I watched the first animation when i was like in elementary. I didn't know about manga that time but i knew she'd always choose Kyo because she looked for the cat in Shigure's ornaments and likes the cat in the story of Zodiac in 1st ep and on the last ep, she ran to follow kyo.
Yuki just told himself that tohru was like his mon just to comfort himself he always loved her as a woman otherwise no one blushes when someone like your mom calls your first name , that whole mom thing was just to give up on tohru as he knew kyo won tohru's heart
Not really. If you've noticed, he's always acted polite towards her, and he only shows her his weakness and vulnerability. We've never actually seen him act like his "true self" around her. I mean, just compare how he acts around Tohru in comparison to his friends (the student council). With his friends, Yuki is playful and a bit sassy. He's more expressive. But with Tohru he always treats her with respect, just like how you would treat a mom or an older sister. The reason for his "flirting" with her has already been explained so I won't get into that. If he did love her romantically he wouldn't hesitate to show her his other sides, heck, even now he still calls her by her last name, "Honda-san" (and again, that's a sign of respect). Its quite natural that he gets mixed feelings about her sometimes, cause even if he thinks of her as a mom that doesn't change the fact they're still the same age.
He may be blushing from happiness. The one he sees as a mother figure calls him casually which is what mothers do, so to him it's kind of like she's grown closer to being adopted by her or something. Idk, lol
You do know that ppl can blush due to being flustered for reasons other than romance, right? You do remember all the times that Tohru, a character who naturally gets flustered easily, blushed in non-romantic situations, right? Tohru is a motherly figure who Yuki has been close with for only a few months at this point, not an actual parent who he grew up with. Considering how reserved Yuki is and how significant shifting from last-name to first-name basis is in Japanese culture, it makes sense for him to get flustered. Also, Kakeru literally brings up your wrong claim in S2 Ep 22 and Yuki clearly shoots that down. It's not about how Tohru sees Kyo, it's about how Yuki sees Tohru and that's it.
You do know that ppl can get flustered for reasons other than romance, right? Also, I don't think it's right to downplay their relationship as "only" a mother. We're so used to media pushing romantic love that other kinds of love often go unappreciated. Natsuki Takaya, the mangaka, has stated that Tohru being Yuki's motherly figure is the idea that sparked the entire series. Their relationship is incredibly important regardless of it not being romantic.
BLUSHING DOESN’T EQUAL ROMANCE (as someone said in a reply before). BESIDES, THIS WAS IN SEASON 1, WHEN HE HADN’T YET ACKNOWLEDGED THE FACT THAT HE THOUGHT OF TOHRU AS A MOM. ISTG IF I SEE ONE MORE COMMENT LIKE THIS-
At the first star of the series he tried to get close to her in a more romantic level, but he realised that it wasn't what he wanted. Yuki loves her, like a son would love a mother. So it's like a more pure version of love, the purest in fact
I think early on in the anime, he definitely liked her, because when you go through trauma, you tend to latch onto the first person that helps pull you out of it and helps you to see you maybe deserve better. But, I also think that changed as he grew as a character. He got more social, somewhat more confident, and he was talking to more people. He had more than just Tohru, and that admiration you have for them doesn't have to be romantic. Honestly, as cute as it would have been, I'm glad it didn't turn into a love triangle with Kyo and Yuki fighting for her. I always interpreted it as Yuki being influenced by Tohru and wanting to be a better person for himself, and Kyo was influenced by Tohru, wanting to be better for her. I love how dynamic the love in this anime is. Yuki sees Tohru as a comfort, someone he can be safe around, to be there for him. Isn't that still valid even if it's not romantic?
Yuki always loved Tohru. Since the first moment he met her when they were kids, she was his first love. The whole mother figure was more to console himself at the fact that she was already in love with Kyo. However, I’m so sure that Yuki loved Tohru as a women and not a motherly love. There are waayy too many scenes that definitely imply his feelings for her as a women. However once he realized that Kyo had feelings for her, he pretty much back out and told himself that he only saw her as mother figured that was dear to him. He didn’t want to take Tohru from Kyo. He didn’t want to make Kyo suffer anymore. Thus, he gave up on Tohru so she and Kyo could be happy.
Why are ppl so desperate to interpret Yuki's love for Tohru romantically? It wasn't, isn't, and never will be romantic. The fact that Yuki wanted to think of Tohru romantically because that's the expectation until he realized that he can't force himself to feel that way says a lot.
Yuki's love for Tohru isn't romantic. Trust me. I, myself, am a YukixTohru shipper. But, The anime and manga can explain very easily that this isn't romantic. I like Kyo x Tohru too so I have no problem. Although, I am a bit upset.
I think in the beginning of the series yuki did like tohru romantically but was still confused about what he was feeling, and the whole mother figure perspective thing isn’t far off i mean if you look at tohru’s character she gives off very motherly vibes as shown with Rin and kisa both who had a hard time finding a connection with their own mothers, rin more than kisa. She has this overwhelming passion that makes it hard for anyone to hate her and draws broken and hurt people to her to be comforted and soothed. This is a love that yuki has never had til now so it’s understandable why he’d be confused.Sorry this is long I just wanted to give my perspective.
