hey guys! thank you for the incredible support on this video! wanted to answer some frequent comments down here~ Q: Does Nightshade/Glaze cost money? A: No, it is free, however it does require a compatible GPU on Windows. Q: Won't the scrapers just find a way around this? A: Yes, but just like anti-virus technology, Glaze and Nightshade are constantly being updated and improved. Every attack on Glaze/Nightshade ends up with a better, stronger version of it. Q: This doesn't work bc scrapers will find a way to detect it and remove any poisoned images! A: That would be a good outcome as well, that would mean Nightshaded images will not end up training the AI after all! Q: This doesn't work bc scrapers will blur out the poison and AI re-upscale the image! A: Any attempt to remove the artifacts Nightshade adds also removes good image info that the scrapers are looking for. If they 1: notice that the image is poisoned, which is an if, and 2: put in the computing power to try to deglaze or remove poison, they are also compromising the information they're trying to scrape. Either way, the images are much less useful to the generator, and its more expensive for them. Q: AI scraping is fair use, not stealing! A: So far, it's looking like the law doesn't agree with you on that. www.theartnewspaper.com/2024/08/15/us-artists-score-victory-in-landmark-ai-copyright-case Q: AI is inevitable! Stop resisting, you simple artist! In one year this technology will be a cyberpunk god and you will be a wage slave!!!!111! A: Okay, chill out with the villain monologues. People said the same thing when artists complained about NFTs, that they'd just be a part of our lives and we could opt in or get steamrolled, and guess what actually happened? Let's just say I'm glad I didn't put a down payment on some epic apes.
One thing I dislike about ai is the amount of it infecting pinterest, like if I look up a haircut I want a picture of a real person, not an ai picture with questionable physics?
I looked up fungus on lemons the other day, and so many images generated by ai. I have no idea why anyone would even generate that. Most of them ended up looking like grapefruits.
i know it sucks so bad. i used to use pinterest so much and it was so fun, but now i cant get good reference images or anything because of just the insane amount of ai
something to add for other artists: do NOT announce or tag your work as “glaze” or “nightshade,” it’s most effective when thieves are completely unaware of the fact that your art is glazed or shaded.!!
Do you think it would work the other way around? like if i cant use nightshade, would just using it as a tag help protect my art at all? Edit: thanks for the advice everyone! Also weird to see the ai bros in the comments...guessing they did not actually watch the video 🧐
@@nyctori i heard ai bros will use art tagged with glaze or nightshade for training something that removes it, idk if sending art that has not used either of those would mess up the model but they would probably feed it to an ai generator after using it
the only people using ai just wanna get rich off of it, that why its a bubble whichll burst. once they realise people dont like ai and they wont be able to make much off of it, theyll drop using it.
@@GHOSTYMPA one thing I don't get with this sentiment is that slop existed well before AI, the amount of slop on the internet has not increased like, at all, its just AI slop now instead of underpaid 3rd world country worker slop
IIRC, the conversation was actually about 3D animation, not AI. Miyazaki actually stuck to his point about not liking 3D animation and had his new film, The Boy and the Heron, be traditional 2D.

They cant see past their own point of view, so to them all art is is just something to be looked at, not truly appreciated. They've never been able to create their own art, so they think its great to finally be able to "create" whatever they want, without having to spend years learning to create it themselves. Its like commisions, but free, and without having to embarrass yourself asking someone to create what you want. From that perspective, it seems great, but again they lack the ability to see other peoples perspectives. They dont realize that art isnt some mindnumbing, meaningless task, that only exists to look pretty for other people, its a form of self expression and creativity, as well as a demonstration of ones' skill and practice.
@@jc_art_ hm yeah that does make sense. Commissions are just so much nicer because you get to support a real person- I wish the AI bros would understand that human creativity is valuable and that AI is doing a lot of harm, and that the process of art is just as important as the result.

