Doctor Who - Dalek 3D Model Timelapse - Blender Tutorial/Timelapse

  • A quick timelapse of the modelling process of the sort of Daleks I use in my animations.
This one was modelled after a Mark 3 Shawcraft prop, which were used in pretty much all eras of the classic series - probably the sort of thing most people think of when they hear classic Dalek!
The plans were taken from the Project Dalek forum's free guides. If you haven't already, I strongly recommend supporting them. They do some incredible work.

I hope this video helped someone out there, and if not I hope it was at least entertaining to watch. If you have any further questions, feel more than free to comment them. I'm always happy to help!

This model, and all of my other models in the past were made using the Project Dalek plans as character sheets as opposed to using the measurements on them. I am aware that this is generally seen as a less acurate and tedious method of modelling, and I am attempting to apply my new understanding to future models. Thank you for the feedback!! 😊

Can I ask, do the shoulders and their collars sit perfectly atop the skirt or does the lower collar overlap the base by a few centimeters as on the classic series’ props?

how did you get the dalek plans alone? i cant download them on their own

‘Dalek Builders’ has all the plans from classic Shawcraft to modern ‘New Paradigm’ downloadable in PDF formats. Might require an account to download ‘em but it’s easy and it’s worth it 👍

Luckily not! Using the append tool in Blender, I'm able to move objects between files, so once I've modelled something, I can use it in any external scene I want 😀 thank you for the question, Space Cows

Random question: why not follow the dimensions?

Sorry, I don't think I understand what you mean by that 🙂

@@therealcrizz2719 Oh, it just seemed like you followed the pictures instead of the dimensions provided, was wondering if I was missing something

@@therealmccoy2351 Oh yeah, I was doing that hahaha, yeah sorry, I am an amateur 3D designer. I've been doing it for about 3 years. And beyond that I have never been able to work out how to cleanly import PDF pages or take screen grabs so that it would be easy to make proportionate. Thanks for the tip though. I'll try my best to look into how to be more accurate with my models!

Ah that explains why some bits look a bit weird. The drawings are only there for visualisation and aren’t entirely drawn to scale. The dimensions for the various parts are much more accurate.
That said the model still came out looking fantastic. 👍 I really must learn blender one of these days.

You know if you sped up the random rotations around your model and added a strobe effect you could make this even more annoying.
