When I hit my teen years, in the 80s, Jethro Tull became my most favorite band. Tull ran through several genres (and members, with lead singer/flutist Ian Anderson being the only constant) in its history, from blues and jazz, to hard rock, to progressive rock, to folk rock, and back to hard rock. They are AMAZING! And they have a huge catalog of works. Ian Anderson was self-taught (playing various instruments and on learning music). The band members were often quoted as saying that his songs were tough to play, with unusual time signatures and changes in structure. You have to do a deep dive. And while they are phenomenal (and entertaining) live, you really need to listen to their studio albums. They ARE playlist worthy! There are two continuous-play albums in their catalog which really feature their uniqueness as a band: Thick As A Brick and Passion Play. But they don't have breaks in the tracks...so prepare yourself. Lol
They are one of the greatest bands of all time. They have their own unique style, and a very deep catalog of great songs. For something a bit more rocked up, try "Sweet Dream" and "To Cry You a Song". You won't be disappointed.

The one you saw here is a watered down version of living in the Past. Its ok but so so for a first time reaction. '' Fun Fact '' ; Ian Anderson's father said in an interview '' I hated my sons music, ,,,until i saw the first Royalty Check''.

Ian Anderson, the singer and flautist said it was not really a concept album so proceeded to do a true concept album called Thick as a Brick which was once song across to sides of the vinyl album. They followed up by doing it again with a slightly jazzier A Passion Play with once song on the album. Next, they eventually moved to a more folk rock sound and then in the 80s even went a little electronic before settling back down as a rock band but with many different influences.
Too bad that was lip-synched because actually live Jethro Tull is pure entertainment. Definitely listen to more Tull, which is a very deep rabbit hole. Progressive Rock is for serious listeners, which you seem to be. Tull was my favorite band when I was 13 in 1971, beginning with the classic album Aqualung, which changed my life. Try Jethro Tull's live Thick as a Brick video. Also, please play Firth of Fifth by Genesis with Peter Gabriel, who should be knighted if only for his global humanitarian work. Have fun with '60s and '70s music, the greatest generation of music!
What evidence do you have that this was lip-synched? Ian waa known for exaggerated mouth expressions when he sang. And while this was clearly a staged alt take of Living In The Past (because it is very clearly not the studio version nor shot in front of a live audience in an arena rather than just on a tv show. Studio versions are what other artists routinely use when making a "live" video that they'll lip synch to), I see none of the usual clear indicators of lip-synching here.

Because the sound of the music fades out as they play a recording of some applause as the song fades out. Really, 99.2% of the time you see bands and artists on TV they are lip syncing to a recording. This was filmed in a TV studio, not an audio recording studio. Actually, Jethro Tull uses recorded sounds in their live concerts, see most performances of Songs From the Wood (band members lip synching to the recorded Ian Anderson backing vocals, lol).
Is this guy one o' the best?...YES! Jethro Tull put on the most impressive live show I've ever seen (Austin-1970.) To fully appreciate the talent o' Ian Anderson I recommend watchin' Jethro Tull-My God! from the Isle O' Wight concert on you tube. Believe me when I tell you there's nothin' else to compare!
You have to check out a live performance... a real rocker is their song Hunt by Numbers, every album has a different feel to it, these guys are master musicians and always worth a listen.

Tull is one of the bands with the most variety in their music. This track you listen is quite strange here cause first it isn't the original recording of Living in the Past but a re-recording they did for this '76 TV special. And also, in those years bands used to do a lot of these TV shows where they just played the song in playback. So here they are just pretending to play over a studio recording. Try to give a listen to some classics like: Aqualung, Cross Eyed Mary, Bourée, My God, Teacher, Songs From the Wood, Thick as a Brick, Locomotive Breath. Anyway, keep in mind that's a band that crossed 4 decades and more of music so they experimented with blues, hard rock, progressive rock, folk, synth pop, fusion, Asian influences etc. You can't have a complete idea of Tull until you heard every one of their albums

This is bit of a weird version of this song done for a TV show. Notice he sings the same verse twice. That's not in the original version. Ian Anderson (the flutist/singer) doesn't even like this song, because he was asked to write it as a hit. He decided to write it in a 5/4 time signature as a protest. For Ian at his most outlandish, check out "My God" live at the Isle of Wight, 1970. You've never seen flute played like that before, I guarantee!
I know many (or even most) will disagree, but I don't think live music is always the best introduction to a singer or band. The studio version of this is far superior in sound quality, and thus on the *_impact_* it makes on the hearer(s).
If you get into Tull, go to the early albums to get the real vibe that they had at the start ,Was Not Was is the first one ,strange and very interesting and then Stand Up

You should react to Locomotive Breath live and you a very different style. As for flute solos, Ian can get crazy in some of his solos. Listen to My God live at the 1970 Isle of Wight festival. I think you’ll be surprised.

This was groovy brothers, BUT their Madison Square Garden live from `75 is the better show...Tull where Ian Andersonn on flute/guitar had a awesome stage presence and a must see Dudes at the time...Rock on Dudes
Why does music have to 'fit' or be pigeonholed in a 'genre' before people can decide whether they like it or not? I understand the need for a second listen though.
