a very rare 1989 version). I got mine with only 289 miles on the clock back in Feb 1991, because its first owner said the quality wasn't as good as Honda, so sold it to buy another Honda, so his loss, my gain. Admittedly, that silver frame paint/power coating was rubbish, so thin it was translucent, offering little protection to the steel.
I first became aware of this model at the big UK annual International Motorcycle Show (at Earls Court) in 1988. The HD stand was next to the new Norton JPS Wankels which looked really cool. Harleys in the UK back then were considered a bit of a joke, being regarded as two wheeled tractors. I was actually hankering for a silver Laverda Jota, but then this huge silver solid wheel vision loomed before me as I turned away from viewing the Norton; I was indeed instantly smitten.
Even though I bought mine here in the UK from an official HD dealer (the now defunct Wheels International in Hockliffe), it was actually a grey import from Canada to another defunct HD dealer Windy Corner in Barwell. As so, it had to have the additional wire to each orange indicator cut, so to disable the marker lights function not allowed in the UK. As per the review bike, it also had the massive US spec rear belt cog, which looks so impressive but at our UK higher speed limit of 70mph (US 55mph back then), my eyesight literally blurred and my feet kept vibrating off the footboards. So the final drive setup had to be changed for the smaller International kit, which allows a more relaxed high speed cruise.
Anyway, as I'm an aerospace mechanical engineer then working for Lucas Aerospace (Hemel Hempstead) as it was back then, in a huge factory which still made most of its own stuff in-house (those were the days), I duly set about re-engineering most of it to aerospace finish standards, reusing ALL original parts possible. So all fasteners had their poor commercial zinc plating stripped, burrs removed and smoothed, then replated them using more function appropriate aerospace spec passivated zinc, cadmium, tin, silver, dull nickel or chrome like electroless nickel. Our Plating Shop didn't do chrome unfortunately, but did nearly everything else, including gold (for electrical contacts).
The front mudguard (fender) started to rust around the rivets, so that was completely disassembled down to its component parts and stripped to bare metal, with new semi-tubular rivets sourced from a local manufacturer and the rusting front edge reinforcement piece duplicated in better and thicker steel from a local classic Jaguar and AC Cobra restoration company, being shaped on an English Wheel. All mudguard parts were then dull nickel plated overnight at work giving a plating thickness of about .009" so should never go rusty again. Said original reinforcement piece was just spot welded in place by HD with no edge sealing, just spray painted, so water easily got in by capillary action and caused rust. Ditto the riveted side strengtheners. That's very poor build quality and method. My new reinforcement piece was cemented in using industrial strength epoxy over its whole mating surface, so completely sealing out any water ingress. Similar was done to the rear mudguard and oil tank, with any welds improved by our certificated welder using the brilliant TIG equipment, then ground back and blended to give smooth radii. The silver painting was given to a proper custom painter (Matt the Painter) who found that a Fiat car silver was an exact match. Any black paint was done by the Work's paint shop using aerospace epoxy two-pack.
The rear swingarm was also rewelded and smoothed, then X-rayed to ensure full weld penetration for safety. That was then electoplated, chromate acid etch paint primed, then powder coated a close colour match to HD's original.
The lacquer kept peeling off the polished aluminium inner primary housing, with my attempts to repair using Eastwood's metal lacquer failing after one riding season. Basically, lacquer won't adhere to bare polished aluminium, whatever the manufacturer claims. So something more drastic was called for. The housing was duly removed, stripped and the outside fettled of any casting witness marks, then polished smooth. The inside had metal fettled away to remove some serious looking stress raisers (sharp internal and external corners creating weak points). So less metal but more appropriately contoured makes it stronger 🤔. To prevent future corrosion of the aluminium, the housing was sulphuric acid anodised which turns it dark grey. To regain the shiny polished aluminium look, its outside was bright silver powder coated with a gloss clear coat. Similar was done to the oil pump.
I created my own design of air filter backplate (with Helicoils) to allow the then very trendy S&S teardrop cover to be fitted to the original but modified CV carb (with Dynojet and Head Quarters parts, plus my own design of accelerator pump volume restrictor) with a K&N filter element.
I created my own design of rev counter mounting to fit on the handle bars between it and the then new all stainless steel quick release screen. Harley said it couldn't be done, but was easy enough using CAD. Stainless steel sheet was then profile cut to shape using a CNC electro spark wire eroder machine. This mounting bracket mated to a same period 2nd hand HD FXR rev counter, so the clock face matched the speedo, giving an original equipment look.
The exhaust down pipes chrome was poor over the welds with weld spatter still in evidence, so they needed to be rechromed. Problem, chrome shops won't entertain used exhausts full of carbon. So I cut each exhaust down pipe into bits to allow the Work's shot blaster in the Heat Treatment Department to access all the internal areas. Then using my pet certificated welder it was all welded back together using the small grinding slot alignment marks I had provided. They were then weld smoothed and polished, followed by the start of the chrome plating process, so in our Work's Plating Shop they were copper plated, nickel plated, then taken to a now defunct hard chrome plating shop in the next small town of Kings Langley. The exhaust shields which are on full view were properly bright triple chrome plated by the well known platers London Chroming.
The foot boards are badly made by HD with their undersides very prone to rust. They were chrome striped, then the curved attachment brackets underneath continuous welded to prevent water ingress between the mating parts. All then fettled and polished top and bottom ready for the hard chrome treatment again. Then it occurred to me the edges get ground off riding around corners. I had an idea to prevent this by adding 1/4" dia stainless steel bars as sacrificial skids, bent to match the curve of the footboards, with the bar welded to its own stainless strip to bolt to the curved sides of the footboards. Some bar cut-offs were sourced from the Work's Materials Store which had the painted end colour identification coding missing. We thought it was stainless steel, but no. It was indeed stainless, but actually a very high grade jet engine nickel alloy which even at red heat, still took a two foot long bar to even slightly bend it. God that stuff was strong. With the help of a bloke in-house using an English Wheel, the parts were bent to match the curvature, then our welder did his stuff. Polished and fitted they look very good and like they are meant to be. In a battle with the tarmac, the tarmac will lose with a ploughed furrow (oh, two wheeled tractor again).
The beautiful Australian made solid cast wheels must be fully polished once per year and are as good as new. TIP - wash the rough looking sand cast areas using methylated spirit followed by a wipe with white spirit and a buff with a rag to keep them mint. It just works 🤷 a discovery I made whilst giving the carb its annual clean out.
I created about seven different mudflap type I created about seven different mudflap type devices, strategically placed to deflect stones and gravel back down onto the road. They worked, as after the first year of ownership I had to touch-up about 200 stone chips on the frame. After fitting the various flaps, the number reduced to about 10.
Now the engine back in 1996. Its performance was lacking and it still had bad vibration issues even after the belt drive upgrade. Out it came and got taken down to probably the best HD engine builder in the UK (Canadian Head Quarters rate him in the World's top four) who impressed me with his monthly articles in the excellent but sadly defuct Heavy Duty magazine. He blue printed the engine, balanced the flywheels, gas flowing the heads, skimmed the heads for a mild compression increase and added a medium performance Head Quarters cam along with other premium parts. A single fire electronic ignition was also fitted. This was not all about performance, but about being as smoothly balanced as a 45° engine can be whilst having usable performance and still being fuel efficient. He achieved all this, so good job done.
After he'd worked on the engine castings, I requested them back to do some fettling of my own, especially making the head cooling fins look much better. The original 1989 & 1990 build Fatboy heads did not have black painted engines with machined fin edges, just raw aluminium castings with each fin edge being a mould split line. All these cast fin mould split lines were therefore removed to give a nice rounded edge.
The 1/4" mismatch between the two crankcase halves were ground down flush to each other using a large B&D foam abrasive sanding drum (an excellent piece of kit).

