The Lockdown mummers 'Galoshins': via Zoom

Performed by students in the ‘lockdown Folklore class’ at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, taught by Margaret Bennett who re-scripted the play for the occasion. Cast: James MacIntyre, Joe Kinnear, Margaret Bennett, Allan McMillan, Oliver Joseph, Calum Brown, Finlay Frame Caitlin Forbes, Rosemary McMillan, Will Abbot, Maya Gilmore, Madeleine Price. The musicians are Josephine de Geer (flute), Emily Shields (guitar) and Catherine McGoldrick (flute). (Allan and Rosemary McMillan are guests from the Edinburgh Folk Club)
‘Galoshins’ was performed all over Lowlands of Scotland throughout the Christmas season, including Hogmanay, New Year, and in some places ‘Auld New Year’ on January 11th The ‘Lockdown Galoshins 2021’ is based on a version noted in Edinburgh by Robert Chambers in 1826, one from Peebles (printed in Robert Ford’s 'Children’s Rhymes & Games', 1904), some lines from F. Marian McNeill, 'The Silver Bough', Vol. 3, 1961, a tape-recording of ‘Galoshins’ recorded in Kippen, near Stirling 1971, with a few phrases from The Ederny Mummers in Co. Fermanagh.