"Art" means two things. One of them is expressing yourself in a creative way. The other is the product of said work, which is made to, basically, market something else. AI is replacing #2. It's not taking your hobby. It's taking your job. Which doesn't make it innocent, but it is _not_ creative work in the same way.
@@hundvd_7 Where would the creativity even be, if you would not even be in charge of the process? You're still not creating anything, you're not being “Creative” by definition, you're just the final step for a machine to staple some stuff it's stolen together with no sense or reason behind it. There's no glory, no value behind relying on a glorified prompt image generator to express yourself, for you would not even be expressing yourself in the first place
@@vivi7645would someone that drew someone else's character still be creative? They're essentially stapling some stuff they've stolen together. How are they expressing themself by drawing the exact thing someone else drew? Technically they did create but I'd question its creativity by your definition.
@@mcnichoj18 No, that's not what I was referring to. With this I meant those who believe that using AI and writing a prompt requires just as much creativity as making an art piece, may it be fanart, original, digital or oil on canvas; It's the act of creation itself that doesn't exist in AI art (Which fanart does have, so long as it isn't straight up tracing)
With all this new ai stuff, I’ve grown a very strong appreciation for newer artists because of well, ai won’t replicate that, and it shows that theres still people that want to actually draw and learn art
me too! it’s crazy, i brought this up to someone on reddit and they thought i was lying. non artists truly don’t understand the joy of watching a skill like art blossom and develop over time, and now it just adds that human touch to see a beginner’s choices and mistakes.
That's so real. I would give the world to the art babies out there who are trying to express themselves and learn without restraints! Humans were meant to live, not beat down for the sake of another dollar in their pocket.
Something interesting im figuring out is AI has a difficulty doing pixel art thats CLEAN and crisp. Maybe adding a glitch effect to some art might make it super hard 4 ai !!
A lot of the pro AI "art" crowd say crap like "we're Democratizing art" which doesn't make any sense, art is a skill not a political system. They'll also claim to be "getting back at low effort artists" like the people who put moldy cheese or stapled together cardboard boxes into art museums, but those aren't the artists they're stealing from.
and theyve clearly never taken an art history class or done a lick of research on the modern, postmodern, and contemporary art movements. because i guarantee you that moldy cheese and those stapled together cardboard boxes have a meaning and importance to them that these people will never be able to comprehend.
@wren8423 I mean I didn't comprehend them either but at least the shark made from thousands of layers of carefully broken glass next to those 2 exhibits was neat.
@@counterzero2377 “Democratization” usually refers to making some field more accessible by lowering the barrier to entry. For example: Photography used to be a very specialized profession. You needed very large and expensive equipment, and typically needed your own studio. You needed to also know how to properly take photos and develop them. This meant that it was solely the domain of people wealthy enough to afford the massive startup cost and could spend the time to learn the laborious process. However, as technology progressed, cameras got smaller, more affordable, and easier to use. This made it a lot easier for people to get into photography, especially at an amateur or a hobbyist level. Nowadays all you really need is a disposable camera (or your smartphone if you already have one) to do photography. Professional photographers still exist, but now you’re paying for their expertise, access to their more specialized equipment, etc. The term is a buzzword in tech circles because many fields have been democratized through tech products. Publishing got democratized through Microsoft Publisher and Word, and website building can be considered democratized through stuff like WordPress and other tools. This is what AI art products are pitching: that they are “democratizing” art by lowering the barrier to entry. Of course, this is disingenuous as art really doesn’t have much of a barrier to entry: all you really need is pencil and paper. Even digital art can be done with something like Paint. Side note: when talking about democratization, the people pitching these technologies often position themselves as underdogs rebelling against an “elite” who are gatekeeping a field by intentionally making it hard to get into. Whether they are being genuine or if they’re just trying to sell you something varies pretty heavily.
I'd argue that it's industry more than wealth. Wealth is a dick measuring contest, and being able to say you hired a prominent artist to work for you is a big dick move. Industry however, wants to save as many pennies as it can and couldn't care less how detrimental it is to society.
We used to dream of a world where the grunt work is automated so we have more time do dedicate to the pursuit of knowledge and beauty. What we got was having knowledge and beauty automated by a soulless entity incapable of comprehending either, so we have more time to dedicate to grunt work.
Grunt work is still required. AI is a tool for getting a basis to build from. Submitting an AI output as a finished work without finishing it is career suicide.
AI, including generative AI, is an amazing step towards the former. It's just that some imbeciles and greedy leeches are trying everything in their power to steer it in the other direction, the latter, to further grow their riches at the cost of everything else. The soullest ones are the humans, AI is perfectly capable of being beneficial to art and artists when used right, and an amazing technology when you understand it at even surface level, which 99% of people don't, whether they are pro or anti AI.
@@Dice-Zbut even the former is such a dark path as things are going now; automating gruntwork is already happening, what with the way they’re slowly substituting things like factory assembly, restaurant serving, delivery, etc with machines. The issue? The job market isn’t changing in a positive way to reflect that: instead of allowing the humans that used to have to do gruntwork to pursue bigger and better things all it’s doing in our current society is pushing those people into poverty and homelessness
Except AI will take the "grunt work" too. The very idea of humans competing for an income, isn't compatible with automated intelligence, that will continue to improve.
"for this one i'm gonna use my own style as a tag, i know my art has already been fed into these machines, so if i gradually start feeding them bad info attached to my name, it will break them eventually; i'm gonna do this randomly after this video as well, so hopefully one day a request for my art-style will put out pure mush." man having to hear this is so depressing
The part i hate even more than it replacing artists is the misinformation. I once had to explain to my grandma that peacock chicks do NOT get their tail feathers in until theyre much older. Somehow stuff that should be COMMON SENSE is just forgotten because a little peacock looks cute with its impossibly tiny feathers. Thank you poisoning the scrapers!
I've had similar things happen to me because of all of the misinformation ai has made. Had to explain many times to my parents that something wasn't actually real.
The other part that I hate is the laziness (I mean, reaching the point of having AI write your AI prompt is a new level, but still...): far too much of their bullshit is obviously terrible... but they don't veto it.
I mean, that's always been happening with edited and photoshopped pictures (which are surprisingly easy to do yourself at that level of quality! Clone tool my beloved). Do educate your family, especially older people, on AI and editing in general. Help them generate things themselves. Show them some inconsistencies. Show them some really really good AI art too, the kind with almost no errors. The kind that you have to use specialised tools to identify. You haven't been able to trust everything you see for years now. It's just more prominent and changes rapidly, which some older people can't keep up with.
Think this is likely the real reason the elitist think tanks are supporting ai generated content: Since they can’t consistently, successfully influence our behavior through propaganda, they now want to obfuscate all manner of truth and evidence in all forms to confuse and divide us even more
You know, if I were to give a silver lining to all this, it’s that it has given me a way deeper appreciation of human made art. Human made art is so much more interesting now because I can recognize its intentionality. It is so much more noticeable now that I’ve seen what art looks like without any creative process.
I make AI art that is just as much human made as a photograph or a digital rendering. I do agree that the vast majority is lazy and flaccid and boring, just please be aware that not all of it is.
when you see people in commenst asking "what art style is this?" or "what is this art style called?" so they can type it into their generators, you should ALWAYS respond "hi! this style is typically called Gratrunka"
@@mauro27279 can you tell me what it is so i dont have to look it up? I expect its something cursed, so just explain in vague allusions if you arent able to just say what it is
It's comforting to know that even when AI is rampant, even if it becomes more "acceptable", people will always make art. Nothing is going to stop some people from expressing themselves, it's a part of humanity. I love that about us.
(Sarcasm) Oh my god, an ai that can draw for me, make music for me, make videos for me, play videogames for me so i can finally do my dishes, laundry, hoovering, taxes and finally do all the paperwork that i was putting away for so long, ah, what a dream
YES!! The fact that these super rich fucks are putting out “AI can do the things we don’t want to do”, then say “they’ll make music and art for us, isn’t that great!”, it just shows what they really value, and not to mention put focus on how AI can take away the things that give humans joy, making it so people can’t do these things, or compete. AI could be actually useful, but it’s just being used to harm others and mass produce bullshit.
I've said it before, this is a capitalism problem, not an ai problem. If people weren't being disenfranchised by it ai is not a bad tool. You want to spend your time making art? Great! Do that! It wouldn't matter if someone with 0 skill can make a facsimile using ai, because you don't need to profit for survival if we don't have capitalism, and your stuff will still be yours. No one and nothing can take that from you. Your video game example is actually a great one of ai as a tool! Do you love the narrative of a choice-driven game, but can't engage with combat mechanics? Us a bot to play the combat! You get to engage with the game in the way you want, without having to sacrifice your time. No one is making people use it or not use it, so only use it on the stuff you personally don't want to do. Under capitalism, the use of ai and automation risks the lives and livelihoods of people, but those are not the problem here. The problem here is capitalism itself requiring people to do something to not die, and these tools take away more of those somethings.
I'm gonna admit something. For a month or two I got into AI art, but it honestly never got the results I wanted it to get, and, after doing a bit of research, I realized how damaging it truely is. I am trying to learn how to actually draw digitally ( I'm not good at it or naturally talented but I can see small improvements over time) and this channel has really helped me out, as I am more enclined towards a more cartoony or anime style. Thank you, LavenderTowne!
y'know i was gonna say something about a redemption arc but honestly i don't think that's accurate?? you didn't know something was harmful but then you researched it and then stopped bc you didn't want to cause damage. like that's the best possible timeline idk!! good job man best of luck on your art journey
i dont think anyone is naturally talented, just that some people have an interest in something and so they watch videos about it and learn quicker! So you can get the hang of it at your own pace just like any other artist :> Also, I'm glad you like making your own art now. :>>>>>> Ima check it out if you have any on your channel
Notice how even a Trojan horse, a trick, has so much love, effort, and time put into it. Ai can't put even half of the thought and work that was put into these drawings.
Too bad it is all for naught. Modern datasets use AI to autocaption images for their training. For Nightshade to work, the poisoned image has to have captions that correspond to the original image, thus poisoning a certain concept (image a hand). But that would not be the case because Nightshade would also confuse the autocaptioning model and it wouldn't recognize it as "image of a hand". 9/10 for effort 0/10 for effect
@@ahtoshkaaIn their paper, the have shown that autocaptioning images instead of using the existing metadata has very little impact on the poisoning attack. For that you need to understand that alightment and image generation models are designed and trained for different tasks and thus do not always match up, especially in a targeted attack like this. While there is probably a way to train a model specifically designed to filter out poisoned data, at that point, it becomes a cat and mouse game and even throwing a small wrench into large AI companies endeavours is kinda nice.
@@Ggg-lj5zz This is the same game that has always been played in the world of security. An exploit is found, and a solution is developed. My favorite image on the internet is of an AI bro freaking out because, as he was trying to generate a logo for his company, the letters on the logo kept spelling out “I just farted”. He couldn’t even go through the effort to edit it out. He had to go to one of the GenAI subreddits and complain about it. Just goes to show how truly lazy these people are

