    I have been retired for 12 years I still have a drawer full of homemade alignment pins that I made for installing flywheels and cylinder heads and everything else that weighed more than 25 lb.

    Warren I have been in business for 42 years. I have learned many lessons during that time. I pick the low-hanging fruit and let the rest of it go. Remember you can stay home and not make money versus taking your talent and your truck and your tools to jobs that are not worth it or don't pay.

  • @whitevamp1051

    tip for you get your self a couple of longer flywheel bolts and then cut the heads off from them and use them as guide pins when your putting on the flywheel, then your not struggling so much trying to hold it and put in the bolts. then just keep those bolts in your truck, so you have them for the next time. and if you use this trick for multiple things and have a bunch of different size's then color code them.

      I had to make up "tool" assembly kits for machines by asset number so the bits and pieces would not get 5S/Leaned out of the shop by someone who did not have to work on the equipment. "What is this for?" throw it away statement.

    Imagine that chain of events, install two intercooler mounts upside down, over stress the intercooler, lean out the engine, overheat it to the point the exhaust manifold warps and cracks, and tears up a brand new engine! Just goes to show experience is king, how many guys including myself would have assumed bad injectors, or it was just a poor remanded engine, and just threw another in, yes I would have been watching it obsessively for a few hours, and instruct the operator to have his eyes glued to the temp gauge... but never caught the charge air cooler failure aside from dumb luck... another great job Warren, and hopefully your customer recognizes, and never calls another mechanic ever!

    Thanks Warren, This has been a long project that takes its toll on time spent on it and space. I always hated having to wait on parts/assemblies then going back months later to put it back together.
    Definitely need to get you a couple of boxes of paint disassembly/assembly markers to help the memory; to reduce frustration. I got so bad I finally had to take separate pictures with a digital camera of everything before I took it apart and file the pictures on my computer by a machine number for each time I had to take a system apart.
    It might be a method to start when you get your new guy in since you will probably working on different stages of equipment that each other might have to put back together that did not take it apart to keep from getting on each others nerves, because we all do things differently with our habits, which is okay by yourself.
    Just something to put on the back of your mind and remember how things went when you started that you did not like working/following others...

    Oh!!!.. so it was the crank shaft that was the issue. I been wondering about that for weeks. That's why the balancer was rubbing on the case. That must have come from the factory like that from the beginning. I do know it was a remanufacture from Deere. Somebody over there didn't catch that before reassemble .. bummer. At least they were cool and made good by it.

    Getting into a partnership isn't bad, but you have to have EVERYTHING spelled out in a written contract. Although I don't care much for lawyers this is one of the times they have a purpose. The best way to keep a possible friend a friend.

    • @leegenix
      @leegenix 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Been there. Done that. The worst partnerships are with family. A certain family member stole from me and justified it by saying having “More experience and being more People Friendly” made it Right. However, I was paying all the bills, provided all the equipment, fees, licenses, insurance, cars, and doing the heavy lifting. Etc. Never Again.

    • @RenewTheRWandBlue
      @RenewTheRWandBlue 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Couldn't agree more. Partnerships with friends are bad enough, but partnerships with family are a whole nother level of dysfunction.
      Partnerships with family not only have the issue of personality incompatibility, they often include the extra joy of a generational difference. At least with friends if things go south and the partnership dissolves, you just lose a friend. Big deal. It's much more complicated to break off a partnership with a family member.

    While I was in the service I used to get very frustrated when either myself or someone else would tear down a piece of equipment and it would be a long time waiting on parts so I got in the practice of using ziplocks of different sizes to place all my bolts and fasteners or even brackets in and labeled it with what part or cover it belongs to. By doing this my stress level went way down and was a lot less confusing on what went where. I actually received a commendation award for thinking outside the box and was eventually spread through out the company. Just a thought that might help you out in the future

    Warren, I have a suggestion for you, and your viewers. Make a set of long bolts (4"-5") with the hex head cut off. In this case thread one or two long bolts into the crank. Then place the fly wheel, case housings, what ever onto the bolts to hold the part in alignment. Then thread in the remaining stock bolts through the part. Once the stock bolts are in, remove the alignment bolts, and replace them with stock bolts. I had a compartment in the the service truck that had two of each bolt size from 3/8" to 5/8", course and fine thread. This made assembling awkward parts, gaskets between parts a whole lot easier.

We finally talked it out and found out both had valid points for being angry. Then he suddenly died. I miss him more than life itself and would give anything to fight with him over a business (or anything) again. It really wasn't worth all the time we lost together. Make no mistake. When your dad is gone, you'll miss the hell out of him. Then its too late. Be well and sorry for the intrusion.

    JD really need to improve the mounting of those coolers...........cracks like that are insane. Even correctly installed there needs to be better rubber pad isolation to reduce cracking. Heavy trucks have had a similar problem, but then they are subjected to a lot of crashing and bashing on rough roads.

    The charge air cooler will crack at the weld due to heat and pressure cycles.The cast aluminum tank and the rolled aluminum header plate are different aluminum alloys.This will cause different expansion rates when exposed to heat.Weld crack will happen.

    @24:16 I thought the compressor bracket looked like it overlapped that top bracket? I guess it doesn't now after dropping it down to the other holes

    You are a tech savvy guy, have you considered a wire-less remote control for you boom crane? I see you run around, side to side, front to back, over and under then find your controller move a bit and do it again and again. In this day & age I would guess they could be had fairly reasonable.
    Sorry you got screwed on the rental stuff, and would agree most partnerships can suck, but, with a good contract, they can be done.
    Keep up the great, honest videos! Best to ya!

    Warren I talk to myself all the time. It's called thinking aloud and in any case you don't get no back chat. It may help if you have a dog to talk to.
