I can relate to Kerry. My father died 25 hrs before I was born.
Skipping forward, when I was a teenager, i always said that when I had kid's that I'd always be there for them because I knew what it's like not having a dad around.
If there is any advice I could give any parent it's this.
Always try to be the parent you would want to have. Kids are special and they love us no matter what.

Don’t take this wrong, but it takes a lot for a child to forgive and not carry a chip on his shoulder because his dad was selfish by letting someone else step in and raise their kid. By him turning out like he did his adoptive father and his mother raised him right. It’s good he got to spend quality time with Dale Sr. maybe that was in gods plan, to let Dale Sr. have the time to make it right.

My respect and prayers will always be yours. As someone who lived thru a troubled marriage that was hard and sad for our two children. I hope all dads that have to go thru what I did will fight for joint custody and not just accept being a once in a while dad. I was told I really messed up, I would have to baby sit every weekend instead of rejoicing in new freedom and less responsibility. I made it clear that every minute I spent with my children was cherished and a blessing.
I never thought of having the most loved son and daughter in my life " babysitting" .
I cannot say I understand or it was for the best concerning Dale Sr. decision but I am convinced he has no way of knowing how his life would evolve. I ve heard Dale Jr say he had to stay with Theresa while Sr. worked on his cars or had commitments he had to keep. He tried everyway to get to be with his father and around racing instead having to stay home with Theresa.
My father worked a job that kept him away from home most of the time and on one trip he was killed in a car accident. I was six and devastated. I never fished or got to do more than wave bye as he left to earn a living for us all in the short time I had a father. For those who have had a lifetime with your fathers don t take the blessing you have for granted and tell him you love him every time you are together.
You never know when your last chance might be.

Great story... I remember watching the ending of the FOX Sports video with Martha Earnhardt and Steve Byrnes, and she said that if Dale Jr doesnt have any children, the Earnhardt name would not continue in racing... So basically, she is saying that she doesnt see her great grandson Jeffrey as an Earnhardt... Hell, even yesterday in the Monster Energy Open Final Practice, Mike Joy, the FOX Analyst, made a valid point. He said that the fans are still upset that when Jr retires, there's not gonna be an Earnhardt on the track. Hello? Does Jeffrey Earnhardt not exist as an Earnhardt? Yes Jeffrey is in a low funded car with poor finishes, but at least he's doing something that Dale Jr never did, and that's start from the bottom instead of having things handed to him. He's doing the same thing his father Kerry and grandfather Dale Sr did, something that Dale Jr cant relate to. Jeffrey gets asked a lot, "Why won't you drive for Uncle Junior?" and he always says, "I want to experience things on my own, and do things my way." I praise Jeffrey Earnhardt.

The Earnhardts are all about working had nothing is spoon fed. Jeffery wants to start from the bottom like everyone else. Jr asked him if he wanted a ride and he said no. Your an actual dumbass for saying this please delete your comment and right some facts. Jr had to work hard. Dale didn’t wanna give jr a ride but tony sr wanted him to and he did and jr won races.

What charms me, BASS PRO SHOPS, now sponsoring Martin Truex who was a DEI driver and learned and Austin Dillon, an RCR driver whom sponsored Dale Sr, first. BRING HIM BACK Richard!!!! BRING HIM BACK! And today, I have to bury MY Dad. Jeffrey needs a GOOD SPONSOR because he always daggum gets more out of his low-funded stuff. Always.

@@jamesh8893, Kerry was on the Dale Jr Download show just recently. He and Jr were living in a trailer home for quite a while. When he came to a family reunion for the first time, he and Kelley sat together for hours just talking nonstop and catching up, not paying attention to anyone else. I'd say they're close enough.

What? What?!!!! Ahem, Dale Sr wasn’t eating ramen noodles every night. He was spending it on racing, and he made a fine career of it.
But at what cost? A handful of troubled kids still reeling in the aftermath.
Gee, sorry Sr. fans- he might not have been well known in his life (and maybe still alive) if he’d made other choices like not racing and being a career guy and family man instead. He made his choice and facts are facts. Listen to the interviews of all the kids and their disappointment stuff from their youth and you can clearly hear how Dale Sr’s climb to success had a pretty high cost.
He didn’t relinquish custody so Kerry could have a better life; Dale Sr. relinquished custody so he could go race and live fast. Listen to the kids...

fishhuntadventure you realize sr had him when he started racing and didn’t race cup till age 26 and buy that time Kerry was almost an adult. Sr didn’t care when he was younger but from 1995 to 2001 he had it all and was committed to his family. He said he realized that he could of done a way better job as a father. But he made his choice and he said also that giving up his kids were the hardest choice but in the long run it paid off cause he had his kids and had it all. Look at the interview in 2001 with him and Darrel waltrip he was so happy.

I hate how much credit this takes from his step dad Jack and how much it makes Sr. look like an idiot. Dale didn't put Kerry 'up for adoption'. He knew he was going to be with his mother and he knew Jack was a great man and Kerry would be loved. He didn't give him up to just anyone.

‘You actually believe that? His dad didn’t see him for 13 years! How could you choose that?
Priorities. Tells a lot about a man’s character. And judgement; very poor judgement. Go listen to Dale Jr on graham bessinger (sp?) talk about his dad ‘missing’ in his youth. Kerry didn’t even see Sr. week to week like Jr. did.
And I don’t hear any negative comments over his step dad- just the missing real dad was a problem for him.
That you don’t get that confounds me.
I’m divorced. The kids are grown up now. I could have walked away but I got custody. And it was hard, sacrifices were made. Sure, I HAD OTHER CHOICES, I could have walked away, it would have been much easier. But what kind of man walks away from his children? That’s what I knew in my heart: a man doesn’t turn his back on his kids. The love and nurture of both parents even in divorce are vital to the emotional, physical, and psychological health of adult children.

Maybe Kerry's mom didn't want Dale in the picture? Being remarried and understanding at the time that she knew Dale couldn't afford to help out financially. I'm sure she was able to have Dale agree to legally turn over all his parental rights Knowing this would make it easier on him for his racing because according to her that's what he chose over their marriage. People do things they may later regret in life because of the heat of the moment that's in their lives. People do make mistakes. But hey!! It did work out for Kerry in the end. He's an awesome father husband and person all around. Because of the people that were in his life all throughout it

    Sheesh
Dale was a turd the more you hear about him.
He was good to everyone else but his kids and 1st 2 wives.
Left everything to his wife that ruined it all instead of letting Junior build DEi. up and let it continue to be 1 of the top Race Teams in the garage and she went out of her way to make sure that it didn’t happen.
