48 HOURS in the GREAT SAND DUNES (things to do in the spring time)

- We got our COVID shots just one day before entering the Great Sand Dunes, which unfortunately, did steal away a bit of our energy. However, we were still able to complete an 8-mile hike (not really sure how we did it) to a lookout of some beautiful rolling hills, and we were also able to enjoy the refreshing water of the Medano Creek. We’re so happy that we made our way back down to central Colorado to enjoy the dunes- we almost skipped it!

Oh my! I camped out on the dunes back in.... 1997 or 98 and a storm came up, thunder and it was blowing, it was so scary! We packed up in the middle of the night and hiked back to the campground. But it was beautiful. OH! There ...now I have to check a map. Ok, I used to do a weekend drive out of Denver to Nederland which was charming and had a nice little coffee shop. Now that was a million years ago... but I drove down out of the mountains into Boulder, going by some beautiful creeks with large rocks and pools for swimming in, and then to Lafayette. That town had a small Irish bar and a family style atmosphere and good music, but during prohibition, as it was a mining town, the miners dug tunnels from bar to bar under the town and the back room had a big skylight. I used also to go down south of Colorado Springs and do some hiking up in the mountains...I had a small group of friends, also from Alaska, and we used to meet up and have movie nights, pot lucks and hike together. I only lived there about three years, right at the end of the 90s, right after university.

I stopped here last Sept but only had 3 hours of daylight left, so we just climbed the dunes and did the Cumbres & Toltec RR the following morning (after it snowed). I'd like to return at some point and do some backpacking in the Sangre de Cristos.

i’m buying a van in the next few months and thinking about a ford transit connect, how does it affect you to not be able to stand up?
It definitely took some getting used to. If we were planning on living full time in a van indefinitely. We’d probably go for something bigger.
