    Late to the game, I know, but I would suggest Ubuntu studio, it's got everything installed that you need to get going right out of the box. Plus, the kernel is set up properly for audio work, and it includes jack, a big and important part of getting the most out of audio in Linux.
    You can also try AVLinux, which is a rock solid debian based system that seems stable as anything else I've tried. It's a little bit behind bleeding edge, due to it's debian base, but it's a good system for production.

      Which USB interface do you use? So far the only two guys I've seen on TH-cam that show their interface use the Behringer Uphoria. In the process of taking the dive into open-source recording (currently use Studio One 3 and Logic Prox), using a Tascam US-1641, Focusrite Clarett 8prex, an old MOTU 828 firewire, and an Allen and Heath Zed14 with a USB out.

      It's a good option - running a Dell Latitude e6400 laptop.
      It is upgraded to the max.
      8 Gig memory (maxed)
      120Gb Samsung SSD.
      Replaced DVD drive with a caddy, and that got a 250Gb laptop HDD in there.
      It runs everything I need.
      The USB audio interface is useable, but the sound quality is now showing its age (boss BR-800 44.1khz 24bit) the latency isn't as sharp as I'd like...
      But as I'm running an old I5 dual core CPU and the BR-800 is really long in the tooth...
      It's a good working setup.
      And STABLE.

    The Behringer - interface is class-compliant, and will work more or less everywhere without drivers.

    My main rig has the same CPU, memory config., SSD for the OS, etc., but a 1060GTX Nvidia GPU so perhaps that's why this thing is still zipping along compared to some of the newer ones I've worked on, but it's nice to see that the audio tools Linux distros have now are looking good. I tried Ubuntu Studio about 10 years ago and between my lack of any Linux skills and the development stage of the tools back then I gave up on it. It looks like a revisit might have better results.

    Super follow-up to last vid, Shane. Look forward to seeing more uses in this series. We are too quick to trash/recycle old PCs. Was Firefox a native browser already built into the distribution, or did you have to download and install it separately? Was the Ajax shot an intentional product placement?😁 Nice troubleshooting the 0 drive. Pls beg borrow or snatch a Sony A6500 or A73 for attaching to your set up. Would love to see if/how you might access the cam’s Linux-based OS.

    You might look at MX Linux. It is a rolling distro and is very stable.

    Does Ubuntu have a lightweight audiomixer which allows plugin support which can be either routed to other software or left alone for us to route XLR out to interface on another system (Basically just to work as a mixer with plugin support)?

    Great video. What I want to do is take audio from OBS as background music for my live session using streamyard.
    Is it wise to direct the audio from my output jack to the mixer with my mic and direct back into my system? Will skype or chrome see the mixer as a microphone ? What low end mixer would you recommend?

    You might want to alter those nperiods and samples/period number for a usb interface... you almost always want to run a usb interface at 48000 because there are more rates that work particularly more powers of 2.
    USB runs a fixed 1000Mhz clock with urb's sent on this clock. The ideal case is that your sample rate and period aligns frequently with this clock so usb can send a packet once a millisecond on a millisecond boundary.
    (512/44100)*2 is 23.219 ms which results in samples in buffer waiting for the next urb clock to be sent that's a always changing
    A definitive table of correct settings is :
    wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/list_of_jack_frame_period_settings_ideal_for_usb_interface
    All of the above applies equally on both Windows and Linux...

      Jack audio its better than pulse audio. I install the rt (low latency linux kernel) for better perfomance.

    Would you have to install Linux Ubuntu on a computer with no operating system or could I use it on my current laptop running Windows? Another question: I have an old (2008) Gateway computer with an AMD chip. Is this worth gutting and upgrading? I know the only original parts I’m going to keep is the shell 😂😂!!! If it is all possible, I’d love to do exactly what you are doing with your old pc. Cheers Shane!🤙🏾🤙🏾👍🏾

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can use it as you would any other operating system. Either in place of or dual install it with windows :-) 2008 AMD laptop is probably pretty slow. I think I have the same year! haha. Ubuntu will run better on it than Windows 7 for example. Also, the only real upgrade you can make hardware wise is to replace the hard drive with an SSD (Solid State Drive). That will give you the fastest experience.

    In your the best cheap podcast set up does the BEHRINGER audio interface (UMC22) reduce static and increase volume

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should get zero static with any half-decent external sound card. I show you at the end of this video how the audio sounds with this sound card. :)

    I have nothing against Behringer, but 2 out of 2 people on TH-cam recommend the Uphoria for recording with Linux/Ardour. Anyone have any luck with anything else?

      I know this is a couple of months late, and you're probably not interested anymore, but I'm using a Scarlett 2i2 and it's flawless. That is in both Ubuntu studio and AVLinux. I've used it on three different computers, and it's been perfect on each one. That's the 3rd gen model, I don't know about the earlier versions. I'm soon going to be trying to get my 8 channel firewire interface up and running. If I can get that happening, it will be a big boost to my capabilities.

      @@Crawpunk No problem, glad to be of some use. If I can't get the firewire interface to work (!sniff!) then I will shell out for the Scarlett 8i18, it has 8 inputs, and I could hook my ADAT up to it and use it for an extra 8 in. I suspect it will work just as well as the 2i2 has.

    • @Crawpunk
      @Crawpunk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@willmorrison1022 I've got an old MOTU 828 firewire that I need to try out, but first I need to get Ubuntu Studio on my laptop with the firewire port. If I can, it's good news if you still have a computer with a firewire port, since an old MOTU unit like this is practically free.

    • @willmorrison1022
      @willmorrison1022 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Crawpunk Exactly. I got the Focusrite and an Alesis unit (2 ADAT inputs for 24 in at one shot), and paid next to nothing for each. I love this one pawn shop around here, I swear I'm NOT going to get anything more, and then I go in and see what they have. They are the best one around, or the worst, depending on your wallet. But I've gotten 3 guitars and both of those interfaces along with a bunch of other stuff there over the years. GOT to stop going in there!
