  • And so corruption furls its fingers tighter and tighter coiling around the necks of anyone and everyone who just wants a bit of entertainment, and an opportunity to follow their dreams and passion without twats trying to reach into their pockets.
What do you think happens next, is it overblown? Few developers have expressed the decision to move on from Unity, and even others stating were the damage controlled they'd still seek alternatives as clearly it's not safe, or fair anymore.

Unreal is only an alternative if you want to make yourself dependent on the whims of yet another (even bigger) company. Source 2 is also propietary. If you want to make sure you won't run into a similar scenario only a free and open-source engine like Godot is a real option. (Or of course developing your own engine, for which most indie devs probably won't have the resources.)

To my understanding, Unreal's pricing is worse but they do include that contracts can not be altered further after agreement, so new policies wouldn't take effect until fresh ink needs to be laid again.
That makes sense for Source 2, but it's at least still a good learning tool? I think?
Also appreciate the clarification, will pin this for those concerned, information I missed in my video :)

@@iamiceTV Ok, that they won't do retroactive changes is definitely an important aspect. It can still become an issue in future projects, however, if a developer builds up knowhow and assets around a proprietary engine and then pricing/policy changes.
To be clear, I'm only making a general point about the benefit of free and open source tools if devs want to protect themselves against this specific risk. Obviously there can be good reasons to use any of these engines, whether it's for learning or a specific feature set.

@@iamiceTV Unity also had this policy that contracts could not be altered after agreement and they quietly phased it out before changing pricing. No public company can be trusted with a game engine.

Greed is a hell of a drug!
Things such as this seems to happen all the time, especially in the creative industry. A small company providing a great service to artists because it's made by artists get successful and then employ the big smart guy from a non-creative industry because "he's the right man to take this company further in the business world," forgetting that he knows nothing of what their core users want or need.
Luckily, there's always some other group of people ready to take a shot at making their version of the original core product in their unique form!
And then they become successful and the cycle continues...

Open source stuff, especially software will always be the best thing to work with but yeah nothing happens to be eternal. Though, in Unity's case it really comes down to the fact they didn't bother discussing this change at all, sent a poorly-worded tweet mentioning the change originally stating ALL installations, including reinstallations and the like will be charged individually, before they immediately walked it back with further clarification that really didn't do much to change the situation.
I find that a lot of these shady business moves always come by the meter, only to receive pushback that makes them walk it back only a few centimeters so it seems more 'okay'. I really hope the bigger name devs follow-through with parting ways, and likewise a lot of forums and such have comments expressing the same sentiment. It'll be interesting to see what happens going further, especially with the mobile game market.

I think it's because of the title, but "Unity's Exodus" just sounds so much cooler than "Unity CEO is an asshole" or "Why Unity devs hate Unity!", but maybe your like and comment will push it forward :) regardless I appreciate your time.

@@Visigoth_ I see, that's unfortunate. There's still time for Unity to walk it all back, but what good does that really do except in the short term.
I hope you can figure out some plan of action to make transitioning to a new engine easier. Just don't give up, also if it ever does get playable maybe I can try it out ;)
