Being fascinated by the mundane things is what makes childhood amazing. When I watch my 4 year great-nephew play I am constantly amazed how everything he sees and touches is simply awesome to him. A simple stick that we step over is a great toy to a child. Photography should bring that sense of amazement back. The way the light falls on things, the way the film will render it. Those things helps us create and that's what I love about photography.
Your nostalgia is contagious. I now live in Albuquerque and I've never been in England. I grew up in the suburbs of NYC, and the past is like a foreign country to which you can never return. Inevitably, everyone of us moves away. These photos and your monologue evoke all that. I absolutely adore this video and the rest of your work.

I loved it Roger. Quite beautiful but melancholic at the same time. Nothing like happy childhood memories. I wish that I could go back and photograph where I grew up, but it is over three and half thousand miles away, and on top of that for the last 43 years, I have been classed as persona non grata. In anycase, those 1.35 V Zinc/Air batteries may work, but they are a different size. The problem with LR44 battery is not just the wrong voltage. Mercury batteries supplied a constant voltage until the very last second, so the electronics depending on them worked consistently. LR 44s do not, they have a distinct fall off curve. They are quick to ban this and that, but forget that millions of pieces of equipment are depending on them and they offer no alternative, sadly. Good excuse for the likes of Fuji to kill off films blaming raw materials, but no one ever questions the toxicity of the materials that are used in the manufacture of these sensors and chips.
Thanks Lensman. I didn't know about battery curves! True what you say about modern electronics. Who knows! Hopefully I can get a converter and get the Yashica working without carrying a meter around.
Yes! Vindication. No one believes me when I say that dog poo was available in white in the 70s. I spent most of the 90s in Streatham and West Norwood and it’s good to see that not all of London has been gentrified out of all recognition. Always learn a lot from you videos and I love the care you take with the production values. Kate Bush was from Eltham? Who knew?

I enjoyed this very much. I've been lataly out of ideas what to photograph and this gave me some thoughts. Maybe it could be so simple to do some documentary photography about myself. Your content is constantly interesting and well made. Darkroom stuff is like cherry on top. Especially this episode 6×6 images were amazing, I should take my Rolleicord out more often. Great video. Those metal brackets in the wall, pretty sure they are commonly used on brick callings to stop the two end bricks falling off if they release from the mortar.

+1 for the Wein cell zinc air battery. Supplies the correct power to the meter and saves you having to recalibrate the meter for modern batteries. I used to use one in my Olympus 35RC, but then I stopped using light meters in general...

Love this channel, it fits with me, I have just got into film photography and have successfully developed three rolls of film, but not the fourth, Messed up big style today by reading the wrong timing for developing, ended up with a strip of completely clear film. Oh Well, on to tomorrow. Great trip down memory lane there, as a South London bald bloke of a very similar age, I love things like this, also loved the interaction with the bloke that asked what you were doing. I wish I had taken photos of where I grew up, but the flats were sadly demolished in 2000. I really loved the way you could create a connection with the smallest things like the door knocker that your mum polished every Sunday. Great stuff! My dad used to work in the telephone exchange down Well Hall Road.
That's next to the police station. BT. On Orangery Lane. As for your clear film it's possible you fixed it first. Check if you have edge markings. If you do chances are you didn't expose on the film. It can happen!
I use those batteries in my Canon Canonet 28. If you buy, remember to let them breath for half an hour before you put them in the camera. There are two stickers to remove first.

I'm your same vintage. I have shot film since I was about 8. A lot of what we take photos of, is triggered by where we came from.

This gives me a great idea. Would love to go to Jacksonville Florida (live in North Carolina now) and take photos of my neighborhood, schools etc.
I just sold my yashica 124G and used a Wien cell or the adapter you can get from the small battery company that converts a sr44 to 1.35 volts . . Both work perfectly and I found the light meter in the camera pretty accurate and got some lovely correctly exposed results . Really enjoyed your walk down memory lane Roger .

So cool to go back to your past!!! I was shocked when I went to the street I lived on in the 60s and saw how tiny everything was ,,, those two blocks to the bus stop was only about 10 houses!!!

Nice to see a great video about an area you know. One of the reasons I suscribe is I remember in another video you mentioned you come from Eltham, I grew up in and around Eltham too (and we used to holiday on the Isle of Wight!). Eltham High St is an integral part of my childhood (I'm guessing we're a similar age too), my sister still lives in Mottingham near the shops you photographed. I live near Hastings now. I've been considering a similar project, photographing places I've lived. It's an interesting approach concentrating on the details you remember from childhood, rather than just the house you lived in, that's really what makes up memories.

I love the idea of this video and will also do a similar project. I have a Bronica GS-1, I plan to load it with B&W and visit the area I grew up in. The area has gone from somewhere that was full of working class people and migrants to a very trendy area. A lot will have changed but I am hoping there will still be a lot there to photograph. Thanks for the inspiration!