@@NaraSherko I'm sorry, but in that utopia there will be no chores, no education, no hardships and no life experiences to be gained, but the art will persist? I'm sorry, but the whole mindset of chores being something to eradicate, kills humanity.
I've never been good at drawing or art, but part of me has always passively wanted to take the time to learn. I just freeze whenever I look at a blank canvas and have no idea where to begin. AI certainly doesn't help my desire to push through that. All power to you in this endeavor, it's amazing!
If I may, a blank canvas may be intimidating, but if you have something you want to draw, which means a purpose, even a very little one, you have a direction and the blankness of the canvas becomes trivial. Even a silly little stickman is fine! It's your intent that matters, and the technical skill doesn't really matter. Kids enjoy drawing as well as cavemen and both don't care at all about their art quality and just wanted to express themselves :)
You need to do a 'wash'. Pick a colour and slap it on that canvas to stop it from being blank white. I do rough, angular coloured boxes then draw things on them for practice (the box is my background and helps break up the canvas so I can draw on it). Usually that's enough to get you to the next step.
I think there's lots of good beginner tutorials on youtube. Also, maybe don't start with a canvas, but with a pen and paper. That's probably less intimidating. I'd say either just start doodling things as a warm-up, or try to sketch an object you can see (like a potted plant of a piece of furniture). Art is like sport, it has a lot of varieties and skills that need to be learned. Repetition helps here too.
I know I'm a month late, but sometimes I draw a random scribble and turn it into whatever freaky little goblin thing my brain interprets it as :) And trust me, you're never perfect to begin with.
I love the speech you made about halfway through about the problem with AI replacing creative pursuits in general. Like you said, if we're meant to eliminate our desire to learn, our time spent on human connections, and our creative pursuits in order to "make more time," then what are we making time for? Work and brainless consumption. It's not about making life easier, it's about creating the perfect consumer in order to make more money.
personally I use ai to make illustrations for projects, but I draw the things I want on my free time. I don't like being forced to draw something and I think that's where ai shines: boring things that need to be illustrated
@@thatfishbone we could debate on what need means, as for my survival it wasn't necessary, but what I was tying to say is that I wasn't interested in the process, only the result. One example I could give you is that I needed to design a hoodie. I do not like to design clothes and the subject of it wasn't interesting either (I prefer to draw abastract art or animals) so I used ai to get the results. I rarely ever use my drawings for anything as for me, doing something for the result makes the process not fun.
and in both anyway, no they arent making the art. Else, comissioning an artist would ALSO be making art (since you effectively gave a prompt to an artist). to be fair out of practicality i think saying "I used Ai to make this" as technically correct since there is no other human in the process, but the way i see it it makes it clear you delegated the entire creative process away from yourself
ChatGPT isn't even good at making prompts either. I've tried it, it's really verbose and wordy and uses tons of words that are really vague and abstract.
@@orirune3079 I mean, there's literally no way it even CAN be good, considering it would need to know on what kinds of prompts a checkpoint was trained. Otherwise what it spews would be just gibberish to the SD you're using :P There are better ways to about that anyway, if someone would be so inclined.
@@thorveim1174 I mean I would say it's making art, but the one making the prompt or even the AI making the prompt isn't the artist, the artist is the actual AI that created art from the 1000s of art it has studied (it's dataset) actually typically human artists have a dataset of sorts also from everything they've seen and the art methods they've studied, so that's why I say the the AI is the artist, just cause it can't voice it's own opinion cause it's an image generator doesn't mean it didn't make the art, and technically the poor AI itself didn't steal the art in it's dataset, that was the humans that put the dataset together in the first place, the AI didn't search the art of its own decision, the people behind it didn't give it that ability. So no human should claim AI art as theirs, they basically asked someone or in this case something else to make it.
Techbro here: You are my hero. The whole reason i started to learn programming was so i could make games, you know, art. To create something new, share feelings, ideas, love, life. In some cases their employees develop algorythms that will replace them. What are these people thinking? I will never take part in this.
@GU-jt5fe It's because in my native language the i sound can be spelled i or y, and r is generally followed by y. Force of habit. Sometimes I forget. Believe it or not.

