Agreed. My grandpa was a WWII vet and as conservative as they come, but he had so many demons from the war that he drunkenly told me once as a kid, "I can't believe I'm allowed to own a gun still..."
I think Randy Weaver and his wife were absolute nut bars, to be clear. I think one thing lost in translation, and why they were able to garner so much sympathy was the fact that during this time frame federal law enforcement was going a little crazy and reacting like a quasi military organization. Americans don't react well to gestapo tactics. Americans also have a 4th amendment right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects. All they had on Randy was the 'suspicion' that he was modifying weapons illegally. When the shooting started it was the marshals office that fired first, killing the dog, and never announced that they were there or for what purpose or in what capacity. The hole thing was a major cluster on the side of the Feds. As for the sniper, he fired two shots striking Randy Weaver in the shoulder and his wife in the head while she was carrying her child. If the sniper was that good of a shot he would have domed Randy not a shoulder shot. It was incredibly reckless to make that shot while she was carrying her child, and it was completely unjustified. And finally, they didn't think the house was so booby trapped that they didn't send in agents to plant cameras or to send an unarmed civilian up to mediate. The whole thing was a clown show.

There was an order given to the FBI snipers to shoot any male holding a rifle, whether they posed a danger or not. This all originated from agents attempting to entrap Weaver on a technicality to blackmail Weaver to use him to get at someone else in his neighborhood. Weaver wasn’t accused of anything before the agents entrapped him.
The 14 year old didnt know he was shooting at a cop. He was just returning fire at a person who killed his dog. And this was in the middle of nowhere. You would never expect to see militarized police surrounding your property for missing 1 court date.
This epic and criminal mishandling of a situation had a direct influence on what happened in Waco soon after. And in the audience at Waco was a guy named Timothy McVeigh. And McVeigh of course took the anger from these occurrences and with Terry Nichols killed 168 innocent men, women and children in the Oklahoma City bombing.
Both of these incidents should be more well known for Americans, it was a clear demonstration of the incompetence of the government in handling situations like these and it only leads to the same radicalism they were trying to prevent.

I was in high school when this happened, and that's when I learned a couple of important life lessons. First was the utter bias of the media; to wit, suddenly Randy Weaver gained two new first names and became universally known as "White Separatist Randy Weaver." eventually I began to ask myself two questions: first, why don't they ever provide any evidence he was a white separatist? And second, even if true, what the hell does that have to do with the facts of the case? The second lesson I learned is how untrustworthy the government is. They insisted the man was a grave danger to society yet his lawyer secured a Not Guilty verdict without calling a single defense witness. And when it came time to hold the abusive government actors accountable, their criminal cases were removed from state court to federal court where the charges against them were promptly dismissed. Unfortunately things have only become 50 times worse on both counts in the intervening years.
Fun fact the US Supreme Court is currently in the process of deciding if they should strip the ATF of the power to make laws as they tend to make laws and change those laws to suit their immediate needs. Currently both the Supreme Court and the Congress are leaning away from the ATF.
I'm a big fan of Daz. I think he's hilarious but he is way off on this one. Those ATF agents slaughtered that family with no remorse. I guess this kind of shows the difference between Americans and Brits. America, with constitutional rights, has a strong distrust of government. It really grew around Vietnam with people realizing that power corrupts, and you can’t always trust what they say. He was crazy, but they shot first, they were the aggressors. A lot of people, especially gun enthusiasts, believe the different departments operate with too much impunity and wield too much power. For example, the FBI was supposed to be temporary, and is still not “officially” a department, and people accuse them of abusing their power or being a weapon for the president to wield.
Every person that leaves the US military is “discharged”. Note that he was honorably discharged. It just means he left honorably. Probably fulfilled his contract and didn’t want to re-enlist.
