  • Leica has released a brand new firmware update to the M11 which fixed some issues and added new features. Today I'll be sharing those updates and also sharing a little bit of my editing and printing with these files so far. Should I have gone with a M10 Monochrom instead? Let's talk about it!

    I’ve been shooting an M9 and an M9M for over ten and seven years, respectively. The M9M is the best camera I’ve ever owned. I was a black and white shooter before and now w the M9M I can shoot in pure BW, old school w filters. Maybe someday I’ll trade up, but for now im very happy.

    Your videos absolutely are inspiring. I’ve owned Leica film and digital cameras off and on for many years. I last had the M10 Monochrom as well as an SL2. I watched your M11 videos, including the first look video from last January, many times while considering buying the M11. Your most recent videos helped me decide to take the plunge, and I could not be happier. Like you, I don’t miss the traditional bottom plate (I dropped one on pavement once and almost had to be sedated…), and the combination of the much improved battery life, USB-C charging, and internal memory are great features. More than anything, I love the image quality. By the way, I’ve had no lock-up issues whatsoever.

    A great little video Matt! I personally shoot most things in color on my digital and film cameras, whether that is Nikon or Leica but the beauty and directness of B&W is undeniable, I'm much closer to 50/50 than you are haha.
    I know you love your 35mm Summicron ASPH but you should have some quality time with the 35mm Summilux FLE. I wasn't even a 35mm guy myself and ever since I've got it - I struggle to take it off my camera, it's got the perfect size, weight, ergonomics, and most of all the image rendering is very pleasing and flattering while having modern resolution and minimal aberrations. Best of all, the prices on the version 1 are better than ever and the silver ones aren't brass so they're as light as the black finish as well, unlike the (spectacular) 50 Summilux ASPH.
    I love to set it up without the hood and just the finishing ring and UV filter, that set up has served me well for several months now. There's always more joy to be had with that amazing camera you have there in the M11! Now to try and afford one myself...may 2023 bring on good fortune.

    I agree with you with regard to M10 monochrome and the M11. I used the M10M for a year, I didn’t like the rendering and ended up with a pocket of filters. So I sold it and picked up an M11 and I so love it. The changes are fantastic. My favourite is high speed electronic shutter that allows me to use my fast lenses in bright light. But the most important for me is I love how I have total control of the colour to monochrome mix. I never bonded with the M10M but after a few weeks I am in love with the M11

    Great video Matt. All of the reasons you described, I chose the M11 as my first digital Leica. For me another reason was the ability to shoot colour when I need it, even though I prefer B&W. Honestly I couldn't afford to have a B&W Leica and a colour Leica, so the M11 is just right. Absolutely love this camera after shooting M4 for a while, and haven't touched my R5 for a long time, unless I need video or going to shoot in a mosh pit. Thanks for the heads up on the firmware :)

Also at some point point I want to get a digital camera because actually I have never shot with one. I plan on getting an M11 Monochrom, but I'll wait until the M12M version comes out first and the used prices go down. By that time, it will be yesterday's news, but it will still be new to me. 😉 I just got the M10M, and it really is all that. I'm very excited about the results I'm getting with this camera right now. Digital monochrome is a thing, and it's awesome. Even the digital noise looks beautiful, and this camera showcases classic lenses in the best possible way. I may have been skeptical about Leica Monochrom in the past, but after actually using it, I'm certainly not on the fence anymore. In the right hands, it's an invaluable artistic tool.

      Another M11 owner here. I think I have a similar problem -- after just updating to Firmware 1.6. After updating, every time I turn on the camera, it reverts back to ISO 2000 (with ISO dial set to M) and shutter settings always revert to electronic shutter (as opposed to mechanical or hybrid). I will also write to Leica and see what they say...

      I got mine after much trial and error again halfway to work through a trick.

      @mattdayphoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      No issues for me, but when the camera is turned off, the sensor is covered by the shutter. So any time I change lenses, I turn the camera off and never really worry about it. I don’t believe the M10 line of cameras were like this, if I remember correctly.

    • @tofulosophy
      @tofulosophy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattdayphoto correct, the M10 line only opened the shutter when taking an image. I tend to leave my camera on when walking around. If I had an M11, I’d be shooting at 15MP for the expanded DR and because I find 16-20 MPs my sweet spot, one of the reasons I keep a Nikon Df around.
    Love that doorway photograph!!