Not to mention deviant art. Cara is at the very least a good site that prohibits AI generated content. Granted it's at a slow startup, but better than nothing
The lovers of generative AI don't understand that being creative for most people is a hobby. It's the process. When I write or draw, it's not like I'm thinking the whole time. "When will this end? I want to see the end result!" I'm having fun, sure, not everything I make is a masterpiece, but when I look back at my work, I feel proud and happy. I think to myself, "I made it this far. And I'm doing something I enjoy." Being creative is fun. Having hobbies is nice. Life is about enjoying yourself and having fun. Also - when you want to bring your vision to life, give it a try, draw/write/make it yourself. It will make you over all happier. (At least I think)
All capitalism's fault. These neckbeards see anime girl images ad a way to gain money or likes online, they have a brain too small to comprehend what art actually is and what it actually means.

AI overlords want to generate art without putting time into it... A very backwater logic, because the joy IS creating the art. People aren't understanding this.
It's because they only see it as a product. Anyone who's ever done something creative can tell you, the journey is its own reward. You always learn something, pick up new skills when you create an art piece. “Generate a better insult” 💀💀 I’m so jealous of yall wording your arguments against AI so well, especially since this is something I’m passionate about. I really wish less people had rose colored glasses on for this awful technology
@kataris3563 agreed, as someone who has worked in the tech industry for a decade now too.. ai is genuinely terrifying. It isn't just a haha silly image generator, it's used for disgusting deepfake imagery of people who don't consent to the creation of those images, it's used for so much hatred and harassment and misinformation. It's a terrifying prospect that ai can shift something as big as the political landscape so easily because people blindly believe the internet instead of doing their own research.. ai wouldn't be so bad if it solely used open source content and stock images, copyright free material etc. rather than the intellectual property and photos of individuals. But it doesn't do that. There is no longer any possibility of ethical AI generation.
@@LatulaArts It seems like most people genuinely wish to harm artists, too. Many AI bros argue that artists just have big egos and they’re salty about no longer being “useful,” or argue that they want to scam people out of their money. They claim that the benefits simply outweigh the issues, that people just need to learn how to use it responsibly. Where have I heard those two arguments before?? I really hope this makes like the NFT craze and loses popularity. It’s such a cultlike community that worships the idea of AI being the future, that we are in desperate need of efficiency. But one of the great meanings of life is to find purpose. Why take the purpose away from skilled work? Why are we so hell-bent on avoiding one of the most rewarding and fulfilling parts of human life, when all that will be left for us is scrolling, consuming, and improving AI?
When you're at a level where you need a machine to make art for you because you could "do something else instead", you're way too far gone as a human being~
i saw a short where someone (forgort their name) described the argument of using ai to save time and not have to practice as basically the equivalent of making an ai to play video games for you. yeah, maybe it'll save you the frustration of not being able to beat that one level, but like then what's even the point of having the game? and you'll never get the satisfaction finally figuring out how to do it.
I love this analogy because it just works. video games are for fun, we cana gree on that. But grinding is mind boring so I use bots to gring. same for art: I draw things that are fun, but use ai for things that are forced on to me
@@Draconic404 instead of using ai for those things, why not just say no? If its a job, and youre using Ai to just get it over with, then youre scamming the people that hired you. If its school work that you're using Ai for, then youre ignoring the point of going to the school in the first place. You should never feel forced to draw something you dont want to. When i was in high school, i hated art class because they wanted me to make every kind of art besides the ones i wanted to make, but i didnt use Ai to just get the class for free, i just didnt turn anything in and accepted the consequences for having bad grades. If youre going to go against what people ask you to do, then atleast deny them with some dignity instead of stooping low
there's something so beautiful about how some of the earliest paintings humanity have created are of hands, while AI machines struggled with producing hands.

