Just the thought of fusing a nuclear bomb myself with my own hands makes me become overtaken with a sense of anxiety and doom, like the uneasy feeling you get when you're up high on something, where it feels like the depth is trying to pull you forward into it, that's how I feel when I think about it. I would bet most of the scientists who worked on nuclear bombs had a high level of stress throughout their lives.

The bomb was reduced in yield due to two reasons afaik. 1. The survival of the pilots and 2. Reduction of material thrown into the atmosphere by the detonation. Being detonated at 4 miles as it was, made it one of the “cleanest” detonations carried out. Had they gone with 100 Mt it would have lifted vast amounts of irradiated dust into the air.

The reason for why our nukes have gotten smaller might surprise you. It's because the accuracy is better. Back when maybe you'd hit the target, maybe it lands 50 miles away, the solution was to make bombs huge and have multiple war heads that would spread out. Who cares about hitting the target when one ICBM can take out an area the size of a smaller state? Once ICBM targeting became more precise, they decided it would be better to only nuke the enemy's important targets and not necessarily render the planet completely uninhabitable.

@@ressljs Not sure it was just accuracy. If you need to be hundreds of miles away , well that limits it's battlefield usefulness, where you can use the bomb and not harm your own side. Plus a victory is not much good if you can't take advantage of the spoils of war and instead must wait thousands of years. So they started working on short lived (comparatively) high radiation weapons that would kill all the pesky enemy but leave a lot of infrastructure in place which would then be available to use in a far shorter period.

The Trinity Site test was the one where they where worried about setting the atmosphere on fire. And that is KIND OF a misunderstood fact of the era by us today; the American Government, the people working on the bomb, and most physicists knew based on all their independent calculations the explosion wasn't anywhere close to setting the atmosphere on fire (I think the average chance of setting the atmosphere on fire was less then 1% in the peer reviewed calculations). But since it was listed in the official probable outcome calculations when the general public heard there was even a possibility the media and arm chair experts ran with it to try to get the Government to cancel the Trinity test.
Remember before CERN brought the LLC online and "everyone" was worried "we could accidently create a Universe that would destroy ours" or "they might make a blackhole that would swallow our solar system"? When in reality no-one that actually was working on the LLC or understood what the LLC could do was worried about this since the official calculations showed and explained how unlikely it actually was either of these things could happen. But still arm chair experts and non-scientific publications went nuts for over a year before the LLC came online and sparked actual petitions and government inquiries that almost shutdown the LLC before it was finished. Pretty much that is what happened with the Trinity Test petitions; people not smart enough to understand what is actually happening needing to have a say is a sad reality that repeats it's self over and over again in history.
-Before the first train was put on a track; "experts worried" moving that fast would suck the air out riders lungs... even though a horse could potentially go fast then the first trains.
-Before and even into the early years of electric generators "experts warned" people of vapours from electric outlets... I actually forget if they thought the electricity carried the fumes of the fuel the generator burned or if it was ozone vapours which only occur around open arks or electricity
-Before self serve at Gas Stations become common place across North America; "experts said" pumping your own gas was highly dangerous due to risk of explosions and fires if you pump wrong... it actually was in the very early days of gas stations until they learned how to ground out cars and pumps, but the fear kept on so strong that literally every time a state or province changed the laws to allow self service (even in 2010 when the last place in North America changed) people in those places petitioned the change for fear of blowing themselves up pumping gas
-When the Potato first came to Europe "English authorities advised" potatoes where poisonous and could cause serious illness or even death... this was because The Virgin Queen Elizabeth ordered a feast made entirely of potatoes when and the cooks served mostly the plant part which is poisonous rather then the tubers that are safe to eat and everyone at the feast got SUPER sick several courses in (side note: think of how gross that would have been hundreds of people in the same hall being sick after eating nothing but greens and potatoes) which lead to almost all of Europe avoiding the potato until the French King Antoine pretty much tricked people into eating them during a famine

@@CartoonHero1986 Potatoes can kill, if they're green. You sneer at people in past ages for being worried about safety, yet we have to be. You could also mention how aerosols and fridges ended up destroyed much of the ozone layer (although I have a sneaking suspicion all these nuclear tests will turn out to have been a factor one day)... Or how a medicine created to cure morning sickness produced babies with stunted limbs. Or how a pesticide for bugs ended up decimating the bird population by thinning the shells of their eggs. Or how agrichemicals and plastics are affecting human fertility and may play roles in breast/prostate and testicular cancer. And so on and so on. We are screwing things up, because we didn't look at the little possibilities.
If there was a 1% chance it could set the atmosphere on fire, that is actually a high risk. It may sound like a small one, but it's higher than your odds of being struck by lightning...