Andrew D King: Harley Davidson never made a 1st year FatBoy in 1989!!! Change over at the Harley-Davidson Factory takes place around late July/August of 1989. With the low production numbers(4400) associated with the Bomb FLSTF, the end run was around late February. I am privy to this information because i purchased a brand new 1990 FLSTF FatBoy in January of 1990, and delivery was in late April.

@@dennymcfastlane8530 A mate (Sam of the old Weekend Warriors) had a G reg UK Fatboy. Its chassis number reflected 1989 manufacture. It had self-canceling indicators, a weak different gearbox (it failed in Devon) and leather side paniers with different (and nicer) strap buckles. My 1990 one has completely manual indicator controls because the previous self-cancelling ones didn't work too well. Remember, the one I saw at the UK Motor Cycle Show was pre 1990 styling exercise/ prototype whatever. 1989 built bikes existed.

I might add something that a lot of people don't understand... It was in the late seventies early '80s the EPA got down on Harley really hard and told them no more bikes that leak oil and no more bikes that burn oil and that's when the evolution engine was born the saved Harley-Davidson and at that time Harley-Davidson actually had stock on the New York Stock exchange for the first time in their company and we all should have bought the stock that was $0.25 a share at the time... We would be millionaires by now as several did and several are.... And PS I remember when they had a big ceremony when they rode in a pack to the New York Stock exchange and it was Peter Fonda leading the pack on Captain America the chopper from easy Rider the movie

I just looked up what the compression reading should be and it's dead on at 125 psi... These bikes only had a compression ratio of 8.5 to 1 and would burn no lead gasoline at the pumps.... And 70 plus horsepower at the rear tire is ripping for stock engine it is perfect.... And others will probably tell you that the compression should be higher but that would be on engines that are carboned up so much so this one is clean with 125 psi is perfect.... Notice there's no vibration when it's sitting their idling and nothing is shaking on the bike at all.... Some of the old timers back then would mock this bikes saying it runs too smooth like a Honda that's because it's very well balanced engine you can buzz the dog crap out of these engines and they'll just come back for more
