01 Rum Four Times a Day
Je m’en vas vous chanter une chanson
Une chanson menterie
Celle de paroles de vérité
Je vous parle de la vie ;
A rin-fo-ta-dilly anum
A rin-fo ta-dilly-ay
A rin-fo-ta-dilly a
And rum four times a day.
Drink a little drop, it's nice, sweet
Drink … make the mind sick
Let's go to the woods, doll to [eat] apples and hazelnuts
03 Mon coc fait cocilicou
Ma poule fait coc-que-daque
Mon coq fait cocilicou-cou-cou
Jamais je n’en serais jaloux
Mon coq fait cocilicou-cou-cou …
C’est pour un oie acheter
Mon oie fait coin-coin-coin
Ma poule …
… un cochon acheter
Mon cochon fait coui-coui-coui
… une brebis acheter
Ma brebus fait bé-bé-bé
… une vache acheter
Ma vache fait mée- mée- mée.
… un ch'val acheter
Mon ch'val fait ouigne-ouigne-ouigne
My hen goes coc-que-daque
My rooster goes cocilicou-cou-cou
Never would I be jealous
My rooster goes cocilicou-cou-cou.
goose -coin-coin-coin…
pig - coui-coui-coui
ewe - bé-bé-bé
cow - moo-moo-moo
horse - ouigne-ouigne-ouigne
04 Quand le bonhomme a semé son avoène
Quand le bonhomme a semé son avoène
Quand le bonhomme a semé son avoène
Il la sème comme ci
Il la sème comme ça
Mariolette, mariola,
avoène, avoène,
Que la terre est amène!
a hersé son avoène
arrachait
a fauché
a battu
a fait cuire
a mangé
When the good-man sowed his oats He sow like this .. like that.
Mariolette, mariola Oats, oats How pleasant the earth is!
harrowed
weeded
mowed
threshed

05 Dessur le pont de Nantes,
Rencontré Marguerite
Rencontré Marguerite ,
J’ai voulu l’embrasser.
Les messieurs de la Justice
M’avont mis prisonnier.
Quand la belle entend dire
Que son amant est pris
Elle s’habille -z-en page,
En page, s’habille t’elle.
Parcourant tout’ la ville,
Comme un brave garçon.
Messieurs de la Justice,
Donnez-moi permission.
C’est d’aller voir mon maître
Qui est dans ces prisons.
Allez, allez, disent-ils
Mais n’y soyez pas longtemps.
« Bonjour, bonjour, mon maître,
Bonjour vous soit donné
Laisse tes habits, laisse
Prends les miens que voici
Et laisse- moi seulette
Dans ces prisons ici.
Comment faudra t’il faire
Pour sortir hors d’ici ?
Vous passerez la terre France
Vous marcherez poliment
Les messieurs de la Justice
Savent courir les champs.
Le lendemain , à dix heures,
Son procès fut jugé.
Fut jugé à pendre ,
A pendre et enterrer
Dessur le pont de Nantes
Au milieu des archers.
Messieurs de la Justice
Vous n’avez pas raison,
C’est vil prendre une fille
Sous l’habit d’un garçon.
Si vous êtes une fille
Dites-nous votre nom
Mon nom est Marguerite,
Marguerite , c’est mon nom
Fille de gentilhomme,
Née de riche maison.
Si vous êtes une fille
Nous vous f’rons visiter
Par quatre démoèselles
D’une haute qualité.
On the Nantes Bridge, I met Marguerite, to kiss her. The Justice arrested & imprisoned me. My beloved heard so dresses In pageboy’s clothes to ask. Gentlemen, I beg permission To see my master in prison. Go & don't be long. Good-day, master, greetings! Leave your clothes ,Take mine Leave me here. Just walk out politely. Thank you, Dr. Bennett. I totally lost it when you reminded us that Scots were forbidden to even wear the traditional clothing, probably the only clothing for some of them, and my tears flowed freely remembering the brave survivors I never knew. Maybe this was what drove them from their home, when my own Scottish Highland ancestors came to America in the 1700's. I feel a connection with Scotland, and a sweet connection to Inverness, where they had been for countless generations. No doubt, some of my people died at Culloden. May all those who fought and died at Culloden rest in peace, and know they are never forgotten.
