Throwing knife story: I HAD 3 Smith and Wesson throwing knives. I was in my backyard last month throwing them at trees. I threw one and it hit the ground and I never found it. My family and I spent over 3 hours looking for it so we didn’t hit it with the lawn mower. We’ve mowed the entire lawn probably like 5 times since I lost it. It is gone. The lawn ate my knife. THE LAWN ATE IT.
Yeah well that's what you get when you don't feed your lawn. It just wants your love, yet you're neglecting your baby lawn. It only wants your affection, but the only thing you ever give it is a trimming. Maybe it doesn't want a trimming. Maybe it just wants a hug. And maybe if you gave it that hug, it would gladly give you your knife back.
I’m starting my collection and am looking into purchasing a fixed blade that Will last a while could u recommend me a solid fixed blade to many to choose from
Manny Esee knives are a good company if you are looking for a camping bushcrafting knife, but i like Tops knives more because they have more variety of fixed knives from camping to self defense.
My neighbor had this little Kershaw folding knife he found in a parking lot. He was telling me how rugged and tough Kershaw knifes were. He decited to demonstrate this by throwing the knife at the vinyl floor. He did it about 4 times without a problem, each time sticking into the floor. The 5th time the tip of the blade broke off into the floor. The look on this dudes face was priceless.... He couldn't believe a Kershaw knife would break like that. But of course if you abuse any knife like that it will fail eventually. HAHA what a dummy!!

I've made a habit of learning any skill that isn't a massive time investment while I can, as long as I find it cool. Knife throwing was one of these. An interesting phenomenon is when throwing a knife at a log target, it can rebound by sort of sesawing off the top and come back at you with pretty much the same force as the initial throw. Point is I've dodged more knives than I care to admit.
Mason Dummer I saw a dumb father throwing his knife onto a coconut tree with his toddler son walking near the tree he was throwing at. Before I could tell him off about how he disregarded safety the knife bounced off the tree and sliced a deep 4” gash on his son’s left thigh. This happened on an island with no medical facility nearby and the son was bleeding badly. I wished I could help but I wasn’t into knives then and did not carry a first aid kit like what I do now. So much for a dumb f**k.
Thank you for an episode focused on fixed blade knives, I appreciate it. One thing I would really like to see is an episode on tactical/combat/fighting style, full size(blades of 6"+). I've not been able to find a past episode on this specific class of knives on any of your past videos. Also, addressing the most effective ways to carry these, both concealed, as well as open carry applications.

Not a "throwing" story as such. But when I was first learning aerials with my Microtech Balisong I tossed it and when I caught it it was not "right" and my hand hit it just right to where the blade spun back towards me and stuck me in the chest. Required 2 stitches to close but it was cool
No joke, when I was forward in AFG (shout out to FOB Salerno) we hard a hard time getting a grill going with the local charcoal (literally burnt wood, not briquettes) so I convinced the guys to splash some JP-8 on it. 8ft column of fire later we had some tasty, slightly kerosene flavored, burgers.
Honestly I carry a mora 510 or 546 every day and I love them. The 510 is for when I'm off hunting, prospecting or fishing and the 546 is for working. They are amazing!!!!

my dumb knife throwing story is I once threw a camillis fillet knife at my wall when i was bored and the blade stuck through electrical wiring so i got moderately electrocuted when i tried to remove it from the wall 😂
You would have shorted out the circuit I doubt very much you hit the wire and only managed to hit the hot conductor without anything else on a 14 gage wire Specially when the ground is in between the hot and the neutral
I do love it when you guys give fixed blades some love. I switched to fixed blade carry and I havent carried or bought a folder in 2 years. I generally carry a Swiss Army Knife and a fixed blade every day. My general rotation is Esee Izula in a Cline sheath, Esee Candiru, Mora Eldris and occasionally Ill carry larger knives like an SRK or an old Browning Hunting knife. Generally Id say my Izula / Candiru / Eldris get most of my pocket or belt time.
I LOVE fixed blades. More would definitely be cool. My dream job would be to work for BHQ, but I would probably just be working to pay off my knife bill.. It would be like a junkie working in a pharmacy..not a good combination, lol.