A couple of points for you. First the sheriffs had been speaking with the family and he was going to go in for his court appearance on this mis-scheduled time when a judge issued an arrest warrant and ordered the sheriffs to act. The sheriffs initiated fire by shooting the dog. The boy seeing his shot dog and men in camo with no sheriffs dept ID, opened fire upon then and the sheriff was killed as was the boy with what was reported as over 20 rounds fired at the child. Second, the reporting back to federal agencies left out the facts of the incident including they had shot a boy and only reported they had a sheriff killed. Acting on this highly incomplete info, a federal judge ordered the house be assaulted and any armed people were to be shot on sight. no attempts at contact or negotiation were attempted and command was very lax at the sight. Not to excuse the man. He was wrong to make the sawed off shotguns and in the normal course of events would have likely paid a fine or gotten a minor jail sentence. It was the Aryan church members who had said they needed to declare war on the US and the ATF agent assumed Mr Weaver was one though it was stated multiple times he disagreed with them on most things. The government made dozens of errors here that multiplied the wrongness of their position to epic proportions that they stood by rather than make any effort to rethink their position. There were so many communication errors and each magnified the problem. A sad day in our history.
Yeah it's really annoying this video said that. The weavers never declared war on the US, they just retreated up to their land in nazi country and tried to disassociate from the government. They weren't waging any war. That's really misleading and inaccurate
Yeah I need an explanation. I’ll give you an example of someone that was on our watch list here in the uk. He was a radical nutcase very similar to weaver. Had religious beliefs and didn’t trust the government etc. we were “watching” him. Then he killed over 20 innocent people including children at an Ariana grande concert. Should we have done more than just watch him?
@@officeblokedaz How well were you "watching him" for him to be able to go kill people? Pre-crime only exists in the movies. Individual liberty only ends where an other's begins. Weaver was not bothering anyone. Not trusting the government isn't criminal. Yet, they went to his property and executed his dog, son, and wife. Every individual has the duty and right to protect themselves. Including their family and property. Supreme Court has ruled that law enforcement is not obligated to protect the people. If they weren't trying to set him up, none of this would've happened. I'm happy to further explain and/or elaborate on anything you need clarified.
In the US it is perfectly legal to defend yourself, even from law enforcement. If they just break onto your property and start shooting without announcing themselves and produce a warrant they are no different than any other armed trespasser. There's been quite a few cases of police being shot during no-knock raids that resulted in no charges, or police shooting innocent people at wrong addresses during no-knock raids and being charged with murder.
It didn't matter what they believed, they didn't attack the government in any way. They still had rights, and their rights were violated. The fact that they carried guns everywhere is irrelevant. It was their legal right to be armed. On top of that they lived in the middle of the woods. Can we say wild life? The boy shot the agent thinking he was a trespasser that killed his dog. The government says a lot of things. It doesn't matter what they say, it is about what they prove. Did they show evidence. Do I like neo nazi's, no, I am black. But we have the right to associate with who we want. If they don't have the right of free association, then I don't either. You can believe what you want as long as you don't violate my rights in the process. You can believe that I don't belong in this world, just as long as you don't take any action in removing me from it. Would I rather you not believe that way, of course. But mind control is not an acceptable concept, despite the teachings of the thought police and cancel culture.
They snuck onto the property, and without so much as announcing themselves, shot Sam Weaver's dog. Then had the balls to be surprised when someone started shooting back. I don't care who you are. If you pull that in the backwoods of north Idaho, 10 times out of 10 you'll be sending all future communication via ouija board.
Mind you, this was all over 2 shotguns that had apparently too short of barrels for the government’s liking. Shortening barrels on guns doesn’t make them more deadly. It hurts velocity & range of the gun, making it less effective actually. The government’s argument was that these shotguns were made less effective & therefore should be banned. The illogical thinking by politicians on guns is amazing.

In the United States, we have an issue with law enforcement agencies operating outside of the scope of law and outside of the constitution. I remember this whole episode. The government was crazy. Whoever made these decisions to attack the Weavers should’ve suffered consequences. The US people hated the govt. even more after this.
Weaver wasn't an Aryan Nations member, he wasn't 'at war' with the government. He had some strange, end times religious beliefs and believed the government had become despotic and authoritarian. This proved to be true. The Weavers were just living their lives in their little cabin and harming nobody. The government could have just knocked on Weaver's door to talk to him about things, but, as they often did, they went in with guns blazing. To a militarized organization, all things appear aggressive, armed threats. The Weavers carried guns because they believed the government forces a danger, and likely to attack. Again, they were right. Samuel Weaver was just out walking with his dog, when he and the dog were attacked by an armed stranger. He fired in self defense.
