You may or may not have found out that the airport in Udon Thani was once the primary base from where B52s took-off during the Vietnam war. It still has the longest runway in Asia.
You never know exactly what you'll come across up there.
One day, 15 years ago, I was riding in the Udon countryside on a deserted back road in the middle of no-where, I had over-estimated my gas supply...A couple of sputters and the engine quit. It was about as hot as your ride in this episode. About 2 hours and 3 or 4 km of pushing later, I hadn't seen a single person or vehicle. I was dying of the heat. I rounded a bend and off to the side in a rice paddy was one of those bamboo shelters rice farmers use for breaks and meals. There was a very old Thai lady just sitting on the platform, watching me struggle by. I assumed there was no way to communicate with her so I just trudged along.
"Wassa matter, Sonny...you run outta gas ?"
I heard it but I didn't believe it...maybe I was loosing my mind.
"Come on over here" I got a bit of gas under this shed" I was truly dumbfounded.
She went under the shed. Turned out there was one of those 2 wheel tractors under there and she came back out with a soda bottle full of gas.
"This'll get you to the next town."
Turned out she had lived in Texas for 25 years. She had worked at the USAF base in Udon during the war, married an American sergeant and they had owned a convenience store just outside of Laredo. They didn't have kids and when he died, she'd sold everything and moved back to the family land in Udon...where we were sitting. She wouldn't take any money for the gas, scolded me for being so dumb as to run out in the first place, warned me to be careful of Thai women and sent me on my way.
As I said; you never know what you'll run across up there.

i was born and raised a little village in Udon. I remember when i was growing up they just had dirt roads, no one owned a car and the nearest super market was in the city 2 and a half hours away. Now roads are tarmac and theres a seven eleven about a 20 min drive away and a few people in my village have been able to afford cars and internet is everywhere. things have changed so much in just 12 years! they also make these banana leaf dragons and during winter you can see hundreds of road side stalls selling them for a famous floating temple deep into the north of Udon.

I would advise you to wear a pair of lightweight motorcycle gloves to keep the sun of your hands and protect you from gravel rash if you should drop the bike. Been riding bikes for nearly 60 years in Europe and SE Asia and speak from first hand experience. Your right Udon Thani is not a tourist town, but great for oldies. Interesting videos. Cheers

@@CBMedia404 When I was serving in the Army in Singapore during the 1960s i dropped my bike on some gravel. I was doing about 5mph - flip flops, shorts, T shirt. Every toe and and the palms of my hands slid on the gravel - imagine how that felt. I gave a pair of summer gloves to my mates wife - they live in Udon Thani - she has not taken to wearing them. Great trip you are doing, stay safe.

JIm Rowson Great advice! I told Chad 2 videos ago to get gloves. I’d also advise him to get a mesh motorcycle jacket as they are cool once the air comes through. “It’s too hot” is no excuse for not wearing protective gear. I hope he has a proper license and insurance as well. Not planning for an accident is a very very costly mistake.

I was supposed to be travelling to Thailand next week and going to isaan for a visit but cant because of the lockdown. Your videos have been a little dose of happiness through this trying time. Loving the series!!

It’s always pleasant to see the smiles and the simple way of Issan life in the village. I still have many relatives who live in the provinces of Thailand. Good job Chad. You inspired me to consider my own motor bike tour one day 👍🏻. And be safe on your epic journey. I’ll be following!

Excited to watch the next episode and hear your thoughts on Khon Kaen. It's one of my favourite cities in Thailand. It's right on the border of Issan and in my opinion progressing in the right way and brining the rest of Issan with it.
10 years ago it was the only place in Thailand I ever saw doing Random Breath Testing to curb drink driving.