    • @Kevon420
      @Kevon420 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mode is 18MP (not 15) and you really don't get expanded dynamic range, that's mostly for JPGs in the 36 and 18 megapixel modes. If you use 60MP DNGs and bring up the shadows in post, all tests point to the DR being essentially the same in the final photograph. The biggest difference is that the buffer is being bigger in 36/18 modes over 60, which is nice for the few situations you'd need that with an M camera. The sweet spot for me would be 36MP, enough resolution for slight cropping but less storage space used, bigger buffer, and so on.

    • @gottanikoncamera
      @gottanikoncamera ปีที่แล้ว

    • @mattdayphoto
      @mattdayphoto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're shooting wide open regularly and especially in close distance, you'll definitely have to shoot carefully but I think that would go for any M. I don't know what kind of differences there are if any in the calibration thresholds of the different M cameras. Sometimes I think it's the fact that I notice the sharpness difference in a digital file compared to a film scan where the grain can mask some of that softness at times.

    I bought the M11 about two months ago, and it would lock up on me almost every time I was using it…super frustrating given the price tag. Since the latest firmware was released, I have not had the lock up issue (to my relief). Aside from the lock up issue, it works flawlessly. I take it everywhere with me. I do hope other M11 users still having the lock up issue take a trip to their nearest Leica store since the warranty on the M11 can perhaps provide a new camera, or a repair. Also, Leica does seem to pay close attention to customer feedback, so there are options out there for those still having that issue.

      Hey Pablo, how did your lock up? Mine did it two weeks ago where the back LED light came on when I turned it on and never turned off and the camera was unresponsive. I had to take out the battery, recharge it and then turn it on without the lens to have it work again. Since then I haven’t had issues. I bought the new Godox TTL trigger for Leica and TTL does not work on my M11. only works in manual mode. Perhaps it is for the SL2.

      @@j5daniel182 I’d double check the compatibility list on their website but at launch I believe the m11 was left out, I’m sure they’ll update it to work at some point.

      @@j5daniel182 so I just figured out why it wasn’t working for me, I was on the wrong firmware update for the strobe. Once I opened up a new one with the current firmware (1.3 ad400pro and 1.1 xpro II L) HSS works with TTL and on manual mode. Gonna set up some shoots to make a video on this kit ☺️🤘🏽.

    The funny thing is that i shoot 99% BW and probably should have gotten the 246 instead of the 240, but with my setup (classic metering no live view, Cobalt CCD Monochrom) I really really like MY M240...every scratch, brassing, etc. and would have a hard time giving it up. Now, I wish I could prove this, but the M11's resolution and dynamic range coupled with Cobalt's Monochrom emulation will probably give you as good or better results than an M10M. The only thing the M10M might have is better high ISO performance, but I would love to see how DxO DeepPrimeHD evens things out. Somebody should do that test. :P
    My point is, finding a setup that works FOR YOU is key. It might be the USB...it might be HAVING a bottom plate, and it may be a collection of little things, but it's joyous to find that so you can concentrate on the frame.

      This goes to show how far down the rabbit hole I’ve yet to go down because I don’t know anything about Cobalt or their emulations. Haha. Appreciate the tip, I’ll look into it!

    I have read or heard that the M11 really needs the latest lenses to get the most out of the camera (mp) - what’s your experience?

    • @jackpowell2093
      @jackpowell2093 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had no issues with any of my lenses resolving the sensor on the M11. My 50mm Summicron V4 (1979), 35mm Summicron ASPH V1 (1996), and Canadian 90mm Summicron (1980) are all fully capable of reaching the camera's potential. I think complaints are a mix of Leica encouraging users to buy their newest lenses, and users having difficulty focusing accurately with a rangefinder.

      I can’t offer much experience there as I’ve only tested my two lenses, both modern lenses. If I get my hands on some vintage glass (maybe a sponsor could help us out there..) I’ll see what I can make and share! ❤️

      Can’t deny that. I don’t know what goes on within the company and the respective departments, but being a much smaller company, I’m sure the time and number of people working on it plays a big role.

    Okay, hear me out. In regards to high speed flash sync as a firmware update- there isn’t enough firmware in the world to suddenly change the speed of light.
    If I’m shooting in the field, I will never notice the difference between 1/100s and 1/1000s as far as my personal, neurological reaction time.
    I feel like they must be forcing the camera into something like a 1/100s shot with the physical, mechanical shutter and then taking a(faster than) 1/125s (or whatever flash sync is) shot with digital shutter tech.
    This leaves a bad taste in my mouth if true. Kinda dishonest if you ask me. But also, we are a dumb species and marketing lingo makes a difference whether I like it or not. So I’m torn.