Ai should be used to help with tedious, boring tasks like filing taxes, or as an assistant to remind people who need the help to take their meds or when they have appointments or events. The things ai is already good at. It should free our lives of the things that keep us from doing what we want like making art, music, and telling stories. It's a tool being used for the wrong things and in ways that can really only make matters worse.
Yup and to sift emails, contracts, mathematical knowledge, make inventions available and easy to make, or in assistive technology. For the people with disabilities. everything is so expensive for them. Or to file boring documents, or in Robotics. In fact if there was really such a huge need for free images, and content. Then why not build a website, pay artists who are already underpaid the money to create on the site. And have people download that, instead of trying desperately to get a prompt done with mangled hands. Why do these investors like to pay an absorbent amount for a machine but not for people? Artists were already underpaid. Making an AI model is not cheap. They are ultimately paying more to put poor artists out of business, then they can charge people a lot.
These sorts of technologies only make me think the future of tomorrow is bleak and hopeless. It's gonna be worse than Night City in 2077. I'm happy to see you guys fight back, I am not an artist myself, but we cannot let the future be hopeless and soulless. Life is meant to be enjoyed, not done quickly.
It's not about losing faith but discarding ego. In order for humanity to expand it's capacities beyond the peaks we've already established, we must embrace the fact we may need to create tools beyond our own capabilities as we already have with heavy machinery, agriculture and construction. In the end the problem is income displacement and corporate abuse, not the tools themselves. If all art was open source, nobody would have a problem outside of ensuring credit is given - but every artist wants their art to be a walled garden, because copycats mean reduced market share mean reduced income means art becomes a hobby not a livelihood. We'll see a similar curve for the unfun jobs, it just turns out they're harder to automate than a lot of the fun stuff. Unless something drastic happens, time will remove them as a career path too. I think we might genuinely be in a transition phase to a work optional society - whether that's a good thing, depends on how people react, how options are presented for fulfilment, and how much people continue to lean in on acquisition as the end goal. Honestly, less than entirely optimistic on the latter point.

This right here. I didn't even know I cared about this until this video showed up in my recommendations, and it's the most perfect response to the problem
The other thing you can do is create really complicated prompts and force the computer to burn extra time on useless details, holding up other AI jobs. Spam the AI providers with that and force their energy and hardware bills to skyrocket. Or, take the images that are masked here and then post them to generate more inaccurate AI art, which you then use to generate yet more inaccurate AI art, etc, etc, etc. Or, you could take web advertisements and captchas that we all hate and then mislabel them so the AI thinks that stupid car commercial is a fantasy castle. Use the AI against itself.

I think Joanna Maciejewska's quote is the perfect counter to those who advocate the use of AI to free up time to do other things. "I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for AI to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes."
This quote is garbage lol. It's asking for ai to magically create solutions to what are actually issues of robotics/physical machinery. Even if ai was eventually integrated into this technology to some degree, that still doesn't solve the problem of making this tech cheap, overall functional, able to be mass produced to average people to solve these issues, etc.. The dumbest part is that we already have technological progress in making these tasks drastically easier, it's called a washing machine and a dishwasher ffs. These tasks already take minutes rather than the entire day to accomplish.
Ever since I was a really young kid I wanted to draw, but had no talent..But not even once I tried to use ai for that. I trained until my style was slightly good. If you immediately give up or refuse to learn.. You're probably not meant for arts..Or any other job...
Lets be real, I am not at all 'amazing' at art YET. But even still art is the thing in my life that brings me the most joy, and I feel sad for the future generations who may grow up using AI and never realising how fun creating things you are proud of can be.
I’m a Navajo jeweler and seeing all the knockoffs flooding the market is soul crushing. Most consumers want “the look” for a fraction of the authentic’s price. But that affects the livelihoods of thousands of already marginalized people that often live in remote areas. So it’s tough to find other jobs. Older Native artists in many mediums are telling younger ones to do something else because there’s no future in art. I’m sharing this video because it’s so awesome!!!! Maybe there’s some way to interfere with other knock offs, too.
Oh hey my uncle is also a jeweler, I've been to flea markets outside the rez with white people trying to sell "authentic" turquoise jewelry and it all looks like plastic to me. I really hope people start noticing that the fake turquoise is fake
People are wanting more bang for their buck. Preferably for 0 bucks. People finally get a cheaper/more effective option. People who used to profit on the outdated method lose money because they cannot keep up with changes. They oppose the changes. Slowly but surely most of them are outcompeted. The only ones left are those who are able to capitalise on the difference between old and new method. The new method became the new norm. This is the story of how cars outcompeted horses. History tends to repeat itself.
@@narindercatt2230 Why did you watch this video if that's your opinion? It goes directly against what was just argued, which is that not all people see profit as their priority. I work in a marketing department for a hospital and they recently got all of us licenses to the top AI programs. The head of our PR department doesn't even write his own press releases anymore. I'm a photographer and artist and i think it's gross.
The thing that really gets me about the comment saying "Let AI do it and go spend time doing stuff you want" Oh stuff I want? Like struggling to make money and survive? How about working in a grocery store for the rest of my life? That sounds terrible to me, and not at all what I want to do. But it's what I'm stuck doing right now, because it's so impossible to find jobs in art-respective fields because of AI. AI isn't allowing me to do what I want. It's forcing me to have to take any job I can get to try and scrape enough money to survive.
I mean, this is just capitalism. AI is the competition that does things faster and cheaper at the expense of artistic quality. A soulless worker with soulless creations for a soulless society, quite fitting really.
I HATEEEE WHEN AI STEALS ART. Like we spend hours on it and then you just come, steal it, and “give” it to people after taking 2 seconds to finish it. ALSO CLAIMING ITS ART ITS BULLCRAP ITS JUST STOLEN COMPUTER AJDNVOISJEFNVOIURSFNVV Also edit: good there’s a way to kinda prevent it now
It's not stealing, it's fair use. The images the AI scans aren't stored or compressed inside the program. The AI just learns the patterns of what diffrent items and descriptions look like. There are issues with AI that should be fixed by the law, like unlabelled misinfo and immoral deepfakes, but it's still transformative and useful for more harmless stuff.
@@frocco7125but that is not truly the case. If that was the case, that the AI is learning what different images look like, why do they use a bunch of artists for reference? Why would they need drawings of humans, of apples, of animals, and more, instead of just using photos of real life things? They wouldn't need to use artists or their works to learn what those things look like, if they just viewed the real life images. Because the truth is, AI 16:24 isn't merely learning what those things look like in order to understand how to draw them. It actively trues to analyze and steal what real people have drawn, and (poorly) copies and throws together a mish-mash of images. It doesn't value or understand the original art.