nah he never viewed her romantically, istg people watch with their eyes close. He said he tried looking her in romantic way but just couldn't, for him she was always a mother figure and it makes sense how yuki only knew how to take but couldn't give. Tohru and yuki's relationship was just like that, a parent child. It was then machi came that he was ready to give and love her properly.
Way too many guys end up in relationships wanting the woman to be a mom replacement and the relationship becomes really bitter. Happens all the time . Yuki was smart enough to realise his issues and solved it with Tohru's help. Or else they would have been stuck in an unfulfilling relationship.
Man, I’m seeing a lot of gatekeeping manga readers. Quit spoiling shippers of the endgame pairings and let them ship whatever they want. It’s not hurting anyone.
Monica Serna *Spoiler Warning*. That’s not the issue. The issue is overprotective shippers jumping on the offense when a newbie likes the dynamic between Yuki and Tohru, and an old-time fan who should _know better_ goes, “Well, so-and-so and Tohru end up together.” It’s so lame.
Yuki understands Machi's problem and Machi understand Yuki's loneliness....no one in the anime even Tohru didn't get that Yuki is lonley...... And Kyo understood that Tohru is trying her best to be like her father and she is hurting herself inside....so do Tohru understood Kyo's sadness and his troubles At first for me too I have a problem that Yuki didn't end up with Tohru but as soon as I get to know this truth I am happy for both of the pairs......
After seeing all these discussions about Tohru and Yuki I wanted to state my opinion as well ^^ When I started watching the show I could see Tohru with both Yuki and Kyo. It was obvious that both cared for her, both had chemistry with her and both deserved happiness. However, in the end it came down to Tohru's choice and I could see why she fell for Kyo, I think the storytelling was great and logical in establishing that. I also believe that Yuki's feelings for Tohru weren't always motherly. I think he was a little in love with her from the start, her kindness making her hard not to love, but that he convinced himself that he didn't see himself with her romantically after realising that Kyo and Tohru are in love with each other. With the acceptance that he couldn't have her in that way, which I believe came easily to him considering his insecure nature, came that he shaped his love for her to something different and something he could also easily see her as, as a mother figure. Yuki has always seemed like a really selfless character to me and I think he oppressed his own feelings a little to not complicate the situation. I don't think he would ever put his own feelings over others and in the process of realising Tohru loves Kyo and that he couldn't have her that way, his feelings actually did change, even though I believe it took him a little time. Wow, this got longer than I thought it would. So all in all I believe, Yuki actually did once love Tohru romantically but that changed after he realised Tohru and Kyo love each other, because he wouldn't put his feelings over Tohru's happiness and in the end it only mattered that he loves her, no matter which way, and by seeing Tohru as a mother figure he could keep loving her with both of them being happy and being still close to each other.
i think yuki did have romantic feelings towards tohru at some point early on, but then it mellows out towards the end, where he sees tohru more as a motherly figure than a love interest, and i think that aspect is what made yuki a very well written character and not just another extra unrequited love character in your typical shojo harem ^^ yuki needed tohru, but he also implied that he wanted to feel needed instead of being needy, and thats exactly what he got from machi at the end of the story :D the character building in this whole series is amazing, truly
Okay I’m a Kyo x Tohru shipper, but.... Me: (Watching Fruits Basket Ep. 18 or 19 on Crunchyroll) Yuki: (Leans to Tohru and puts head on her shoulder) Tohru: (Gets really red!) Bro at all anime this anime broke my heart the most , At the time before while waiting for season 2 back then I decided to install the fruit basket future app then I started to read it and look at their future partners then i saw in that app that tohru will end up with Kyo and not Yuki..... I still remember how I cried in the bathroom that day like why u gotta play us like that man the whole season 1 you dedicated the ship to Yuki x Tohru then in s2 u sayin u change your mind and want Kyoruh instead? like bro I remember how much I cried so back then because of your sudden change of decision
Bro same. I literally was so sad but after seeing tohru x Kyo moments for like 3 weeks. I finally accepted them as a couple. But yuki x tohru moments were so obvious that they were gonna end up together yet at the end we get smthn else. Like fr the directors played us frr
