Johnny Tillotson was one of the teenage heartthrob singers from the late 50's-60's. He had some great hits such as "Dreamy Eyes", "Poetry In Motion", "It Keeps Right On a-Hurtin'", "Without You", "Tears On My Pillow", "Send Me The Pillow You Dream On", "Talk Back Trembling Lips" & "Heartaches By The Number" etc.

In the early 60s rock had a bit of a blip. Young singers like this guy, Paul Anka, Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, Pat Boone, etc. were making parents feel safe until 4 mop tops from Liverpool totally upset the applecart.
Starting in the mid fifties and into the early 60s a lot of the country sound was like this Tillotson song. Artists like Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, etc.

That is true. Also, in the late 50s (and maybe even up to '62, when this was released) Top Pops was still more or less an adult contemporary chart, and there was a separate chart for Tops With Teens.

There were sophisticated country singers getting away from the stereotypical “country bumpkin “ look and sound of fiddles and banjos. Watch Ken Burns documentary “Country Music” to explain it

I have the privilege of being born into a huge family. 19 years separate the oldest from the youngest. As a result I spent my childhood and teen years listening to everything from The Carter Family to the rock bands of the 70s and 80s to disco to bluegrass. One LP on top of another we would sing ( we are tone deaf ) and listen for hours.
If you like this song, listen to Talk Back Trembling Lips by Johnny Tillotson.
Also All for The Love of a Girl and Whispering Pines by Johnny Horton.
    Seminole Wind by John Anderson
Shut Up and Kiss Me by Mary Chapin Carpenter
Grandpa, Momma He's Crazy, & Love Can Build a Bridge by The Judds

I had the same experience. On top of it all my parents were the World War II generation so I heard a lot of 40s swing as well. Oh and on the radio station let's not forget "And Now The Rest Of The Story" Mr. Paul Harvey.

In the late 50's and early 60's, country music was on a decline in sales. To attract more listeners, producers such as Owen Bradley and Chet Atkins devised what became known as "The Nashville Sound". It replaced fiddles and pedal steel guitars and the honky tonk sound traditional in country music up to that time with strings, smooth backing vocals and the lead singer's vocals more up front. Vocalists such as Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves helped popularize this sound. This is an example of "The Nashville Sound".

It was also known as the "countrypolitan" style -- classy country songs with strings and high-end arrangements. Other countrypolitan artists included Eddy Arnold and Ray Price, and later on, Charlie Rich. They performed in suave suits, but with bolo ties instead of regular ones, and shiny boots instead of brodies. And yes, popularized in Nashville.

That is interesting. Although I would rather hear the old country or the new country. This is the type of music I hated as a child. This is what old people in the bar would play. Us kids would yell "turn it off your killing us." That back ground music in my opinion is sappy. It's like that goody goody kid we all knew. You hated him or her because you knew they weren't really that goody goody. It was all a show until no one could see. Blah I say "Blah"

Bobby was a favorite of mine, a great example of the "rockabilly" artists in the late 1950s and early '60s who put a rock and roll thang on country twang and crossed over. Others include the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Johnny Burnette, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis, and yes, Elvis.

You asked for crooners. Well there's one artist that you've already listened to that you probably didn't know was a crooner. He's had a remarkable career. He started out as a rocker (Street Fighting Man, Hot Legs). Dabbled in disco (Do Ya Think I'm Sexy, Passion). Went pop (Some Guys Have All The Luck, Love Touch). Did a little R&B (The Motown Song, This Old Heart Of Mine). And finally Rod Stewart ended his career as a crooner (It Had To Be You, These Foolish Things).

This was the sound of Nashville and the Grand Ol’ Opry. At least in the part of the USA I grew up in this was the sound you heard on most radio stations in the early 60’s. They did heartbreak, romance, comedy, story songs and ballads. Before pop and soft rock the country stations did it all which is why a lot of people claim rock was originally R&B meets country. I hope you truly enjoyed your day off, there never seems to enough time for family.