Just an issue to clarify: according to Mike Stewart, from Bark River, the "rooster" jimping on some of the Bravo model knives (there are Bravo models with a regular jimping or no jimping al all -- they call them "rampless") is a requirement from the SFs, their primary client , to help on detail work by pressing one's thumb on the front jimping. Back in the '70's I decided to throw my new Buck 110. Broke off about 1/2". Spent lots of time re profiling the blade with a hand stone. Still have it, still working.
When I was about 18 or 19 I was at my buddy's house and he had a dart board behind the bar in his room. I chucked a throwing star at it as our friend stood up and it grazed her ponytail. I didn't know she could run that fast. I almost didn't get away from her.

I was working in a warehouse about 6 years ago and I had just bought my cold steel counter point folder. It was a slow afternoon and the supervisor wasn’t around so we took turns throwing the knife into some boxes. This is when I did my stupid. I tried to do some quick JCVD throw straight from the pocket and knife skipped across the floor like a rock on the lake. The griv ex handle shattered near the base of the blade. Luckily that knife has liners so it was still usable. I ended up giving it to one of my friends that I worked with that was throwing it with me that day and he was ecstatic. He wasn’t a big knife guy until that point and now he has his own little collection.
I batoned some small pieces of 2x4 with my Bark River Auroura. Didn't know there where nails in the wood. I had three huge divits in the blade. I had to send it in for them to grind the blade back to get them out, as well as give it there "Spa treatment".
I EDC a fixed blade every day. I carry the Bawidamann Blades Muninn with an acid etched finish as my primary utility blade. I also occasionally carry a defensive fixed blade knife, though more often than not its just my firearm and a spare mag.
Yeah. You guys should do more fixed blade content. I like them better, they're stronger, and they don't get enough love (especially at on this channel for some reason)
My dumb that I did was pretty embarrassing. I was sitting on the toilet, bored out of my mind because my phone was dead. So I pulled my knife out and started studying it, just to keep myself occupied. I tested the balance point for my own curiosity. First I tested it on its side, then I tested it along the contour of the finger grip. It promptly rolled out of my hand and landed exactly on the tip on the tile floor, breaking off about 1/64 of an inch of the tip.
With one of my first Kershaw leeks, I got so comfortable with it. I loved the slim tip for fine work. It's not for throwing, but I knew if thrown perfectly it wouldn't snap (had done with previous leek). So on my first throw with this one it snapped about 1/3 of the knife off 🤷♂️
Im a big fan of the McNett Knives, and carried the Samish and Saturna daily for a few years, I never had a problem, but was always a little concerned with legality in some places, with them being double edged. Now my usual daily is the Esee Izula.

As someone who carrys 2 fix blades often and always has at least 2 folder and or multitool. My daily I always have a defensive knife on me. Any like a Ban Tang Shivworks Clinch Pick, Brous Blades MF-CEO, Colonel Blades LowVz, TOPS Rapid Strike, Benchmade ADAMAS, KaBar TDI Hinderer Hell Fire, and Ryan W Knives UTrap for personal defense with a handgun typically Glock, S&W M&P, or a CZ. I also will have a bag on me so I have a Multitool there but also a fix blade depending on where I'm going and possibly and Axe if I'm going camping hell I my truck I have Estwing Sportsman Special Edition in it with a Morakniv Garberg and an ESEE 6 also a Leatherman Wave Plus in my 3 day backpack. Not counting my daily carry backpacks or hiking/camping backpacks. I will have typically a small fix blade and a beater pocket knife. I don't like giving people my $100+ knives to watch them disappear. Much rather someone walk off with a ESEE Zancudo or OKC RAT mode 2 or Steel Will Cutjack Mini. I have changed my personal beater knife to Kershaw Emersons in D2. They are my most used knives. However, my most carried pocket knives are Benchmade 940-2 Osborne, Spyderco Paramilitary 2 S35VN, Spyderco Para 3 Maxamet, ZT Sinkevich 0470, and Giantmouse Ace Biblio in Micarta barely missing out the Microtech Combat Troodon Tan Aluminum Elmax and CRK Small Sebenza Insingo and Benchmade Mini Griptilian Sheepsfoot 20CV. My other knife is often my Grandfather's Parker Cutlery Co small lockback knife if not it I carry Moki Kronos lockback. If I don't carry a second pocket knife I carry a Leatherman Juice CS4 or Squirt PS4

