And shot in the dark isolated guitar. After the harmonica intro and that first riff hits his guitar sounds so fucking heavy. I first heard that song on the music video and was like 🤩 when he comes down in the bat and the wings open haha so fuckin cool. Well the reason why we have this isolated track is because it is taken from the Guitar Hero Smash Hits game files. Those games use stems and mix them together when playing, but if you miss a note the game drops your guitar track out to simulate you missing the note on a real instrument. Long story short: unless a song has been on Rock Band or Guitar Hero, or any other rhythm game that uses stems for that matter, we won't have any isolated tracks of it.
Not really. It's a lesson in tone. Scooped tone like this sounds AMAZING by itself, or with a sparse arrangement, but the second there is more than just guitar bass and drums, you disappear. Hell, this tone is so scooped it kind of disappears when the drums alone come in.
This was Jake's warm up album, even with this hit and some great songs on BATM, Jake's playing on Ultimate Sin is nothing short of terrifying. An absolute technical wizard.
Same here in ‘84 if I remember correctly. Jacksonville Florida. Had a new band open for them called Motley Crue. One of the best concerts I ever attended.
I saw the tour in Jackson, Ms except Accept was opening. I think it would have been spring of 84. It was my first concert and I had just turned 13. Still can't believe my mom let me go.
Sounds like Jake has a slightly flat B string (on purpose) which makes those chords in the bridge sound so very perfect. EVH used this same trick on Runnin' With the Devil. Works great as long as there are no open chords. Jake is so awesome and ahead of his time. Underrated isn't the word.
A LOT happens in Jakes guitar playing. Especially live. There are things constantly going on over there. And he's not stale either. There are a lot of improvisational licks thrown in at high speeds.

And I love Randy, I have a Randy style jackson guitar, but still, Jake to me just sounds the better axeman and composer. Can't say that to a RR die-hard because at this point they're just way to invested. And that's not me saying that they have to agree, but RR fans act like the PC master race of guitar fans
I always considered Jake as my favorite guitar player. I loved listening to his live playing the most. Even more than Rhodes. If you look around on YT you can find farly many that can play Randy Rhoads stuff fairly equal to the original, but I have only ever seen one YTouber that can almost play and mimic the style of Jake. And that is not because people aren't trying. It because it's really hard to get the intensity, the clean picking/playing, the speed, the chord phrasings, the guitar tricks and the "dirty" laid back "sloppy" blues timing correct to actually sound like him. Much harder than any of the other Ozzy guitarists.
Rhoads was classically trained with a wayyy grimier tone, and is honestly my favorite guitarist. But you seriously can’t beat this. From the percussive chugging to the chord shapes this is exactly what an electric guitar is supposed to do. I don’t listen to much Ozzy outside of BOO and Diary but his song has always been nothing short of a master work. Probably should check out more besides shot in the dark for Lees material
I hate what they did to Jake , they waited until he finished the album , then gave him a crummy contract with no credits for writing and said take it or walk , fired the first band Randy dies they keep all the money
@Vinnie Provolone , back in the 80's there was a huge underground tape trading thing going on. Demo tapes, live bootleg tapes etc. A good friend had the bootleg of what became the Tribute album a couple of years before it was released. He actually learned Randy's solo from the bootleg and played it at battle of the bands. Only a handful of people knew where he came up with the solo. This was probably around 81-83 ? I believe it was taped right from the soundboard as the quality was superb for a bootleg.

This and the track Black Sabbath are the only isolated guitar tracks throughout Ozzy's career where the guitar told the whole story regardless of the lyrics. You don't need words for this guitar track to impart to you what it's about, it's 100% mood, it's that thing that every person who has ever lived has felt when they totally ''lost it'' and went on a rampage. All the emotional elements of diabolical bloodlust are held within the tones that Jake was throwing down. You can't envision a picnic or tennis match or Sunday school when that guitar comes in, only pure homicidal maniacal intent, structured chaos, somebody is about to get ALL their sht fkd UP.

