      Andy & Alex You gotta appreciate how good they are as musicians... however, I may be wrong as I don’t play a musical instrument, surely you gotta be passionate about playing?! To me, again I have zero experience in playing, they look like they’re just going through the motions. I’m really trying to enjoy this, and Nightwish, but it’s just not happening.! But hey, everybody enjoys different shit. Hope you’re both well lads... 👍🏻💚🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    • @calibadgerdude6082
      @calibadgerdude6082 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Caroline McKinnon yes, you do have to be passionate about playing, and they are. This particular song, though, is insanely complex and difficult to play, so they rarely show much emotion during its performances as they’re all concentrating like hell so they don’t derail the beast and crash and burn. ;). Yes, they play it almost every show and have it memorized, but all it takes is one wrongly timed note and the whole thing will collapse.

    You really jumped off the deep end by reacting first to Dance of Eternity... this needs some building up, just like Metropolis Part 1, which have too many time signature changes to reliably count. You should check out "A Change of Seasons", "The Count of Tuscany" or "Octavarium" (studio version, all three clocking in at +20 minutes, but well worth the experience), or any of a bunch of songs from their "Live at Budokan" album (my favorites being "As I Am", "This Dying Soul", "Beyond This Life", or the ballad "Hollow Years"). Their discography is vast to say the least, and they have several "concept albums" that are absolutely astounding from start to finish (my favorite being "Metropolis Part II: Scenes From a Memory", or "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence"). "Images and Words" was their second album, but it was the first where they really started to gel and lay the groundwork for what was to come. I'm sure that once you guys get a few more DT songs under your belt you'll change your mind about them being "soulless" or "robotic" (a common accusation by people who have heard little of their music).
    You're right about them being influenced by Rush, according to the legend, guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung met drummer Mike Portnoy while waiting in line to buy tickets to a Rush concert. All three of them were students at the prestigious Berklee School of Music, so their musicianship is a foregone conclusion. Portnoy left the band in 2011 and was replaced by Mike Mangini, causing a split among hardcore DT fans, who either love/hate one or the other "Mikes".

      Oh, my. Please, look further! You haven't even scratched the surface, yet! The tune is certainly a picture of what the musicians in the band can do but it doesn't begin to encompass what the words to any of their songs mean. To me, the words are a full 50% of any band's worth and this band has that other 50% in spades! Look further, sir!

    This song is a technical masterpiece, but not really designed to be musically expressive. Personally, I would never recommend this one as a first taste of Dream Theater as they have much more interesting and more expressive music in their portfolio. Dance of Eternity is for musical theory doctoral candidates to write thesis’ on. XD
    My personal favorites are The Count of Tuscany, Misunderstood, This Dying Soul, and the whole of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.
    Some of their more approachable music would be Pull Me Under, On the Backs of Angels, The Spirit Carries On, Root of All Evil (for those wanting a heavier sound), and the live version of Hollow Years (has an incredible guitar part which was cut from the album release to keep it shorter).

    • @carlgibbons5777
      @carlgibbons5777 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The entire Awake album is pretty "approachable". It's my fav DT record because it's heavy, but they let the songs "breathe" a little more. Not so much overplaying/masturbation. Perfect combination.

    Alot of awesome sounds with no real rythm until towards the end. The first minute and a half had three change ups none of which meshed or had any fluidity with the previous parts. I lost focus on what they were trying to achieve. 😥

      @hoopsmccann639 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i was looking to see if anyone suggested fatal tragedy. definitely one of their best and you don't need to devote 20 minutes to it. if you prefer longer pieces, octavarium, the count of tuscany, endless sacrifice, a change of seasons, etc. you really can't go wrong with any dream theater from the first 9 albums.

    Earlier dream theater (with Mike Portnoy on drums) I think you'll really dig. They've kinda turned into a riff machine since, but their earlier stuff is a much more palatable type of prog metal. Check out Peruvian Skies - very pink floyd inspired, and Pull me Under which is a classic.

    Love you guys! Glad you are tapping into Dream Theater, however, this is not the song to be introduced to them with. Dance of Eternity is a medley of sorts with bits of previous DT songs and because of that, it doesn't quite get into a full of feeling groove that they are so good at providing. If I may, I'd love to see y'all react to any of these: Under a Glass Moon, Lie, Scarred, Learning to Live, or Erotimania. And they have some great epics over 10 minutes long like: Change of Seasons, Octavarium, Count of Tuscany. And if you want another amazing live performance, my favorite is Hollow Years (Live at Budokan). Like always, keep up the great work and I look forward to all of your next videos. Cheers!!

    Not a good song to get a first impression of Dream Theater. Musicianship on this song off the charts, but it's one if those songs that sounds like a bunch of exercises thrown together. Also, gotta pick a song with original drummer Mike Portnoy. He has much better feel and showmanship. How about Beyond This Life live with Portnoy? th-cam.com/video/_0JnGAAAn_A/w-d-xo.html

    Since Kevin Moore left the band after the Awake album they lost their way, and became sterile, souless and "let's be technical and busy for the sake of it". Most of the band are excellent musicians, but they have allowed themselves to become a machine.