It's so critical to understand that art, like a good book, is in part communication from the author/artist to the reader/viewer. It is not only a form of beauty, but a form of communication. AI simply can't replace that, because it has nothing to say of itself. It only echoes the crowd
As Stephen King said, writing (and art) is telepathy. I can communicate things to you by conjuring them in your mind without having to directly describe them. A world where people consume art made by nobody, so that artists can make art enjoyed by nobody... that sounds like a dystopia. It isn't that I'm not grateful for these applications like Nightshade and Glaze, but I am frustrated with the snails pace at which legal protections are even being *considered* in regards to regulating Ai. I am glad we have these protections available, but it should not be the artists responsibility to protect themselves in this way - we should have laws that keep all of us safe. Not just from copyright theft with written and visual works, but from having our likenesses stolen the way celebrities currently are and from the spread of propaganda. I'm seeing people let their children use character Ai chat programs where ten year olds can talk to cartoon characters through phone apps and that's so incredibly dangerous not just for the child but for the voice actors having their likenesses manipulated. The entire thing is a disaster and I am frustrated with how so little is being done to protect people and regulate the use of Ai in these ways.
Voice actor here, and I could not agree more. Currently, all we really have at our disposal is a protection rider that we can have signed before agreeing to work on a project (shoutouts to NAVA for making this document available for us). This paper shield is thin - it only gives us the grounds to seek legal action against the clients themselves. In my early days I did work on one of the most popular Skyrim mods on Nexus, which had a ton of character mods scraped and dumped into Elevenlabs a little while back (and used for a LOT of NSFW mods). To this day, I have no way of knowing if my voice was stolen and repurposed, and even if it was... there isn't anything I can do about it. There's no prevention technique, no way to poison the audio file without making it unfit for broadcast quality. Any joe on the internet can just rip a file and we have nothing to protect ourselves from it.
The thing is, they do want to be viewed as an artist. It's like that guy who used AI in an art competition and is now crying about how he can't copyright 'his works'. He desperately wants people to view him as an artist to the point where he goes on pathetic rants about how people need to respect AI 'artists', and how it's so unethical that people are stealing his work (LOL). It isn't that they don't want to be artists, it's that they don't want to put in the effort to actually become one. Tech bros will never be artists because they fundamentally cannot understand that the human experience of the process is just as important as the outcome.
The problem is when a job calls for the use of an image, the company will turn to the quick and easy solution; AI generation. For people that want to keep art their hobby, AI can never take that from you.
All these ai tech bros clearly want to make pieces of art, but they believe that the process of art creation itself is some horrible slog instead of the beautiful process it is. They've married themselves to ai, a soulless, boring, unoriginal way to make "art," and thus will never know the joy that comes from finding your artstyle, admiring something you spent time on and created with your own two hands, drawing silly little doodles and showing them to your friends. It's sad, really. They can't understand the true point of art.
I’m someone who does think art is an absolute slog, but even I think AI is stupid. I want control over every little detail! Being able to simply draw something the way you want it is way better (and more efficient!) then regenerating for hours until you give up and accept whatever the AI came up with as “close enough :/“. If I could get myself to enjoy the process, instead of just being stuck with a head full of ideas, then I would be unstoppable…
@@kaleenar963 If you ask me, the best way to change your mindset is to just draw whatever you feel like drawing. Even if its not master level beautiful, as long as you're satisfied with what you made, then its all good. And the more you do this the better your art will be. Of course, Im just saying this from experience. But if you really wanna learn how to draw, just make sure you enjoy making art, because that's the beauty of it.
I don't think ai tech bros think art creation is a soulless unoriginal way per se, boring though probably, it's more like they're taking the easy way out in my opinion. Drawing, painting, sculpting, creating something takes a long time to master, and like you said, the process is beautiful as you learn to create something with your own hands, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, mastering the skills. Technology was made for convenience and to assist humans, so with how it's advancing, using AI to replicate and produce "art" is much faster. There's no need for years of learning, just type in some words and boom, an image is generated. And that's the sad part, that people want to find an easier road to do something when sometimes there isn't an easy road. Learning is a long hard task, and not everyone enjoys learning, I understand that, but it's not right to use something that you know takes someone else's work just because you don't want to learn for yourself. Wish they realized that it's okay to take it slow and start from the ground up, I mean art is as much of a hobby as it is a job, and to enjoy a hobby, you relax with it and just take your time to do it. That's what makes it fun.
As someone who uses AI to generate images, I laugh at both sides. No, I am not an artist and will never claim that I am. But neither are the hundreds of billions of cartoon / anime drawers. I uses AI to make customade images because painters (I refuse to call them artists) lacks imagination and creativity.

