- Now that all the problems are fixed, I finally got to spend 3 hours to tune the 2zz-ge in my swapped Toyota Mr2 Spyder (Mr-s, zzw30). Let me show you what was done and especially, how it feels on the road! ENJOY and don't forget to Add me on Insta: @jesse_yaroo

To be honest, after driving my 2zz swapped Toyota Mr2 Spyder (zzw30) for the first time, I was a bit disappointed by the performance. There actually was a problem with some wiring that I managed to fix in this video and I finally got to tune the engine a bit (sorry I could only do 3 hours for the moment) but the performance is there! Roughly 200hp at the flywheel and it felt simply great on the road! I highly recommend this swap to anyone! I had to take advantage of the nice winter we got in the middle of winter here and take it for a spin!
The video is structured in the following manner:
I will explain the problem I had that prevented VVT to work in the last video and how I fixed it.
Of course Wide open throttle (WOT) ramp runs on the dyno and on the road
Some impressions on the road on how the lightly tuned 2zz feels in real world situations (Road usage) rather than just on the Dyno!
And a few comments to conclude the video
This video is, as usual, built like a tutorial so you can use this information on your Toyota Mr2 Spyder (ZZW30) or even other cars!
Enjoy!
Thank you very much for watching. A like, a sub, a share is much appreciated!

Hey 2zz Mr2 Owners! Who has passed the engine 200HP mark in NA form? 😁
A 2.5" PPE header and exhaust could likely help you to make it over the 200 HP mark. Also moving the air filter to where the battery is now.
@@tobihopmann7232 hi! Thanks for the advice! I will be surely making some more mods. The airfilter was already moved now. I will see if it makes much difference 👍🏼
Grind the intake manifold, lots of potential there and a fairly simple job.
@@14energy thanks for the feedback. What sort of grinding? Where? Hahaha
@@JesseSpec port match the aluminum intake maniforld on 2zz. Clearer now?
love my 2zz swapped 01 frog... the 2zz has such an iconic / unique sound ... i love it ! ! !
Hahaha thanks man! Yeah I love mine too! They are awesome engines... and if put in the right chassis... ohhhh boy
@@JesseSpec 100% AGREE ! ! these cars are soooo under rated / under appreciated... i hope it stays that way. cuz the prices of them are already starting to rise ! i picked mine up already 2zz swapped with aftermarket header and tein lowering springs on some 17s for $2k... kid didnt even know it was 2zz swapped...
threw some bc's on it with some carbtech race pads and some 225 45 15 hankook rs4s and MAN is she a blast in the canyons !
@@theregoesmiller389 that is an absolute bargain! Amazing! I do have a feeling they will get more popular though...
Been following this build and im happy to see it finished (or should i say running and driving. We all know they are never finished)! I get a big smile too when lift hits! Keep up the good work! 👍
Hello! Thanks for your message and encouraging words! You got that right! This is just a step that was reached! There is a lot more to come👍🏼 however I got to experience the « lift smile » which really is awesome!
Me too, goes from "oh, well it's not slow" to "oh crap! We are definitely moving now!" When VVTi-L kicks in yo
@@LupinYonderboy hahaha exactly. Now the goal is to go past 200bhp and see what we can do in order to achieve this goal!
@@JesseSpec following with interest. In the UK I could get an ecu for £800 and who knows how much for a tune to match your 200Bhp. That's an expensive 10hp :-(
@@LupinYonderboy remember my friend, this is my first crack at tuning this engine 3 hours on the dyno. I've mapped many different engines and on different tuning platforms, but its my first 2zz and only 3 hours. Thats It. Doing it correctly and experimenting on whats best takes days if not weeks to find what really works well (also in the long run). Also when playing around with various intakes and exhausts. Which means that there surely is more in it. Furthermore, the ecu is what allows you to actually free up more power when you do other mods (exhaust, intake, cams, etc.) so, sorry to say this, but your metrics of 10hp gain per 800pounds paid isn't a good way of putting it. On top of that, its not the 10 extra hp at the top of the rpm range that you feel, its the improvements in torque low down improvements in response that make the biggest difference felt rather than just thinking 800pounds for 10 hp :-) Do you understand what I mean? I feel an ECU should be the first mod you do to your engine. It frees up all the limitations that you have now and also the ones you will have on future mods and gives you the opportunity to custom tune your ecu to suit any give configuration present in future, which is worth a lot if you see what I mean.
