    I graduated from imperial 11 years ago. My first job offer when I was back to HK was only HK$14k per month to join a bank or $8k for an engineer job in China. Thankfully, things changed over my last 10 years of career, at least I got a respectful pay at this point as being a management consultant. Starting salary meant less significance in your early career, choosing a right career path and having a good boss definitely are the keys.

    I’ve seen so many young people who graduated from not a very popular university in U.K. or elsewhere, who likewise made it big in their skill field. I don’t really think that the university you came from matters, it all boils down first to skills that are in demand, your attitude in work and life, EQ and luck in life.

    • @abysswatcher4907
      @abysswatcher4907 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well, it matters greatly. In popular universities you have better educational resources (lectures, study sessions, career fairs) and you are surrounded by some of smartest minds, you are basically set if you have talent and are hard working. In comparison, you must study really hard in a lower tier university and face situations where you are the best yet do not have environment to grow. You may not have so many good career fairs or networking opportunities than top university, and knowledge gap will compound over time. In short, high level education matters, statistically at the very least.

    • @mommylou2417
      @mommylou2417 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abysswatcher4907 well, that’s your opinion, you may be right but I’ve seen many young graduates made it very well in their careers, it’s not the university that sets their life but it’s their hard work and luck.

    • @abysswatcher4907
      @abysswatcher4907 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mommylou2417 True, but still when evaluating data with statistics it's important to pay attention to the base rate. There are a lot more not-so-famous universities than those are, so maybe you see 3 guys coming from not-so-good universities and 1 guy coming from a top university and think OK maybe university doesn't matter, but in reality, it's 3 guys out of 1M people and 1 guy out of 50K people. If those young graduates all went to top universities, I would predict that their career growth could be even better.

    The Bio Engineer interview was slightly botched - the question "How much can make from being a PhD", she replied "1500/month" - I bet that her answer meant you get 1500/month from Ph.D student stipend. Ph.D graduates make absolutely more than 1500/month. Even B.S. graduates make more than that.

    I visited a friend who studied engineering at Imperial, and attended some of his lectures. I also studied engineering (EE) in Germany, it seemed their classes were 1-2 semesters behind ours, and maths classes were more watered down/less rigorous for engineering studnets. Student life in London (or any big cities) also seemed more disconnected from university and more dependent on personal efforts or private circle of friends.
    In the end, one pays more for the brand name or connections. But unless you know how to use those connections or intend to go into banking or consulting where brand name matters, for real engineering work, it is your skills and experience that matter.

    Just for comparison: US top universities usually cost about $30000 to $60000 a year. For law degree - (JD which is a PHD equivalent, is a 3 year post graduate program), tuition cost is also about $50000 to $60000). For that seven years of higher education, total investment cost would be around $300,000 to $500,000 USD. 1st year lawyer salary varies tremendously, from the low of public defender at about $50,000 a year to "BigLaw" corporate lawyer at about $220,000 a year. Hence, most top students would like to enter into one of the top 14 schools. And to be selected into one of those "BigLaws", usually you need to be top 10% (or at least top 25%) of these top 14 schools - a true top of the pyramid. But the money is there - a fifth year associate in these "BigLaws" on the average makes about $350,000 a year (which is similar to what a surgeon would make) And if you ever made to "partner" in these firms, salary plus bonus often exceeds one million per year.

    • @rhinsl5740
      @rhinsl5740 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But in Hong Kong, the situation is kind of opposite. Usually a surgeon make much more than a lawyer.

      US college tuition is even more expensive than UK, especially the elite private colleges. Tuition is 55K + 65K a year now. My son went to top 10 private college a few years ago, $55K a year. He is now in top 14 law JD, tuition is $210K for 3 years. Plus meal and room expenses!

      Top 14 law graduate will get associate job, starting pay ~ $200K+ a year. A regular job in Silicon Valley for undergrad hire is about $100K a year

    • @Meandaddy
      @Meandaddy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@monicaw6247 hmmm... not always, at least a good 50% of the t14 students don't get into BigLaw, some by choice but some simply doesn't have the grade or just didn't do well in the interviews. As to Silicon Valley, engineers and CS majors often do get those $100k plus jobs. But that also is no guarantee. When the economy is good, there are plenty of opportunities. But if US economy softens, then the job market for first year grads could be very challenging.

    • @Meandaddy
      @Meandaddy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@monicaw6247 Congrats. What year is he in? The 2L summer associate job is very critical as that is when the "BigLaw" selects its future candidates. Even he doesn't do BigLaws, in-house still pays very well. And he has the inspiration to become an activist/lobbist or even politicians, then the DA route could also lead to great future. Case and point: VP Harris - she didn't graduate from T14 and she didn't even pass the BAR the first time and she didn't make to BigLaw. But she went the DA route and today, she is the VP of USA. Like Obama, she will make tens if not hundreds of millions after she "graduates" from the White House.