I know a LOT of disabled people also use their art as a job. Taking away our ability to make art for the sake of corporate greed is inherently ableist. Art is not an industry that can go through the equivalent of an industrial revolution because that's not the point. The journey of creation is more important than the end product for a lot of artists. Why would I want someone to take that away from me and make it "efficient"?
that's just my view on things, but being forced to draw things (like illustrations or logos) is just mot fun and should be kicked to ai. paintings you do willingly or any toher form of art done by creativity and not restrictions are another subject
@@Draconic404 those forms of art are typically commissioned, the artist isn't doing it for fun, they are getting paid, it's their job. delegating that to AI is taking people's jobs in an already very difficult field to get work in. not to mention it still has the same environmental harm regardless of what type of art it's being asked to generate.
Actually, the AI bros brought ableism into this discussion first. They insist that disabled people need AI to be as capable as able-bodied folks. They insist that anyone who is against AI is ableist. Truth is, the opposite is the case. AI art and its supporters are ableist and to deny that is to give them more credit than they deserve. To insist that ableism does not belong into this discussion is to turn a blind eye to their ableism. Sincerely, a visually impaired artist.

It would be cool to have a database to gather what the most common ai prompt is and then each week post the prompt for real artists to draw using nightshade! The more people doing it the better
I remember back when Photoshop became widely available and the internet suddenly panicked because "what if this photo had been edited", now we can spot a Photoshop from a mile away. I think as artists one of the best thing we can do (besides nightshading, suing, and corrupting searches) is to get familiar with what ai looks like so we dont accidentally start using ai models for reference, don't support websites that regurgitate AI, and most importantly dont model ourselves on these systems. Photoshop lead to a significant rise of eating and mental health disorders, and the only thing i can see ai art doing is distorting our perception of reality even further.
okay but someone who is good with photoshop can edit images in some ways that are very hard to detect so we really can only detect bad photoshop from a mile away
You can't spot a Photoshop a mile away... that is a silly assertion... like really silly... it depends on the quality and effort. Tons of movie CGI is completely invisible... And Photoshop leads to a significant rise of eating and mental health disorders? No... an unhealthy use of social media does... You don't need Photoshopped images for that. Retouched images are far older than Photoshop, and the issues got bad when social media got "personalized", and people share fake "real life"...
@@SioxerNikita there is a lot of stuff to do in an image to edit it properly, if you have to add objects, kinda hard since you have to match the lights, the shadow, the contact shadows (that's the most common error) reflections, deep, blend. CGI now days is kinda a of a disaster since they want to produce something in less time, which leds to the third eye of Dr.Strange
@@Voldrim359 And yet people can do edits, additions and changes seamlessly. CGI is also not a mess today, it's just the CGI studios not getting enough time. i honestly kind of like the way the stuff produced by poisoned models looks. i want to emulate the weird dreamlike effect of it in my own art but it’s difficult.
Maybe making a copy then big blurring + unsharp mask and layering it on top with a luminance blend or something might work? It has a look like some areas have expanded (blur) but then they also have extreme halos around the edges (unsharp mask, especially with the light edge turned down and the dark one turned up). Maybe some levels/curves adjustment after the blur to make it more contrasty too Unless you meant by hand in which case I'm way out of my depth :3

Yes! Please continue spreading Nightshade awareness! "Poisoned" images is probably the only way we artists can score a definitive, final victory against A.I., and spreading the word about it is half the battle!
AI communities are already aware of poisoned datasets and software like Nightshade. I can ask how to deal with a poisoned dataset right now in like 5 discords and get solutions immediately, and there are articles and videos about how to defend against dataset poisoning from over a year ago. I'm sure there have been some new developments since then, but it's not like people have slowed down when it comes to pumping out artist loras or anything. If you want to keep up with AI and those communities it's better to lurk and experiment with the boundaries yourself
@@incendas Yeah, you already usually train your models with included so called "adversarial attacks" where you have another model (like nightshade) trained simultaneously with the goal to fool your other model. I really wonder why nightshade currently should work at all for sophisticated models. There is no way stopping AI like this. Eventually we will have to deal with AI just like the invention of the Photography - for better or worse.