Shotguns in the US have to have barrels over 18 inches if they have a butt stock. If they are under 18inches they are considered an NFA item which needs special paperwork and a process done by the atf and a tax stamp. The atf had nothing to charge Randy on so they had an agent purposely tell him where to cut the shotgun barrel so it was just under 18 inches(i mean JUST under) so they’d finally have a reason to raid his property. People still distrust the government over how this was handled.
The only good thing about this case was that the US Marshall who opened fire on the dog and 14y/o for no reason other than the dog playfully coming up to him causing them to get noticed was killed. That guy had it f*cking coming.
The problem is up until law enforcement shot the dog they were the ones to shoot first. The Weavers did nothing but make threats. No action was ever taken by the Weaver’s. The government totally shot his Constitutional Rights in the ass.
According to one of the podcasts I've listened to about this story, the son and Kevin Harris were out hunting for food, since they couldn't leave the property. The dog found the agents hiding in the woods, the agents shot the dog, and never once announced themselves as police. Harris and the son, who were both armed with hunting rifles, thought that the dog was shot by trespassers and the boy returned fire. Even still the agents never announced themselves at police and fired back at Weaver and Harris with a fully auto gun and killed the boy. Like the guy in the video said, you don't have to agree with the beliefs the Weavers held, the federal government botched this whole situation, which is why this story is so important to the Waco fiasco. When Waco happened the ATF was looking for an easy win to make everyone forget about Ruby Ridge, and they somehow made things even worse for themselves.
Like the narrarator said during the video, it was a shit-show from the beginning! Should have never happened the way it did. The FBI to this day says it's one of their biggest mistakes, if not THE biggest. I'm not taking any sides on this, but the Weaver's never hurt anyone before this shitshow started. Yes, they may not have paid their taxes and he didn't show up for a court that they fucked up on, but it should have never come to this. And as for the whole thing that started it, him sawing off the barrels of some shotguns, that's a stupid ass law to begin with! It's my property, I should be able to do whatever I want to it. Now, if he ever used one of them to kill someone, THEN he has broken a law. I'm probably going the watchlist now! LOL
Most comments here are accurate. I just want to add 2 things. I like you Daz, but you are wrong about this. 1, he may have legally avoided paying taxes, by homesteading, and 2, the government said he declared war. When you declare war, you don't stay at home, which is what Randy Weaver did. You attack, which he didn't do.
ATFs blunder of an assault on Ruby Ridge. Led to their attempt of redemption for themselves at Waco. Which turned into a disaster as well. Which as a result led to Timothy McVeighs revenge bombing of the ATF building in Oklahoma City.
This is not the country I was born in. The government has gone well past their public given authority. It is 'We the People', not we the sheeple. It only seems to be getting worse from back since the Ruby Ridge days...
@@1980bcman This kind of stuff happens almost everyday in the US. And has been going on for decades. But I guess it’s only relevant when the “victims” look like you, huh?

There are a few great documentaries out there about Ruby Ridge. Probably too much to do a reaction to but you guys should watch a couple of them on your own time. There's one with the oldest daughter that gives a perspective of what was going on in the house during that time. 🍻
The police and government were absolutely wrong! Huge human rights violations that caused an absolute uproar in this country and a lot of anti-government sentiment and rightfully so. The government acted like fascists. You can violate people's rights like this and think it's ok.
the only thing the feds proved was why he didnt trust the government.and the atf instructed him to saw those shotguns knowing that its illegal and didnt tell him my government is disgusting.
Daz you definitely would have hurt a lot of innocent people smh. You don't kill people because of their beliefs. They wasn't hurting anyone. If that was your wife and child I bet you would get it then.
I'm no expert but from what the video said I would speculate that an agent killed the dog on private property allowimg the owners of the property to legally return fire for self defense. The child was shot and the agent who murdered the child was the one killed during the owners self defense which is probably why they didn't mention who would be charged for the murder of the child and dog. The agents are in the wrong and take all blame for any crimes or deaths that happened on the property. The agents had an illegal search warrant or illegal warrant for his arrest due to the clerical issues and therefore illegal trespassed and assaulted the home. Giving crazy the legal right to defend himself and property.
Very interesting. My father was at Ruby Ridge, and I am a former LEO. Understand that when the F B I team shot the wife, they broke the rules of engagement (which were to shoot any “armed” adult. ) The wife was only carrying a baby. So when Daz mentions he is siding with law enforcement, at this point in the video this is what you are agreeing with as far as the teams’ actions. Just saying. Enjoying though, and I am a long-time subscriber. Cheers from Colorado!
