When the original Nike Air Max debuted in 1987, it was the first shoe to showcase a large, visible Air-cushioning unit. In 1997, the Air Max 97 evolved the technology by placing an Air unit along the entire sole. Incremental steps followed, and now Air Max builds upon its nearly 30-year legacy with a leap: the Nike Air VaporMax, which pays off the full promise of Air - to provide lightweight, consistent cushioning that lasts.
The breakthrough came courtesy of new technologies that allow the Nike VaporMax Air unit to act as a standalone outsole. Where previous Air units had to be insulated by a secondary rubber layer for protection and improved durability, new innovation allows designers to incorporate the Air and exterior layer into one holistic VaporMax Air unit. And where previous units needed to be shaped with inflexible structural areas, the new unit can independently maintain its given form, with elasticity
Nike designs for athletes and performance first, which is why it wear-tested the VaporMax with the help of 350 people who in total ran 126,000 miles in the sneakers before turning them over to the public
For Kathy Gomez, VP of Nike Innovation, the VaporMax sole was an engineering challenge. "We had to totally reimagine how to make a shoe, as we went from a sort of Air mattress to these unencumbered tubes," she says. "The question went from 'How much Air can you put under your foot?' to 'How much Air do you need to put under your foot, and where?'" They also did away with the rubber outsole most sneakers have in favor of a plastic one made from a thicker version of the one they already make the Air bags with, which allowed them to make the sole more like one cohesive piece. In fact, Gomez says the plastic outsole is more durable than typical sneaker rubber, and even gives runners unprecedented traction
Like most of Nike's new running sneakers of late, the upper is made of a single piece of Flyknit fabric. While the ultra-lightweight knit may seem in contrast to the bulkier sole, the upper sits comfortably atop it thanks to what Gomez calls "swept pinch" edges, which curve up around the sides of the plastic footbed. "If we changed the sole a millimeter, it would have thrown everything off," she says. In the end, all that tweaking and attention to detail means the two parts actually look like they're in harmony. "They have to work together," says Andreas Harlow, VP and creative director of Nike Running. "Whatever we did with the upper had to be in service of the sole. When you look at it, you get this one sensation, but when you wear it you get something completely different."

I love the concept of that Vapormax. Until now I had no idea that there was a Vapormax that doesn't have a Flyknit upper until now. I seriously thought that all the Vapormaxes were made with Flyknit from the beginning. That Flyknit and more popular version looks way better. I really want a pair but I haven't been able to spare the 190 yet.
The black pair you are reviewing is my first pair of vapormaxes and I absolutely love them. The comfort on those are unlike any other shoe I own. I personally think boost isn’t as comfortable as a lot of Nike technologies as vapormax appears to be the better technology for me imo.

I got a pair of White vapormax 2 months ago and I stepped in mud. Let me tell you, it is almost impossible to clean them 100% I tried everything to clean them and the mud still visible between the midsole and the upper shoe.

Just got my first pair. The upper is amazing. Still getting used to the sole.
Just got my pair of flyknits. I thought it would take me awhile to get used to the feel but I was wrong. I love them and they are so comfortable. I went a half size up because my foot is a little wide. I was worried but I have Zero problems or issues with the air units, love walking on air. Nike has put too many versions with too many color ways out too fast, which is good for me. I got them $60 under retail. Very happy!

Wrong category for comparison. Vapormax against ultraboost more likely. NMD isnt even the flagship shoes from adidas. The NMD isnt as comfortable as the ultraboost. NMD is just for kids to show off looks but isnt comfortable at all.

Im interested in trying them , the price point makes it rough....and dropping 36 pairs of shoes every month makes it hard to budget in a pair. I would definitely like to try a pair....maybe Nike could let Nike app members a coupon so you could grab 1 pair for $150. Then i would be more interested.

I see a lot of people wearing the vapormax. I think they should cool down on the colorways though. I really like the look of the CS version though, but I don't need to buy anymore shoes right now and that's not going to make the cut with the color ways they have so far.
Vapormax utility are more comfortable. Very surprised by that since it has the same outsole. I think there's an extra layer of cushion. Give them a try.

QUICK Question: the 2 vapormaxes had me thinkin bout the ultra boost and the ST. I have both models, but have noticed that the ST has thick almost mesh-like Knit instead of the normal UB Knit. R they both primeknot tho??????
No Crease DeQuis Nah. Normal PK is non-breathable for running. Btw, Primeknit ranges from soft to corse, so I wouldn't care if something was PK or not.

Air max almost never pop. I have quite a few different Nike air models; none have popped!!
Nike will replace them if they pop. Just keep your receipt and it’s better if you buy direct from Nike
they’re crazy durable, way more than zoom units