Love Eltham I lived in Woolwich for a few years and Blackheath was always good for a photo op there was always something going on on Woolwich common or blackheath common in the summer
Usually the fair Jonny I remember. And fireworks. We used to bus it to woolwich to play on the ferry. My uncle lived on the other side.

Having watched this, I woke up in the middle of the night to decide that my next photobook would be about where I come from in Bexleyheath, so not far from you. I did my teaching degree at Avery Hill College, Eltham. Now living in Birchington, at the seaside. Thank you so much! Motivated and excited.

Great video and some really good shots. I can definitely relate to the experience of visiting where you grew up. I did that about 10 years ago and it was very surreal. Particularly since the house I grew up in burned down years before and they never bothered to rebuild so there was just a stone walkway to a large empty lot (it was a duplex so it had a large footprint). Sadly I did not have a camera on that trip.

I have several camera's that need the obsolete px625 mercury cell. For them i have 2 batt-adapt-US adapters. Those adapters take a SR 44 battery and the adapter reduces the voltage to what the mercury cel would give. I have a link, but youtube does not like me putting a link in a comment, so internet search for the type i mentioned ;) (hope this comment survives ;) ) SR 44 is prefered over LR44 as the SR 44 is silveroxide and has a similar discharge curve to the mercurey battery

The Yashica is quite easy to modify with an internal diode, there is plenty of room compared with most 35mm cameras. While effective this method doesn’t help with the slight inaccuracy due to the discharge curve of the modern battery that has been mentioned here already. A card full of SR44 batteries is available on Amazon for very little money so you can top up regularly

You have inspired me to do something similar and go back to the place I grow up before things change to much and document it and to the places I have the strongest memories and my happy places from the 70s & 80s

Went out to the location of the elementary (primary) school I went to in the early 90s recently and got some shots. Beyond the shape of the old broken asphalt drive, there are no signs that a building was ever there. Most of the small trees that were dotted around the school are still there, though larger now. But everything else is just a flat grassy field now. It was both sad yet serene. I swear I could still smell breakfast cooking in the cafeteria.
I'd love to have wandered around the old schools. My comp school was pulled down.
I've personally used the 'wein cell' zinc-air 1.35v batteries. They work well at the correct voltage and discharge the same as mercury ones so the meter is accurate throughout the battery's life. However they lose charge very quickly, even without use it's only a few months before they are dead. Some people use small battery adapters/converts, other have the circuitry modified with resistors to use modern lr44. I'm no expert but the safety and feasibility of both of these options depends completely on the camera model.
MR9 adapters are a much better solution in my opinion because it allows you to use cheapo LR44 batteries that you can get at any drugstore. They're so cheap that if there's any question whether they are good or not I just replace the batteries.

Mat-124 (non-G) owner here.
I'm using 675 hearing aid zinc-air batteries with an adapter (just a brass cup, a couple of quid on eBay), and this is quite enough for accurate metering. Those batteries don't last long once you've actuated them (you can count on a healthy 6 months, then you might want to replace it), but they're cheap (like £2-3 for 6-pack).
However, the meter in the Yashicas is a bit of a joke itself - the metering angle is too wide, so while it works fine for evenly lit scenes, you still want something better for more complicated light conditions.

Another great video, as always very interesting. I use a 1.35v Wien cell for the light meter in my SRT101 and it seems to work very well. I also have them in my hand held light meter no problems at all. Thanks, keep the videos coming!

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Hi Roger, I've had the battery in my SRT since May and shot about 5 rolls through it. I checked the voltage of the battery this morning using a meter (to be able to give you a realistic answer). It is still showing 1.35 volts, so I'm guessing it's still got a few more rolls life in it. I have seen Mercury batteries on ebay if thats the route you want to take, search by the battery number and put original in the search. I hope this helps. Cheers, Dougy

IIRC, you can use a Zinc air hearing aid battery, 1.4v isn't that far away from 1.35v.
Another great video sir! The best option for batteries by far are the mr-9 adapters you can get for cheap off amazon. That'll allow you to use cheap LR44s that you can get pretty much anywhere and they work perfectly in the 124G. Wein cells work too, but they're expensive and die quickly. Cheers!

Blimey. Just commented on another of your vids about recognising places around IoW... This one even more so. I am a Bexleyheath lad. My first job was in Andara when it was down Orangery Lane back in 91ish.
And I bet you went up Bexleyheath on a weekend and ended up in Zens Dartford or Moon & Sixpence, Welling ha ha (Great times)
Not a massive clubber but somehow ended up in Zens a few times. Moon and sixpence with all the other kids on a Friday and Saturday was a ritual.
Great video, Roger. It's great seeing where others grew up especially Britsih photographers. I was last home, when my Mom passed away in 2011. I took the chance to take some digital photos when home. The kids and grand kids will enjoy those photos .