I feel like we always see new shiny stuff, you should either have people send in pics of their heavily used knives or go around the office and find some loved and used EDC pocket knives your staff carry. I've broke many but would never even think of throwing a knife that expensive. Hell I wouldn't throw 9ne nice as that buck which was actually one of my favorites
That Dark Timber 1911 elite is actually Buckeye burl inlay in the handle NOT black ash. I have the same handle and liners on my Honey badger... My 1911 elite has BLACK ASH Burl with orange liners. Awesome collection btw. Sorry was just bothering me that he doesn’t know or got confused of what wood inlay is on his knife handle (a Dark timber at that lol)
Okay, I'll share a story. Some friends and I were throwing knives at a stump one day. I had a few beers and decided a nice monologue would further enhance the experience. I took three blades behind my back and yelled "feel my knives" and sent them flying towards the stump. All three missed the stump and instead ended up in the door panel of one of the guys truck that was a good few feet away from the intended target.
The best fixed blade I’ve ever had (still use it) has probably been the Esee Junglas-2. The full junglas is too long to be a camp knife (i mean depending on experience of who uses it, but talking purely straight up, barebones tasks) But take that 2-3 inches off and you’ve got yourself a do-all knife. Chop, baton, feather sticks, Choke up and you can do fine carving, but the big blade does limit it of course but that’s to be expected. It’s like the Esee-6 with the thickness of the 5, with the size of the Junglas minus 3in. Only down-sides are price and weight. Wonderful steel, holds an edge for weeks of steady work, but if you’re already humping 30-40lbs of gear it does add up. It is carbon steel so dry the knife just to prevent rust or get some sort of lube, but I wouldn’t bother Because getting lube/oil in your food tastes like ass. It’s still heavy. I can’t say enough about this knife. I saw an esee-3 in the vid and those are great little knives, but if we’re talking do-all, save your ass, SHTF knives? Junglas-2 all the way. The price is totally worth it. Plus they have a no-questions asked warranty. A combination of medium woods axe or larger hatchet, the junglas-2, a small fixed blade or folder (I’ve used a benchmade 580 or esee3/izula), and a good thick ferro rod? That shit has saved my life, twice.
I have an east german Kalashnikov bayonet that I used to love throwing at a tree. One day, the knife wasn't having it and bounced back and poked me below the knee. No scars.
I carry a Attleboro fixed blade pretty regularly. Haven't found a fixed blade I like more. I've had my eye on a few smaller Bradford's to EDC but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
My arsenal is small but effective. I have an axe, a Mora black and a Bark River Aurora in cpm 3v. I tend to look after my tools really well and never use the knives to baton, that's what the axe is for. Honestly, I've been through many knives over the years, but the Aurora in cpm 3v is just crazy, it does anything and everything extremely well. Luckily it wasn't my first knife, because if it was, I would be let down by every other blade I put my hands on afterwards.
I have a dumb knife throwing story. About five years ago I used to plant trees. I had a SOG Zoom 2 which I still have today. And I was cutting straps off a box one of my co-workers asked if it was a good knife. I said yeah this knife is pretty much indestructible. And I was decent at throwing knives. So I threw it at a palm tree and it's stuck in the palm tree and it was stuck open. So I had to ship it back to SOG to get it replaced and when I brought it to the post office they thought I was trying to rob them or something because I walked in with an open knife. You should call the post office before you walk in and present an open knife.
I have a bear grylls pro which is dull as hell but has become my knife I dont care about but so one day I had a pumpkin and from about 10 feet away threw it but the blade being about the length of the handle and lighter due to the hammer pommel, it did a no spin but with the pommel and hit the pumpkin with the pommel and flew back and hit me right where my femoral artery is by the belly of the blade, but it was so dull it didnt even cut me. All in all I got luck
the knife that started me into fixed blades is actually kind of a interesting/rare Ka-bar that was given to me by my grand father, the knife in question was a limited series knife that was sold from 1978-1980 its and old Ka-bar 1240 hunting/skinning knife, other than that i really don't know about it. my absolutely favorite fixed blade knife is the CRKT Hunt'n Fisch which reminded me of my fist fixed blade that was given to me. (which fun fact was the first knife i needed stitches from)
Picked up an Enzo trapper at Blade Show '19, brought it home, immediately threw it at the floor, broke the tip, and stood there silently for about five minutes.
When I was 10-12 I had my first pretty good knife (for a 10-12 year old) it was a redhead pivot DBS, so nothing special but it was a flipper with a big blade so I was hooked and I used it as a throwing knife in my back yard and no damage to the knife and I still have it, still holds a sharp edge with not too much damage, but I missed the board once and put a hole in my families RV and my family was not too happy to say the least

