- The Grande Dixence in the Val d'Hérens is the biggest gravity dam in the world. This massive dam in Switzerland is unrivalled with its height of 285 metres. The Grande Dixence, built from 1951-65, is a structure of incredible proportions. 200 metres thick at the base, 695 metres long and 285 metres high, six million cubic metres of concrete were needed to build it. The large reservoir holds 400 million cubic metres of water and collects the meltwater from 35 Valais glaciers, which is fed through 100 kilometres of tunnels.
The Grande Dixence can be visited and is the starting point for beautiful mountain hikes. A cable car runs from the car park and bus terminus up to the top of the Grande Dixence wall. The panoramic view of the Valais mountains and across the long lake is impressive.

I was very surprised by this huge dam. It is 695m long and took 65 years to construct... Thank you for uploading this very valuable video. Civil engineering works such as tunnels and dams in Switzerland are amazing.

Hoi Martin, danke fürs Video. Hat schöne Erinnerungen hervorgerufen. Im 8. Schuljahr sind wir mit der Schule von Sion den ganze Tag mit dem Velo hochgefahren und dann in 40min runtergesaust. Leider hatte ich keine Zeit mehr den See zu sehen, da wir zum Abendessen runter gehen mussten. LG Benjamin

Beeindruckendes Video. Die Staumauer ist ja noch gigantischer als die aus dem 007 Film "Goldeneye" gesehene Mauer aus dem Verzascatal.
Ja, diese Staumauer ist vieeeeel grösser als die im Verzascatal :-) Vielen Dank für den Besuch!
Die Grand Dixence ist die höchste Staumauer Europas. Bis 1980 war sie sogar die höchste der Welt. Unterdessen gibt es in China, Tadschikistan und Iran noch 9 höhere (wobei 4 davon sich noch im Bau befinden).
