How did it go
I am 35 and I am from Taiwan. My Taiwanese parents are conservative. When I came out to them at like 17, they was like "We would never accept you in this family." With years going by, I came to realize that I don't need anyone's permission to be who I really am. My parents would not accept me, it's neither my parents' fault nor my fault.

Young man, let me congratulate you for being so bold and brave. As a 54 year old black man, my coming out wasn't as easy as yours, but the trauma was just as real. I am a PK (preacher's kid) so just think about what you shared with us, and multiply that by 30. I was thrown out at 13, but I survived. Yes I was attacked, physically and sexually, but I survived. But however, my best coming out ever, was when I came out to my son, and his response, You are still my dad.

I came out as gay at the age of 15 in 1977 and i can tell you it was hard at that time so be your true self and live your life for you always and forever. You will find the tribe that wants to run with you on your terms.

Well the hate and everything else in that time was harder than it is now, but it is till bad now. The notation that some think it is so easy is fooling, blind themselves. Things as people still hate, judgment to your skin, ethnicity, disability still goes on.

As a Latina and being part of the LGBTQ community.The same for me as a trans woman when i came out to my mom and stepdad. I was kicked out in the streets in Texas at 17. My dad and my grandparents accepted me from the begining. While my mom didn't talk to me for 7 years. She came around and now is an allied for the LGBTQ community.💖 Si se puede✊🏽👏👍👏

The act of coming out never sat well with me because I always asked myself why must we go through this awkward ordeal and straight people don’t have to, so how my family found out was when I started dating my boyfriend at the time and they’ve known ever since. I didn’t sit anyone down because I believed that I didn’t owe anyone any explanation because I was doing nothing wrong I was just living my truth.

In my opinion, there's no such thing as "coming out". Your sexuality is your own business. Family and friends should love you no matter what. God loves us so much he gave us his only begotten son to save us. I prayed to God for strength and mercy, he delivered it to me through unconditional love. You are a sweet young man!! You are fortunate that all your family finally came around and accepted you for who you are. I am 69 and was outed by a niece who saw me coming out of the gay bar one night. My family is also religious and have not been accepting of me. I was closeted my whole life, until I got outed, because I knew I would not be accepted if any of my family and friends found out. I wasn't wrong about that. Now I am in an open and affirming church, making new friends who are accepting of me, and basically starting a whole new life. You were wise to come out when you are still young. I wish I could have, and would have, but l didn't have the courage to do it!! Much love and respect for you!! ❤️🥰🌈
My mom said the exact same thing about fighting demons when I came out to her. Also, my parents tried to fly me out to Texas to pray with this pastor lmao. Religious parents always be extra AF. You are a beautiful, articulate young man and doors are going to open to you and you won't even have to touch the doorknob. Intelligent people don't give a care about who you sleep with or fall in love with. They are interested in your talent and personality. Just stay away from butch bunnies who say one thing when you are with them and another thing when they are clicking it with their buddies. Some of those guys are nasty and vicious. Your coming out story reminded me of how difficult it was for me to come out a long time ago. It was not as supportive as it is now but your story brought back a lot of memories and emotions. Very Inspirational. I got disowned by a few friends and family members when I came out too but I did my crying and moved past the people that would tolerate me and here i am today happy strong and successful but most of all proud to be who I am

Very good coming out story. It reminds me of being young and not sure. Fortunately I was never in the closet. I also told my parents that I could not change who I was. From that day on, they never argued with me about it or called me names. I was 14 when that happened. Always good to hear stories of survival, acceptance and love. Stay true to you.

Sometimes parents are extremely positive, affirming, and compassionate. Ideally, all parents should make one thing clear as they learn and process: that no matter what, they love you unconditionally. As for me my coming out to my parents was very difficult because my Father is a Pastor. One thing about they love me. So stay strong and keep believing in you.
Since your sexual orientation is not a choice and doesn't change, you made the only rational choice of accepting yourself as you are. Hope you have a happy and wonderful life. Thanks for making this video to help others like us.

I told my parents on Mother's day 3 years ago. I'm Black, White, Mexican, and Native American plus come from a deeply religious household. When I came out my mom told me she and my dad would never stop loving me because I make MY life not them but to live it well, doing what is good. I have had traumatizing experiences through my life but I never let them hold me down and kept up the good fight. Now I have a boyfriend who is taking care of me while I'm paying some debt because he knows that once that is done we can really start living a better life. The rest of my family was pretty accepting as I literally told them "I'm I any different from before I told you all?" And they left it alone and it's been good ever since. Have a great life man as you only get the one.

