Yes it's cool but it's "just" a bridge to the chorus, for me the best part is the flute which could be considered a flute solo? But then again it's my opinion
I said id mix it up a bit and cover some Toto. Such a great groove orchestrated by Jeff Pocaro in this track. I was watching different Live videos of him playing it and one fill he did really caught my ear. I tried to replicate it @3:15 in the video just before the final chorus. Also I've started uploading old unseen videos on my Facebook page that haven't been seen on youtube due to their copyright laws. I've recently uploaded Zero by the smashing pumpkins and plan to upload a Jimi Hendrix Video next. Heres the Link to my page , Cheers , Colm facebook.com/ColmDowlingDrums/
It's one of my favorite fills, he did really caught my ear too. When I watched that video for the first time I listened to that part about a million times
GONNA TAKE A LOT TO DRAG ME AWAAAAYYY FROM YOOOOOOU, THERE'S NOTHIN THAT A HUNDRED MEN OR MOOOORE COULD EVER DOOOOOO, I BLESS THE RAAAINS DOWN IN AAAAAAFRICAAAAAAAAA, GONNA TAKE SOME TIME TO DO THE THINGS WE NEVER HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD
From a drummer (58 now, playing since birth) to a drummer Great chops. Time is spot on. I see some Moeller technique there. Keep going and listen to everyone that has ever sat behind a kit and lit up the stage. That's what we do. Carry the torch and focus on your left hand. Play opposite. Its not easy but focus.
Love the 3rd of the 16th on the bell. Well done holding 16ths at a perfect dynamic for the whole song. The triplet fills are spot on after the keyboard solo, just as Jeff did them.
Great job. Jeff Porcaro was one of the most talented drummers ever yet was grossly undervalued IMHO. His beats are very complex and one has to really listen carefully to hear all of the different notes and sound nodes. Rosanna is another one that requires true diligence.
If you listen to the recording then you will realise that there is a quarter note foot hi hat pattern not sixteenth notes on the hi hat along with a quarter note floor tom, it's a shaker and maracas giving the illusion of sixteenth notes on the hi hats, although the great Jeff Porcaro (RIP) played sixteenth notes on the hi hat live but the recording has a lot of percussion on it played Jeff Porcaro, Joe Porcaro and Lenny Castro
I stand corrected about the quarter notes on the floor tom and the djembe, Jeff Porcaro played a unique 1, 2, the ah of 2, 3, 4 on his Cowbell which was matched by Lenny Castro on his congas with quarter note shekere and the 16th note shaker pattern
Im only 12 and iv been learning drums for a year now and im all ready grade 4(because grade 1 and 2 i learnt in a klick of a finger) people say im a fast learner. But with an hour to spare i finally learnt this song for my friend.16th notes, fills, drags and all. Cant wate to get back to school to show my friend.
The mind goes somewhere incredible when your behind a kit. Nothing is wrong in the universe and your full of growth and contentment. What a beautiful thing music can do for your soul. Primitive. Full. Nothing but growth.
After these I'm sure you could end up covering rosanna (Probably in a perfect way), I've tried that a lot of times but I can't xD, it's very diffcult but im sure you can
This is what decent drumming is all about: Good Sound, most solid time keeping, reduced and taken back interpretation, awesome and sophisticated wows in the ending part. I am jealous
y'all this was my first favorite song! :) i remember in intro to german in middle school, i had my backpack on my desk and i had my head down listening to this on my headphones full blast. started "accidentally" singing along to the chorus and someone got my attention and hushed me lol good times
@@limebackwards160 I have to admit that's a great fill and it sounds extremely skillful but it's not as hard as you think. It's just triplets: snare, H tom, L tom, L tom, L tom, bass drum (all this repeated twice) plus the regular fill he did at 1:13. It's quite easy after a few minutes of practice. But apart from that you're right, it's sick!
Ik only 12 and iv been playing drums for a year and im all ready a grade 4. People say im a fast learner. But with a little practice and an hour to spare i finally learnt that hole song off by heart (with ths fill and the 16th nots with the right hand). The drags were awesome thou. Cant wate to show my drum teach
Watch the way Simon Phillips plays this song. Not straight 16ths at all. It is a samba that is played with grace with dynamics between the verses and choruses not slamming the beat.
I love this song, it's absolutely flawless, the ambience makes me feel like I'm in Africa myself, specially on the flute part, I just close my eyes and imagine a better world for everyone
Wow, only watched 2 mins and I already wanted to share that I really like this. And your floor tom sounds awesome! Well done, keep on drumming & sharing!
From one drummer to another, I say kudos to you, Colm. Nice backbeat and keeping up the 16th note hi-hat groove with just your right-hand. Your clip is proof that you don't have to be playing in 7/8 at 150 bpm; on a 30 piece kit, in order to entertain and impress.

Awesome cover! You are a great drummer, one prime example is your variety of styles. You got pure hard rock and metal covers played great yet you can play more soft and laid back songs like this with good groove!
Great fill and groove keep practicing you are excellent in your technique I follow and listen your video they are without mistakes im drummer and you are lucky cause you have great cymbals zildjian and drums ☺

01:13 best part by far
Gotta be the best fill in music ever. It’s so simple but it’s just incredible.
Agreed 100% 🤙
I would say 3:16! So cool! :)

Totally agree! Very hard to play exactly in time...
colm, great job adding some "pep" to that``your confidence is very good! fun to watch!

This song is constant 16th notes throughout, props to you from a fellow drummer!
Yeah man , good exercise for the right hand
Colm Dowling I exersise my right hand on the hi hat and on my dick lmao
King Troll you're so cool! Glad to know that you're a drummer too! Newbie here.
KingToll Levitate is a real challenge with your right hand that’s why I play it with two hands
Jeff Porcaro was the King of 16th notes. Very challenging indeed!
I'm obsessed with your covers man
Hey Char. How are u doin hun? I have done some covers and hopefully you will like my versions.
the tom's sounds are awesome
morb124 That’s because they are tuned correctly

Trying to practice this song. Those 16ths are such pain. 😂
Thats Jeff Porcaro for you 😅
No they arent
Jeff put subtle accents on the 16ths on the hats.

Best cover of Africa I've ever seen. And you added Jeff's favorite fill in at 3:17. That was fantastic, too.

Good right hand may friend, very good drummer! Hello from Brazil!
Sooo this guy suddenly has covered all my favorite songs, from Alice in Chains and now Toto. Amazing channel