VH had amazing boogies , for sure ...this is straight forward 80’s hair metal greatness...but I don’t find it to “ swing “. Just my thoughts. Wanna hear swing ? He sort of glides from one progression to another and it creates slight variances in his timing. He uses "back beat" releases and anticipated contacts in a way that varies the flow. "Groove". I've been listening to quite a few of these isolated guitar track videos and this is the first one that seems to have "groove" when compared to EVH's work. "Swing"... I haven't heard anyone yet that matches EVH.
Jake E Lee was always one of my guitar heros. Amazing riffs, solos and classical twist on heavy metal music. Ozzy should kiss his feet because he resurrected his career.. Jake was and still is one amazing player..
What phenomenal guitar playing! A true master of rock. Ozzy has no idea how indebted he is to Jake for saving his career. Jake brought fire & originality.
I love Jake. No question. He's definitely the most technical of Ozzy's hitmen, but Randy saved Ozzy's career. After Blizzard of Oz and Diary of A Madman, Ozzy was back on the throne. Jake came along and continued the Ozzy dynasty. He's my favorite Ozzy guitar player. I started playing hair guitar in 1985, so Jake was one of the guys I aspired to play like. Had no clue it would take so long to get a handle on his material.
The more i think about it, the more i'm convinced this is the most iconic metal/rock riff ever composed. Yeah he may not be as recognized as some others, but in terms of creativity, complexity, straight heaviness and melody this smokes almost everything else.
That style of playing "can" sound very messy if played messy...but this is just pure precision playing..!! Legendary and my fave idol as teen when first got into metal as a teen...👌🤘🤘🤘🤘
I’ll never get over the greatness in Jake’s work on those two Ozzy albums. His work is harder to learn and execute than the other Ozzy guitarists. Very complex at many elements.
Ozzy was simply the luckiest guy. First getting Randy, then having lightening strike twice with Jake. But Sharon made sure to end Jake's reign. And thus all the great songs of Ozzy's solo career.
Why did Sharon do that? Sorry if I sound ignorant. I truly just don't know the history between Jake and Sharon/Ozzy. Jake is extremely talented, why kick the guy out? He proved himself he got the skillset.
@@MNcoquicoqui She didn't want to give him publishing. The same issues as why the original band with Bob Daisley and Bob Kerslake wouldn't stay together. He wrote and recorded his guitar parts, Sharon didn't want to give him his share of royalties. Said that if he wanted to protest she would fire him and have another guitarist rerecord all his parts. Don't forget Randy hold told them that he was going to quit the band after the tour. Not the sign of a healthy band mgmt.
@@MNcoquicoqui Various reasons. Keep in mind Jake got screwed out of royalties by those two thugs Ozzy and Sharon, so that could be part of the reason why he was fired. Jake and Ozzy never had a close relationship, they just didn't "click", they got along but it was a cold relationship. Ozzy was closer with Randy, at least early, and Zakk. Jake was getting tired of being forced to write the same metal hit songs over and over. Ozzy always wanted a new "Crazy Train" or a new "Paranoid". He tried to expand Ozzy's music adding jazz, blues and alternative elements, and Ozzy absolutely hated that. At the time of The Ultimate Sin bassist Phil Soussan was whispering in Ozzy's ear that they didn't need Jake to write hit songs, since Phil was the one that brought with him Shot In The Dark. So Soussan was effectively conspiring against Jake. Then it seemed to me that Jake was getting A LOT of attention, he was the star and the focus of the band, and that clearly wasn't well received by Sharon and Ozzy himself.

No kidding! I had to wait for the day every month when Guitar for the practicing Musician hit the shelves for my monthly dose of tabs, half of which I'd never heard before and had no way to listen to without buying the album. Mississippi Queen is a great song but I want going to go out and buy a Mountain album for $20 if I didn't know what it sounded like! All of my heroes were just photos in magazines outside of their recordings!

I was a Randy guy through and through. But honestly i always thought in the back of my head Jake was easily as good as all of the guys around him. I hate effects and yet he made them sound good. His guitar sound in this era was incredible. Rock and Roll Rebel. Sickest sounding clanking crunch chords ever. His stage presence, dude was the epitome of the heavy metal guitar god.
My first concert too (Cow Palace, San Francisco, CA, March 1984). Unfortunately, Motley Crue were no longer on the tour & we had to suffer through Slade instead, who were heavily booed throughout their set. I saw Ozzy there again 2 years later on his Ultimate Sin tour & Metallica opened (MOP tour, with Cliff Burton on bass), so that made up for it.

