It's been done to death a million times since, but never forget that Scorsese had this aesthetic down cold. He had his finger so firmly on the pulse of being able to pick the absolute perfect song to go along with these amazing shots in his films. I've seen Goodfellas countless times now and this scene never fails to give me the chills. Perfection.
I always get chills at his expression from 0:18 to 0:21 as soon as he does his little eyebrow twitch. Like you can see the gears working in his head of what he’s going to do and how happy he’ll be to get rid of his problems.
Nicholas Pileggi (the guy who wrote the screenplay) told somewhere Marty said to him '"put in Cream" when he came to this scene on paper. i.e. he was thinking with music as he was reading the play.
this scene is so good. It kind of mirrors the jumpin jack flash scene in Mean Streets. This time instead of De Niro being watched, he’s the one watching.

This entire scene was the most stomach knotting, on edge scene in the film. I could hardly breathe. De Niro is the master of the killer gaze...fabulous!
Masterful use of eyes. At 0:16, De Niro's just looking, thinking. Then, he glances down. His eyebrow twitches just a bit... he glances back up, and there's a new spark in his eyes. One that says he just decided to kill Murray.
Everything about this scene is stupid simple, but yet (and, hey) it's mother-per-fucking-fection. For Marty and Bobby, it takes only one shot (over half way through the movie) to let the audience know that De Niro is the movie's villain.
Not even lying, this is one of the most intimidating scenes in movie history. That one look says a WHOLE lot, especially when you know the lifestyle that these guys live in.
Till this day in my opinion the greatest film to grace this earth, everything was done flawlessly. The script, the shots, the scenery, the aesthetic, the music, the dialogue, cast, everything!
I still remember the first time I saw Goodfellas back in the early 90s. I didn't understand the significance of this scene but I remember it stuck in my mind. It's not obvious the first time you see it what this means, but there's just something about this scene that grabs your attention.
I love the research De Niro put into this role, he asked Henry Hill and also the person De Niro's character is based on (Jimmy Burke) about how he would do things like hold his cigarette, how he walked, and even learned from Jimmy Burke himself how he poured his ketchup so he could do it the same way. (Jimmy put ketchup on EVERYTHING.)
Amazing. Such good acting. The simplicity and complexity of communicating and conveying a thought or an emotion just looking at his eyes. Without saying a word. Great Directing, great editing and camera work. Amazing Cinema!
@0:25 that soft nod from Jimmy told you everything. He was going to whack Morrie no matter what. If Morrie told his wife about the money and still didn't receive it, Jimmy had a suspicion that Morrie and his wife would turn and go to the police if Morrie didn't get part of it. Jimmy had enough of Morrie hassling him about it and didn't want to risk it so he had Morrie murdered. Life in the mafia is scary and brutal
You are allowed to feel anything you want. It’s a free country. But you are not entitled to any opinion other than, Deniro said more with his eyes in this scene than the rest of the actual dialogue of the film combined.
It's only natural that as a gangster, Jimmy was already a bad guy. I mean really they all were, cause again, they're gangsters; what else are they supposed to be, good? But this scene? This is where he became a villain.
When Scorsese was writing this scene with his co-writer he suddenly smiled and yelled Cream! Write down Cream on the script! He knew this music was perfect and could picture it in his head