(you've earned my longest reply to any comment to date ahahaha)
Hats off for back checking all your work and finding the issue. Keep’m coming
Thank you man! Will do 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Amazing work Jesse, just caught up to the current video. Very recent sub. Thank you for documenting your build so thoroughly. It will be invaluable for many people including (I hope) myself. Looking forward to where this car goes from here, kind of sad to hear it will not be a street car anymore. ✌🏽😎
Thanks for your comment man! You will see there will be a lot more comment to come 😁👍🏼 i hope you get to do your own 2zz swap 1 day. Its very interesting and fun!
Your a legend...the MR2 is alive :)
Hahahah! Thanks man 😁👍🏼👍🏼
Nice, man, sounds great! Glad to see you solved the problem.
Thanks man! Now lets see if I can make any more power 🔥👍🏼
Awesome build ! And seriously i had my earphone and my god i had some Eargasm🥵
Hahaha thanks man! I still need to get a perfect sound recording of a screaming 8.3k rpm dyno run 😍😍😍
That was more like it and there was the missing smile. Glückwunsch!
Danke dir 😁👍🏼
Congratulations .....once you finish tweaking the driving fun begins :)
It sure does! Thanks man!
Great job bro sounds amazing
Thanks man!
Great build. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot for watching and your support! 👍🏼👍🏼
Nice Jesse!! Time to enjoy it now :)
Thanks mate! I can’t wait to go on track!
Sweet 2zz swap
Thanks man! 🔥🔥🔥
You did an awesome job on that car !
Thanks for your help bro! Can’t wait to do the Dr Ignis monsters together!
Awesome video 🔥🔥🔥
Great to see you found the issue. Are you being hassled by local law enforcement or is it family that prefer you keep this little beast to the track only? I can fully understand either or both. I'm looking forward to the videos of you enjoying this on a track to see what it can really do 😁
Hello! Thanks for your comment! Yeah the first of both. My family supports it! Hahaha 🔥👍🏼 in june there will be the show down with Lotuses on track hahaha. Can’t wait
@@JesseSpec shame you're taking it off the road but at least now you won't have to hold back, because race car haha! Great to hear you have full support from your family, I'm fortunate enough to be in a similar situation. I can't wait to get my 2zz installed!
@@dafunkist awesome! Honestly, the swap is so clean that I could probably homologate the car. But as of now, I don’t have enough time and nerves right now to go through a full homologation and the costs are really high (4k USD). But who knows. Maybe in the future? 🤷🏻🤷🏻🤷🏻
@@JesseSpec wow! I'm surprised that it's so expensive! Our laws aren't as harsh regarding engine swaps thankfully, I hope you can get it done at some stage so you can enjoy your car more regularly 🤘
@@dafunkist yup! The Swiss government is nuts🥴 🤮. Enjoy your freedom 👍🏼
I am sure we would like to see your final tuning and how you get the maximum BHP out of the engine.
Hi! Don’t worry more content is coming of the 2zz. Stay tuned!
Hi, fainally I swaped MR2 1zz,to 2zz from Corolla 2001. But @Jesse Spec I need your help, in MR2 dashbord don't work: charging batery (lamp shines), Hand Brake lamp shines, and some times ABS blinking 2 or 3 times from 10 times starting the engine, and water heating gauge doesn't work. Were need too check, and what need to see?
all engine and ecu from corolla. Runs good, lifts from 6.5rpm works, runs untill 8.2rpm.
Thanks for help!
Hi, good job for the swap! Did you use my videos?
When using my procedure, non of the lights you have were on, on my car…
@@JesseSpec Yes I saw video long time ago, need to see now fresh, and faind in wich video it is 😉
@@marius_mask Ok Perfect! Keep me posted how it goes!
Man that sounds nasty, I'll be swapping as well soon ✌️

@@zaby_gt9412 hahahah thanks buddy! Good luck with your swap 😁👍🏼
Iam excited...whats better than an MR2?.......................................two mr2's...iam getting my second one tomorrow :)
Hahaha cool! To be honest I was thinking about it too. This car is too good to not be able to drive it on the road!