It took my literally decades to learn to draw (I have brain damage and complete aphantasia), so I especially despise AI art thieves and their whole "disposable creativity" mindset. Thanks for fighting back!!
The best thing about art is being able to say that you made it, even if it is really crappy. Telling a robot to make it is worse that making bad art because you at least had fun making it. Its essentially telling someone to make something for you and saying that you made it.
My interactions with the online art community have been the opposite. Can't post anything because artists are often some of the most patronizing on the internet. "Aww, it's okay, you'll learn actual skills someday!" "Maybe in five years you 'll be able to take commissions!" "So brave for posting this!" etc.
About the “people copying/drawing what you did” vs “people prompting what you drew” being similar. I’ve seen this discourse online - that people redrawing your things is basically the same kind of plagiarism. The difference is that by redrawing things *we learn* how to do it ourselves, not how to steal it the easiest way. Besides, I have had it happen that someone liked my piece enough to redraw it in their style exactly once, and I cannot emphasize enough how flattering that was!
I believe she was referring to the way some people will trace over someone else’s art and try to pass it off as their own, rather than the way some people will trace over someone else’s art as a way to practice
Exactly. Art is about developing muscle memory, learning what something is supposed to look like and replicating it in your own style. Yes, new artists use art they like as inspiration and try to replicate it, but the difference between that and telling an AI to do the same thing is that the human learns from the process. They develop a style based on their own abilities and they retain those skills and use them to create original works. The art I make is evocative of the styles I like, but it's still visibly different. Maybe I couldn't get the eyes to look good, so I changed them in a way that's easier for me to draw consistently. Maybe the colors were a bit too complex, so I started making mine flatter. Every decision is made to tailor the art to my own preferences and abilities. AI prompters don't learn shit, nothing is gained.
Hey. Just wanted to say thank you for this video. Just such a genuine and honest breath of fresh air. You reassured me in what I have deeply been feeling all this time and haven't been able to put into words. About these models, their "use cases" and the people who use them. Thank you for that, thank you for being so genuine.
Me too I felt something deeply antisocial about IA... There is already a problem with lack of proper communities and IA will make it worse. I am not much of a writer and I met friends who can't really draw so we helped each other I drew a comic according to their script and other friend wrote story with my characters. With IA I can "do everything my self" so why do I need to cooperate with other people, right? 🤦♀️
hey guys! thank you for the incredible support on this video! wanted to answer some frequent comments down here~
Q: Does Nightshade/Glaze cost money?
A: So far, it's looking like the law doesn't agree with you on that. www.theartnewspaper.com/2024/08/15/us-artists-score-victory-in-landmark-ai-copyright-case
Q: AI is inevitable!
Let's just say I'm glad I didn't put a down payment on some epic apes.

something to add for other artists: do NOT announce or tag your work as “glaze” or “nightshade,” it’s most effective when thieves are completely unaware of the fact that your art is glazed or shaded.!!

to the people that support Ai, *Art* is the "boring stuff" that they want to be done. The other is the product of said work, which is made to, basically, market something else.
AI is replacing #2. It's not taking your hobby. It's taking your job.
Which doesn't make it innocent, but it is _not_ creative work in the same way.

The hell does "Democratizing art" even mean anyway?
@@counterzero2377
“Democratization” usually refers to making some field more accessible by lowering the barrier to entry. For example:
Photography used to be a very specialized profession.

We used to dream of a world where the grunt work is automated so we have more time do dedicate to the pursuit of knowledge and beauty. What we got was having knowledge and beauty automated by a soulless entity incapable of comprehending either, so we have more time to dedicate to grunt work.
THIS!

The very idea of humans competing for an income, isn't compatible with automated intelligence, that will continue to improve.

I saw a picture of a kangaroo today with a chest high pouch. Talk about cursed images! Baby sling photos must have confused it.
Think this is likely the real reason the elitist think tanks are supporting ai generated content:
Since they can’t consistently, successfully influence our behavior through propaganda, they now want to obfuscate all manner of truth and evidence in all forms to confuse and divide us even more
You know, if I were to give a silver lining to all this, it’s that it has given me a way deeper appreciation of human made art. Human made art is so much more interesting now because I can recognize its intentionality. It is so much more noticeable now that I’ve seen what art looks like without any creative process.
That's true!!! I was already an art enjoyer (and an artist), but this made me appreciate the thought, intention, and effort of art even more!

Never, ever forget, that the first people the wealthy invested in replacing were the artists and authors

I'm sorry, but in that utopia there will be no chores, no education, no hardships and no life experiences to be gained, but the art will persist?
I'm sorry, but the whole mindset of chores being something to eradicate, kills humanity.
I've never been good at drawing or art, but part of me has always passively wanted to take the time to learn. I just freeze whenever I look at a blank canvas and have no idea where to begin. AI certainly doesn't help my desire to push through that. All power to you in this endeavor, it's amazing!
atleast blender you start with a box
its just harder to learn for most
If I may, a blank canvas may be intimidating, but if you have something you want to draw, which means a purpose, even a very little one, you have a direction and the blankness of the canvas becomes trivial.
I know I'm a month late, but sometimes I draw a random scribble and turn it into whatever freaky little goblin thing my brain interprets it as :)
And trust me, you're never perfect to begin with.

I rarely ever use my drawings for anything as for me, doing something for the result makes the process not fun.
I love how they went from “it’s art because I wrote the prompt!” To “use ai to make the prompt.”
and in both anyway, no they arent making the art.

There are better ways to about that anyway, if someone would be so inclined.

The final destruction of human communication, since apparently social media wasn't enough.
And when I use AI to create art to convey "big tiddy anime girl doing X pose with Y outfit and Z background in Q colors" im communicating what is in my head to others.

Right? And now you CAN get art WITHOUT being OR needing an artists? Isn't it wonderful?
The "replacing your family member with a robot" was such a good metaphor. I'm going to use that.
For some, that might be preferable. 😜
Don’t worry, there’s already a girlfriends being made , that alone says enough about some of these people
That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard tbh
All these ai tech bros clearly want to make pieces of art, but they believe that the process of art creation itself is some horrible slog instead of the beautiful process it is. They've married themselves to ai, a soulless, boring, unoriginal way to make "art," and thus will never know the joy that comes from finding your artstyle, admiring something you spent time on and created with your own two hands, drawing silly little doodles and showing them to your friends. It's sad, really. They can't understand the true point of art.
Just lazy sacks of meat
In a college class of mine that is supposed to be teaching skills, and recognizing what to do in certain situations, I look up during a quiz and see that half the class is copy/pasting the quiz into chat gpt. On an open note quiz. Way to learn!

@@wontonschannel If AI companies would ethically source the images they feed their AI, then you could still have your fun. Everybody would win (except the companies who might make a little less money)
I want AI to do things like dishes and laundry so I can do art and write. I'm so glad people like you exist
That sounds even more Lazy, ngl