According to the manga author (Natsuki Takaya), the first characters she created were Tohru and Yuki, and the first scene that she wrote was the part when *****SPOILER ALERT***** Yuki thanked Tohru and confessed his feelings about her being a mother figure to him. After writing that scene, the author was inspired to start writing the rest of the story up to that point. The author said that Yuki is the second main character of the series and is the one that carries the theme of the plot. So if not because of the fact that Yuki and Tohru's platonic relationship was first created, there wouldn't be Fruits Basket at all. Her idea of Yuki's image of Tohru was what pushed her to create the story. Many people have this misconception that Yuki is not the protagonist of the story because of Kyo and that Kyo is the one that Tohru fell in love with. Some also referred to him as a 'deuteragonist', not a protagonist. Always remember that being the main male character does not have to be the end game of the heroine. Yuki is the second character created by the author and he is one of the MAIN characters too alongside Tohru and Kyo. Maybe Yuki is the deuteragonist if we only refer to Tohru as the ONLY protagonist. However, I don't think that only Tohru is the protagonist, it is there three of them: Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo. So stopped referring to Kyo as the ONLY MAIN MALE LEAD. Both he and Yuki are the main leads here. Yuki's love for Tohru is also the same of importance as Kyo's love for Tohru. And again, the author herself mentioned that Yuki carries the theme of the story. My OTP is Kyo x Tohru, but I never referred to Yuki as behind Kyo when it comes to their importance in the story. Actually, I regarded Yuki as still the more important character than Kyo even after rooting for Kyo and knowing that the latter is the one that Tohru will love. I just happened to confirm this fact after researching Fruits Basket and its characters. I really love the manga and is one of the best shoujo mangas out there. I hope that the following would get to be animated, rebooted, or continued someday, too: - Alice Academy - Special A - Ouran High School Host Club - Skip Beat - Kimi ni Todoke - Au Haru Ride
After watching this show , Yuki wanting Tohru to be a mother figure really is a good idea . In plenty of real relationships, a lot of guys want their Mom replacement in a woman, want those women to deal with a lot of things and turn into a man baby , and resentment grows because they don't really have romantic feelings for the woman and the women end up growing bitter " I'm not your mom " . Yuki found out about his true feelings really fast , that he needed Tohru to help him with his emotional burden a bit and he would help her too ( because he had a shitty mom with issues); because he found this out and healed himself with Tohru's help , he didn't drag Tohru or any other girl through unfulfilling romantic relationships where the women needed to baby him . Tohru and Yuki are the protagonists , they have their healing journey together and find their own happiness, although with different people. And the real love triangle isn't Yuki×Tohru×Kyo, it's actually Kyo×Tohru×Momiji . Momiji was the one who made it clear since day 1 that he finds Tohru cute and wants her to be his wife , but nobody took him seriously because he acted like a kid 😂.
Well that’s ONE way to see if a boy likes you.~ If you call him by his first name and he transforms into a Zodiac animal.....He LIKES ya.~ Yuki even though you and Torhu aren’t together in the manga your still such a cutie when you blush~
I was literally so upset when yuki and tohru didn’t end up together. I get that yuki found someone who was a better fit to be with, but idk. It felt like machi and kyo were outsiders in this.
um am i still the only one who stiil ships Tohru and Yuki together....... and i mean, Kyo is nice and all, but I just think the relation ship would be cuter if she was with Yuki, that's all....
Ahhhhh I only watched the anime so I guess that's why I got attached to him easily but it's because throughout the series it was mostly Yuki's past that's being revealed slowly as well as his character development... while Kyo's just came at me near the end while I was already rooting for Yuki... if only I could fangirl without almost starting war (;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`)
I'll never get over yuki and tohru not ending up together. That mom bs is just bizarre to me. He obviously saw her as a woman cause there were many times he blushed. I think the mom thing was because she is the person he loves the most on earth.
Yeah it might sound a little weird to view someone your age as a mother but for Yuki it makes sense. He never felt a Mother's love and wanted it too. Yuki was confused of his feelings for her at first. He tried to treat her like a woman but it never felt right to him. In season 1 it felt like they were pushing YukiXThrou but as the series progressed there are subtle changes that hint Yuki doesn't have feelings for her romantically. Is it sad their ship didn't sail, maybe but the Mom thing isn't total bs.
Blushing doesn’t need to be because of love, you know that right? In this moment, the reason he blushed is because he was embarrassed. Calling somebody by their fairy name is a big deal in Japan, it means they are good friend and the person is important to them. Therefore, Yuki got embarrassed because he doesn’t really have friends (although he did get great friends later on). Yuki’s also quite a conserved person, so things like this would embarrass him easily. He doesn’t have any maternal love, his mum is trying to change, but throughout his childhood he never had any, so Tohru is there, caring for him and looking after him. He thinks of her as a mother, it makes sense. Machi recently got introduced and I personally think he’ll get together with her. He’s already opened up to her and wants to help her with her problems. I used to ship them too, but once Machi was introduced, I realised that Tohru wouldn’t have been a good match.
What the actual fuck is wrong with all of you dropping a series because your ship doesn't sail? This show is so much more about ships and romance. Its about connections, trauma, over coming that trauma, and just good vibes and healing. The fact that you actually DROP a masterpiece like this just because 2 characters you wanted to get together don't get together is an insult the author. The maturity of a 5 year old. All of you.
They say that Yuki only saw Tohru as a mother and it was a platonic relationship but what If Tohru actually chose Yuki instead of Kyo, if you put it that way, is Yuki going to let go of that chance and reject Tohru and tell her that he only sees her as a mother figure 🤔