    Progressive metal is my favourite genre but Dream theatre don’t really do much for me apart from maybe a couple of albums. If you don’t mind harsh vocals as well as cleans. I recommend ‘Opeth’ , ‘Between the buried and me’ and ‘The Ocean’. For similar to Dream Theatre but in my eyes better ‘Haken’ are an awesome band.

    Very fair reaction A&A - Agree. Speaking for myself, I felt nothing... Empty. I REALLY tried to see where they were going, but it felt mechanical -- As you both said, individuals concentrated on what they were playing? All of them are master musicians, but there was no passion. I love classical music (symphonic & piano concertos), but even the symphony left me empty. Sorry to their great fans! I really tried... Art is an individual experience. Peace. :)

    Your reaction is precisely why I generally say this song is the worst song to introduce people to Dream Theater. I, like most DT fans, love the song, but it's the most extreme end of Dream Theater and isn't very indicative of their overall music. It's purely instrumental, completely nuts and a part of a concept album for which you lack context. This is why I wish fans were smarter about their recommendations, because I would certainly hope to bring in more people, not drive them away by confusing them with this. The whole "soulless robots" argument is quickly dismissed with countless other songs from their vast catalog. People just see performances like this one in a vacuum and assume that's all there is, when they couldn't be more wrong. Many of their longer epics take you on a journey through a rollercoaster of emotions.

    Dance of Eternity is probably the most reacted song by them on TH-cam and it either makes or breaks it for them. If you're going blind, chances are, you'll probably won't like it.
    But Dream Theater is a grower band. It will not hit you at first, but if you let it simmer, you'll realize how they weave sounds to create their music.
    Their best comes from doing long form songs where they take time to paint a picture. Dance of Eternity is just a part of the whole 'Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes From a Memory' album. Listening to an album as a whole rather than a single song is the best way to get into them.

    Yeah Dream Theater has always left me a little cold. Are they incredibly talented musicians? Yes. Are the songs technical masterpieces beyond the reach of most musicians? Yes. But I listen to it and just shrug my shoulders. "Well that took a lot of skill, I guess". Maybe it's just me but I don't hear any emotion in the playing, just one perfectly played random riff after another. I prefer my rock dirty, sloppy, and filthy.

    People always request this as a first reaction and this song is a terrible song to be an introductory song to the band. They have a lead singer and the guitar player has loads of feeling but this song is too technical to show. Count of Tuscany I'm telling you it tells a story it has intense parts and beautiful parts and really shows what they can do. Dance of Eternity is a song to listen to after you already appreciate the band and know what they are capable of. I wish people would quit requesting this and Metropolis as first time reactions. Yes it shows off their talent, but no it does not show their lyrical, vocal and feeling ability its just impressive and shows their chops which I love. Don't get me wrong I own every Dream Theater everything and have seen them live 3 times I LOVE the band. This is why I am saying this was not a good introductory song Please give them another shot.

    Here's an album track you should DEFINITELY check out. It's called _The Glass Prison_ and it's from the Portnoy era, what your drummer friend was probably talking about when he "vouched" for the band. Their "new" drummer (not really new anymore, he's been in the band for quite a few years) in the video above, Mike Mangini is VERY good, but he doesn't FIT the band as well. It just doesn't sound the same with him playing, unfortunately. But I have a feeling you'll love this song!

    The best Dream Theater songs I've heard are their covers of Rush songs. I told you they do an amazing cover of "The Necromancer" (but listen to Rush's original first), and they do a cover of "Xanadu" that sounds exactly like Rush except the singer doesn't sound like Geddy. I didn't really like this song. I don't think there are any strong hooks in this song. Like, in "The Necromancer" or "Roundabout", I can go back in my brain and replay the guitar solos - maybe not exactly, but close - and also other melodic segments of the song. The songs are etched in my brain. I can't say that about this song. Nothing got etched in my brain from this song.

If you want to get a better grasp of them I would check out songs like Learning to Live, The Mirror/Lie, The Glass Prison, and Home. Also they can definitely dish out some pure emotion, you just gotta pick the right track.

    Octavarium, please. it is their 24-minute epic song, which starts with an Instrumental, atmospheric Introduction, changes to two parts of Rush-like Prog Roc parts and then changes to two Prog Metal parts. The Grand Finale is extremely epic and I always become goosebumps over the whole body. It's my favorite song and a masterpiece!