The kids dog was killed by the feds. The kid didn’t know they were law enforcement and as a result the kid fired on them. They fired back. They relayed the information that a federal agent was killed but did not mention that they killed the kid so when the fbi came in the were under the assumption that the agent was killed by the adults at the cabin. That’s why they went in guns a blazin. The government failed in communications which resulted in their grossly overly aggressive response. No body needed to die.
@@officeblokedaz I’m late to this video and this comment, but you have to stop equating your lifestyle and your “normal” to other people. Carrying a gun when you live in the middle of a forest with dangerous animals is not abnormal in the US or even Canada. If we threw you in the Montana wilderness I’m sure you’d feel more comfortable walking around with a rifle, mate.
In the US, a sheriff is the TOP law enforcement officer. Above him would be an elected Coroner, then an elected Judge (in his state’s county). A Prosecutor is below a Sheriff. State Police DO NOT out rank him. A Governor or a Sheriff can call out the National Guard to suppress a riot or rebellion. 2X I did that for Pendalton Reformatory riot, and a riot in our city after a police shooting in the 90’s. The city riot we jumped off the truck and everybody scattered like roaches. The Reformatory was more difficult, because we were armed only with sticks and plastic shields!
I remember Geraldo going in with a helicopter. The family was wacky but this situation went so out of control. Feel bad for the kids. Terrible. All of it could have been done differently.
How does Daz always manage to have such terrible takes on these topics? The government undoubtedly screwed this up majorly every step of the way; a complete embarrassment.
There's a reason the US Constitution only allows citizens born inside the country to hold government positions. To understand the freedoms & rights expressed or enjoyed by the American people you just have to. What do people who've never had such a thing truly understand? Nothing, but they can pretend that they do until moments like this when you actually say to yourself, "jeez, for a moment I actually forgot that he's not an American".
PBS Frontline did a much better documentary about this than the video they watched. If you’re interested, I would recommend watching that. Granted, it is about an hour long, it goes into more detail about events leading up to the shootout where the kid and the marshal was killed, the murder of Vicki Weaver, the standoff, the public outrage, the surrender and the aftermath. They interviewed federal agents involved and even had one of the Weavers’ daughters on for an interview and sharing her memories. It’s very powerful and very well done.
Just like a child, you're taking what the narrator said for granted. There's so much stuff the investigation uncovered that federal law enforcement did was wrong. Randy Weaver's wife had a gun in a holster, but her hands were full of her baby, she couldn't pull her gun, she wasn't brandishing, which is the traditional meaning of "being armed", an actual gun in hand. The sniper was only 100 yards away, one of you used to shoot precision rifles, these guys can shoot a fly at that distance with their high magnification scopes. He clearly saw she was unarmed but shot her in the head anyway. He used the Nuremberg Nazi defense, "I was only following orders." These knuckleheads are so brainwashed they'll commit any atrocity as long as they can blame their orders. About her beliefs about the end times, are you suggesting we automatically HAVE to kill people with schizophrenia? It wasn't mentioned in the video that Randy Weaver cut one of the barrels an eighth of an inch too short for legality and the other shotgun barrel was cut a half inch longer than legal requirement, they were still too long to conceal, technically they weren't "sawed off" at all. His son and wife were killed because of an eighth of an inch. Don't forget, he was forced to attend as an informant by the ATF in the first place. Other commenters mentioned that the sun was shot in the back, while running away. Do a little more research before you judge people.
@@officeblokedaz If you live in the mountains of Idaho where there are bears, wolves, and other dangerous animals, you better have a gun on your hip or even, a rifle over your shoulder. Unlike England, there are still dangerous animals here and actual wild lands.
Open carry is completely legal (and "normal") where I live and I used to see dozens of customers come in where I worked wearing handguns and fixed bladed knives and felt very safe around them. Think about it, where do bad guys shoot people? Gun free zones where no one is allowed to have guns. Having a gun in your house is the same as having a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, or a spare tire in your car. You never to have to use it, but it's a good thing to have on hand, in case you do. I promise, a crackhead will get to you faster than the cops can put their donut down to put their car in "Drive".