Not at all it ends happily ^^
But I won't spoil it. It actually might surprise you.
Yuki belongs with Machi.
I know
Yuki understands Machi's problem and Machi understand Yuki's loneliness....no one in the anime even Tohru didn't get that Yuki is lonley......
And Kyo understood that Tohru is trying her best to be like her father and she is hurting herself inside....so do Tohru understood Kyo's sadness and his troubles
At first for me too I have a problem that Yuki didn't end up with Tohru but as soon as I get to know this truth I am happy for both of the pairs......

Honestly, I really think that Yuki is the best boy in this anime.

Imagine if Yuki and tohru went on dates and whenever he gets shy he does this:
Yep I agree with you.. actually this kind of make sense if you rewatch the anime :)
This is the most underrated comment!!!
@@hako3689 haha aaww thank you very much, means a lot :3
I don't think Yuki was in love for her... he see her just as a mother.
This remake is blessed. If you guys think this is cute; wait and see until you see the Rooster ;). He a tall boi.
If we ever get to see him..
Yuki blushing in his rat form is so cute.
i think yuki did have romantic feelings towards tohru at some point early on, but then it mellows out towards the end, where he sees tohru more as a motherly figure than a love interest, and i think that aspect is what made yuki a very well written character and not just another extra unrequited love character in your typical shojo harem ^^ yuki needed tohru, but he also implied that he wanted to feel needed instead of being needy, and thats exactly what he got from machi at the end of the story :D the character building in this whole series is amazing, truly
Okay I’m a Kyo x Tohru shipper, but....
Me: (Watching Fruits Basket Ep. 18 or 19 on Crunchyroll)
Yuki: (Leans to Tohru and puts head on her shoulder)
Tohru: (Gets really red!)
The Show: (Swaps screens with Kyo and Shigrue talking)
Me: WAIT! (Rewinds to Tohru and Yuki)
... do you have any IDEA HOW MANY TIMES I REPLAYED THAT!!!!!

Bro at all anime this anime broke my heart the most , At the time before while waiting for season 2 back then I decided to install the fruit basket future app then I started to read it and look at their future partners then i saw in that app that tohru will end up with Kyo and not Yuki.....
I honestly hate rats and mices, except for Yuki.
Ahhh so thats why he was getting all shy😶😶

Guys, I speak to you from the afterlife, Yuki just killed me with his cuteness
This is the highlight for me in the whole series!!!!!
I hope that the following would get to be animated, rebooted, or continued someday, too:
- Alice Academy
- Special A
- Ouran High School Host Club
- Skip Beat
- Kimi ni Todoke
- Au Haru Ride
Momiji was the one who made it clear since day 1 that he finds Tohru cute and wants her to be his wife , but nobody took him seriously because he acted like a kid 😂.

same why Kyo tho. his change is so fast and Yuki's slower when character developing.

EXACTLY. Yuki and tohru would be PERFECT

No tohru. You were just good enough, you got him to blush
since they already rebooted this anime i hope they will finish it all completely. i want to see yuki and machi happen.

This.........this never gets old
I'll never get over yuki and tohru not ending up together.
I used to ship them too, but once Machi was introduced, I realised that Tohru wouldn’t have been a good match.
i love how it took a couple seconds for it to register in his brain lol
Yuki definitely has a crush on Tohru 🌺💖❤️
Uhhh yeah about that...

All of you.
The amount of times I've watched this video-
They say that Yuki only saw Tohru as a mother and it was a platonic relationship but what If Tohru actually chose Yuki instead of Kyo, if you put it that way, is Yuki going to let go of that chance and reject Tohru and tell her that he only sees her as a mother figure 🤔
and he still has THE AUDACITY to call her by her last...
めっちゃ可愛い萌え萌えよ♡♡

I’m sorry but I shipped Yuki and Tohru more and I’m really disappointed on who they ended up being with but oh well unless shes happy
