- Creating your own unique fabric backgrounds to stitch on is a really fun and creative thing to do. A well chosen background fabric can really enhance your piece of stitching or embroidery. Sometimes what you would like is just not available at all...
The good news is that you can paint your own custom fabric using either acrylic paints or Inktense blocks as I am using here.
Painting fabric is a very different technique than painting on paper. In this video I'm showing you how I paint beautiful pieces of watercolour-like background fabric. Use the resultant pieces for sewing and stitching.
Lovely results are easy to achieve.... just have a go and see what happens!

🖌️🎨
Thank you for this video--so very helpful and is certainly inspiring me to have a go! What a gift you are to each of us!
💐
Thank you Marion ❤
Hi Marion, You’ve added so much to my world. I’m so glad I’ve found you. Everyday I try to watch one of your video’s. Creative people are happy when creating. Creating is a God given gift I believe. God smiles when I say this, because after all he is a creator also. I know I speak for many people when I say you bring joy into to our world. God Bless you. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this lovely message 💐☺️
Thank you Marion! 😊❤
Love this technique.
Fabulous idea.
Wow, such beautiful effects….it looked like a landscape, I could see the sky and fields even before any stitching
It's very free creatively 🖌️🎨
Lovely colours - look forward to seeing what you create from these
Your smocked top looks lovely on you!
Love your smocking. You are so talented.
Absolutely beautiful! 🎉❤xx
Oh look! You're wearing your smocked top 😊 great
I've worn it a lot since I made it... It's already been washed twice!
Yes indeed!
Love this! Thanks so much for this great tutorial. And your top looks lovely!
Love it
Beautiful. Thank you so much. ❤
Lots of fun Marion! Thanks for sharing all your tips!❤
Thank you - great idea to create unique backgrounds
👍🖌️🎨
Such an easy way to create wondrous backgrounds for projects! Delightful!!
Thank you Marion..... the background fabric looks so interesting adding extra interest to a flat fab....🥀🥀🥀
It makes such beautiful effects
Marion, it is so lovely of you to share your technique for this with us, and the tip about the grease proof paper. Thank you for sharing. Enjoy the day! Catherine
It works really well 👍
I wish we were neighbors, Marion, but since I live in New York I at least have your videos! Thank you for sharing your time with us.
That's a long way away 😊
Oh Marion that is just beautiful. I love the colors & how to do that. The spots especially. Thank you for showing us.
👍
Lovely blouse you are wearing!
Thanks 👍
Ooooh that was fun! Will definitely be trying the technique.
I agree, you can’t buy fabric like that. Perfectly muted for stitching over. Thank you Marian.
Such a lovely tutorial! Love your shirt!
❤😊
This is a great technique thank you for sharing it with us!
❤️❤️
Thank you another great technique can’t wait to try this. 😊❤
🖌️
I love this sort of thing! Some years ago, I discovered a method of using Inktense blocks to do leaf rubbings, a bit like brass rubbing, and made a beautiful cushion cover. If you lay a leaf with lovely veins underneath your fabric and gently rub over the fabric with the side edge of the block, it picks it up beautifully. I did this dry, then sprayed it with a light plant spray to bring out the colours. Lastly I ironed it to set the colours. It worked a treat! Then you can embroider over the top, but it’s pretty on its own. 😊. I love your smocked top. Thank you.
Marvellous idea!
Thanks for sharing this extra idea! I'll try it. I love leaf prints and rubbings😍 Your technique could be done on top of a first muted layer of colours, such as what Marion produced in this tutorial. Textile art is such a fun thing🎉
That definitely sounds lovely.. lots of possibilities 👍
Thanks so much for sharing, I’ve always wanted to try my hand at painting, I’m excited to try this. 🪡🧵♥️
Thanks for the crumpled paper tip. Such a good one❤️
👍
This video is great! I have been wanting to try this technique and you always explain how to do things so well. Looking forward to giving it a try.
Lovely process, Marion. You have cheered me up immensely. I'm recuperating from a long stay in hospital that had me thinking my creative days are over. Your videos are just what I need to get my mojo back. Thank you so much.
Oh I hope you're recovering well Ann. Sorry to hear you've been in hospital.
Maybe you just need to get some paint splashed about on something and feel a bit of artistic abandon! Enjoying the process without necessarily making a 'thing'....
What a great technique! Thank you Marion
🖌️🎨
Love the effects you’ve achieved 🥰😊
I love this! Thank you for sharing! You’re wearing your smocked top! Very nice!
