    I've always had a soft spot for the 78 through 81 Ford pickups, and I just purchased a one-owner 1976 Ford F-150 two-wheel drive she has a 300 straight 6 and and 4 speed transmission got to love them granny gears these trucks are so reliable

      Why 78-81? Why not include 82-86 since it's the same body style as the 80/81?

      @@jameslandon4126 because some of the 78 still had round headlights on earlier models and some didn't have emission controls, but having owned lots of 66 through 81 Fords these are my favorite years

      @@michaelmyers3892 To each their own but I think you missed the point. My question was why did you stop at 1981? Those weren't transitional year trucks and the body style continued on until 1986.

    I love old trucks. For me it doesn’t matter if it’s a Ford, Dodge or Chevy they just have a look and These old trucks are a little less complicated to work on Compared to the modern stuff anyway. that’s a sweet Rig you got there. Looking forward to seeing what you do to it.

    bed side compartment holds a 24 pack cans of beer perfectly . back in early 70's had a 68' ford straight six 4 speed dam good truck.

    Very cool truck. We’re currently starting a 79 F250 Camper Special. It’s jade green with light jade two tone. Beautiful truck. You’ll have to check it out. Looking forward to seeing the progress on it.

    I love these old fords my dad had several of them he had a green like that. I have 3 ford trucks now I am working on

    I knew it would happen eventually. I had an exact twin to this truck. I bought it in 1985. I put a 460 and 34” tires. Sure wish I had it back.
    Mine actually had split rims.I swear they are all green too.

    That compartment on the bed side is a tool box. That will come in handy you will need them tools driving a ford ha ha that's a pretty good looking truck hope everything works out for you with it

    Hello From Mark In Kentucky, I had a Ford F-350 with the same exact engine bored .with the cylinders 030 over. The one thing that I wanted to mention was the fact that the 400 engines were problematic in burning valves and the sound of your engine brought back some unpleasant memories for me in that I had to pull the cylinder heads twice while I owned the truck because of burned valves in which I sold my truck to a local farmer to use for feeding cattle.
    I will say that engine was a powerhouse when it was running well - It just didn’t last long enough. My local machine shop told me that the valve seats were primarily intended for leaded gasoline and the hotter temperatures of the unleaded fuel air fuel mix caused the valves to actually recess themselves into the cylinder heads especially true for the older 400 engines.
    That engine was horrible as far as fuel mileage in which instead of Miles Per Gallon; It seemed to be “Gallons Per Mile” and I am thankful that I do not own this truck now with the high fuel costs that we are facing.
    The fuel mileage was the same whether the truck was empty or loaded with my welding equipment which was very heavy. This truck had the 4 speed transmission, But I don’t remember if it was a New Process or something else like a T-18 which a lot of the Fords had in them. My F-350 was originally the Jade Green but had been repainted to White. There’s so many stories that I can tell regarding this truck. I only wish that I could have owned my truck when it was brand new instead of being pretty much mechanically worn out as it was when I purchased the truck.

      Hey Mark! Thanks for the info and the story I did the full tune up and belts so far the plugs all looked to be even and no oil I hope I don’t have the same issue but I bought this from the original owner brother who got it when he passed truck seemed babied I have not got it on the road yet as the brakes are still stuck but I hope I get more “smiles per gallon” then your rig did!

      Probably because that crappy Motorcraft carb leaking air around the throttle shaft. Any carburetor will be an improvement on those things. Those smog era motors were a disaster because they were trying to use carbs in a way that wasn't sound. Carbs need to run slightly rich so that when they lean out momentarily, that it's not destructive.

      In 72 all cylinder heads got hardened seats for unleaded gasoline. Did you have one of the early versions of the 400? Burnt valves shouldn’t be an issue past 72. It was across the board with all auto manufacturers since they were forced to comply with new government regs to run their vehicles on unleaded fuel.

      @@danhoyland142 That truck formally was owned by a steel company which used that truck for its construction division and was used really really hard to put it nicely.
      Honestly, It’s no telling how many times that engine was torn down and different parts of the engine replaced In which the cylinders had been bored to “30 Over”.
      I sure am glad that I do not own that truck with today’s fuel prices because with that truck, It wasn’t a matter of “Miles Per Gallon”, It seemed like it was more like “Gallons Per Mile” empty or loaded down with my welding equipment.
      I always said that I wish that I could have owned that truck when it was new instead of what I inherited, because that truck was a powerhouse when it was running well - All of the engine issues literally broke me financially and I had to draw the line and say enough is enough.

    That is a toolbox on the side of the bed its where you keep a jack jack handle other tools to change a tire

      That toolbox on the side, doesn't make it a camper special. The f150s, came with them. F150s weren't a camper special

    It’s a 400! Not a 400M
    351M is a destroked 400. They are 335 series engines, as is the 351C

      The engine stickers says 400M. That's common for a 1977.

    There's a diaphragm in there you don't want to heat that up you're going to melt it needs to be changed

      Yea it was froze anyway I had to remove it and replace the plunger and diaphragm as it was old and brittle

    I mean,, just how much can a carb rebuild cost for that 2 barrel? The accelerator pump shaft is rusted together. Behind the cover is a rubber diaphragm and spring.

    Find a 429 or 460 engine from 1970 up. Pull the 400m n drop the 460 in .The bellowing is the same but will have to make front motor Ms. The truck will now get 12 mpg n will go 120 mph.

      There's nothing wrong with leaving that 400M right there. It's a smog motor but so what? It'll do what you need it to do.

    I would change the oil if it been settin for 20 years , maybe sludgey , I messed up a motor that been settin along time before . didnt change it , it looked fine.

      Yes sir I dropped the oil out of it that day after it ran for those 5 or so minutes got fresh blood in there now!

    Am I the only one that cringe when he put an open flame on a carburetor after saying it smells like fuel. Probably not the smartest thing to do

    I had the same 77 as that one. I had a 400 cid and the guy before me overhauled the engine and 2 years later later again. The 400 was not a good engine.

    I 1 minute and 23 seconds in. Im willing to bet it runs ok but no oil pressure and a possible rod knock. The bottom end on these original engines were usually done at around 80 thousand miles, find a good machine shop that understands these engines that are willing to improve the oiling and the bottom end will last a long time

      Its loud because of the belts. In this video you can see the oil pressure high and good. Ill post another short video i took after i changed the 20+ year old oil and filter she smooth as sewing machine.