Just an issue to clarify: according to Mike Stewart, from Bark River, the "rooster" jimping on some of the Bravo model knives (there are Bravo models with a regular jimping or no jimping al all -- they call them "rampless") is a requirement from the SFs, their primary client , to help on detail work by pressing one's thumb on the front jimping. I recommend that interested viewers check out Mr. Stewart´s video on Bravo knives.
Back in the '70's I decided to throw my new Buck 110. Broke off about 1/2". Spent lots of time re profiling the blade with a hand stone. Still have it, still working.

When I was about 18 or 19 I was at my buddy's house and he had a dart board behind the bar in his room. I chucked a throwing star at it as our friend stood up and it grazed her ponytail. I didn't know she could run that fast. I almost didn't get away from her.

Dumb Knife Story. The day I got my custom Bark River Aurora in (cru-wear, scandi grind, with OD canvas green micarta and red liners). While drawing the blade from its super-grippy sheath I cut my finger like it was warm butter. I instantly dropped the knife tip first onto my basement tile, taking a nice 1/8 inch off the tip. This is still by far my favorite knife.

As always love the show, being a knife nerd myself I would love to have a jod like yours.
I was working in a warehouse about 6 years ago and I had just bought my cold steel counter point folder. It was a slow afternoon and the supervisor wasn’t around so we took turns throwing the knife into some boxes. This is when I did my stupid. I tried to do some quick JCVD throw straight from the pocket and knife skipped across the floor like a rock on the lake. The griv ex handle shattered near the base of the blade. Luckily that knife has liners so it was still usable. I ended up giving it to one of my friends that I worked with that was throwing it with me that day and he was ecstatic. He wasn’t a big knife guy until that point and now he has his own little collection.
I batoned some small pieces of 2x4 with my Bark River Auroura. Didn't know there where nails in the wood. I had three huge divits in the blade. I had to send it in for them to grind the blade back to get them out, as well as give it there "Spa treatment".
I EDC a fixed blade every day. I carry the Bawidamann Blades Muninn with an acid etched finish as my primary utility blade. I also occasionally carry a defensive fixed blade knife, though more often than not its just my firearm and a spare mag.
So jealous of your fixed blade knife collection! AWSOME selection of blades.
O1 tool steel is an excellent blade steel when heat treated properly. lots of folks wont agree, but lots of custom makers have used it for years.

