The editorial was well started with the definition of Democracy where it is an act and not just a state.. However currently, the constitution upholds as there is no single party with 10% of the Lok Sabha seats - and hence there is no Opposition Leader !! Democracy is laid to rest here !! Questions asked by various "leaders" are distorted and ridiculed by the all the all powerful BJP IT cell. Every question, news or statement which demands no excuses and stories - the narrative is changed as per their convenience and the "Whatsapp Univeristy" and other social media platforms are filled with narratives which not only mask their inability and inaction, but ridicule the past or divide the nation by using polarising strategies of religion or national and anti-national. Last but not the least, even if the questions reach out to the masses demanding an answer, the "leaders" are subjected with ED or IT audits based on what is hidden in their closet.. Bottom line - If Democracy needs to prevail - what are the next steps.. Unless we understand the problem - can we come up with a solution ???
Good effort in bringing out the issues of democracy and economy. Role of opposition, media and intellectuals. Worth discussing and much needed. But it is partial correct and conveniently turning blind eye to certain essential facts. Whether some sections mention are silent or silenced ? Intellectual opposition to demonetization, passing of laws by parliament and management of Second wave of covid were bulldozed or intellectuals are silent. Where opposition is silent or opportunity was denied in the parliament while passing farm bills ? The left intervention in the parliament and outside through agitations were conveniently forgotten.

I don't think that everyone is silent....you are speaking and so are the other serious media outlets......time to time I have seen lots of opposition leaders in the parliament talk about demonetization, CAA, NRC, farmers bills....the biggest fault is that BJP has a majority and they are not in coalition with any other party. PUBLIC GAVE THEM TOO MUCH POWER once again in 2019....hope by the next election more people will understand the value of their vote.

How can one ask questions when important bills are passed without debate? None of the questions were answered in the parliament in the last 6 years. Democracy at its nadir in India and this is what brute majority does to a democracy.

On your criticisms: it is ok and fine if one equates nobody to mainstream platforms and media. Otherwise: 1. Fear of ED/IT/CBI/NIA has kept many silent. After all even you had IT enquiries! 2. I think some opposition is talking, but don't have a "platform". Retired bureaucrats and armed forces perssonnel have written enough letters to the government but those with the largest reach / biggest platform don't report. Yours is a small stage and you talk; and there are many small ones. 2. On 'finito' of de-mon, the basic funda is create enough new 'crises' so you have to target the 'now' and forget the past. 3. Reminds me of Indira gandhi and her chamchas when she became paranoid in 1974: "foreign hands", internal threat (railway employees strike for instance", Indira is India, India is Indira of Devkant Baruah..... 4. One more reason why middle class "suffers" more: they were bandied about as the "aspirational" class: as it is they were not satisfied with status quo and wanted to 'climgb the ladder'; so when the steps falter and you again find yourselves on the floor you are materially and mentally 'sunk'.