☺️👍
I really like the “wet-on-wet” application of the colors👍 Great suggestion to crumping up the grease proof paper/parchment baking paper! I love the “mopping up” of colors on cloth👍👍. Very revealing on how the colors dry so much lighter! Can’t wait to see what you are envisioning for the embroidery 👍👍🌹Thank you🎉
Arriving Sunday!☺️
Marion, I bought myself some after seeing you use yours. I have used mine on lace and doilies also. They work beautifully. Looking forward ro this project.
Yes lace always looks lovely once painted. 🖌️
Putting this on my summer play time list! Thanks Marion!
☺️👍
Marion you are Fantastic, I love your creative mind and process and thinking beyond what is standard. You give me so many ideas and open doors in my mind. Thank you thank you thank you 🙏🦋🦋🦋
I'm so happy you enjoyed watching. It's exciting when new ideas take hold and you just want to do something!
Thank you for the extra video. The fabric looks lovely.
Your lilac smock looks lovely! Thanks for this demo. Such a variety of effects simply produced and always the mystery of how will it look when it’s dry! Love it!
😊🖌️
I love the colors. And I agree, it is so much fun to paint your own fabric. Did a little flower doll and a moth last week. Doll is finished, the moth maybe tomorrow. Have a nice weekend Marion.
Thank you Marjan. I'm interested in the moth you're making... 🤔
Marion, it is not a "real"moth it is a fantasy one. About 2 weeks ago I followed 20 workshops from Zen Stitching. 20 different ladys who teached something in 1 week. The moth was one of the workshops. It was fun to make and to follow every one even i know a lot of the technics. I think it is on Instagram tomorrow.
What a great idea to use the paper to pick up the paint. I love the effect. Must try myself next time I need a pretty background for a project ❤ Thanks Marion!
😅👍🖌️
I love Marions vidios so practical and interesting x
Thank you...😊
Lovely Marion 😊
Hi Marion! I love that technique of laying the colour on the paper and making a print on the fabric. I’ve not tried that way before, so look forward to giving it a go.😊
It works really well and you get a surprise at the resultant patterns that are created 😊🖌️
Hello Marion. This was a really interesting video - thank you. My mother was a professional artist and crafter. She would have loved to have seen what you have created as a basis for future projects. And I, along with your other viewers, now get the chance to watch how you use these pieces of cloth and form them into wonderfully artistic art forms which, I for one, will no doubt envy! Listen out for lots of “ooooh’s” and “ahhhhh’s” coming your way.
☺️🖌️🎨💐
Thanks for the video Marion. Looking nice in your smocked top
Oh Marion! I felt as if I'd just stepped into a Monet watercolour canvas as you presented this....wow such a creative generous soul you are to share and teach all that you do. I want to run out and buy some Inktense now. Actually I think I own some Soft Pastels, a similar product I believe to Inktense, something my children used when they were little. Love that you do your own unique process with these, and those colours are just indescribably beautiful. Sincere thanks all over again Marion - you are such a sweetheart.
🖌🎨💖
🖌️☺️
This is great…I d only ever thought of various types of dyes to creat background fabrics…this is a much faster way of creating a cloth to work on. It s good to have different methods and always lovely to watch your creative videos Marion. Thankyou🧡
I'd love to do more with natural dyes. But this is good for me as I can get a pretty and colourful piece of fabric to use straight away...
Thank you Marion! This video is extremely useful and very tempting. I think I'll gift myself some Inktense and give it a try. ❤
Super 😊
Btw you look great in your smocked top !!!
Thanks... I've been wearing it quite a bit..
Such pretty background! Your smocked dress looks lovely ❤
💐
Thanks!
Thank you Sheryl 💐
Adore working with Inktense. Not tried having paper underneath, so I’ll give that a go.
Thank you😀
☺️👍
Thanks so much for the inspiration, Marion! I particularly love the supposed' back side. I enjoy watching your channel and look forward to my retirement that starts next week to be able to play with fabric and paper. Again, THANKS!!
Ooh.. happy retirement! I hope you enjoy getting to do all the things you want to 😊💐
Your smocked top looks lovely on Marion. The soft purple color suits you. Love the idea of doing your background with paint🎉❤
😊💐
Marion I have used the inktense blocks for my watercolour work when travelling but this gives them a whole new future! Wonderful backgrounds !
🖌️👍
Thank you! I bought inktense recently and can’t wait to have a go!
👍
Thank you Marion! I have been asked to do an owl embroidery and have been thinking about a back ground fabric. I think I will give this a try.