My dumb that I did was pretty embarrassing. I was sitting on the toilet, bored out of my mind because my phone was dead. So I pulled my knife out and started studying it, just to keep myself occupied. I tested the balance point for my own curiosity. First I tested it on its side, then I tested it along the contour of the finger grip. It promptly rolled out of my hand and landed exactly on the tip on the tile floor, breaking off about 1/64 of an inch of the tip.
Got a crkt m-16 sf that I've thrown chopped down small trees with and split wood with and it's still in great condition

With one of my first Kershaw leeks, I got so comfortable with it. I loved the slim tip for fine work. It's not for throwing, but I knew if thrown perfectly it wouldn't snap (had done with previous leek). So on my first throw with this one it snapped about 1/3 of the knife off 🤷♂️
Im a big fan of the McNett Knives, and carried the Samish and Saturna daily for a few years, I never had a problem, but was always a little concerned with legality in some places, with them being double edged. Now my usual daily is the Esee Izula.

As someone who carrys 2 fix blades often and always has at least 2 folder and or multitool. My daily I always have a defensive knife on me. Any like a Ban Tang Shivworks Clinch Pick, Brous Blades MF-CEO, Colonel Blades LowVz, TOPS Rapid Strike, Benchmade ADAMAS, KaBar TDI Hinderer Hell Fire, and Ryan W Knives UTrap for personal defense with a handgun typically Glock, S&W M&P, or a CZ. I also will have a bag on me so I have a Multitool there but also a fix blade depending on where I'm going and possibly and Axe if I'm going camping hell I my truck I have Estwing Sportsman Special Edition in it with a Morakniv Garberg and an ESEE 6 also a Leatherman Wave Plus in my 3 day backpack. Not counting my daily carry backpacks or hiking/camping backpacks. I will have typically a small fix blade and a beater pocket knife. I don't like giving people my $100+ knives to watch them disappear. Much rather someone walk off with a ESEE Zancudo or OKC RAT mode 2 or Steel Will Cutjack Mini. I have changed my personal beater knife to Kershaw Emersons in D2. They are my most used knives. However, my most carried pocket knives are Benchmade 940-2 Osborne, Spyderco Paramilitary 2 S35VN, Spyderco Para 3 Maxamet, ZT Sinkevich 0470, and Giantmouse Ace Biblio in Micarta barely missing out the Microtech Combat Troodon Tan Aluminum Elmax and CRK Small Sebenza Insingo and Benchmade Mini Griptilian Sheepsfoot 20CV. My other knife is often my Grandfather's Parker Cutlery Co small lockback knife if not it I carry Moki Kronos lockback. If I don't carry a second pocket knife I carry a Leatherman Juice CS4 or Squirt PS4
Hey @bladehq I’d love to see some heavily used EDC knives. I feel like we always see new shiny stuff, you should either have people send in pics of their heavily used knives or go around the office and find some loved and used EDC pocket knives your staff carry. Loved the kalashnikolv video, I wanna see more heavily used tools
I used to work in a warehouse and on our slow time we would set up boxes in our warehouse and throw whatever knife I brought got in that day. Haha someone next once chipped a tip.

That Dark Timber 1911 elite is actually Buckeye burl inlay in the handle NOT black ash. I have the same handle and liners on my Honey badger... My 1911 elite has BLACK ASH Burl with orange liners. Awesome collection btw. Sorry was just bothering me that he doesn’t know or got confused of what wood inlay is on his knife handle (a Dark timber at that lol)