@@JesseSpec yes do it...i noticed they are climbing in price...i now have 2 Black MR2's ...one for road and one for track :)
@@motorcycle_garage i was thinking of doing the same. After whats keeping me from doing it is the GT86 HKS Supercharger I picked up. I was also playing with the idea of getting a 2zz lotus instead of the GT86. The Mr2 is my GRIP weapon for the track
hey jesse spec, mind if you list the most you made to get to 200hp on the dyno like you shown in the video? interested in your setup
Hi! Do you want the list of mods I did to get that power figure?
@@JesseSpec yes the list of mod, please. The durn auto correct changed it to most instead of mod. Hahah
@@vlwl26 for the moment, stock revised 2zz engine. Monkey headers, test pipe, Fujitsubo catback. Custom POD air filter intake and apexi PFC ecu on my own custom tune (work in progress).
Next will be more tuning and an oil cooler.
Otherwise OS giken racing clutch and lsd in c60 transmission... i think thats about it
What intake? It sounds soo nice!
Hi! Thank you 👍🏼
Stock intake header but straight silicone pipe with k&n cone filter near air intake on the side of the car
@@JesseSpec Thanks for replay! 2zz was nice, what you think verus k20?
@@cct3053 hi! I didn’t finish the k20 swap yet but I can tell you I love the 2zz like crazy!
Check this vid I made, its a good comparison:
th-cam.com/video/slX3GCdidMI/w-d-xo.html
what tires (model an size f+r) are you running?
I'm planning to do a very similar build with mine soon. Very good work!
Hi, take a look at my video on comparing tire sizes. I give all the information in that video. I compare 15vs16inch wheels and tires
Would moving the air intake into colder air give more power?
Hi! Thanks for your comment! I’m a firm believer in facts rather than « bla-bla » this is why a video on this subject will be coming soon! Since I wan’t to extract more power so this is coming next! Stay tuned
Just curious, did you ever put the car back on the scales after the motor swap? Also, what is the diameter of your exhaust?
Hi! I haven’t put the car back on the scales but surely will soon! I’ll keep you posted. Exhaust I need to check. Don’t have the data with me now
Curious to know what your valve clearances are on the intake cam and have you checked for any intake cam wear lately.
Hi, have you watched my other videos? I’ve actually checked them in one of them and filmed it and they were spot on. I’ve done 3-4000km since I did that check so I don’t see the point of redoing it! May I ask why you are asking? There has been no unusual wear on the intake cams last time I checked 👍🏼
@@JesseSpec Because myself and others who followed the manual specs are experiencing broken rockers and intake cam wear. It doesn't exactly happen at 4000km, but eventually will. Mine broke at around 14k and wore probably way before that. And the funny thing is that the engine runs fine until you hit higher rpms where you'll get a misfire.
@@JesseSpec Just watched your 2ZZ prep video and I see you've used 0.01mm - 0.16mm for the intake cam. Just a heads up, you may be in for a wiped intake cam, so check often. If not, then either some of us are ordering and receiving new, but weak OEM camshafts or rockers.
@@hiblendmedia gotcha! Thanks for the info 👍🏼👍🏼
@@hiblendmedia ok thanks. I’ll keep an eye out for that. My engine has 140k km I think. Could be also due to oil quality I think and lack of maintenance. Seems likely
What's your exhaust setup? Apexi pfc
Hi, thanks for your comment. I did a video on my full Exhaust setup. You can find it in my videos on my channel. Take a look 👍🏼😁
What wheel sizes are you running on yours?
Hi! Check my Wheel video I made on my channel. There are the exact specs there 👍🏼
@@JesseSpec Thanks, I'll do it now. ☺️
@@povilaslondon No problem! Thank you
any way you could share your tune? I basically have your same setup. it be a good baseline i could start from because my base tune on my apexi is absolute garbage it save me a lot of time and logging to fix
Sorry man. Thats one thing I’m not going to do😁👍🏼

Hi, you need more rpm
Hi, I tried going higher but power drops off. I don't think there is much more in it in its current configuration. And doing more than 8300rpm on stock valve train scares me a bit hahah