You definitely should do 👍
Lovely use of the inktense blocks. Water is what locks these blocks onto fabric and paper. Try using a spray bottle to wet your cloth. I love building up colours then placing scrunched glad wrap on top, let this dry will take a while I leave overnight and in one case forgot and left for two days, then your fabric will have fun shapes kind of like rocks or boulders very fun. Just a thought if you haven’t tried this. Have a lovely week.
Can the fabric be wash and still keep its colors?
@@Lifecombing inktense blocks are permanent on fabric. So yes can be washed. You need to activate with water. Have fun and experiment. I’ve also used posca pens and these stay on the fabric quite nicely for a brighter cleaner look.
I'm thinking glad wrap is cling film here 🤔
I've never used that technique but I'll be trying it now thank you.
I've tried with a spray bottle before but I think I just like using the fabric really wet 💦
Love your smocked blouse.🙂
Marion this has been very helpful to me. I've used my inktense blocks once and never knew what else to do with them. I will be trying this. Your fabrics turned out wonderful. Thank you.
I'll be making another short video about how to use them in a more controlled manner too...
Your smocked top looks beautiful. Thank you for sharing this wonderful demonstration ❤
Thank you, such a lovely thing to do.
Love love love this! Thank you so much for sharing! So many possibilities with this! ❤
Definitely ☺️
Thank you Marion, your fabrics are beautiful. I have used Inktense on silk and I will be cutting into it for appliqué work before embroidery. Your tutorial was so helpful, thanks again.
That's sounds lovely. Silk always makes the colours shine...
Thank you Marion for your video as always. These blocks look amazing. I So agree it would be impossible to buy this fabric in the tones and concentration of colour that you may want. I am saving hard for these . They are a lot cheaper in some other countries but when you add postage you will not be saving that much. Your top is lovely and so nice to see it again.
They do work really well...but you can use craft acrylic paint instead. It's what I used to use before I had these. I've also used the tester pots of wall paint too if the colour was right....
Your smocked top looks super
Thank you...
I have my inktense pencils and sticks from when I made cards … LOVE this dying project ❤❤❤
👍
Thank Marion, I’ve just gone and bought ink tence block paints and I’m excited to used them in my slow stitching
Ooh.. lovely!
Thank you for sharing your technique, it's interesting to see how much lighter it is when it dries. I will be trying this soon and curious to try it with some flower pounding!
Excellent!
You can get darker shades... it's just not what I particularly wanted for the piece I was making...
Very unique & beautiful results!!!❤😊
Oh a new world to play in. Going to try this. Hugs and blessings
Great tutorial and tip to help any of our embroidery projects. It will definitely give you a unique background. I have purchased some Inktense and I like using them when I get the chance to try them out. I did copy your ribbon foxgloves and painted them with Inktense. It was for a card for my friend. She was really pleased with it. I couldn’t really take the credit, it was your idea, but I enjoyed doing them. Very often find your tips useful and they give me the confidence to have a go. Thank you for sharing your ideas and tips.
Oh it's lovely to hear of your foxglove project.. I'm so happy you enjoyed stitching them💐
I watch all your videos and find them all very interesting. I'm now doing the wreath on a good fabric so I can frame it when it's done. I'm definitely going to try painting fabric.
I hope you enjoy it 👍🖌️
Since first seeing you using this technique...I have tried it ( with acrylics ) for my embroideries also. I love it. The textures and colours you get certainly lends itself to all sorts of creativity. Thank you Marion for sharing a tutorial just on this subject. 😊
Thanks. I thought a couple of stand alone videos would make them easier to find. Some of my earlier videos have techniques in them that end up being hidden because they weren't the main subject...
I really enjoyed watching this Marion your a very clever lady and always show interesting techniques to try, and your top looks lovely on you😊
☺️👍
Thanks for a great tutorial on the Inktense paints. I got a small set after watching you use it a few times on your embroidery projects. Gave me some ideas about something I wanted to make. I have already used them to fix a bleached spot on a quilt that was already made, and I was able to blend it in quite well using your techniques with the water. I’m really excited to get to use them and try using them in my embroidery projects. Thanks for the inspiration!
That's a great use of them. I've done something similar on a repair on a blouse 👍😊
Marion your creativity continues to amaze me and the fabric painting is so new for me. Such an easy and effective way to make something so very pretty and individual. xx
The resultant fabric can be used in all sorts of projects 😊
Hi Marion, I think I'll get my 9 yr old granddaughter to paint some cloth for me next time she visits, I think she'll enjoy that & it will make the cloth all the more precious for me to use 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 It will be the first time the Inktense paints will be used, I got them really cheap at an op shop YEARS ago !!!!! Hope they are still ok to use 🤞🤞🤞Your top looks lovely 😍😍😍TFS 😘😘😘
I'm sure they'll be fine and she'll have a great time...