Thank you for being so open and descriptive about your entire life experience coming out. Brought a tear to my eye and so helpful to those going through the process. I am 62 and am encouraged that kids can come to terms with this earlier in their lives than my generation did. I was not able to address these issues until I was in my twenties because of the way the culture was in the seventies. So many more resources out there for people to help them now. Not perfect of course, but better. ❤

I just stumbling across your channel and watch your coming out story. So glad your dad reacted the way he did and tat your brother eventually came around. I'm from the Caribbean and when I told my favourite brother his words were Ï'm your brother and will always be no matter what" and that meant the world to me as he was the closes to me of all my siblings knowing it didn't change how he felt about me took a huge weight off of my shoulder

The interesting irony for me watching your video here is that I went through my struggles in coming to terms with being gay right behind you, as my family lived on Coronado Island in the 1980s. Also, so much of what you talked about regarding your feelings in 7th grade are spot-on with my own at the time. You're a brave young man, and you're also a great example to your peers. I came out to family and friends face to face because I didn't want any artificial or carefully formulated reactions that would come through text or social media. Your coming out story resonates with me very well. This reality of being gay or in the closet will never go away in our life time. I’m happy to see new media outlets can put stories out there like your story. There’s so many sucides and bullying because of being gay. I’m glad my mom was so accepting, and now recently my dad found out and is okay with it. I struggled with it for many years about hiding who I was. Thinking all those years that I was not a normal human and that I was going to be a huge disappointment to my whole family. I’m glad I have the biggest support and that’s my family and I can truly be myself, been out to my mom for almost 4 years

As a parent, this was hard for me, too…I feel ur moms pain and anger, but in the end I love my child, very much and NOTHING will ever change that. I'm glad you were pissed when your mother had Mormons over. Never, ever allow yourself to be disrespected. Stand. These are not things that young people should have to deal with though. I came across your video here and wanted to post that I think you are a very brave young man. I also noticed you are in the Navy. I joined the Navy when I was 19 and this was back before even don't ask, don't tell was in effect. During recruitment, they asked and expected me to tell! I lied because I wanted to serve my country. I also lived in fear throughout my time in the service because in those days, if they found out a sailor is gay, they actually took them to jail while they gave them a dishonorable discharge. Of course, this was also before the Internet and so it was a very lonely existence. It makes me so happy to see a sailor who is able to not only be out and proud but also be able to post videos talking about their coming out experience. God bless you, 'shipmate'!

Not only does it get better for individuals but it’s getting better for us in society. This young man’s story compared to mine, coming out in the 1980s, is very different. All the painful struggle we went through to raise awareness is worth it when I see the younger generations ability to create a life of proud dignity. And your struggles today will make it that much easier for those to come. Stay strong. It is getting better!

The part where you mention Mormons coming was a hoot. I’m Mormon and I left after being in for many years because the Mormon Church is the richest hate group in the world. How were they going to help you when they hate you for your race, color, ethnicity and orientation?

Both of my parents have passed-on, now, with my mother having gone 10 years, before. My most recent cherished memories was just how close my dad & I had gotten to be during that time. 👨👩👧👨🏿🤝👨🏽

It is so brave of you Vincent to share your story. I came out in 2018, age 28 but it was something I always knew and my parents figured me out. I can relate to how you shared that you first said you were bi. It's a safe choice in the early part of finding personal bravery. The difficult path of removing the glass ceiling to just say "I'm gay" to family. I definitely started to figure out my preferences in 2018 and in 2019, I started making more friends with gay Latinos. My friends in Cuba that I still am friends with and have gone to visit now 4x. It's amazing on the element of surprise because I never had visiting Latin America and the Caribbean in my thoughts prior. I also wanted to say Love, Simon was my similar story since I never was with anyone but after having some life experiences of putting myself out there, I had to give life advice to some high school students where I taught. For anyone, you get to decide what you say, where you say, how much you say, and you set the boundaries on what you are comfortable with. There is no set timeline on coming out. I wrote my dad a 2 page letter saying I wanted to talk and I deliberately left my house for a day to go to the movies and to the mall. I asked my dad to write me a letter back and to put it in my room. The next day after having lunch and walking out in the park, I came out. Always choose bravery, have your trusted supports, and do not let the glass ceiling of hiding or pretending hold you back. You are brave Vincent. Yea I had that experience when I came out to my mom, it was just so easier to say that I’m bi, even though I knew I was fully gay. A few years later I had to clarify to my mom that I’m gay.

