I grew up watching Benny Hill and in the late 70's I went to live in California and one station started showing old reruns late at night. Almost no one had heard of Benny Hill in America but I remember people being totally blown away by it and it soon had a cult following. He pushes everything to the edge and was a master of suggestion. He had to get his work past the censors and there was a vocal puritan crowd always in the press in those day calling for censorship and attacking his work. So glad you discovered him.
He will bring you much joy as the decades roll by and you suddenly see it again.

Benny Hill really was a comedy genius for his time, but his energy shown on camera, which led to such a successful career, was just a ‘persona’ - in real life he lived a very modest & frugal life, struggled to maintain a relationship, and passed away, alone, and in a non-descript flat (apartment). He had stacks of cash (that ultimately went to his nephews & nieces, as he had no children) but the money didn’t buy him happiness…
    Funny guy, tragic backstory…

He also only ever asked one Woman to marry him, but he did it in such a way as she did not know if he was serious or not. I forget her name now but she has appeared in one of the documentaries about him. He was ready with a joke in case she said no.
I don't think it was Sue Upton but he did spend a lot of time with her and her family and also Louise English too.
Look up the interview by her [English] when he came to the opening night of one of her plays. She says herself "he [Benny] came backstage afterwards and it was like he did not want to leave", very prophetic as not long afterwards, Dennis Kirkland, his producer found him dead.

One of the bawdiest comedians of his time, but the epitome of a gentleman in real life. One part of the Benny Hill Show that is often forgotten are the comedic songs he used to perform. The most famous of these was "Ernie, the Fastest Milkman in the West" but there were several others including "In the Garden of Love". They were cleverly written and compared well with the Two Ronnies who were well known for their comedy song routines.

I still have some Benny Hill Recordings on Vinyl. I think he recorded for Pye at one stage a song called "Transistor Radio". The other one he did was called "My Garden Of Love"

Benny Hill was part of our staple diet in the late 70’s and into 80’s in Britain. It died out when alternative comedy came along. No one wanted to watch Benny hill anymore thinking it was too old school and sexist. Then he passed away in early 1990’s. I loved it and still do. That’s the famous actress Kathy staff the other wife near the end. Great British actress.

Benny Hill's show wasn't televised locally in the early 70s but I lived near the Ontario border which had TV stations that did. His show was on after midnight. The Big 3 local stations often signed-off just after the late news or Johnny Carson, so all we had to watch were British comedy and sci-fi shows like Benny Hill, Monty Python's Flying Circus, and Doctor Who for all of us night owls. Good Times, indeed!

Thank you so much for that. I'm UK and grew up watching Benny Hill but I've never seen that before. The actress who plays the neighbour's wife is the late Kathy Staff. She is more famous for playing Norah Batty in The Last of the Summer Wine where she plays a severe, no nonsense older lady. Compo, a male neighbour, is attracted to her and her 'wrinkly stockings' but Norah just chases him with her long sweeping brush which just makes him fancy her more

Benny Hill was a top notch exponent of what was called, 'saucy comedy.' Nothing vulgar or crass, but a little bit naughty and/or suggestive. Enough for the adults watching to get the gist of what was being eluded to, but not enough for any kids watching to want to start asking questions! The visual element was enough for them to find it funny. He was top billing on ITV throughout the 70's and 80's, until the PC sensibilities crowd came along and basically kicked him out for being, 'sexist.' Something that affected him greatly and ultimately led to his demise.
I like this particular sketch as the expected outcome changes a lot. He thinks he's going to get off with a young attractive woman, then discovers she's the daughter, then when the other wife comes in he's mortified only to find out she caters to his other, 'needs', (beer and delicious food), and everyone ends up happy.

Benny Hill - Long Dry Summer (1975) "if you dare"
Ben Elton, who at the time was writing comedy, And with the comedians he wrote with and for, All of them would jibe and put down Benny Hill, Especially Elton wanted him off TV.
Funny how Benny Hills shows still live on and are loved by many, As for Elton , well :)

One of the best jokes ever was one Benny told.
A man was sick with the flu, but his wife had to go on a business meeting out of town. They agreed they stay in contact in case his condition worsened.
This is where a typo in a message can ruin a marriage. When she got to her business meeting and hotel, she texted him, "How are you feeling, dear?" He meant to type, "I'm not getting any better. Come home." But what he actually typed was, "I'm not getting any. Better come home".

One thing I've noticed is that it's very difficult to make really great comedy, like this. That's why Benny Hill was such a genius - this is, on it's face, "low-brow" comedy. But to make it so hilarious takes a very particular eye for what will spark a laugh.

Benny Hill was not taken out, unfortunately, for the amount of Popularity that Hill had he was overcommitted in terms of the number of TV shows, but he had very limited time to write new material. At the end, his shows repeated so much material the audience was sick of hi old routines. Ratings fell. No new shoes.

I found it hilarious then and it still is now. I always loved how most episodes end with him being chased by a mob. This scene reminds me of Married With Children. I could see this happening to Al Bundy easily.
