  • ‪@floridamandrone‬ This video features a tour of the bridge onboard the Holland America cruise ship Nieuw Amsterdam. Highlights include the engine monitoring and management systems, Azipod controls, steering and autopilot, electronic chart, bridge wings, bow thruster controls, and the fire suppression and watertight door control panels. I would like to thank Staff Captain Jeroen and Third Officer Mihai for making this video possible.

This is an awesome video. Thank you for sharing. Nieuw amsterdam was my first cruise and I was sad they didn’t offer the behind the scenes tour.

You're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I think they used to offer a tour of the bridge and engine control room several years back, it's too bad they don't anymore.

Sailing on her to Alaska in 2024. Wish HAL would open tours like this back up. Thanks for sharing

I regret not buying those tours when they were available, if I recall they offered the engineering control room tour as well. They do still offer a presentation by the captain in the theater where he talks about the navigation and mechanical systems. Enjoy your cruse and thank you for checking out my channel 🙂

The good thing about old ships is that they have already proved their reliablebility. I bet you this ship has been in many rough situations and has made it. Newer ships also comes with the lack of experience in real life conditions. I wonder if the engine stop working because malfunction, if they have enough drinking water and food in storage for all the thousands of people they have on board. If the lights goes out, their phone system may not work. Scary situation.

This is an excellent point. I prefer the older ships which are smaller and have far fewer people onboard than the newer ships. Imagine trying to evacuate 10,000 people from one of those floating monstrosities in an emergency.

Love this video, gimbaled and detailed footage of a bridge is hard to find. Are you apart of the navigation team on the ship or just touring?

Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed the film 😀 I was a passenger on the ship and the Staff Captain was kind enough to film and narrate the video.

What an amazing footage! Thank you so much for sharing it, I always feel passionate about cruise ships! May I ask you Sir, at 0:24 there’s like a whistle sound on the bridge. What does it indicate? I have heard the identical but a much longer, like an alarm, whistling sound in a video taken in Costa Concordia’s bridge when the disaster occurred.

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 🙂 I was not present on the bridge, but I think the whistle happens whenever the door is opened or the key card is scanned.

Do they allow smoking on these ships?

They allowed outdoor smoking in a designated section on one of the upper decks. I can't recall if there was smoking in the casino, check out their website