I once met Randy Weaver at a gun show in Las Vegas after the whole thing was over, he wrote a book about the incident, i am proud to have met him and James "BO" Gritz, what the government did to Randy and his family was WRONG, Samuel Weaver is the one who shot and killed the first agent after that agent shot and killed the family dog, I do Remember watching the trial, the Government prosecutor called more than 125 witnesses all of them told different stories, Weavers defense lawyer ripped each and every one of them apart on the stand, after the government rested it's case, the judge asked the defense lawyer to present the case for Randy Weaver and Kevin, and he stood up and said "The defense rests" confident that the prosecuting attorney did a thorough job of destroying the prosecution case all by himself, and he was right, in less than 60 minutes, all 12 jurors came back with not guilty verdicts for both Randy and Kevin, now what Randy personally told me, was the original charge of cutting off the barrel of a shotgun, was as bogus as all the rest were, the "INFORMANT" asked him to cut the barrel down to a length of less than 16 inches, he did not do that, he did in fact cut off the barrel to the LEGAL minimum length of 16 inches, now modifying a shotgun here by cutting down the barrel is LEGAL, cutting off too much is not legal, Randy told me that he took the shotgun home, cut it down to the LEGAL minimum and returned it to the informant, the ATF "CLAIMED" that it was shorter than allowed by law, but they were trying to snow job him by measuring it from the wrong point, what they did at Waco Texas a few months later was wrong too, we are supposed to have religious freedom in this country, and the attorney general Janet Reno, all by herself decided that these people at the Mount Carmel compound were not practicing a protected religion, and ended up killing 83 innocent Americans mostly women and children! there is nothing wrong with Randy's mental health, Vicky and He, moved to where they moved to because they just wanted to be left alone and live the way they wanted to live, but the ATF could not allow that to happen! Randy did not want to declare war on the U.S. he wanted to be left alone to raise his family and live his life in peace. I do not know when this video was made, but the lawsuit amounts that were stated was wrong, yes all the children did get $1,000,000 each, Randy got $100,000, ITITIAL payment, in 1999 he and Kevin won their lawsuit, Kevin was paid 7.1 million dollars, the children were paid an additional 4.5 million dollars apiece, and Randy was paid another 17 million dollars, I think this video was made before the final outcome of the legal battle was complete. remember both Randy and Kevin were shot, so they got larger payouts than the children that were not shot. and their rules of engagement to shoot any adult that was armed without notice is ridiculous on it's face, Vicky was not armed when that sniper shot her through her head, she was holding a 10 months old infant, not a firearm. and when you win an amount of money from the federal government, that money can not be taxed.
Nah, the Feds 100% fucked this situation up from beginning to end. Dude was a nut, but his "radical" ideology about the government were proven to be spot on in this case.
They quite literally proved his point
That was the sad part. Same with Waco. Isolation in fear of the government to only being taken down by the government.
Daz, everyone has the right to believe whatever they want and live as they want on their land. Absolutely does not right a slaughter of an innocent family. Not sure why Daz keeps saying they were actively in war with our government. Clearly it was the opposite.

And that isn't surprising in the least...
Yes, the sniper did another sketchy move there.

Your support for the government in this is a bit telling. It clearly is pointed out in the video the incompetence of the feds in the situation.
What can you expect, theyre brits. They are all the governments servants.
He didn't declare war on the US government, they said the leader of the Arian church compound had declared war. Randy just wanted to be left alone...
I wondered why this siege wasn’t done on the church instead of a family loosely involved in it
Yeah it's really annoying this video said that. The weavers never declared war on the US, they just retreated up to their land in nazi country and tried to disassociate from the government. They weren't waging any war. That's really misleading and inaccurate
Dave gets it. Daz does not. Let me know if you need an explanation.

Average citizens have their constitutional rights violated regularly....But those in positions of authority/power are no subject to those same standards. We have a double standard. And law enforcement keeps getting more militarized every year. They focus more on military style training and equipment than how to defuse stressful situations. Ive never seen Daz be so incredibly wrong...
Mike is the most underrated comedian. From the sleepy barber comment the other day to the back garden comment here, fuckin hilarious!
With Dave on this one.
Abolish the ATF.

These people just wanted to be left alone.
Very interesting. My father was at Ruby Ridge, and I am a former LEO. Understand that when the F B I team shot the wife, they broke the rules of engagement (which were to shoot any “armed” adult. ) The wife was only carrying a baby.