Remember that they are colourfast once dry so make sure her clothes are covered up in case of splashes!
You’re so right. Unique fabric like none other. Beautiful. 💖💖💖
smocked top looks good. I think the blue fabric would be great for scenery trees and bird's because it already looks like that. Think the other piece is really nice also the splatter one is neat looking forward to what you put on them
😊👍🖌️
I really like this look very artsy looking ❤❤
Thank you marion, this is amazing, your fabric has turned out beautiful and you're wearing your smocked top and you look fabulous in it. ❤ Ann 🏴
☺️
Hi Marion, thank you for your tutorial on painting background, I got myself a set of Inktense colours after seeing them on another of your videos. Very helpful for me as preparing for a class next month on designing our own embroidery and it includes creating our own backgrounds. I'm so excited about it 😊
I'm pleased it was helpful 😊🖌️
yes, I like adding the water first and then adding the color. Looks softer. Thank you so much for the help on using the ink tense, I have them also, but have not got a chance to use them yet but I will as I am working on my mermaid piece for now.
Mermaids... Wonderful 👍
Your top really looks great, Marion,I like the colour! I recently bought myself a box of inktense blocks, and I can't wait to try it myself.
The colours are marvellous ❤❤
👍
Great video such a good idea, thanks for sharing. Will definitely have a go with some water colour paints I have. Xx
I've never done this with watercolours. You'll have to experiment to see if the fabric will be washable. Maybe you don't need it to be and then that will be okay. It's just if you are going to use the technique on something that will need to be cleaned.
This was fun and I love your results too!! I have published many videos on coloring fabric using different products, for use in fiber and other art. Though I don't use Inktense, people have asked me about using them; now I know where I can send them learn! Thank you.
Thank you. I'll have a look at what you're using too...😊
I do use them in a more controlled manner as well as like this, but I'll be doing that as a separate video.
I'm wondering what you use 🤔 I used to use ordinary acrylic paint before I discovered Inktense. I really like the way the colours mix.
@@marionsworld24I have used Caran d'Ache Neocolor II in the same way you have shared here, achieving much the same result as your Inktense. My go to paint is Jacquard Textile Color and their Lumiere paints. I have water thinned regular acrylic as well. I'm looking forward to learning about your more controlled technique.
A very helpful video and this is something I plan to try. I have some of those inktense blocks and inktense pencils, so might have a play with both.
They always make bonny fabric...
Genius at work once again. How easy was that. I can see a scene with dark greens fading away and into 14:23 blues for the sky . Would make an awesome background for an old farmhouse embroidery . Such a joy to watch . Cheers from Australia xx
The painted fabrics definitely suggest things. Especially here where I wasn't aiming for anything in particular other than random colours...👍🖌️
Thank you and have a lovely week
I love love love your smocked top so much I plan on trawling through our spca shop for a large top soon 🤣
I've never smocked anything in my life so wish me luck 🤞🍀
Good luck with the thrill of the hunt 🤞 😅
How wonderful. So many ways to experiment with colours.
I dyed some fabric the other day with purple grapes. (Long finger grapes). The colour is gorgeous. Just love experimenting with colours and fabrics. Must get my water colour pencils out now Marion. This looks amazing!!
I'll look them up... I've never heard of finger grapes 🤔
@@marionsworld24 they're very tasty too.
Hi Marion when you featured the Inktense Ink blocks in your previous video I tried it and absolutely loved the effects that it gave me on fabric. However I actually didnt wet it first just sprayed it and then tried to use the block to colour it. I was happy with the result but I wanted some colour control which I didnt get when I did it. Then your video suddenly appeared and I was over the moon. I happened to have bought mine a few years ago when I was working and I really cherish them too (my set is much smaller though) but I do love them. I will be using your technique and trying it again using an op shop clean old sheet that I already have. Thank You so much for sharing your expertise with these gorgeous art supplies.
I thought I'd make a shorter video to make it easier to find. Some of my earlier videos are about multiple techniques as I was using them... Hence this video..😊
Having the fabric quite wet makes a huge difference. And as you see I often just use my fabric like a mopping up cloth so I get unexpected marks..👍
PS I hope we see what you end up creating with your lovely painted background piece 😍😍😍
Arriving on Sunday!