I got the brass hearing aid battery converter which I used in my Yashica 124g but the internal meter was off. I use the converter in an Olympus RC 35mm whose light meter seems good now. I have a fantastic tiny Gossen Digiflash meter which goes in a trouser pocket and I made a decision to stick to no internal meter in my medium format machines. Pentax 67, Bronica ETRSi, Agfa Isolette II.
Makes sense. The Sekonic is great tool but sticks out me pocket ha ha

As for the batteries, I just use generic PX625a batteries. They go by different designations depending on the manufacturer but pretty much all have 625 in the name. I start every shooting day by checking the meter against Sunny 16 or a phone app light meter and adjust the ISO dial until it matches.

YOu can use a Weincell zinc battery in replacement for the mercury battery. You can also get an MR2 adapter and use an LR44 battery in the adapter. I prefer the Weincell but it does get used up quickly.

Agreed. If I wanted to take photographs of daily life London is where I'd go, the city. Many walks of life, interesting characters and no one cares what you're up to

Loved that vid, you clearly loved making it. I lived in Sidcup about the same time so know the place. And in those days Eltham had two rail stations, sure you remember.
They did Ray. On Westmount Road. My uncle owned the newsagents next to it. It was called Eltham Park South Station.
I don't know if it's the same battery, but my SRT-201 also called for a mercury cell. I bought a cheap alkaline replacement. It's almost exactly two stops off, compared to my app meter. I adjust the ISO accordingly so it works properly.
Got me curious about trying it, myself. I've seen the old place on google maps over the years, and other than my old house still standing, I don't even recognise most of it now. So much been knocked down and built new. Same has happened where I now live. But it's all happened over the years and I've got used to it all. Be interesting to go back and see any pictures people of the past had taken of this place, see if I recognise what it used to be. I know long before I was even born, there was a tramline running right outside my door. and underneath the tarmac, the original cobble still exists.
It's everywhere now. I drive sometimes up there and get confused because these big new buildings have erected and I think I'm lost! But I'm not.
You can order the original mercury batteries online in Russia. It's reliable I've heard. Otherwise buy an adapter and put in 675 hearing aid batteries (1,4 v)
I use the WeinCell MRB625 1.35 V in my Nikon FTN and it works fine however they don’t last long I get it from B&H Photo in New York

I used a standard button cell battery with my mat 124 g. The worker at the camera store I took it to said that the light meter would be over volted so the photos were a bit overexposed. Nice to have but not a necessity

Not really Jason. Only drove by there a few times over the years to stop and look at the house. This was the first time I have spent hours walking around there detailing stuff.

Hi I use a Wien cell with my Exakta Examat & my RTL 1000 and they work fine have tried the adapters but prefer the Wien call another good video thanks, Skateboards in the 70's are you sure Chopper bike's an Roller skates more like but then I grew up in Scotland in the middle of nowhere...maybe a time lapse thing
Skateboards were more popular where I lived, Chopper Bikes were very few cos they were expensive. I do remember making go carts though. That hill I showed, we got five on a chopper once going down there ha ha. couldn't fit a sixth on it.

It's possible you might be able to add a resistor to the meter so that you can use standard 1.5v batteries.

Great nostalgic photos Roger! May I ask something quite irrelevant? I noticed your backpack. Do you know what model it is and if it would fit a Mamiya RB67 and maybe an slr with 50mm lens, easily?
It's a K&F Concept. I don't know the model. But when I look online for a bag I look at the ones that can take two DSLR's then I know it's big enough.

Thanks for taking us on a trip down memory lane. I have seen some very nice pictures. Is your accent from London by the way? No offence, I like differences in languages and I am already happy to hear something different than American English 😉
Acros II is a wonderful film, it gives nice separations in the greens. I develop it in Ilfosol 3 1+14 which gives sharp negatives and nice contrast.
Did you already shoot the Ortho Plus? I found it really hard to focus on the grain of that film when printing, although I developed it in Rodinal which is not an fine grain developer at all.
It's South London Accent Uwe. London, although it seems small to the rest of the world, has different accents across the suburbs. I did actually talk about accents saying I have lost my deeper accent from living away but cut it out. The Ortho I did not get time to shoot. I have shot it many times before. It's a wonderful film. The acros is a wonderful film also. I find it more contrasty than the FP4. But thats all down to developing.
I wish I could remember the name of the company, but there is one that makes replacement batteries for those old mercury ones. I have on in my FTN.

You can use a 675 hearing aid battery in a cheap (dumb) adapter, cheaper than Wein Cells or you can use 625 alkalines. Some say it's not much difference. It's reflective anyway and you will be fooled more often than not.
Or you can go half fancy get a chipped adpter or full fancy and have the camera perrmanently converted to use alkalines. Not sure if it's worth it, you have a good light meter.

Hi Roger. Great video. You mentioned the dark room was cold. Does the cold temperature affect your chemicals? Do you reheat them or use them below 20 degrees?
Not really Brett. The chems do drop in temp and I can reheat them in the microwave which is in the shed also but I didn't yesterday. If the developer drops in temp it just takes a bit longer to develop and fix.