Okay, I'll share a story. Some friends and I were throwing knives at a stump one day. I had a few beers and decided a nice monologue would further enhance the experience. I took three blades behind my back and yelled "feel my knives" and sent them flying towards the stump. All three missed the stump and instead ended up in the door panel of one of the guys truck that was a good few feet away from the intended target.
The best fixed blade I’ve ever had (still use it) has probably been the Esee Junglas-2. The full junglas is too long to be a camp knife (i mean depending on experience of who uses it, but talking purely straight up, barebones tasks) But take that 2-3 inches off and you’ve got yourself a do-all knife. Chop, baton, feather sticks, Choke up and you can do fine carving, but the big blade does limit it of course but that’s to be expected. It’s like the Esee-6 with the thickness of the 5, with the size of the Junglas minus 3in. Only down-sides are price and weight. Wonderful steel, holds an edge for weeks of steady work, but if you’re already humping 30-40lbs of gear it does add up. It is carbon steel so dry the knife just to prevent rust or get some sort of lube, but I wouldn’t bother Because getting lube/oil in your food tastes like ass. It’s still heavy. I can’t say enough about this knife. I saw an esee-3 in the vid and those are great little knives, but if we’re talking do-all, save your ass, SHTF knives? Junglas-2 all the way. The price is totally worth it. Plus they have a no-questions asked warranty. A combination of medium woods axe or larger hatchet, the junglas-2, a small fixed blade or folder (I’ve used a benchmade 580 or esee3/izula), and a good thick ferro rod? That shit has saved my life, twice.
I have an east german Kalashnikov bayonet that I used to love throwing at a tree. One day, the knife wasn't having it and bounced back and poked me below the knee. No scars.
Lately I've been carrying a Nemesis 2-zero. It's a tiny knife, but I love it for my EDC.
I carry a Attleboro fixed blade pretty regularly. Haven't found a fixed blade I like more. I've had my eye on a few smaller Bradford's to EDC but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

My arsenal is small but effective. I have an axe, a Mora black and a Bark River Aurora in cpm 3v. I tend to look after my tools really well and never use the knives to baton, that's what the axe is for. Honestly, I've been through many knives over the years, but the Aurora in cpm 3v is just crazy, it does anything and everything extremely well. Luckily it wasn't my first knife, because if it was, I would be let down by every other blade I put my hands on afterwards.
I have a dumb knife throwing story. About five years ago I used to plant trees. I had a SOG Zoom 2 which I still have today. And I was cutting straps off a box one of my co-workers asked if it was a good knife. I said yeah this knife is pretty much indestructible. And I was decent at throwing knives. So I threw it at a palm tree and it's stuck in the palm tree and it was stuck open. So I had to ship it back to SOG to get it replaced and when I brought it to the post office they thought I was trying to rob them or something because I walked in with an open knife. You should call the post office before you walk in and present an open knife.
I have a bear grylls pro which is dull as hell but has become my knife I dont care about but so one day I had a pumpkin and from about 10 feet away threw it but the blade being about the length of the handle and lighter due to the hammer pommel, it did a no spin but with the pommel and hit the pumpkin with the pommel and flew back and hit me right where my femoral artery is by the belly of the blade, but it was so dull it didnt even cut me. All in all I got luck

the knife that started me into fixed blades is actually kind of a interesting/rare Ka-bar that was given to me by my grand father, the knife in question was a limited series knife that was sold from 1978-1980 its and old Ka-bar 1240 hunting/skinning knife, other than that i really don't know about it. my absolutely favorite fixed blade knife is the CRKT Hunt'n Fisch which reminded me of my fist fixed blade that was given to me. (which fun fact was the first knife i needed stitches from)

Picked up an Enzo trapper at Blade Show '19, brought it home, immediately threw it at the floor, broke the tip, and stood there silently for about five minutes.
When I was 10-12 I had my first pretty good knife (for a 10-12 year old) it was a redhead pivot DBS, so nothing special but it was a flipper with a big blade so I was hooked and I used it as a throwing knife in my back yard and no damage to the knife and I still have it, still holds a sharp edge with not too much damage, but I missed the board once and put a hole in my families RV and my family was not too happy to say the least