    OK so as this is MY first exposure to Dream Theater, I thought I would try something different here: I've listened to the song WITH you guys, but have paused the video BEFORE I hear your opinions to give mine below:
    Now, straight up: they're talented musicians, no one can deny that.
    But where's the SONG? Where's the HOOK? The MELODY?
    This seemed to me to be a prime example of "Look How Fast and Technical We Can Play" but I couldn't hum one note of this back to you right now and I just got done listening to it. Because nothing STUCK. There were a bunch of transitions from one piece to another and just as I was figuring out one, they'd switch to another.
    Again this has NOTHING to do with their talent as MUSICIANS and everything to do with the piece itself.
    Other than going "wow, look how fast and technical they can play," there was nothing that stood out from it for me.
    And what's the point of having a string section back there if you can't HEAR them?
    I'd be willing to listen to more from these guys but hopefully this isn't the ONLY thing they do, or it's gonna get real boring real fast for me.
    Ok now to see what YOU guys have to say LOL.

      @@poolmaster18 look, I'll grant that maybe this piece is out of context and probably not the best first exposure to the band.
      That being said: one could take Great Gig In The Sky or Any Colour You Like out of the context of Dark Side Of The Moon and still enjoy and understand the piece on it's own terms.

Some epic masterpieces with more feeling: Octavarium and the Count of Tuscany. For heaviness: As I Am. I would suggest you find a performance with their original drummer, Mike Portnoy. Like you two, these guys appreciate a wide variety of great music, and they incorporate the music they love into their own sound (Especially Rush, Yes, Floyd, Maiden, Metallica)

    This isn't the best song for your introduction to Dream Theater because it re-enforces the idea that they are just making music to be complicated for the sake of it being complicated. This band has some of the most melodic songs you can hear, but this wasn't like that. Try Pull Me Under or Panic Attack for a first listen, but if you do the latter, don't do any other songs off the album Octavarium because that's an album that needs to be done in it's entirety because of how well it all connects conceptually! And the title track Octavarium is easily one of the greatest Progressive Rock songs in history!

    We’ve got quite a few comments talking about this not being a good first introduction to Dream Theater. I actually disagree...it was my introduction and is still my favorite. But I’m a Balkan music fan, so I’m a fan of time signatures that are a little “unusual” to those of us in the western world. This has so many changes though that it’s a real challenge to count. Can’t play it. But I think it’s their best tune. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Whatever you do, listen to more "introductory" examples.
    The day I heard my first Dream Theater album, all of my favourite musicians were put to the back of the list.
    Of course these included: Rush, Pink Floyd, Queen, Genesis, Marillion (Fish) and Metallica, plus loads more.
    Thing is, the above mentioned are all huge influences on the band and are often celebrated in their work.
    Octavarium is a virtual history lesson of influences.
    If you watch their premier live shows, you will often see a live orchestra. These shows are "specials" mainly intended for the DVD / Blu - Ray release - I've seen them live countless times and trust me - they have always been note perfect and really don't need the added glitz.
    Please, please, please persevere.
    I was 45 when I was introduced. Get in there!

    There's a line between technical skills and good taste. A friend of mine described Dream Theater a band, where everyone's playing everything they can in every song. And there's a hint of truth in that. Many new so called prog metal bands tend to turn into wanking without any musical substance. That being said, this song is from a great concept album Scenes from a Memory and from the time period, when DT was really great. This song served the concept and may sound a bit hollow alone. After a few albums they got cheese jammed in their gears or something and then also lost a lot of composing and production force, when original drummer Mike Portnoy left the band, and now a days they're turning the same wheel on and on.

  • @CompleteProducer84
    @CompleteProducer84 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome thanks guys! I feel like a lot of reactors do this song as their first DT song, but it's not the best one because it sadly falls in line with the myth that this band is only wankery. The reality is while DT does have some overly technical songs, they also have some of the most grand and emotional music in their catalog. If you can ever do any longer songs, Octavarium is essential.

    They have been out since 1988 and release a cd every 2 years or so they have so many amazing songs it's hard to choose. Just stay away from anything off the double astonishing cd because that is....well, I don't know what that is. LOL. Sort of Ziggy Stardust meets MR. Roboto. Also, most of their songs are well over 7 minutes so the general rule with them is not to choose any of their shorter songs. Now they do have a few shorter songs that are pretty good but generally speaking until you get your feet wet I suggest that. Two of my personal favorites are "In the Name of God" and "Home." "I also love "A Change of Seasons" as it's a similar but better song than this one with singing. But if you can do the live versions of these songs as they are extended and just better to me. Not that the studio versions are not good. They are very good. Just the live version are better. Which generally the case for all of their songs. I better stop now as a hundred other songs are popping into my head to suggest. Also, amazing to me that so many people say they have no feeling. Guess we're not listening to the same songs. I actually believe some people say this because they just like to find something wrong with musical excellence and thats all they can come up with. that or the singer's voice. I do agree however that they are much more interesting with Portnoy on drums. It's not the drumming in itself to me as both are amazing. Portnoy contributed to the songs in many other ways this drummer dosn't. And the songs are less interesting to me once he left. Still good though just not as good.
