That last big night was not so hard with the hammer. He just got stagger locked and never hit me and then he was down and I could talk to him. So you definitely don't need magic or guns on him when you wield a giant hammer! Then the other nights never attack and he lives.
I'm still about 20 less wood so I can't get the hammer upgrade. You mentioned in a comment a few vids ago to be careful about upgrading too many different items. Was that a warning to avoid doing the hammer, or something else?
@@GregDorn you just need to make sure you only upgrade one of each type. Only one sharp weapon, one blunt weapon, one armor etc. At the end of this playthrough I end up not having enough resources to fully upgrade a grenade because I think I upgraded 2 different sharp weapons