They both had incredible phrasing and an ear for note selection.
Both had soulful swinging grooves in their riffs...this is more Euro but you can hear it none the less.

Jake E Lee was always one of my guitar heros. Amazing riffs, solos and classical twist on heavy metal music. Ozzy should kiss his feet because he resurrected his career.. Jake was and still is one amazing player..
Jake is/ was tough...he took over at such a hard time and pulled it off.

Jake is not only a great player, but also a great showman.

What phenomenal guitar playing! A true master of rock. Ozzy has no idea how indebted he is to Jake for saving his career. Jake brought fire & originality.
I love Jake. No question. He's definitely the most technical of Ozzy's hitmen, but Randy saved Ozzy's career. After Blizzard of Oz and Diary of A Madman, Ozzy was back on the throne. Jake came along and continued the Ozzy dynasty. He's my favorite Ozzy guitar player. I started playing hair guitar in 1985, so Jake was one of the guys I aspired to play like. Had no clue it would take so long to get a handle on his material.
The more i think about it, the more i'm convinced this is the most iconic metal/rock riff ever composed.
Yeah he may not be as recognized as some others, but in terms of creativity, complexity, straight heaviness and melody this smokes almost everything else.

I’ll never get over the greatness in Jake’s work on those two Ozzy albums. His work is harder to learn and execute than the other Ozzy guitarists. Very complex at many elements.

I saw the Jake E Lee version of Ozzy Osbourne in 1986 in San Francisco. Great show.
Ozzy was simply the luckiest guy. First getting Randy, then having lightening strike twice with Jake. But Sharon made sure to end Jake's reign. And thus all the great songs of Ozzy's solo career.
Why did Sharon do that? Sorry if I sound ignorant. I truly just don't know the history between Jake and Sharon/Ozzy. Jake is extremely talented, why kick the guy out? He proved himself he got the skillset.
@@MNcoquicoqui She didn't want to give him publishing. The same issues as why the original band with Bob Daisley and Bob Kerslake wouldn't stay together. He wrote and recorded his guitar parts, Sharon didn't want to give him his share of royalties. Said that if he wanted to protest she would fire him and have another guitarist rerecord all his parts. Don't forget Randy hold told them that he was going to quit the band after the tour. Not the sign of a healthy band mgmt.
@@MNcoquicoqui Various reasons. Keep in mind Jake got screwed out of royalties by those two thugs Ozzy and Sharon, so that could be part of the reason why he was fired.
Jake and Ozzy never had a close relationship, they just didn't "click", they got along but it was a cold relationship. Ozzy was closer with Randy, at least early, and Zakk.
Jake was getting tired of being forced to write the same metal hit songs over and over. Ozzy always wanted a new "Crazy Train" or a new "Paranoid". He tried to expand Ozzy's music adding jazz, blues and alternative elements, and Ozzy absolutely hated that.
At the time of The Ultimate Sin bassist Phil Soussan was whispering in Ozzy's ear that they didn't need Jake to write hit songs, since Phil was the one that brought with him Shot In The Dark. So Soussan was effectively conspiring against Jake.
Then it seemed to me that Jake was getting A LOT of attention, he was the star and the focus of the band, and that clearly wasn't well received by Sharon and Ozzy himself.

I was a Randy guy through and through. But honestly i always thought in the back of my head Jake was easily as good as all of the guys around him. I hate effects and yet he made them sound good. His guitar sound in this era was incredible. Rock and Roll Rebel. Sickest sounding clanking crunch chords ever. His stage presence, dude was the epitome of the heavy metal guitar god.
Jake was and always will be.... a bad bad bad man..!! That first solo... my god..😮. So underrated to this day.

My first concert too (Cow Palace, San Francisco, CA, March 1984). Unfortunately, Motley Crue were no longer on the tour & we had to suffer through Slade instead, who were heavily booed throughout their set. I saw Ozzy there again 2 years later on his Ultimate Sin tour & Metallica opened (MOP tour, with Cliff Burton on bass), so that made up for it.