A great coming out video. Totally candid about your feelings, and so positive. At the same time, LGBT folks need to understand that coming out means that the friend or family member will need to process the news and that can take time. They have to come to terms with being a parent, sibling, etc. of a gay family member. Coming out can be only about getting a burden off your shoulders, but it can also be an act of love, sensitivity and patience.

Awesome video bro. I *officially* came out on National Coming Out Day, Oct 11 (last year) at 34-years-old and would always look to TH-cam videos like this for encouragement. I’m thinking of making one myself. But I’m glad that you came to terms a lot sooner than I did lol. And I’m glad that you’re on good terms with your folks. I’m black too and I gave my parents the same ultimatum: either accept me or deuces ✌🏿It took them a little bit but they eventually came around. My mom gives me dating advice now lol

Thank you for sharing your story. I came out late in life. The most important part of coming out is loving yourself and knowing that you are not alone. We are not the ones who need to change. The world needs to change. I am so proud and thankful for being gay. It has taught me not to judge or hate anyone.

You are welcome. You are a handsome guy. And I feel you are very intelligent so, now that you know yourself now continue on being yourself for you first. Careers and living on your own or at so point in the future when you meet someone who is goodlooking, smart with a cool career, you may want to live with each other. But you will decide those things in your life as you continue to become more mature. Being gay is apart if you and not the whole part of your life.

Some of my Black gay friends had a really hard time coming out...it seemed that all of them were disowned for some period of time, but after things settled down and their families had time to process things, their relationships improved a lot. I know a couple of them will still say how much it hurt them for their family to be bigoted towards them for how they were born ‘cause they know what it’s like to have people be bigoted towards them for the colour of their skin when they were born. I hadn’t even thought about that ‘cause where I’m from, homophobia is pretty rare so most of my friends growing up, and myself and my cousin...came out and our family members just said okay thanks for letting us know. Anyway, it really made me sad to hear the pain and hurt in their voices when they were all telling me about their coming out experiences. 😓
Mine? Mom said she liked my bf at the time, then asked who’s top and who’s bottom...so I had to explain that we’re both guys, it’s not like there’s a “woman” and that I know a lot of really masculine guys who rather bottom. Then my dad asked, “you happy?” and after I said “yes”, he told me, “okay, das all a parents wants, for their kids to be happy in life.”

My situation is so awkward I came out to my parents at 22 years old in 2022. They promised to "understand" the situation instead they're always forcing me to pray with them every day against "homosexual thoughts" and honestly it's killing me. They even pray for me to find a husband and all these heterosexual expectations they put on me. I regret coming out to them but not to my friends who have been really supportive. My extended family are more supportive which I wished I got the same energy from my actual family.

Im Jamaican too. I told my mom at 17 years old im 25 now. I didnt tell my dad because i was nervous as well. My mom first blamed herself, and called herself a failure and cried. I told my sister a day after and she cried (because she was afraid of how others would treat me). My mom began coming to me about “dreams” and “people” she hear and always some scenario about a young gay guy that had some bad situation. Then we went through the phase of her blaming the devil and how im comfortable with sin. Then the phase of accepting it but dont talk about it. Then now where I can openly share my thoughts on a guy and she doesnt cringe (although i rarely do that). And the key is to live your life and keep winning. Your family loves you once you show them that you are the same person and killing it by succeeding and having a level head they will come around guarantee. Thats what happen to me. Just a perspective only my immediate (mom and sister, and brother in law) knows. My cousins i drop hints and screw with them all the time as a humorous person, good feeling they know but never had that convo. And then friends and coworkers. I keep it as an as needed to know basis not ashame but still my own business. So best of luck but think it through dont do anything rash when you may be cut off. But please be open to meeting people your age and your own happiness. You dont have to tell people till you want but grow to love yourself and let people worthy in. And be safe!

It's better if you come out to your parents when you aren't financially dependent on them and live separately from them. If you do it and you think they will take the news badly, especially when you are dependent on them and it goes wrong, it can be a detriment to your life.

I don’t know where you live but don’t do anything towards your family until you are on your own feet and have decent friends to support you.
You don’t owe your family anything especially if you already now feel you can not trust in their unconditional love and intelligence to be able to step out of their comfort zone. If protestantism is involved it might get even worse. Don’t push yourself. You don’t need to be ‘open’ to ‘closed of’ people. Take care.