Another crossover hit from around that time would be El Paso from Marty Robbins. It was number 1 on the pop chart for the first two weeks of 1960, as well as the country/western chart for the first five weeks of 1960. It is a story song with a Spanish guitar accompaniment. Be sure to listen to the "long version" (only about 20 seconds longer). You will want a studio audio version so y'all can better appreciate the voice and the guitar.

I listened to Johnny Tillotson when I was a teenager, at which time I just thought of him as a singer on "top-40" radio (WLS in Chicago, when it was music). Bought his "Poetry in Motion" on 45 rpm. I never thought of him as a crooner (that was Bing Crosby, from my parents' world), but I did notice a touch of country here and there. It's interesting how unimportant genres were to me in those days.

I always thought of his work as POP ( lack of cowboy garb, instrumentation not heavy in guitars , no southern accent) but as you point out, there is enough country style in it to become very popular for those fans.

I think Crooner is more of a singing style .. not really a genre. This song's genre is labeled as either pop or country. I do know country music has drastically changed over the years. My Daddy picked, sang & had a "garage band" that I was blessed to have watched them sing & play most of my life. He's been saying for years that country isn't country music any more. He was born in '34 so he's witnessed much change in that genre. Thank y'all & enjoy the evening. ✌🏼🤘🏼❣️

My Mom was born in the later 1920's and this was *her* kind of music. Listening to this song, I can hear an orchestra/violins in the background too. Her all time favorite was Sinatra.

There's an old band from Australia that will generally get a satisfying reaction from anyone who listens to them the first time.
They are called Midnight Oil. I would start with a song like " BEDS ARE BURNING" then move on to "POWER AND THE PASSION", "US FORCES", "SHORT MEMORY"
You will like the message- you may like what makes them unique- you will definitely have some good subject matter for your videos.

When we put a violin in a country song we just call it a fiddle 😁
As mentioned already, back in the early 1960's and before, what was considered the "pop chart" hits was adult contemporary music. While "Rock & Roll" was just getting a toe hold into radio playing time many "hits" were because adults (parents) were making requests. The "kids" were using juke boxes to find their new favorites songs.

Another song I've mentioned before by a Texan Lady Jeannie C. Riley "Harper Valley PTA" also topped both charts. It's a terrific story telling song and one of those songs that once you've heard it you'll Love it. As far as I'm concerned it's the ultimate song about People In Glass Houses. Ray Stevens "Mississippi Squirrel Revival" takes second place to it.

This song was teenage heartthrob music of the time.I think what give it a "country" vibe is the 3/4 time that is reminiscent of early country.

The piano on that cut was the legendary Floyd Cramer. His distinctive “Slip Note” style he developed appeared on countless legendary Country tracks….

    • @michlkwitz
      @michlkwitz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I thought I recognized his style. Was this track produced by Chet Atkins? Because I feel like Owen Bradley would have had Floyd's piano much more prominent in the mix.

A crooner you haven’t checked out is Ed Ames. Handsome, Native American actor and singer around the same era as Nat King Cole and Bing but not as famous. Try his most famous song, My Cup Runneth Over.
Ed is still alive and performing in his 90s!

He briefly crossed over to a more pop sound but seemed more comfortable in country-western. Much like a Bobby Vee sound,"The Night Has A Thousand Eyes". My first record album was his delve into pop, alongside my first 45rpm "Telestar". Memories around early '60s. Similar acoustics in Marty Robbins "El Paso".

In response to your comments about rock 'n roll eras, here's how I break down . . . Early Rock ('55 thru '62) - British Invasion ("63 thru '66) - Psychedelic ("'67 thru '69) - California canyon country/folk/rock ('70 thru '74) - Hair/Glam/Disco/Power pop/Arena rock ('75-'88} - Grunge ('89-"94) - Alt Rock ('95 thru 2000), with rock being pretty much on life-support ever since. Of course, Soul, R&B and Country run through the whole time period, thank God!
