  • This advert was made to launch the new Ford Corsair V4. One of the slogans for the marketing campaign was "The Car That is Seen and not Heard", and this ad emphasizes the "smooth, silent" driving experience that the glamorous young couple are lucky to have as they set out for a romantic day on the beach, leaving the noisy city behind.

    A Ford Corsair was used by Lord Lucan before he vanished forever, and also Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper had two. My late grandad had a 1965 V4 that lasted until it was scrapped in 1981. More attractive than the bigger square tank Mk4 Zephyr.

      that was because it's a Cortina, magic move by ford GB,but not sure what the original aim was? I once stripped out the interior of a 2000e and fitted it into 1963 Cortina dashboard and all it did'nt increase the value and it was a lot of work, no just unique!

    The Essex V4 suffered from from being a cut down v6 with the same cylinder angle as the V6.
    The V4 was eventually sorted into a reliable engine and continued for several years in the Transit after the Corsair was discontinued
    The actual body structure of the Corsair was the same as the Cortina.

    We had one of these when I was a kid. It was noisy and rusted quickly, but it did manage to tow our caravan to the south of France a couple of times for the family holiday. Reasonable reliable for its day, just a head gasket failure and a jammed starter motor in 5 years. Dad reckoned it was better than the Cortina because the metal was thicker!

      My dad had a 2000 automatic surely the most mismatched mating of engine and gearbox of all time it was far to undergeared would only top out at about 85 but the kick down acceleration was something else for a car of that time the tall 2000e manual gearbox as they called it calmed things down a lot it was such a good gearbox it was paired with many more powerful engines on the customising scene back in the day

      I can't agree with the comments about the engine. I've had six Corsairs - inlines and V's - saloons, estates, and a Crayford.
      The Crayford was the most unstable/skittish car I've ever had (although I put up with all its idiosyncrasies because of what it was) but the 2000E I had was the best car I have ever owned. It was the only car I've had that i would go out in with nowhere to go just because i enjoyed driving it so much. I took it up to 146,000 on it's original engine and would buy another one in a heartbeat.
      Sadly now though the prices have gone through the roof and my days of lying under cars welding chassis and floorpans up are behind me.
      I'd rather buy one with its issues sorted as a rough one would be a money pit.
      £500 for a wing these days if you can find one!
      I bought my first Corsair - a 1963 column change 1500 deluxe - off a dealer forecourt for £325!
      Happy days at 19 yrs old - a good job, single, and 4 cars legally on the road.
      Corsair, Cortina 1500GT, Riley Elf, and 2 door Escort Mk1 1300xl.
      I'd have about 15 grand now if I had them to sell!
      How times have changed.
      Scrapyard Saturdays to strip all the bits off the other Fords.
      Arrive with basic tools in big cantilever toolbox.
      Leave with a couple of quid's worth of paid for parts but a toolbox full of switches, trim pieces, and anything else that would fit.
      😀

    I always thought the Corsair was a strange model for Ford. Really it's just a Cortina with a different shell and a V4! My Dad had one in the early 70s, can't recall the version, but it was a 1700 I think? He was almost killed in it when he was hit by a drunk driver almost head on, on his way back from work one night. The steering wheel came up and back, hit him in the chest, broke ribs and his sternum, his left knee cap was almost torn off by the diecast lower dashboard, and his right leg was broken when pushed back by deformation of the right side body structure and pedals being forced back. He was in a bad way and had to be cut out from the wreckage. He was off work for about 6 or 7 months and his left leg was never the same. I went to see the wreckage and it was horrendous to look at, you would not have thought it possible for the driver to survive. No wonder so many people died in car accidents back then, the cars were death traps.

    Obviously the Advertising Standards Agency did not exist then. In the first 2 years of its life the Corsair was fitted with an inline 4 cylinder, 5 bearing version of the Kent engine, which was very smooth, quiet and reliable. Then Ford decided to fit this V4 abomination instead. V4s are inherently out of balance, so it was fitted with a balance shaft parallel to the crankshaft, driven off the crankshaft by a plastic gear wheel, which used to wear out rapidly. This shaft was supposed to stop the engine shaking about like a jelly by countering the out of balance forces, but it wasn't great, and the car felt rough to drive. It was nowhere near as smooth or reliable as the 5 bearing Kent, and it made no sense because the Kent engine remained in production for many more years, being last used in the Ford Ka in the early 2000s.

      So good that manufacturers still use them today? No, of course not.
      If a v4 was such a good idea then in today's quest for space in small cars manufacturers would have used them but they definitely do not, why not?
      A v4 is an inherently unbalanced engine, a stupid idea to say the least, that is why manufacturers today do not build them.

      @@MrGoogelaar Well sometimes you have to think outside the science (The Titanic was built by scientific principals) - these engines had character. .The "slant" 4 found in Vauxhalls of the time was supposed to be the most balanced of a 4 cylinder config..but these were just as 'rough'.

    • @MrGoogelaar

      @@Witheredgoogie The only character the Ford V4 had was blown head gaskets, failed timing gears that wrecked the valves and damaged engine bearings, the shaft that drove the oil pump worn away prematurely and caused oil starvation and hence damaged bearings.
      Apart from these problems and the vibrations the costs to use a V4 was considerably higher than that of an inline engine. Of course the mentioned problems were not all because it was a V4 but of other bad design etc. In short, quite a horrible engine.

      @Witheredgoogie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrGoogelaar Well they are all problems that a modern day BMW might suffer from and have done LOL .. a good one would certainly out last a Kent crossflow which was tired and ready to push up daisies at around 70K ..I had a Consul (Granada) V4 which had been a taxi, that old girl just soldiered on, god knows how many miles it had done, it's old pudding of gearbox, the Ford C4 autobox gave up before it did.. and probably would have still been going with a Borg Warner box..

    • @MrGoogelaar
      @MrGoogelaar 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Witheredgoogie A modern day BMW is not the epitome of reliability so let us not go there.
      Obviously you might find stories of a V4 here and there that was more reliable than the majority but it is too anecdotal to help the reputation of the engines.
      During the engine's life various improvements were made to try and sort the problems out, changes to the fibre timing gear and the oil pump shaft improved matters somewhat but the higher costs and vibrations of a v4 compared to an inline 4 were still major drawbacks, the v4 offered nothing more (exept being shorter) than an inline 4 and while plagued with problems that the inline did not have was part of its demise.
      Are you aware that Ford actually had two different V4 engines, a German built and a British built one? The German built engine was also used by Saab to replace their two stroke engines.
